Syngman Rhee or Yi Seungman (Hangul: 이승만; Hanja: 李承晩; Korean pronunciation: [i sɯŋman]; March 26, 1875 – July 19, 1965) was the first president of South Korea. His presidency, from August 1948 to April 1960, remains controversial, affected by Cold War tensions on the Korean peninsula and elsewhere.
Rhee was regarded as an anti-Communist and a strongman, and he led South Korea through the Korean War. His presidency ended in resignation following popular protests against a disputed election. He died in exile in Hawaii.
Syngman Rhee was born on March 26, 1875 into a rural family of modest means in Hwanghae Province, Korea. Rhee was the youngest of five siblings, though his elder brothers died prematurely. Rhee's family traced its lineage back to the third king of the Chosŏn Dynasty. When Rhee was two years old, the family moved to Seoul. His early education involved primarily classic Chinese literature; though he attempted civil service examinations, he failed them multiple times. When reforms abolished traditional systems of education, Rhee enrolled in Paejae School, an institution which had been established by a missionary from the United States. Rhee learned English and began a school newspaper, Maeil Sinmun.

While he never lived to see reconciliation in his country, he was part of the civil rights struggle in the US, and returned to Korea, reuniting with his sisters after a separation of more than 40 years.

Choi You-sun sends us this report from Lima.
Amid much fanfare over her visit, President Park Geun-hye is scheduled to have a summit meeting with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala on Monday.
"Even before her arrival, local media reported on President Park′s visit and the future of Seoul-Lima relations."
In an interview with Peruvian daily Gestion, President Park said she recognized how far the two sides have come since implementing their FTA in 2011.
She said it′s now time for Seoul and Lima to talk about cooperating on infrastructure, health care and defense.
In fact, there′s speculation about whether her latest visit will pave the way for Korea to export its combat aircraft, including the FA-50, to Peru.
Korea Aerospace Industries is currently trying to sell the FA-50 to Peru.
During the president′s visit, a ceremony will be held to mark the first local production of a Korean trainer jet, the KT-1P.
Earlier, President Park spent her final day in Colombia offering her thanks to Colombian veterans who fought in the Korean War.
Colombia was the only South American country to send troops, and nearly 7-hundred Colombians were either killed or injured in the battle.
"Our friendship will continue and grow deeper, and the descendants of our two countries′ descendants will remember this friendship."
She spoke one-on-one with a veteran whom she had met 40 years ago during her father′s presidency and with another veteran who had sent a letter saying he wants to visit Korea.
President Park also met with Koreans who live in Colombia, praising their support for the veterans and their families.
She added that, as the two countries boost cooperation, there will be more opportunities for them in Colombian society.

As seen in this film, the savagery and violence created by the war have been wiped away with the generosity and love of the American soldier on duty in Korea. Housing, public buildings, businesses and transportation facilities have been patched together or constructed from scratch. American Army know-how, Army supervision, and Army equipment have played a vital role in this rehabilitation, working closely with the Korean people. Just as important has been the creation of a new Republic of Korea Army. This small force which was available for Korea's defense prior to the outbreak of the fighting, is now a part of history. Thousands of inexperienced young men have been trained by battle-seasoned American and Korean soldiers and turned into a smooth, well-drilled modern army, equipped with American weapons.

