Despite a series of interventions by Nigeria's Central Bank, the country's currency, the naira, continues to weaken against the dollar. There are indications the apex bank may consider devaluing the naira further. The lender of last resort has burned through some 1.1 billion dollars over the past nine days to prop up the currency that has fallen to lows of 200 to the U.S. dollar. Deji Badmus reports

The Nigerian Naira has fallen to a record low against the US Dollar as it opened at 184.60 to the Dollar on Monday, December 1 but quickly fell to 187.55. The Naira initially showed a 0.3 percent decline from the previous amount but it dipped even further as the demand for the Dollar increased. The new findings were collated by the Thomson Reuters Corporation, a mass media and information firm located in the US. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had earlier announced a devaluation of the Naira from N155 to N168 to the US dollar citing falling oil prices as one of the reasons for the move.

LAGOS, Jan 26 Nigeria's naira traded near a record intraday low on Monday as demand for the greenback met with thin liquidity, dealers said. The currency initially lifted from Friday's close, then slipped into weaker territory. A dealer traded the naira at a one-off rate of 194. 10 to the dollar before the unit settled at 191. 35 naira at 1118 GMT, close to a record intraday low of 191. 97 it hit last week. The naira closed on Friday at a record low of 190. 60. The naira has been hitting record lows as dollar liquidity on the interbank forex market thins out amidst a collapse in the price of oil, Nigeria's main export. Dealers said Total offered to sell $80 million to some lenders on Monday while Shell sold an undisclosed amount of dollars, to buy naira for their local operations. However, the market was awaiting the results from the sales.

Rampant inflation has occurred in Nigeria over the existence of naira. The Central Bank of Nigeria claimed that they attempted to control the annual inflation rate below 10%. In 2011, CBN increased key interest rate for 6 times, rising from 6.25% to 12%. On 31 January 2012, CBN decided to maintain the key interest rate at 12%, in order to reduce the impact of inflation due to reduction in fuel subsidies.
