Vietnam War - Simplified!
Learn more - http://www.battleoflongtan.com Late afternoon August 18, 1966 South Vietnam -- for three and a half hours, in the pouring rain, amid the mud and shattered trees of a rubber plantation called Long Tan, Major Harry Smith and his dispersed company of 108 young and mostly inexperienced Australian and New Zealand soldiers are fighting for their lives, holding off an overwhelming enemy force of 2,500 battle hardened Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers. With their ammunition running out, their casualties mounting and the enemy massing for a final assault each man begins to search for his own answer -- and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage. The ensuing Battle of Long Tan becomes one of the most savage and decisive engagements in ANZAC history, earning both the United States and South Vietnamese Presidential Unit Citations for gallantry along with many individual awards. But sadly not before 18 Australians and more than 500 enemy are killed. Heroism, tragedy and the sacrifice of battle, Long Tan is a grueling and dramatic exploration of war with all its horror, that will rightly take its place alongside war classics such as Gallipoli, Breaker Morant, Saving Private Ryan, Zulu & Blackhawk Down. This documentary and our upcoming movie is a tribute to the nobility and uncommon valor of these men -- many of them conscripts - under fire. It honors their loyalty to their country and to each other, and it brings to light the heroism and unimaginable sacrifice of all military men and women both home and abroad. Long Tan is the true story of ordinary boys who became extraordinary men. This Anglo-American documentary was first broadcast in the UK in 2005. It is a remarkable story of courage, despair and immense conviction from both sides of the Vietnam conflict. It will be of great use to students of the period and the events, and it also throws oblique light on the nature of all wars. Uploaded for educational purposes only. Comments are welcome but very strictly controlled. I will accept no aggression, intolerant language or unsupported assertions that do not fully engage with the film and its content.
Please Enjoy and Subscribe. Thanks! The Vietnam War was the longest and most unpopular war in which Americans ever fought. And there is no reckoning the cost. The toll in suffering, sorrow, in rancorous national turmoil can never be tabulated. No one wants ever to see America so divided again. And for many of the more than two million American veterans of the war, the wounds of Vietnam will never heal. Fifty-eight thousand Americans lost their lives. The losses to the Vietnamese people were appalling. The financial cost to the United States comes to something over $150 billion dollars. Direct American involvement began in 1955 with the arrival of the first advisors. The first combat troops arrived in 1965 and we fought the war until the cease-fire of January 1973. To a whole new generation of young Americans today, it seems a story from the olden times. In 1983, the unfolding of the Vietnam tragedy was the focus of an extraordinary documentary series broadcast on public television. PBS - American Experience: Vietnam War (Full Documentary)

In the post-war era, Americans struggled to absorb the lessons of the military intervention. As General Maxwell Taylor, one of the principal architects of the war, noted, "First, we didn't know ourselves. We thought that we were going into another Korean War, but this was a different country. Secondly, we didn't know our South Vietnamese allies... And we knew less about North Vietnam. Who was Ho Chi Minh? Nobody really knew. So, until we know the enemy and know our allies and know ourselves, we'd better keep out of this kind of dirty business. It's very dangerous." Some have suggested that "the responsibility for the ultimate failure of this policy [America's withdrawal from Vietnam] lies not with the men who fought, but with those in Congress..." Alternatively, the official history of the United States Army noted that "tactics have often seemed to exist apart from larger issues, strategies, and objectives. Yet in Vietnam the Army experienced tactical success and strategic failure... The...Vietnam War...legacy may be the lesson that unique historical, political, cultural, and social factors always impinge on the military...Success rests not only on military progress but on correctly analyzing the nature of the particular conflict, understanding the enemy's strategy, and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of allies. A new humility and a new sophistication may form the best parts of a complex heritage left to the Army by the long, bitter war in Vietnam." U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger wrote in a secret memo to President Gerald Ford that "in terms of military tactics, we cannot help draw the conclusion that our armed forces are not suited to this kind of war. Even the Special Forces who had been designed for it could not prevail." Even Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara concluded that "the achievement of a military victory by U.S. forces in Vietnam was indeed a dangerous illusion." Doubts