After the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War, Korea was occupied by Japan (1910–45). At the end of World War II, the Japanese surrendered to Soviet and U.S. forces who occupied the northern and southern halves of Korea, respectively.
Despite the initial plan of a unified Korea in the 1943 Cairo Declaration, escalating Cold War antagonism between the Soviet Union and the United States eventually led to the establishment of separate governments, each with its own ideology, leading to Korea's division into two political entities in 1948: North Korea and South Korea.
In the South Syngman Rhee, an opponent of communism, who had been backed and appointed by the United States as head of the provisional government, won the first presidential elections of the newly declared Republic of Korea in May. In the North, a former anti-Japanese guerrilla and communist activist, Kim Il-sung was appointed premier of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in September. In October the Soviet Union declared Kim Il-sung's government as sovereign over both parts. The UN declared Rhee's government as "a lawful government having effective control and jurisdiction over that part of Korea where the UN Temporary Commission on Korea was able to observe and consult" and the Government "based on elections which was observed by the Temporary Commission" in addition to a statement that "this is the only such government in Korea." Both leaders began an authoritarian repression of their political opponents inside their region, seeking for a unification of Korea under their control. While South Korea's request for military support was denied by the United States, North Korea's military was heavily reinforced by the Soviet Union.
On June 25, 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea, sparking the Korean War, the Cold War's first major conflict that continued until 1953. At the time, the Soviet Union had boycotted the United Nations (UN), thus forfeiting their veto rights. This allowed the UN to intervene in a civil war when it became apparent that the superior North Korean forces would unify the entire country. The Soviet Union and China backed North Korea, with the later participation of millions of Chinese troops. After an ebb and flow that saw both sides almost pushed to the brink of extinction, and massive losses among Korean civilians in both the north and the south, the war eventually reached a stalemate. The 1953 armistice, never signed by South Korea, split the peninsula along the demilitarized zone near the original demarcation line. No peace treaty was ever signed, resulting in the two countries remaining technically at war. Over 1.2 million people died during the Korean War.

This film is a study of American soldiers helping a nation to rebuild itself.

Korea after the Second World War was occupied by both the Soviets and the Americans, who respectively installed Kim Il Sung and Syngman Rhee as leaders. With Soviet support, North Korea invaded the South in 1950, pushing the unprepared South Korean and US forces back to Pusan. The world responds, both to combat communism and demonstrate support to the United Nations. After landing at Inchon and liberating Seoul, United Nations forces advance into North Korea. This unsettles Mao Tse Tung, who on Stalin's request sends Chinese forces into Korea and pushes the UN back. Eventually both sides are more or less at stalemate in the centre of Korea.

History of South Korea
The history of South Korea formally begins with its establishment on 15 August 1948, although Syngman Rhee had officially declared independence two days prior.
In the aftermath of the Japanese occupation of Korea which ended with Japan's defeat in World War II in 1945, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel north in accordance with a United Nations arrangement, to be administered by the Soviet Union in the north and the United States in the south. The Soviets and Americans were unable to agree on the implementation of Joint Trusteeship over Korea. This led in 1948 to the establishment of two separate governments, each claiming to be the legit

North Korea–South Korea relations (Korean: 남북관계, Nambukkwan'gye, hanja:南北關係) are the political, diplomatic, and military interactions between North Korea and South Korea, from the division of Korea in 1945 following World War II to today.
According to a 2013 BBC World Service Poll, 4% of South Koreans view North Korea's influence positively, with 90% expressing a negative view. However a 2014 government funded survey found only 13% of South Koreans viewed North Korea as hostile, and 58% of South Koreans believed North Korea was a country they should cooperate with.

On 29 September MacArthur restored the government of the Republic of Korea under Syngman Rhee.

Cold War Documentary Series - 05 Korea 1949-1953 Youtube
Korea after the Second World War was occupied by both the Soviets and the Americans, who respectively installed Kim Il-sung and Syngman Rhee as leaders. This unsettles Mao Zedong, who on Stalin's request sends Chinese forces into Korea and pushes the UN back. Eventually both sides are more or less at stalemate in the centre of Korea. After countless talks, eventually an armistice is signed. Communism was contained, but Korea would remain divided. Interviewees include Lucius D. Battle, Paik Sun Yup and John Glenn. The pre-credits scene shows a battle in progress - the first "hot war" of the cold war.

This led in 1948 to the establishment of two separate governments, each claiming to be the legitimate government of all of Korea. Eventually, following the Korean War, the two separate governments stabilized into the existing political entities of North and South Korea.

