A semi-arid climate or steppe climate are climatic regions that receive precipitation below potential evapotranspiration, but not extremely. A more precise definition is given by the Köppen climate classification that treats steppe climates (BSk and BSh) as intermediates between desert climates (BW) and humid climates in ecological characteristics and agricultural potential. Semi-arid climates tend to support short or scrubby vegetation, with semi-arid areas usually dominated by either grasses or shrubs. To determine if a location has a semi-arid climate, the precipitation threshold must first be determined. Finding the precipitation threshold (in millimeters) involves first multiplying the average annual temperature in °C by 20, then adding 280 if 70% or more of the total precipitation is in the high-sun half of the year (April through September in the Northern Hemisphere, or October through March in the Southern), or 140 if 30%–70% of the total precipitation is received during the applicable period, or 0 if less than 30% of the total precipitation is so received. If the area's annual precipitation is less than the threshold but more than half the threshold, it is classified as a BS (steppe climate). This video is targeted to blind users. The Ministry of Agriculture is embarking on 3-year food programme in semi arid areas of Kiambu County, to increase food security, the agriculture cabinet secretary Felix Koskei has announced. Speaking in Limuru and Kikuyu respectively, Koskei said the population of Ndeiya, Karai and Nachu areas has over the years depended on food aid owing to the frequent crop failures. The programme seeks to develop an integrated and sustainable food and nutrition security model with each household receiving free seeds of drought tolerant maize and beans varieties. Demonstrations will also be carried out to enhance the farmers’ capacity in crop production through irrigation and soil conservation. School pupils from arid and semi arid areas are set to benefit from a project dubbed Homegrown School Feeding Programme that was launched today in Nairobi. The aim of the project is to promote the supply of local produce to surrounding institutions of learning to feed pupils from needy regions across the country. Already 12,000 farmers from Lamu, Narok, Laikipia, Kitui, Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo have been incorporated in the programme. Netherlands Development Organization, Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology support the programme. This year the government allocated 800 million shillings to school feeding programmes. Migratory Demoiselle Cranes flying over rural Khichan village in Rajasthan, India. The demoiselle crane (Anthropoides virgo) is a species of crane found in central Eurasia, ranging from the Black Sea to Mongolia and North Eastern China. There is also a small breeding population in Turkey. These cranes are migratory birds. Birds from western Eurasia will spend the winter in Africa whilst the birds from Asia, Mongolia and China will spend the winter in the Indian subcontinent. The bird is symbolically significant in the culture of North India, where it is known as the koonj. The demoiselle crane lives in a variety of different environments, including desert areas and numerous types of grasslands (flooded, mountain, temperate and tropical grassland) which are often within a few hundred metres of streams or lakes. However, when nesting, they prefer patchy areas of vegetation which is tall enough to conceal them and their nests, yet short enough to allow them look out for predators whilst incubating their eggs. Demoiselle cranes have to take one of the toughest migrations in the world. In late August through September, they gather in flocks of up to 400 individuals and prepare for their flight to their winter range. During their migratory flight south, demoiselles fly like all cranes, with their head and neck straight forward and their feet and legs straight behind, reaching altitudes of 16,000-26,000 feet (4,875-7,925 m). Along their arduous journey they have to cross the Himalayan mountains to get to their over-wintering grounds in India. Many die from fatigue, hunger and predation from golden eagles. Simpler, lower routes are possible, such as crossing the range via the Khyber Pass. However, their presently preferred route has been hard-wired by countless cycles of migration. At their wintering grounds, demoiselles have been observed flocking with common cranes, their combined totals reaching up to 20,000 individuals. Demoiselles maintain separate social groups within the larger flock. In March and April, they begin their long spring journey back to their northern nesting grounds. In Khichan, Rajasthan in India, villagers feed the cranes on their migration and these large congregations have become an annual spectacle. The demoiselle crane is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies. Migratory birds can be seen at many places, but what is special about this village Khichan is that the locals of the village offer quintals of grains to the birds early morning in a rectangular enclosure every day. The villagers enjoy a special relationship with the birds. These Eurasian cranes fly out of the breeding grounds of steppes and start flocking in and around the various water bodies of Khichan. They fly in from August and spend the winter months here. The Turkana are a Nilotic people native to the Turkana District in northwest Kenya, a semi-arid climate region bordering Lake Turkana in the east, Pokot, Rendille and Samburu to the south, Uganda to the west, and Sudan and Ethiopia to the north. They refer to their land as Turkan.
According to the 2009 Kenyan census, Turkana number 855,399, or 2.5% of the Kenyan population, making Turkana the third largest Nilotic ethnic group in Kenya, after the Kalenjin and the Luo, slightly more numerous than the Maasai, and the tenth largest ethnicity in all of Kenya. Although this figure was initially controversial and rejected as too large by Planning Minister Wycliffe Oparanya, a court ruling (Feb 7, 2012) by Justice Mohammed Warsame stated that the Kenyan government accepts the 2009 census figures for Turkana.
The language of the Turkana, an Eastern Nilotic language, is also called Turkana; their own name for it is ŋaTurkana or aŋajep a ŋaTurkana.
The Turkana people call themselves ŋiTurkana (The Turkana). The name means the people of Turkan. They are mainly semi-nomadic pastoralists.
City lights in your eyes ‘til the morning rises
And swallows up your pride
Feel the alive, fell the fire this smoke is infectious
One dance left, pray you don’t get burnt
Sell your lies ‘til the nightmare defines you
And swallows up your life
To ignite to inspire, these foreign objectives
One more chance, pray you don’t get hurt
Oh my God we’re going down
City lights for a serenade
Shooting stars on your wedding day
Fall apart when I see your face
And run away, run away
Open eyes, fall apart when the morning rises
Lighting all your cracks
Take a call, someone old, when you coming home girl
One breath left, pray you make it last
Oh my God we’re going down
City lights for a serenade
Shooting stars on your wedding day
Fall apart when I see your face
And run away, run away
Go tell your lies
(go tell your lies)
I’m looking in your eyes
(in your eyes)
And I can see to my surprise, your light that used to
shine
Fades into City lights
(these city lights)
City lights for a serenade
Shooting stars on your wedding day
Fall apart when I see your face
Sunlight open up my eyes
Maybe I’ll be fine again, again, again
Sober, running out of lies
Maybe ill be fine again, again, again
Oh get ready I’m a light in the dark
It’s the fire in your belly and the blood in your heart
Gonna bury my foes, tear them apart
Electrical, Electrical
Take your time and make it last
Maybe I will cry again, again, again
Let go twenty years the past
Watch me as I fly again, again, again
Oh get ready I’m a light in the dark
It’s the fire in your belly and the blood in your heart
Gonna bury my foes, tear them apart
Electrical, Electrical
Can you feel it in your lungs
Everything that you’ve become
Electrical, electrical
Oh get ready I’m a light in the dark
It’s the fire in your belly and the blood in your heart
Gonna bury my foes, tear them apart