surfaced as to the effectiveness of large-scale, sustained bombing. As Army Chief of Staff Harold Keith Johnson noted, "if anything came out of Vietnam, it was that air power couldn't do the job." Even General William Westmoreland admitted that the bombing had been ineffective. As he remarked, "I still doubt that the North Vietnamese would have relented." The inability to bomb Hanoi to the bargaining table also illustrated another U.S. miscalculation. The North's leadership was composed of hardened communists who had been fighting for independence for thirty years. They had defeated the French, and their tenacity as both nationalists and communists was formidable. Ho Chi Minh is quoted as saying, "You can kill ten of my men for every one I kill of yours...But even at these odds you will lose and I will win." The Vietnam War called into question the U.S. Army doctrine. Marine Corps General Victor H. Krulak heavily criticised Westmoreland's attrition strategy, calling it "wasteful of American lives... with small likelihood of a successful outcome." In addition, doubts surfaced about the ability of the military to train foreign forces. Between 1965 and 1975, the United States spent $111 billion on the war ($686 billion in FY2008 dollars). This resulted in a large federal budget deficit. More than 3 million Americans served in the Vietnam War, some 1.5 million of whom actually saw combat in Vietnam. James E. Westheider wrote that "At the height of American involvement in 1968, for example, there were 543,000 American military personnel in Vietnam, but only 80,000 were considered combat troops." Conscription in the United States had been controlled by the President since World War II, but ended in 1973." By war's end, 58,220 American soldiers had been killed, more than 150,000 had been wounded, and at least 21,000 had been permanently disabled. According to Dale Kueter, "Sixty-one percent of those killed were age 21 or younger. Of those killed in combat, 86.3 percent were white, 12.5 percent were black and the remainder from other races." The youngest American KIA in the war was PFC Dan Bullock, who had falsified his birth certificate and enlisted in the US Marines at age 14 and who was killed in combat at age 15. Approximately 830,000 Vietnam veterans suffered symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. An estimated 125,000 Americans fled to Canada to avoid the Vietnam draft, and approximately 50,000 American servicemen deserted. In 1977, United States President Jimmy Carter granted a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all Vietnam-era draft dodgers. The Vietnam War POW/MIA issue, concerning the fate of U.S. service personnel listed as missing in action, persisted for many years after the war's conclusion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War

Vietnam War Documentary HD: Cambodian Genocide by U.S Army in Viet nam War? As a whole Vietnam War took place between 1956 - 1975 (Fall of Saigon). 195,000-430,000 South platoon civilians died in the war. 50,000-65,000 North Vietnamese civilians died in the war. U.S. Military Causalities of around 58,209. Before World War 2, Vietnam was the part of the French Empire. Saigon was the capital of French Colony of Cochinchina. Communist struggle started by fighting French colonial power in late 1940s led by nationalist leader Ho Chi Minh, came to an end in 1975 by controlling the whole country. Which includes events of Monks (Thich Quang Duc) self-immolation in 1963 and protest of the U.S. citizens in America. Vietnam War is also referred as "American War" in Vietnam. Though it was a conflict Between North Vietnam and South Vietnam, it turned out to be a WAR between Communist and anti-communist countries backing their sides in Vietnam. Soviet Union, china and other communist allies supported North Vietnam and U.S.A with other anti-communist countries supported South Vietnam. Viet Cong's a North front fought a guerrilla war against heavily armed America by aiming to reunify Vietnam under one rule of communism. On the other hand U.S active military intervention was from 1965 - 1973 and was mainly involved in the war to stop the spreading of communism by using overwhelming firepower and heavy airstrikes against North. US was concerned particularly with "Domino Theory", that if Asian nation fell to the communist ideology then other countries would follow quickly. In 1968 General VO Nguyen Giap led the "Tet offensive" and was a major surprise offensive against American and south Vietnamese forces on the lunar New Year celebrations. U.S. Embassy was invaded in Saigon and many capitals throughout the country were attacked. Though the Causalities were very high for North, but American media played a disaster for the white house and to the presidency of the U.S president Lyndon Johnson. America withdrawn the forces in 1973 as a result of the Case-Church Amendment passed by the U.S congress and later within 2 years the unification of Vietnam came under communist control with the capture of Saigon. Around 3 million people (includes 58,000 Americans) were killed in the war. Tiến Quân Ca is the Vietnam Song of Marching. Also the National Anthem. U.S. Presidents and their key role: • Dwight Eisenhower (Sent advisers 1955-61) • John F. Kennedy (Increased involvement of CIA and US ambassadors) • Lyndon Johnson (After Tonkin gulf incident, sent US combat troops 1964) • Richard Nixon (Negotiated treaty 1973, withdrew troops, allowing collapse of the south) • Gerald Ford (With funds cut off, declared the US war ended April 23, 1975) References and Further readings: U.S. Presidents during Vietnam War: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_was_president_of_the_US_during_the_Vietnam_War?