Here we delve a bit into the realm of topology, adding a notion of "closeness" to our sets and seeing how that helps us understand the real numbers.

Topology, sometimes called rubber sheet geometry, is an important and young branch of Maths: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/surfaces-and-topology If we count the number of vertices, v, on a cube, v = 8, number of edges e = 12, and number of faces f = 6, then v¬ -- e + f = 2. The same is true for a tetrahedron where v¬ = 4, e = 6 and f = 4. In fact, the mathematician Leonhard Euler obtained the amazing result that v¬ -- e + f = 2 for a wide class of polyhedrons. This theorem of Euler is a result in topology, a subject which tries to find those properties of geometrical objects that are invariant under continuous deformation -- a tetrahedron can be changed in this way into a cube. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/surfaces-and-topology Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Canberra Times 2015-04-02Topology (from the Greek τόπος, “place”, and λόγος, “study”) is a major area of mathematics concerned with properties that are preserved under continuous deformations of objects, such as deformations that involve stretching, but no tearing or gluing. It emerged through the development of concepts from geometry and set theory, such as space, dimension, and transformation.
Ideas that are now classified as topological were expressed as early as 1736. Toward the end of the 19th century, a distinct discipline developed, which was referred to in Latin as the geometria situs (“geometry of place”) or analysis situs (Greek-Latin for “picking apart of place”). This later acquired the modern name of topology. By the middle of the 20th century, topology had become an important area of study within mathematics.
The word topology is used both for the mathematical discipline and for a family of sets with certain properties that are used to define a topological space, a basic object of topology. Of particular importance are homeomorphisms, which can be defined as continuous functions with a continuous inverse.

U cut my life
Tear it down from both sides
And oh I wish I could be the pain in your head
Only the scream left after you finish dead
Ah these strings
Hurt yet I want to play them
Just for you
But I am falling apart
Crawling the ground
Only misery is found
Truly I don't mind
But every time it feels like I'm falling apart
Like I'm crawling the ground
Want to scream out
I hate to look back

These are the bruises you dealt I've taken every punch Through the years I have tried to abide And leave the chaos behind
Don't hold my hand. Do not come too near...I'll crush your bones indeed Don't hold my hand. Do not come too near ...you'll learn it hurts to bleed
The guilt and anger remained This is what held me down In your shadow for way too long I always thought I was wrong
Don't hold my hand. Do not come too near...I'll crush your bones indeed Don't hold my hand. Do not come too near ...you'll learn it hurts to bleed
The light is green, but you're not moving.
It's a stoplight, after all.
It's not a go light.
It ain't your night.
You need a bug-light, so you can pop and crawl.
Sure I'll share you ugly duckling alcohol.
The surgery's over and you're bouncing back
To spill your guts, friend.
But, hey, not on my pants.
You're not out of luck. You still got half a pack of cigarettes.
It's enemy, lonely, lonely boy.
Why don't you go see a show?
It's a surefire cure.
Pretend the drumbeat is your heart.
Double Joe.
Double Joe.
He ain't afraid of his cymbals.
All those jumping jacks,
They're just heart attacks.
That sugar smacks you every time.
You wanna be anonymous.
You could be like parallel lines.
You want to be untouchable,
Or you can be a hologram.
But home is where you hang out,
Not where you hang yourself.
Life is just a fleeting opportunity
To do a belly-dance on an atomic particle.
Existence is essence and love is just a silly aftertaste.
It's enemy, lonely, lonely, boy.
Why don't you go see a show?
It's a surefire cure.
Pretend the drumbeat is your heart.
Double Joe.
Double Joe.
He ain't afraid of his cymbals.
Double Joe.
