In most games, the Game Master has the final say in both the rules, but also what actually occurred in play. What if they weren't always absolute in their judgement and how would you make that concept a game mechanic?
Good fiction always leaves you with something to discuss, and strong characters often put their own spin on the events they relate. Today's challenge is to tell a short tale in which the reader is supposed to doubt the validity of what the narrator is telling them. NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND by Fyodor Dostoyevsky - FULL AudioBook | GreatestAudioBooks.com - Notes from Underground is an 1864 novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Notes is considered by many to be the first existentialist novel. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man) who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy, especially Nikolay Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done?. The second part of the book is called "Àpropos of the Wet Snow," and describes certain events that, it seems, are destroying and sometimes renewing the underground man, who acts as a first person, unreliable narrator. Modern literature (Audiobook): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL47_m_Ga4AeevoNVp5uZQW7Oe9fek8oqH Featuring soap made from human fat, waiters at high-class restaurants who do unmentionable things to soup and an underground organization dedicated to inflicting a violent anarchy upon the land, Palahniuk’s apocalyptic first novel is clearly not for the faint of heart. The unnamed (and extremely unreliable) narrator, who makes his living investigating accidents for a car company in order to assess their liability, is combating insomnia and a general sense of anomie by attending a steady series of support-group meetings for the grievously ill, at one of which (testicular cancer) he meets a young woman named Marla. She and the narrator get into a love triangle of sorts with Tyler Durden, a mysterious and gleefully destructive young man with whom the narrator starts a fight club, a secret society that offers young professionals the chance to beat one another to a bloody pulp. Learn how to pronounce Narrator This is the *English* pronunciation of the word Narrator. According to Wikipedia, this is one of the possible definitions of the word "Narrator": Narration is the use of—or the particularly chosen methodology or process (also called the narrative mode) of using—a written or spoken commentary to convey a story to an audience. Narration encompasses a set of techniques through which the creator of the story presents their story, including: Narrative point of view: the perspective (or type of personal or non-personal "lens") through which a story is communicated Narrative voice: the format (or type of presentational form) through which a story is communicated Narrative time: the placement of the story's time-frame in the past, the present, or the future A narrator is a personal character or a non-personal voice that the creator of the story develops to deliver information to the audience, particularly about the plot. The narrator may be a voice devised by the author as an anonymous, non-personal, or stand-alone entity; as the author themself as a character; or as some other fictional or non-fictional character appearing and participating within their own story. The narrator is considered participant if he/she is a character within the story, and non-participant if he/she is an implied character or an omniscient or semi-omniscient being or voice that merely relates the story to the audience without being involved in the actual events. Some stories have multiple narrators to illustrate the story-lines of various characters at the same, similar, or different times, thus allowing a more complex, non-singular point of view. Narration encompasses not only who tells the story, but also how the story is told (for example, by using stream of consciousness or unreliable narration). In traditional literary narratives (such as novels, short stories, and memoirs), narration is a required story element; in other types of (chiefly non-literary) narratives, such as plays, television shows, video games, and films, narration is merely optional. Please post comments if you have a different opinion. Transcript of My Interpretation: In relation to the question of whether one prefers to watch a film with or without a voiceover narrator, I feel that this is pretty subjective and there is no right or wrong answer. What I feel interesting is instead the interaction between the voiceover narrator and the camera narration, that is, in specific films, different effects may be achieved depending on the congruence or divergence between what the camera shows and what the narrator says. On the one hand, if what the voiceover narrator says and what the camera narration shows in the scenes of the film are congruent or completely the same, it will contribute to the effect of redundancy and depending on the audience's response, they may feel that the film may be trying to emphasise on specific aspects such as characterisation. For instance, if the camera's narration is seen from the perspective of the character who is also the voiceover narrator, it may be trying to highlight the honest attribute of the character where what he or she says is to a certain degree, reliable. I feel that instances where what the camera shows and what the narrator says are congruent is rare as human subjectivity is unreliable. On the other hand, what is more interesting is when what the camera shows or narrates is divergent from what the voiceover narrator tells the audience. This is closely related to the notion of the unreliable narrator where what the voiceover narrator tells us may not be the truth or reflect the narrator's innocence/duplicity or state of mind but subtle clues may be seen through the camera's visual narration if the audience is attentive to the setting. In Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven, the voiceover narration is provided by Linda who is the younger sister of the main character, Bill. In the beginning of the film, the camera narration shows the audience Bill killing the foreman which causes the narrative event where he and his sisters have to escape. However, the voiceover narration provided by Linda reveals to the audience that she was unaware of what had happened as she tells the audience that they were going places, looking for things, searching for things and going on adventures. This highlights her naivety or innocence and thus the voiceover narration provides another perspective to contrast with the camera narration which perhaps show the narrative from Bill's perspective which highlights the harshness of the real life adult world. I do not see a problem of using language, or the use of a voiceover narrator a problem with cinematic narratives if both of them complement each other and function differently enough to enable the audience to obtain a deeper understanding of the narrative from multiple perspectives. What I find issue with is when the voiceover narrator is overly used in the cinematic narrative. Since the cinematic narrative is a highly visual medium, I feel that the story should be conveyed through more visual means rather than through the language provided by the voiceover narrator. The use of a voiceover narrator throughout the film is rare compared to the camera's visual narration. This is similar to the argument made that a first person camera viewpoint is harder to sustain in the cinematic narrative compared to a first person shooter game as the feature such as the visual quality of a cinematic medium highlight its unique quality. The first way that the cinematic narratives depend on the camera is the use of the camera to focus on the facial expression of the characters. In cinematic narratives, subtle expressions of the actors and actresses can be conveyed because the camera can amplify the acting skills of the performers. The second way is the length of time in which the camera focuses on the close-up of a character. When used in conjunction with music, it can be used to intensify the emotional impact of the scene on the audience when no voiceover narration is used as the audience is allowed to infer the meanings of the visual narration by themselves. This contributes to the multiple interpretations of a specific scene when visual narration is used as no language is used to fix the meaning of the scene shown through the camera visual narration, enabling the audience to figure out the narrative message conveyed by themselves.

"The Black Cat" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. The story is presented as a first-person narrative using an unreliable narrator. He is a condemned man at the outset of the story. The narrator tells us that from an early age he has loved animals. He and his wife have many pets, including a large, beautiful black cat (as described by the narrator) named Pluto. This cat is especially fond of the narrator and vice versa...

Huffington Post 2015-03-17An unreliable narrator is a narrator, whether in literature, film, or theatre, whose credibility has been seriously compromised. The term was coined in 1961 by Wayne C. Booth in The Rhetoric of Fiction. This narrative mode is one that can be developed by an author for a number of reasons, usually to deceive the reader or audience. Unreliable narrators are usually first-person narrators, but third-person narrators can also be unreliable.
The nature of the narrator is sometimes immediately clear. For instance, a story may open with the narrator making a plainly false or delusional claim or admitting to being severely mentally ill, or the story itself may have a frame in which the narrator appears as a character, with clues to his or her unreliability. A more dramatic use of the device delays the revelation until near the story's end. This twist ending forces the reader to reconsider their point of view and experience of the story. In some cases the narrator's unreliability is never fully revealed but only hinted at, leaving the reader to wonder how much the narrator should be trusted and how the story should be interpreted.