How North and South Korea Split: History, Conflict, Relations, Economy (1998)
North Korea–South Korea relations (Korean: 남북관계, Nambukkwan'gye, hanja:南北關係) are the political, diplomatic, and military interactions between North Korea and South Korea, from the division of Korea in 1945 following World War II to today.
According to a 2013 BBC World Service Poll, 4% of South Koreans view North Korea's influence positively, with 90% expressing a negative view. However a 2014 government funded survey found only 13% of South Koreans viewed North Korea as hostile, and 58% of South Koreans believed North Korea was a country they should cooperate with.
The Korean peninsula had been occupied by Japan from 1910 to 1945. After the defeat of Japan in World War II, the Korean peninsula was occupied by the Soviet Union in the North and the United States in the South. The dividing line was the 38th parallel north.
August 15, 1945 - Japan surrenders in World War II and relinquished power in countries that were taken by force, marking the end of Korea under Japanese rule
August 22, 1945 - The Soviet Union enters Pyongyang
September 8, 1945 - The United States enters Seoul
1946 - A US–USSR Joint-Commission on the formation of a Korean Government is dissolved
1947 - The United Nations establishes the UN Temporary Commission on Korea
May 10, 1948 - UN sponsored elections are held in South Korea.
August 15, 1948 - The Republic of Korea (South Korea) is established
September 9, 1948 - The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) is established
South Korean history begins with the division of the Korean Peninsula in 1945. A civilian government was established in 1948, beginning the First Republic. Syngman Rhee becomes the first president.
North Korea was proclaimed on September 11 in 1948, under the supervision of the occupying Soviet forces. The Soviets preferred Korean Communists who had spent the war years in the Soviet Union in power, rather than the Communist Party of Korea. Kim Il-sung is named head of the North Korean Provisional People's Committee in February 1946. Kim then became Prime Minister, a post which he held until 1972, before becoming President.
June 25, 1950 - the Korean War begins.
July 1950 - UN Forces are formed. UN Forces are driven back to the Pusan Perimeter
September 1950 - UN Troops make an amphibious Landing at Incheon. UN Forces soon reach the Manchurian border
November 1950 - Chinese forces enter the war and UN Forces are pushed back to the 38th Parallel

A Day in the Korean War Documentary: U.S. Soldiers on the Front Lines
http://thefilmarchive.org/
On 27 September 1950, MacArthur received the top secret National Security Council Memorandum 81/1 from Truman reminding him that operations north of the 38th parallel were authorized only if "at the time of such operation there was no entry into North Korea by major Soviet or Chinese Communist forces, no announcements of intended entry, nor a threat to counter our operations militarily..." On 29 September MacArthur restored the government of the Republic of Korea under Syngman Rhee. On 30 September, Defense Secretary George Marshall sent an eyes-only message to MacArthur: "We want you to feel unhampered tactically and strategically to proceed north of the 38th parallel." During October, the ROK police executed people who were suspected to be sympathetic to North Korea.
On 30 September Zhou Enlai warned the United States that it was prepared to intervene in Korea if the United States crossed the 38th parallel. Zhou attempted to advise North Korean commanders on how to conduct a general withdrawal by using the same tactics which had allowed Chinese communist forces to successfully escape Chiang Kai-shek's Encirclement Campaigns in the 1930s. North Korean commanders did not utilize these tactics effectively.
By 1 October 1950, the UN Command repelled the KPA northwards, past the 38th parallel; the ROK Army crossed after them, into North Korea. MacArthur made a statement demanding the KPA's unconditional surrender. Six days later, on 7 October, with UN authorization, the UN Command forces followed the ROK forces northwards. The X Corps landed at Wonsan (in southeastern North Korea) and Riwon (in northeastern North Korea), already captured by ROK forces. The Eighth United States Army and the ROK Army drove up western Korea and captured Pyongyang city, the North Korean capital, on 19 October 1950. The 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team ("Rakkasans") made their first of the only two combat jumps during the Korean War on 20 October 1950 at Sunchon and Sukchon, North Korea. The missions of the 187th were to cut the road north going to China, preventing North Korean leaders from escaping from Pyongyang; and to rescue American prisoners of war. At month's end, UN forces held 135,000 K
PA prisoners of war.
Taking advantage of the UN Command's strategic momentum against the communists, General MacArthur believed it necessary to extend the Korean War into China to destroy depots supplying the North Korean war effort. President Truman disagreed, and ordered caution at the Sino-Korean border.

