How Does Chromate Conversion Work?
The aluminium part is placed in a dilute acid solution containing hexavalent chromium ions. It reacts with the aluminium oxide to form a protective chromium film, enhancing the part’s corrosion resistance and giving it a golden color.
If a two-stage chromate conversion is required, the part is immersed into a second solution with higher chromium ion concentrations. The resulting coating has a much higher concentration of chromium oxide. Hexavalent-free chromium can be used for a clear chemical conversion coating.

Chromate conversion coating
Chromate conversion coating is a type of conversion coating used to passivate aluminum, zinc, cadmium, copper, silver, magnesium, and tin alloys. It is primarily used as a corrosion inhibitor, primer, decorative finish, or to retain electrical conductivity. The process is named after the chromate found in chromic acid, also known as hexavalent chromium, the chemical most widely used in the immersion bath process whereby the coating is applied. However, hexavalent chromium is toxic, thus, highly regulated, so new, non-hexavalent chromium-based processes are becoming more readily available at a commercial level. One alternative contains trivalent chromium. The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive is commonly referred to regarding elimination of hexavalent chromium.

Proto Tech Tip - Chemical Conversion Coating VS Passivation
Every week, Team Protocase is bringing you a Proto Tech Tip video, where we'll give an informative look at a particular aspect of sheet metal fabrication and CNC Machining.
This week, Chris gives a rundown of the differences between using Chemical Conversion Coating and Passivation for improving corrosion resistance in sheet metal parts. Chemical conversion coating is also referred to as chem film, chromate coating, or yellow chromate coating. This process is strictly for aluminum, and creates a surface that’s corrosion-resistant, durable, and exhibits stable electrical conductivity. Passivation is used for treating stainless steel exclusively. Similar to chem film, passivation is a process in which your part is placed into several liquid baths in order to apply a surface film that reduce...
