The Isle of Thanet /ˈθænɪt/ lies at the most easterly point of Kent, England. While in the past it was separated from the mainland by the 600-metre (2,000 ft) Wantsum Channel, it is no longer an island.
Archaeological remains testify to the fact that ancient peoples lived here. Today, it is a tourist destination, but it also has a busy agricultural base.
Standard reference works for English place-names, such as Eilert Ekwall's Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Place-Names, state that the name "Thanet" is Celtic in origin, and may mean "bright island" or "fire island", perhaps from the presence of a beacon or lighthouse. The Historia Brittonum, written in Wales in the 9th century, states that "Tanet" was the name used for the island by the legendary Anglo-Saxons Hengist and Horsa, while its name in contemporary Welsh was "Ruoi(c)hin"; this name may be translated as "gift" (compare Modern Welsh rhwych). The 7th-century Archbishop Isidore of Seville recorded an apocryphal folk-etymology in which the island's name is fancifully connected with the Greek word for death (Thanatos/Θάνατος), stating that Thanet, "an island of the ocean separated from Britain by a narrow channel ... [was] called Tanatos from the death of serpents; for while it has none of its own, soil taken from it to any place whatsoever kills snakes there."
Thanet /ˈθænɪt/ is a local government district of Kent, England, which was formed under the Local Government Act 1972, and came into being on 1 April 1974. The Isle of Thanet makes up the major part of the District.
The district, which is governed by Thanet District Council, is located on the north eastern tip of Kent, and is predominantly coastal, with north, east and southeast facing coastlines. It is bordered by the City of Canterbury district to the west, and the Dover district to the south. The main towns in the district are Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs.
The Isle of Thanet is the major part of the Thanet District. Formed over 7000 years ago and separated from the mainland by the Wantsum Channel, it has always borne the brunt of invasions from the Continent. An Isle of Thanet Rural District had existed from the Local Government Act 1894 until it was abolished in 1935 to form part of Eastry Rural District. The current District was formed in 1974, by the addition of the area over which was once the Wantsum Channel, including the settlement of Sarre.

The Isle is a 2000 South Korean film written and directed by Kim Ki-duk. The film was the fifth film made by Kim, and the first to receive wider international acclaim for his recognizable style. It also became notorious for being difficult to watch, with stories of viewers vomiting or passing out during the more gruesome scenes when the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
The Isle stars Seo Jeong and Kim Yu-seok as an unlikely couple who develop a love for each other despite the unusual circumstances.
Seo Jeong plays the mute Hee-jin, who operates a fishing resort, where she rents out small floating cottages and ferries her customers back and forth between land and the floats, controlling the only means of transport around. She also dispassionately takes care of her customers' needs by selling supplies, providing prostitutes from a local tabang or occasionally acting as one herself. However, when a man running from the law, Hyun-shik (Kim Yu-seok), comes to the resort, a bond starts to form between them.
The City of London Tavern or London Tavern was a notable meeting place in London during the 18th and 19th centuries. A place of business where people gathered to drink alcoholic beverages and be served food, the tavern was situated in Bishopsgate in the City of London (the site today of Nos 1-3 Bishopsgate). The original tavern was destroyed in a fire on 7 November 1765 and the new building was designed by William Jupp the elder (with support from William Newton, 1765–1768) and opened in September 1768. In 1828, the proprietor was Charles Bleaden. The building was demolished in 1876. The tavern boasted a large and well-decorated dining room with Corinthian columns. It hosted numerous public and private meetings held to rally support to various political, charitable and other causes.
In 1841, Charles Dickens presided at a meeting for the benefit of the Sanatorium for Sick Authors and Artists, and in 1851 at the annual dinner for the General Theatrical Fund. While he was attending a dinner at the London Tavern on 14 April 1851, Dickens learned of the death of his daughter Dora Annie Dickens.

