LUCKNOW: I am a stepdaughter in my house. If I fail, I will be given stepmotherly treatment. I come from an extremely poor economic background and can't even afford to attach real currency notes to impress you (examiners). Please pass me.
Examiner Saroj Upadhyaya found the last message in one of the home science answer copies of the Uttar Pradesh Board examinations that she was given to evaluate. As she read it out to her fellow examiners, everyone broke into laughter. Her colleague Reena Shar ma couldn't suppress a chuckle after reading what she found in two copies: "My marriage is fixed and the ceremony will be held in June. Since the results will be out before my wedding, I request you to pass me. If I fail, my in-laws will call off the wedding".
Not only requests but teachers also found interesting notes of threats. In a few answer copies real currency notes were attached to lure examiners to dole out additional marks required for passing the examination.
There were also warnings like, "Don't you dare fail me. I will commit suicide, turn into a ghost and come to haunt you".
Amid the highly stressful task, these pleas and threats provide some hilarious moments to teachers evaluating class X and XII answer copies of the UP Board. There are also answer sheets where students put down completely irrelevant things. In an English answer copy, a student has written a nursery rhyme, albeit in his own style.
"Tinkal, tinkal lelistar, awar wonder wat u yar, ab about ward sho hie (sic)," reads the answer.
In another, a student has narrated the hardships faced by his poor family in getting him educated and how failing in the examination will render a deathly blow to his mother. After his father's demise, he is the only breadwinner to feed his mother and 11 sisters, he wrote.
There are a few cases where students have pleaded for marks citing medical reasons. "I was one of the toppers in class X but I am unable to write the exam due to swelling in my hand. Show mercy and award me 30 out of 33 marks in the exam so that I can maintain my 'topper' status," read a note in a physics answer copy .
Teachers are shocked to see the choicest of abuses inscribed in one of the copies. For example, a student has written, " Agar tune mujhe pass kar diya to tu mera jija, aur nahi kiya to mai tera jija (If you pass me, then you will be my brother-in-law, else I will be your brother-in-law)".
