It lies on the River Stour. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canterbury Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England and forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Its formal title is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury. Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt 1070-77. The east end was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the twelfth century, and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174 , with significant eastward extensions to accommodate the flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral in 1170. The Norman nave and transepts survived until the late fourteenth century, when they were demolished to make way for the present structures. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canterbury_Cathedral The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century. The tales (mostly written in verse although some are in prose) are presented as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together on a journey from Southwark to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. The prize for this contest is a free meal at the Tabard Inn at Southwark on their return. After a long list of works written earlier in his career, including Troilus and Criseyde, House of Fame, and Parliament of Fowls, the Canterbury Tales was Chaucer's magnum opus. He uses the tales and the descriptions of its characters to paint an ironic and critical portrait of English society at the time, and particularly of the Church. Structurally, the collection resembles The Decameron, which Chaucer may have read during his first diplomatic mission to Italy in 1372. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canterbury_tales The Mayflower was the ship that in 1620 transported 102 English Pilgrims, including a core group of Separatists, to New England. Their story is one of travail and survival in a harsh New World environment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayflower Robert Cushman (1578 -- 1625) Robert Cutchman or Cushman was baptized at Rolvenden, County Kent, England, February 9, 1577/8. He served as the Chief Agent for the Separatist Leiden contingent and that of Plymouth Colony from 1617 to his death in the spring of 1625.[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Cushman VISIT http://www.canterburytales.org.uk/home VISIT http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Museum_and_Art_Gallery Video produced and copyright to Robert Nichol 2013 Canterbury Cathedral,Canterbury Tales,Canterbury, visit canterbury,Kent,Robert Cushman,Pilgrims (Plymouth Colony),Chaucer,The Mayflower,Mayflower,Pilgrims,Pilgrim Fathers, visit england,

A great campsite to explore Canterbury, with a bus stop outside the site entrance. City, coast and countryside – you can take your pick if you’re basing yourself at our Canterbury Club campsite. Although a popular stopover for those travelling to or from France, this campsite offers the ideal base for exploring Kent’s coast and country. The campsite lies a couple of miles south of the city – within walking distance (or hire a bike on site). The not so energetic can catch a bus from outside the campsite. The well laid out campsite offers a mix of level grass and hardstand pitches. There are newly refurbished toilet and shower facilities, a washing up area, children’s play area and good dog walking. Off site Canterbury is a city packed with history, heritage and culture. It has a stunning cathedral and the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church and castle. It also has an eclectic mix of specialist shops, independent retailers, bars and restaurants. Head to the coast for Whitstable with its trendy harbour and July Oyster Festival. The more traditional Herne-Bay has two miles of seafront adorned with colourful beach huts and a pier. The quaint Victorian town of Broadstairs with its Punch and Judy shows and donkey rides is a contrast to the more cosmopolitan habour side Ramsgate noted for its pavement cafes and waterside bars.

noodls 2012-10-18The City of Canterbury is a local government district with city status in Kent, England. The main settlement in the district is Canterbury, the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The district was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the existing city of Canterbury with the Whitstable and Herne Bay Urban Districts, and Bridge-Blean Rural District. The latter district entirely surrounded the city; the urban districts occupied the coastal area to the north.
Within the district are the towns of Herne Bay and Whitstable, which with the parishes and the cathedral city itself, make up the 'City of Canterbury' district. There are 26 parishes within the district, as follows:
Swalecliffe is an unparished area within the district.
The area is in the main rural, although the entire coastal strip is taken up by the almost unbroken sprawl of seaside towns from Seasalter, west of Whitstable, to Herne Bay, Kent. Between them and the city there is high land, well wooded, south of which the Great Stour flows from its source beyond Ashford. The city of Canterbury stands upon this river.

Canterbury (i/ˈkæntərbᵊri/ or /ˈkæntərbɛri/) is a historic English cathedral city, which lies at the heart of the City of Canterbury, a district of Kent in South East England. It lies on the River Stour.
Originally a Brythonic settlement, it was renamed Durovernum Cantiacorum by the Roman conquerors in the 1st century AD. After it became the chief Jutish settlement, it gained its English name Canterbury, itself derived from the Old English Cantwareburh ("Kent people's stronghold"). After the Kingdom of Kent's conversion to Christianity in 597, St Augustine founded an episcopal see in the city and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury, a position that now heads the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion (though the modern-day Province of Canterbury covers the entire south of England). Thomas Becket's murder at Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 led to the cathedral becoming a place of pilgrimage for Christians worldwide. This pilgrimage provided the theme for Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th-century literary classic The Canterbury Tales. The literary heritage continued with the birth of the playwright Christopher Marlowe in the city in the 16th century.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the senior bishop and principal leader of the Church of England, the symbolic head of the worldwide Anglican Communion, and the diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Canterbury. In his role as head of the Anglican Communion, the archbishop leads the third largest group of Christians in the world[citation needed].
The current archbishop is the Most Reverend Rowan Williams. He is the 104th in a line which goes back more than 1400 years to St Augustine of Canterbury, the "Apostle to the English", in the year 597. From the time of St Augustine until the 16th century, the Archbishops of Canterbury were in full communion with the See of Rome and thus received the pallium. During the English Reformation the Church of England broke away from the authority of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church, at first temporarily under Henry VIII and Edward VI and later permanently during the reign of Elizabeth I.
In the Middle Ages there was considerable variation in the methods of nomination of the Archbishop of Canterbury and other bishops. At various times the choice was made by the canons of Canterbury Cathedral, the King of England, or the Pope. Since the English Reformation, the Church of England has been more explicitly a state church and the choice is legally that of the British crown; today it is made in the name of the Sovereign by the Prime Minister, from a shortlist of two selected by an ad hoc committee called the Crown Nominations Commission.
