Lesotho's Prime Minister Thomas Thabane had accused his country's army of mounting a coup against him as he visited South Africa, but the military denied seeking to oust him and said its soldiers had returned to barracks. Political tensions have been high in the tiny kingdom since June when there was a power struggle after Thabane suspended parliament to dodge a vote of no confidence. At the time, South Africa warned against simmering conflict. Speaking to Al Jazeera on Saturday from an undisclosed location in South Africa, Thabane said the army had taken over government buildings and said that the current situation in Lesotho can be defined as a coup. "I am talking to you from a venue in South Africa because I left yesterday late and this morning the army commander and the cohorts following him were all over the streets looking for me, what they were going to do - I do not know," the prime minister told Al Jazeera. But Lesotho's deputy Prime Minister Mothet Joa Metsing denied that the landlocked nation, located within eastern South Africa, was undergoing an attempted coup. "This is not a coup - let us get that straight. I would not still be a deputy prime minister now; the prime minister would not still be the prime minister if a coup [had] taken place in Lesotho," said Metsing, speaking to Al Jazeera from Mafeteng. He refused to condemn the actions of the army, saying that the army had given reasons as to why it occupied government buildings. Metsing had previously vowed to form a new coalition that would oust Thabane after the political situation there escalated in June. The military had gathered intelligence that the police were going to arm factions participating in a demonstration planned for Monday by one of the coalition parties, the Lesotho Congress for Democracy, Major Ntlele Ntoi, defence forces spokesman, told the Associated Press news agency. Police disarmed The army disarmed police in the capital, Maseru, to avoid bloodshed, Ntoi said. An exchange of gunfire between the military, youths and police injured one soldier and four policemen, he said. "The arms have been removed and they are in military custody. The military has returned to the barracks," Ntoi said, denying reports of any coup attempt. "We are not in a position now or in the future to stage a coup. All we do is to carry out our mandate to secure our country and property." Diplomatic sources said the army made its move after the prime minister had fired the army commander, Lieutenant-General Kennedy Tlali Kamoli. The army spokesman said Kamoli was still in charge of the military. But South Africa's foreign ministry said they were monitoring the situation in Lesotho on Saturday, adding that an unconsitutional change of government would not be tolerated by the region. "By all accounts the actions of the Lesotho defence force bear the hallmarks of a coup d'etat," said Clayson Monyela, the spokesman for the ministry. Since its independence from Britain in 1966, Lesotho has undergone a number of military coups. In 1998 at least 58 locals and eight South African soldiers died and large parts of Maseru were damaged during a political stand-off and subsequent fighting. The landlocked country's first coalition government was formed in 2012 after competitive elections that ousted the 14-year incumbent Pakalitha Mosisili, who peacefully stepped down from power. The coalition has since been fragile. Political stability returned after constitutional reforms, and parliamentary elections were peacefully held in 2002.

Sierra Leone declares Ebola lockdown Sierra Leone - one of the countries worst hit by West Africa's Ebola outbreak - has announced a four-day lockdown to try to tackle the disease. From 18 to 21 September people will not be allowed to leave their homes, a senior official said. The aim of the move is to allow health workers to isolate new cases to prevent the disease from spreading further. The outbreak has killed about 2,100 people in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria in recent months. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday that health workers could be given vaccines as from November, when safety tests are completed. More than 20 health workers have lost their lives to the virus in Sierra Leone since the start of the outbreak in March. Last month Liberia sealed off a large slum in the capital, Monrovia, for more than a week in an attempt to contain the virus. The disease infects humans through close contact with infected animals, including chimpanzees, fruit bats and forest antelope. It then spreads between humans by direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids or organs, or indirectly through contact with contaminated environments. Even though the country's security forces have already been deployed to quarantine certain areas, it remains unclear how such a countrywide lockdown can be enforced, the BBC's West Africa correspondent Thomas Fessy reports from Senegal. The population's willingness to obey will be key for it to succeed - a forcible implementation is likely to raise human rights issues and could potentially spark violent demonstrations, our correspondent adds. A presidential adviser described the measure as aggressive but argued that it was necessary to deal with the spread of EbolaMeanwhile, officials in Nigeria have decided to reopen schools in the country from 22 September. They were closed as a precaution to prevent the spread of the virus. On Friday, the WHO announced that the blood of patients who recovered from Ebola should be used to treat others. People produce antibodies in the blood in an attempt to fight off an Ebola infection. The antibodies may be able to help a sick patient's immune system if they are transferred. However, large scale data on the effectiveness of the therapy is lacking.. Every year we have Davos. Every year inequality is said to be high on the agenda - while policy makers and business people sip champagne in an exclusive ski resort in Switzerland. And every year the rich are getting richer. Before the meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos that ends on Friday, Oxfam released a report on the share of wealth. It shows that the gap between the very rich and the rest of the world continues to widen. Last year the richest 1 percent owned 48 percent of global wealth. It's expected the 1 percent will own half of the world's wealth by next year. That leaves the other half for 99 percent of adults on the planet. Someone who is passionate about this subject and speaking out globally is former cabinet minister and labour leader, Jay Naidoo. Jay is the current chair of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition. He has just returned from discussing inequality at an event held by Oxfam and the University of Oxford. And he joins us now. My niece Dineo shows how she wraps her 14-month old for carrying on her back. Update: PLEASE HELP kids in Lesotho! Nearly 40000 people have now viewed this video. Dineo is from Johannesburg South Africa but her family comes from Lesotho -- a mountain country with little money and little food (because their farmlands were stolen 150 years ago). If 40000 people had each given US $1, it would have fed 8000 Lesotho children FOR A MONTH. Dineo's cousin is a church minister in Lesotho who has next to no money, and his parishioners are all subsistence farmers with no money -- yet they run a feeding club giving a hot meal a day to hungry kids. They feed a child for a month on $5. If you want to send this minister your $5, or even $1, send me an email (preservation.guide@gmail.com) and I'll supply details. -- If you feel safer giving to a very well-known (UK's Prince Harry is a founder) Lesotho charity, try http://sentebale.org/ Tell them Dineo sent you!