#slide=5 Vietnam War History: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/asia_pac/05/vietnam_war/html/introduction.stm Tet offensive: http://www.vwam.com/vets/tet/tet.html Wikipedia Vietnam War: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_war History channel: http://www.history.com/topics/vietnam-war Britannica.com Vietnam War: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/628478/Vietnam-War CNN Facts on Vietnam Wars : http://edition.cnn.com/2013/07/01/world/vietnam-war-fast-facts/ Protest Against the Vietnam War : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protests_against_the_Vietnam_War Best American Experience Documentary : http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/vietnam/ The Viet nam War Overview : http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/vietnam_war0.htm Australian Military Involvement in Vietnam War: http://www.awm.gov.au/atwar/vietnam.asp Historical places rare footage of the war and details : www.historyplace.com/unitedstates/vietnam/ Deaths in viet nam : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War_casualties United States military casualties of wars : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_military_casualties_of_war Viet nam Veterans of USA: http://thewall-usa.com/ Viet nam Wars from the Khan Academy : https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/history/euro-hist/cold-war/v/vietnam-war New Zealand's Military in Viet nam War: http://www.vietnamwar.govt.nz/ Ho Chi Minh - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ho_Chi_Minh Extra Tags: war movie vietnam, documentary vietnam war,the war in vietnam, war movies best full movie, war documentary movie, vietnam war documentary, war vietnam documentary, the vietnam war documentary, documentary movies, the vietnam war, vietnam war movies, war, war movie, vietnam full movie, bbc documentary, history channel documentary, national geographic documentary, documentary full, bbc Share with us: Google +: https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/109668756288698851802/109668756288698851802/posts/p/pub See more Vietnam Documentary videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/VietnamWarDocumentry

K.C and The Sunshine Band - I'm Your Boogie Man (36:05) The Vietnam war was a political war against the spread of Communism fought by the South Vietnamese Army, US Army, United States Marine Corp, Central Intelligence Agency and Military Assistance Command, Vietnam -- Studies and Observations Group (you might know them as MACV-SOG), New Zealand and Australia, against the North Vietnamese Army and VietCong (you may know them as 'Victor Charlie') It started off in 1954 (well, the war did, it actually started long before with Ho Chi Minh), when the USSR backed NVA and VC rebelled against the French for independence (back then Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were known as the French Indochina) the NVA got their independence in 1955, but the French kept fighting until the USMC and Army stepped in in 1956 (you may say it was 1965, but that was when large groups of soldiers were sent to Vietnam, which is why some see it as the beginning of US intervention). The US took control not to help the French but to stop the spread of Communism. In a military point of view, Vietnam was a great victory for America; they won every major battle. However, Vietnam is seen as a loss because they lost politically, resulting in a Communist Vietnam. The USMC and US army withdrew from Vietnam in 1973, leaving South Vietnam to fight for themselves. They lost every battle and in 1975, the NVA took Saigon, the South Vietnamese capitol. The CIA and MACV-SOG quickly got out of Saigon in 1975. In 1968, a cease fire was agreed for the Vietnamese new year, Tet. The NVA broke the cease fire and attacked in huge numbers 100 towns and cities, including 36 of 44 provincial capitals, five of the six autonomous cities, 72 of 245 district towns, and the southern capital. Despite being surprise attacked, it was a tactical victory for the SVA and USA. The Tet offensives were from Jan-Feb, Aug-Sept From 1965 - 1968, the USA launched Operation Rolling Thunder led by Joseph Moore, William Momyer and George Brown, these were huge carpet bombings on NVA bases, towns and Bridges. Several aircraft were used in Rolling Thunder including the F-4 Phantom, F-105 Thunderchief, B-66 Tactical Bomber and mainly the B-52 Stratofotress. Operation Rolling Thunder was risky business. Robert McNamara (the secretary of defense) argued that Rolling Thunder may result in direct confontration with the USSR military, making it a World War. Rolling thunder was dropped in 1968, because it was too expensive and wasn't stopping the NVA's military effort and was also killing more civilians than Soldiers. 50,000 NVA were killed, 158,000 civilians were killed. In conclusion, the Vietnam war was a gruesome war with terrible methods of killing and victory. It was laid back too, compared to the other wars such as WW2. It was a hell hole for the Americans. The terrain was not well known and many of the enlisted soldiers had not had previous experience with this kind of enemy. As for the soldiers, Saluto. You did a great job for your country, you were valorous and fought well. To the ones who died, we will remember you always. By the way I wrote this all by myself off the top of my head, yes I know that much:)

