In the late 1800’s millions of immigrants began arriving in New York City by steamship. Many of these newcomers had no money and no family as they stepped off the boat. Fortunately, Methodist missionary Alma Mathews and members of the Woman’s Home Missionary Society were there to greet young women and guide them to safety. Mathews spent 40 years meeting boats and making sure these new Americans had clothing, a meal, and a bed to sleep in. Learn more about this Methodist woman who put her faith into action and changed history.

“The black residents of Selma impressed me, as I remember. I could feel their support and I had the feeling that those persons were vicariously identifying with us, that we were standing up for them in ways that they could not stand up for themselves.” The Rev. Gilbert H. Caldwell was a young United Methodist pastor in Boston when he got the call to join a march in Alabama led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In March 1965, Caldwell crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge with hundreds of others who wanted fair treatment for all people and voting rights to be ensured for black Americans. “There was just so much vi

Years before the American Revolution, Methodism arrived in the New World. The first classes met at the home of Robert Strawbridge and his wife in New Windsor, Maryland. Included in that group of early believers was an African-American slave named Annie Sweitzer. Sweitzer is considered one of America’s first Methodists. Even then, the denomination was known for open hearts and open doors. “She (Annie Sweitzer) was welcomed there. She was not there as a slave, as an African-American. She was there as one more person opening her heart to Christ,” says the Rev. Jim Talley with the Strawbridge Foundation.

When you step through the doors of Tindley Temple United Methodist Church in Philadelphia, you are on hallowed ground. See the sanctuary and the pews built by generations of dedicated former slaves and free men. And stand before the grand pipe organ in a birthplace of gospel music. Most people have never heard of the Methodist composer and preacher, the Rev. Charles Albert Tindley, but his lyrics became one of the most recognizable songs of the American civil rights movement in the 1960s, ‘We shall overcome.’ “Wow. Now, you want to talk about being proud to be Methodist, that’s a reason to be proud to be Methodis

Why Study the Eucharist in Contemporary Methodism with David Monkton
Dr David Monkton looks at how there has been a renewal of Eucharistic understanding in contemporary Methodism. This has come about from a variety of sources such as a rediscovery of Methodism’s roots in Anglicanism, the influence of the ecumenical movements (and the Lima Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry document in particular), and the impact of ‘the liturgical movement’ in Christianity.

“It’s all about good works, and good pies!” Some members of First United Methodist Church in Gautier, Mississippi use their culinary skills and their compassion to help their neighbors. The Pie Ladies have raised many thousands of dollars by selling their sweet treats, and all the proceeds go to those in need. And they readily admit that the secret ingredient in their creations is love. This is a UMTV encore video, originally produced in 2005.