Lesotho Prime Minister alleges army coup attempt, seeks help from South Africa | BREAKING NEWS For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperNewsPlanet An attempted military coup took place in Lesotho Saturday, the country's Prime Minister, Thomas Thabane, said in an interview aired by South African broadcaster eNCA. The Lesotho government is seeking the assistance of the South African government and other neighboring states, Thabane said. The Prime Minister said that since the Lesotho military was looking for him, he decided "to get out of the way," and fled to an unknown location. "In my political life, it was not the first time that I saw this kind of activity by the Lesotho army," Thabane said. A lot of effort has been made to reform the military and to "make it a normal army that is subject to the civilian authority," according to Thabane. He told the broadcaster he would not resign. Rescuers free 20 miners trapped underground for hours in Nicaragua | BREAKING NEWS - 30 AUG 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperNewsPlanet Rescuers freed 20 workers from a mine in Nicaragua late Friday, dozens of hours after it collapsed and buried them underground, authorities said. Five miners remain trapped in the mine near Bonanza in the northern mountains, first lady Rosario Murillo told El 19 Digital. The nation's first lady also serves as a government spokeswoman. "Right now we are giving infinite thanks to God and the Virgin for having saved from almost certain death 20 brother miners," she said. Since it's collapse on Thursday, they had spent 34 hours trapped in the silver and gold mine. An unknown number of miners escaped and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Shortly after getting trapped, the miners called out for help. Their screams were heard by fellow workers who used a tunnel to get close to where they were trapped, government spokeswoman Milagros Solórzano told El 19 Digital. The nation's civil defense, army and members of the mining company EMCO are collaborating on the rescue, according to the report. Nouakchott, Mauritania: A woman has put forward a rare bid for the presidency of Mauritania, a west African nation run under strict Islamic law, the country's Constitutional Council said Wednesday, "Lalla Mariem Mint Moulaye Idriss dropped off a file at the Constitutional Council containing her candidacy for the June 21 presidential elections," the body said in a statement. Idriss, 57, an independent candidate, is only the second woman to ever seek election in a presidential poll in Mauritania, following the candidacy of Aicha Mint Jedeine who ran in 2003. Women are weakly represented in the Islamic country, occupying only 20 percent of elected posts, and calls for equality in politics have grown. Idriss, married with four children, is the head of the governing body of the Mauritanian news agency AMI. The tourism potential in Lesotho is exceptional and has been referred to as the "sleeping giant" in the tourism industry as it has the greatest balance of nature and urban life. Sani Pass is the only road over the Lesotho / KwaZulu-Natal border. This video was produced by SmartGuide for their Interactive Travel Guide of Southern Africa.
At 52 800 square km, Central Kalahari Game Reserve, referred to as CKGR, is the second largest game reserve in the world. Larger than Lesotho and Swaziland combined. Self Drive Do it Yourself Botswana: http://www.selfdrive4x4.co.za/ A desert in name, the CKGR supports diverse habitats - from salt pan to savannah. The land is home to at least 64 species of mammals and 250 types of birds. Meandering through these great open spaces are four fossil river valleys - the most famous being Deception. Countless pans and dunes are concentrated in the northern third of the Reserve. The roads around Deception are in excellent condition, but could become slippery during the wet season and 4 wheel drive might be necessary. It is here in Deception Valley where Mark and Delia Owen researched the brown hyena for 7 years. Their book "Cry of the Kalahari" makes excellent reading. The valley is scattered with islands of trees. Here on one of these islands, the Owens have put up camp. The world-renowned San people have lived in this area for perhaps 30 000 years. Originally the reserve was set up in 1961 to protect the natural resources on which the San Hunter-gatherer-lifestyle depended. As there is little or no surface water, the game rely on artificial water holes scattered through the park. Other than Deception, these water holes offer good game viewing like those at Sundays Pan and Letiahau. After good rains, the harsh landscape is transferred into a green haven for thousands of springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest. Giraffe, cheetah, hyena, jackal and lion also roam the valley. http://www.africaadventures.co.za/ or http://www.africaafrica.co.za/

All Africa 2015-03-18Lesotho (i/lɨˈsuːtuː/ li-SOO-too), officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a landlocked country and enclave, completely surrounded by its only neighboring country, the Republic of South Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size with a population of approximately 2,067,000. Its capital and largest city is Maseru. Lesotho is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The name Lesotho translates roughly into the land of the people who speak Sesotho. About 40% of the population live below the international poverty line of US $1.25 a day.
The earliest known inhabitants of the area were Khoisan hunter-gatherers. They were largely replaced by Wasja-speaking tribes during Bantu migrations. The Sotho-Tswana people colonized the general region of South Africa between the 3rd and 11th centuries.
The present Lesotho (then called Basutoland) emerged as a single polity under king Moshoeshoe I in 1822. Moshoeshoe, a son of Mokhachane, a minor chief of the Bakoteli lineage, formed his own clan and became a chief around 1804. Between 1821 and 1823, he and his followers settled at the Butha-Buthe Mountain, joining with former adversaries in resistance against the Lifaqane associated with the reign of Shaka Zulu from 1818 to 1828.[citation needed]
