Alluvium (from the Latin, alluvius, from alluere, "to wash against") is loose, unconsolidated (not cemented together into a solid rock) soil or sediments, which has been eroded, reshaped by water in some form, and redeposited in a non-marine setting. Alluvium is typically made up of a variety of materials, including fine particles of silt and clay and larger particles of sand and gravel. When this loose alluvial material is deposited or cemented into a lithological unit, or lithified, it is called an alluvial deposit. This video is targeted to blind users. Water and landscape can sometimes work together to form amazing geological features such as mountains, valleys and canyons. A curious feature especially visible in arid regions is the alluvial fan. Derived from the word “alluvium” meaning gravel, dirt and silt deposited by a stream, an alluvial fan is a build-up of such natural debris emanating from the narrow mouth of a deep canyon where flash floods bring periodic bursts of sediment-filled water coursing out and across the landscape. When water floods from such a canyon onto the plain it begins to deposit heavier load (solid objects carried along by the force of moving water) near the mouth as energy is lost by the spreading front of water. As the water continues to cover a wider area of the fan it drops successively smaller boulders, rocks and gravel until just fine sand or silt remain to be deposited at the floods final reach. This effect causes the alluvial fan to gradually, and typically evenly, grow as flood waters “braid” across the fan, with each successive flash flood bringing another layer of debris to spread across the surface. Though alluvial fans are typically most dramatically evident in deserts (due to the lack of ground cover) these geological features are nevertheless also found in areas of ample rainfall. While flash floods are a great danger in the narrow sections of canyons which produce alluvial fans ,the fans themselves may sometimes be an even greater threat as water spilling upon them may spread evenly offering no refuge to animals attempting to cross. Specialist plants sometimes make their home at the front of desert alluvial fans where the plants send deep tap-roots to collect ground water seeping from the front of the fan deep below the surface. These plants provide an oasis-like habitat of food and shade for animals and other plants. ---- My name is Kurt Bell and I am delighted that you have taken some time to share a little of the experience of life with me. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone. noodls 2014-11-18Alluvium (from the Latin, alluvius, from alluere, "to wash against") is loose, unconsolidated (not cemented together into a solid rock) soil or sediments, which has been eroded, reshaped by water in some form, and redeposited in a non-marine setting. Alluvium is typically made up of a variety of materials, including fine particles of silt and clay and larger particles of sand and gravel. When this loose alluvial material is deposited or cemented into a lithological unit, or lithified, it would be called an alluvial deposit.
The term "alluvium" is not typically used in situations where the formation of the sediment can clearly be attributed to another geologic process that is well described. This includes (but is not limited to): lake sediments (lacustrine), river sediments (fluvial), or glacially-derived sediments (glacial till). Sediments that are formed and/or deposited in a perennial stream or river are typically 'not' referred to as alluvial.
Most, if not all, alluvium is very young (Quaternary in age), and is often referred to as "cover" because these sediments obscure the underlying bedrock. Most sedimentary material that fills a basin ("basin fill") that is not lithified is typically lumped together in the term alluvial.
I'm losing your train of thought
Watching my mind get caught
Up and eternal breeze
Talking amongst the trees
Cannot find the words to use the thoughts that I would
write
Over-analyzing how the leaves eclipse the light
Constantly find meaning and naïvety inside
Lost within my wonder as the day turns into night
All of the mysteries
Complex discoveries
Hiding in frequencies
Keeping the mind at ease
Staring at the sky while you are blurring out the line
If the colors and the shapes were clearly more defined
Thinking on a concept seems like adding off the course
How does the motion make me last
I shuffle forward and not back
I can be questioning my thoughts
But not looking for what I lack
What is it that has my mind so hypnotized
When shapes are for looking at
And their colors create my mood
I'm a vessel between two places I've never been
To seek a further more formal design
Creation is a pathogen
What's more than subtle in these minds
I know you're looking forward to them
What is it that has my mind so hypnotized
Evolving on your thoughts that you've half realized
Life is real only then when I am... I am surprised
Shapes are for looking at
And their colors create my mood