Antiwar 2015-04-08The Vietnam War was a Cold War-era military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. This war followed the First Indochina War and was fought between North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other anti-communist countries. The Viet Cong (also known as the National Liberation Front, or NLF), a lightly armed South Vietnamese communist-controlled common front, largely fought a guerrilla war against anti-communist forces in the region. The Vietnam People's Army (North Vietnamese Army) engaged in a more conventional war, at times committing large units into battle. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces relied on air superiority and overwhelming firepower to conduct search and destroy operations, involving ground forces, artillery, and airstrikes.
The U.S. government viewed involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam as part of their wider strategy of containment. The North Vietnamese government and Viet Cong viewed the conflict as a colonial war, fought initially against France, backed by the U.S., and later against South Vietnam, which it regarded as a U.S. puppet state. American military advisors arrived in what was then French Indochina beginning in 1950. U.S. involvement escalated in the early 1960s, with troop levels tripling in 1961 and tripling again in 1962. U.S. combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Operations spanned international borders, with Laos and Cambodia heavily bombed. American involvement in the war peaked in 1968, at the time of the Tet Offensive. After this, U.S. ground forces were gradually withdrawn as part of a policy known as Vietnamization. Despite the Paris Peace Accords, signed by all parties in January 1973, fighting continued.
Vietnam ( listen), formally the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam; listen), is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. With an estimated 91.5 million inhabitants as of 2012, it is the world's 13th-most-populous country, and the eighth-most-populous Asian country. The name Vietnam translates as "South Viet", and was officially adopted in 1945. The country is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, and the South China Sea to the east.
The Vietnamese became independent from Imperial China in 938 AD, following the Battle of Bạch Đằng River. Successive Vietnamese royal dynasties flourished as the nation expanded geographically and politically into Southeast Asia, until the Indochina Peninsula was colonized by the French in the mid-19th century. The First Indochina War eventually led to the expulsion of the French in 1954, leaving Vietnam divided politically into two states, North and South Vietnam. Conflict between the two sides intensified, with heavy foreign intervention, during the Vietnam War, which ended with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975.
Samuel Henry J. "Sam" Worthington (born 2 August 1976) is an Australian-English actor, best known for his starring roles in the feature films Avatar, Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans, and its sequel, Wrath of the Titans.
In 2004, Worthington received Australia's highest film award for his lead performance in Somersault. He performed predominantly in leading roles in a variety of low-budget films before transitioning to major studio films, ranging from romantic drama and comedy-drama to science fiction and action. Worthington is also noted for his voicework as Alex Mason in the 2010 video game Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Worthington was born to English parents in Godalming, Surrey, in southeastern England, and moved to Perth, Western Australia when he was six months old. He grew up in Warnbro, a suburb of Rockingham. His mother, Jeanne J. (née Martyn), a homemaker, raised him and his sister Lucinda, and his father, Ronald W. Worthington, was a power plant employee. He attended John Curtin College of the Arts, a school specialising in the dramatic arts, located in Fremantle, Western Australia, where he studied drama but failed to graduate and dropped out.[citation needed] His father gave him $400 and sent him on a one-way trip to Cairns in Queensland, and told him to "work his way home".[citation needed] He began working on construction and odd jobs, eventually settling in Sydney, New South Wales. At 19, he worked as a bricklayer, when he auditioned for the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and was accepted with scholarship.