The renaissance that was seeded in 1945 began to grow with director Lee Kyu-hwan's successful remake of Chunhyang-jeon in 1955. 1955 also saw the release of Yang san Province (Hangul: 양산도; Yangsan-do) by Kim Ki-young, marking the beginning of a career that would remain productive until his death in 1998.

Spiritual Journey - Rev. Dr. Syngman Rhee
Rev. Dr. Syngman Rhee's death in January 2015 ended a distinguished career but not the legacy of a man born into the trauma of war-torn Korea, who, with tenacity and faith, became the head of the Presbyterian Church-USA, as well as head of the National Council of Churches. While he never lived to see reconciliation in his country, he was part of the civil rights struggle in the US, and returned to Korea, reuniting with his sisters after a separation of more than 40 years.

Hello.
I′m Daniel Choy, here with the latest at this hour.
President Park arrives in Peru for second stop on South America tour
President Park Geun-hye is now in Lima, Peru, the second stop on her South America tour.
Over the next three days, she will seek ways to spur cooperation with Peru that go beyond trade and investment.

PM Lee Wan-koo makes first public appearance since graft scandal arose
Prime Minister Lee Wan-koo made a public appearance on Sunday.
His first, since allegations of his involvement in a graft scandal prompted the main opposition party to demand his resignation.
The prime minister attended a ceremony on Sunday to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the April 19th Revolution.
There, he called for the creation of an atmosphere for achieving a peaceful reunification on the Korean peninsula and upgrading the country′s image by strengthening democracy.
The event was one of many festivities around the nation on Sunday honoring the student democracy activists who led the uprising in 1960 that resulted in President Rhee Syngman′s resignation.

This film is a study of American soldiers helping a nation to rebuild itself.

Cold War Korea 1949 1953
Cold War Korea 1949 1953
After countless talks, eventually an armistice is signed. Communism was contained, but Korea would remain divided. Interviewees include Lucius D. Battle, Paik Sun Yup and John Glenn. The pre-credits scene shows a battle in progress - the first "hot war" of the cold war.

Korea after the Second World War was occupied by both the Soviets and the Americans, who respectively installed Kim Il-sung and Syngman Rhee as leaders.

July 27, 1953 - The Korean Armistice Agreement is signed by UN Forces, North Korea and China, but not by South Korea

Syngman Rhee (Yi Sung-man, 1875-1965) is undoubtably one of the most important figures in modern Korean history. He emerged as the dominant leader in Korea's nationalist struggle against Japan and served as the first president of the Republic of Korea from 1948 through 1960. Rhee's political career as founder and president, however, was not without controversy. While some hailed him as "the George Washington of Korea", others regarded Rhee as "a little Chiang Kai-shek". This first English translation of Rhee's magnum opus, The Spirit of Independence (Tongnip chongsin), provides readers with an essential key to understanding the breadth and depth of Rhee's thought at a critical juncture in his life and his country's history.

With the armistice of 1953, South Korean president Syngman Rhee made an effort to rejuvenate the film industry by exempting it from taxation. The renaissance that was seeded in 1945 began to grow with director Lee Kyu-hwan's successful remake of Chunhyang-jeon in 1955. Within two months, 10% of Seoul's population—over 200,000 people—had seen the movie, giving the film industry further impetus.
1955 also saw the release of Yang san Province (Hangul: 양산도; Yangsan-do) by Kim Ki-young, marking the beginning of a career that would remain productive until his death in 1998.

Korea unveils new lists of victims of colonial Japan
The list of Korean victims were produced through nationwide surveys in 1953 under the direction of then President Syngman Rhee. They were made as Seoul was preparing for bilateral talks with Tokyo that year. One of the books lists 630 victims killed during the independence movement, while another lists 290 Koreans killed during the Great Kanto Earthquake. The rest have names of 229,781 Koreans forced to work under colonial rule.