The pub scene in Margate has been reinvigorated in recent years and nothing speaks of the drastic change than the renovations of the London Tavern. The pub was taken over by Carl & Nancy Hilliard in late 2015. They redesigned what the pub was about and they created a welcoming environment for the locals as well as the new wave of tourists that Margate is experiencing. Just over a year after opening, The London Tavern was awarded the Pub of the Year for Thanet by CAMRA. ---------- Check out my website: http://admt.me/1RHbVzA ---------- ---------- GEAR: Camera 1 (more mobile): http://admt.me/2gDDXPo Camera 2 (less mobile): http://admt.me/2grVVRv Monitor: http://admt.me/2gs9CzS Samsung Gear 360: http://admt.me/2dqh7FL Bendy Tripod 1 (for big cameras): http://admt.me/2eQTV8Q Bendy Tri...

In 43 AD Emperor Claudius planned a major and successful invasion of Britain. In this feature we look at the lighthouses, forts and cities that developed to sustain Roman rule for the next 350 years. Our travels take us from Dover Castle and a Roman painted town-house, to the Saxon Shore Forts of Portus Lemanis, Richborough and Reculver on the Wantsum Channel that separated the Isle of Thanet from the mainland of Kent. This is part 3 of 4 in which we cross the English Channel to explore the Roman connection between Nord-Pas-de-Calais in France and Kent, in England. Taking little over an hour cruising along, the Marlin used a gallon of petrol! A gorgeous sunset was ruined by seeing the Ghastly Turner Centre in Margate but... well, you can't have everything can you! Turner allegedly stated that 'The finest sunsets in Europe are to be found over the Isle of Thanet' but he'd probably have hoped the sun never rose again if he saw the 'Art Gallery' they named after him! Testing the new coaches on the line with the locos...needs a bit of grease on the axles tho!!!!!!
For most of the winter of 2012/13 I lived on the Isle of Thanet, in Margate to be exact. Due to the cold, I wasn't out on the street that much, but I worked when I was able and when I was in the right mental space. Thanet is a beautiful area, but down on its luck as "they" say. Decaying infrastructure, increasingly scarce social and other services and a general lack of energy, will or attention on the part of government, all have led to the area being very depressed. So, a lovely part of the world, full of people who deserve better is being allowed to decay. This slideshow of images made while I was there is dedicated to all the people of Thanet, including my son who lives there too. Peace

Places to see in ( Ramsgate - UK ) Ramsgate is a seaside town in the district of Thanet in east Kent, England. Ramsgate was one of the great English seaside towns of the 19th century. Ramsgate’s main attraction is its coastline, and its main industries are tourism and fishing. The town has one of the largest marinas on the English south coast, and the Port of Ramsgate has provided cross-channel ferries for many years. Ramsgate is located 78 miles from central London in an east south-easterly direction at one of the most easterly points of the United Kingdom (the furthest point east is Lowestoft in Suffolk). The town is an amalgamation of two settlements: a fishing community on the coast in the shallow valley between two chalk cliffs, and an inland farming community that is now the Paris...

Places to see in ( Broadstairs - UK ) Broadstairs is a coastal town on the Isle of Thanet in the Thanet district of east Kent, England, about 80 miles east of London. Broadstairs is part of the civil parish of Broadstairs and St Peter's, which includes St Peter's. Situated between Margate and Ramsgate, Broadstairs is one of Thanet's seaside resorts, known as the "Jewel in Thanet's crown". The town's crest motto is Stella Maris ("Star of the Sea"). The name derives from a former flight of steps in the chalk cliff, which led from the sands up to the 11th-century shrine of St Mary on the cliff's summit. Broadstairs town spreads from Haine Road in the west to Kingsgate (named after the landing of King Charles II in 1683) a hamlet in St Peter parish in the north and to Dumpton in the south (...

Hilderstone College is located in the lovely seaside town of Broadstairs in Kent, on the south-east coast of England. There are many restaurants, pubs and coffee bars where you can meet friends. Close by there are also shopping centres, cinemas, theatres, music venues, bowling alleys, sports centres and markets. The old part of Broadstairs still retains the beauty of a picturesque fishing village. During the 19th century Broadstairs became popular with members of the royal family and famous artists and writers. Charles Dickens wrote much of his work here and called it his "beloved Broadstairs". The town remains popular with visitors today. Some of the beaches and spots I saw on a recent short trip to Margate for my first time, and apart from getting stuck out in the sticks - due to my misunderstanding of a bus route I might add!, I was pleasantly surprised with how much stuff there is to do in these seaside towns!
