CSR 97.4FM is a community radio station based in Canterbury, England. It is funded by the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, as well as their associated Student Unions. The radio station broadcasts from studios at both universities 24 hours a day,^[1] with live broadcasting from 7am - 12pm. Despite being primarily aimed at students it is not purely a student radio station.^[2]

History[link]

Student Radio has existed in Canterbury since 1966,^[3] initially on an unlicensed basis. In 1967, UKC Radio started broadcasting legally on an AM licence which covered the University of Kent campus only. Canterbury Christ Church University also had a student radio station, C4, broadcasting on AM on a similar strictly contained basis.

When Restricted Service Licences (RSLs) became available both stations periodically took advantage of the scheme to gain city-wide coverage on FM, albeit only for short periods. Each station allowed the other some airtime during their RSLs.

Canterbury Christ Church University's first RSL broadcast occurred in 2002, under the then Station Manager, Jim Cohen. Test broadcasts established that most of the city could pick up the radio station as well as certain parts of the surrounding countryside. The RSL broadcast lasted 2 weeks and was generally considered to be a great success.

The two student unions, which operated these radio stations, decided to make a single combined bid for the Canterbury community radio licence and were successful.^[4] In order to apply for the license Canterbury Youth Student Media (CYSM) Ltd. was set up which has directors compromising of members of both universities and their unions and also the executive committee members. The station launched on January 15, 2007^[1]

On the 22nd July 2011 it was announced that the station was successful in the license extension application and will continue to broadcast for at least another 5 years until 2017.

Management[link]

Management of the station is on three levels. The project is overseen by a board of directors whose members include representatives from CSR FM's funding bodies. A democratically elected committee are responsible for the day-to-day running of the station, including four executive positions (Station, Programming, Marketing, Technical) who represent the point of contact for their corresponding departments. The remaining committee positions are each associated to one of the departments. The committee consists mostly of student from the two universities. The committee is assisted by two full time members of staff, both under contract to the University of Kent Students' Union.

Since CSR launched in 2007, both the station and it’s presenters, have been honoured with four prestigious Student Radio Awards.

CSR also hosts its own awards evenings. One annual awards evening which coincides with the committee elections. These are internally voted awards for different categories and can be won by any of the members of the station. In 2011 CSR launched the John Pigeon Awards. During his career as BBC Head of Entertainment, John Pidgeon worked with top names in the media industry and helped launch careers along the way. Members are asked to write and produce a 20 minute script which is then judged by John Pigeon. A cash prize is given away at an awards ceremony which has been previously attended by Collin Anderson and John Holmes^[7]

Dan Gibson (Montreal, January 19, 1922 – March 18, 2006) was a Canadian photographer, cinematographer and sound recordist.

During the late 1940s, Dan Gibson took photographs and made nature films, including Audubon Wildlife Theatre. Dan produced many films and television series through which he learned how to record wildlife sound. He pioneered techniques of recording, and also helped design equipment to optimize results, including the “Dan Gibson Parabolic Microphone”. Some of his early recordings of the 1950s and 1960s were released on LP records, and started his Solitudes series, which was introduced in 1981.

Dan is well regarded for his contributions to the Friends of Algonquin Park, and his dedication to the Algonquin Park Residents Association. Having a lease of land in Algonquin Provincial Park gave Dan and his family (Wife: Helen, Children: Mary-Jane or "Kirkie," Holly, Dan, and Gordon) a unique opportunity to connect with nature, and it certainly fueled his passion for the study, preservation and interaction with wildlife.

In 1994, Dan was awarded The Order of Canada for his environmental works. In 1997, Dan was awarded the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award at the Juno Awards ceremony in Hamilton, Ontario.

In 2004, he released his first DVD, Natural Beauty, which was originally shot in High Definition.

James Christian Charters (born 18 January 1988, Camden, London), better known as Ironik, is a British musician, DJ and rapper. His genre of music varies from R&B, grime and hip hop.

DJ Ironik has had three UK top 10 hits; Stay With Me charted at #5, Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer) charted at #3 and also I Got Soul A charity single which reached #10 in the UK charts and has also had several top 5 hits in other European countries.

Early life[link]

"DJ Ironik" (born James Charters) was born in North London, England. He decided on a career in music at an early age when doing GCSE in music He started his career as a DJ working in clubs, initially in his home country but his talent was quickly spotted and he moved around Europe then every record he released charted in the Top 40 UK Charts throughout 2008-2010.^[1]

His first single, "So Nice", was released in summer of 2007. It achieved popularity on the British music channels, including remaining in the top 3 of the viewer request chart on Channel U for 20 weeks, however it had limited success elsewhere.

At the age of 20, he signed with Asylum Records which is a subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

The first hit was the single "Stay with Me (Everybody's Free)", which went into the UK charts at number 11 on downloads alone, then number five on its physical release. It equally had success on Channel U, remaining in the request chart top 10 for 26 weeks. The remix to "Stay with Me" features Chipmunk and Wiley.

His second single, "I Wanna Be Your Man" was released in September 2008 and reached number 35 in the UK.

His début album No Point in Wasting Tears was released on Warner UK on September 29, 2008 and charted at 21 in the UK Chart. Ironik has since left Warner UK and is now signed to independent label BPM Entertainment.

The third single taken from his début album is "Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer)" which features grime rap artist Chipmunk and Sir Elton John. The song was released in the UK on 26 April 2009 and it charted at number 3 in the UK chart This was followed by the re-release of his album on 11 May 2009.

He was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2008 MOBO Awards and Best Newcomer and Best Music Video ("Stay with Me") at the 2008 Urban Music Awards. He was also nominated for Best Male Music in Film at the Screen Nation Film & TV Awards in November 2008, and voted by the public viewers of MTV UK the third favourite artist of the year 2008, coming after Katy Perry and Duffy.

Throughout October and November 2008, Ironik supported German Euro dance group Cascada on their second UK tour - The Perfect Day Tour 2008.

In 2009 he was nominated for 'Best UK Act' at the 2009 Mobo Awards.^[2]

In late 2009 he collaborated with UK Rapper A.Y.O. and ex-X Factor contestant Joelle Moses for the song Far Away. It was released on 26 April 2010 on iTunes.

The first single is called Falling in Love and featuring 90210 Star Jessica Lowndes and was released in UK on 24 October 2010 and charted at 40 in the UK charts.

The second single is called "Killed Me" and features Mclean was released on 13 March 2011 but did not chart in the UK

On Monday 9 May 2011 Ironik performed for The Queen and other members of the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace with dance group Flawless & singer Sarah Jane Skeete.

Personal life[link]

While returning to his home in North London from a gig in Essex, Ironik became the victim of a stabbing attack at around 3 a.m. on 6 November 2010, when two men attacked him for his jewellery, knifing him in the right buttock.^[3][4] Ironik said of the stabbing: "It was something I've never experienced in my life before. Something that I've spoke about in a lot of my records - some of my records - actually. I find it very low that someone has to go take what you have and what you work for. I've kind of got over it and trying to get back on to living my life and being normal. The past is behind, and I'm trying to get on with my life. I'm back to normal, back to work 100% and I'm just happy that everyone was really supportive. I'll always be involved in charity work and especially the anti-gun and knife crime thing. It's a very important thing... I'll always be a part of supporting it, even before the incident, but obviously now more so." The DJ has been reported to have recovered now.^[5]
