This is a rough cut of an unfinished doc I produced in 1971 featuring the famous Ballets Russes choreographer.
I met Massine in 1970 when I asked him to be a patron of my attempt to mount a production of Erik Satie's surrealist ballet Relache (whose Entr'acte, a film by Rene Clair, I had accompanied at the NFT as a silent film pianist). He invited me to his island in the Gulf of Salerno that summer. There we hatched the idea of a series of video-cassettes (at that stage a vapour-ware medium!) which would contain his 'late thoughts' as a choreographer. I came back to the UK fired up with the idea.
During the next 6 months the project coalesced into making a documentary re-establishing Massine's position in the public mind. With a great more enthusiasm than realism I begged and borrowed the £1800 I needed to shoot the footage & returned the following summer with the legendary tv director Rudolph Cartier, with whom I had distilled a script from Massine's a/b; and the cameraman Norman Yardy.
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, Massine & Rudy did not hit it off - in spades! And after a couple of shots Massine (if you spot where hes furious you'll guess the shooting sequence) wouldnt allow Rudy anywhere near the filming. Which was pretty awkward on a small island. I had planned to do sound but had to direct it all as well.
There was a cherchez la femme element to this - as Massine, then 78 had 2 children of 4 & 6 with his german secretary. Normally she was kept in Wiesbaden, but was allowed to come to Li Galli for the summer. She & Massine could only converse in english. Her mother came too, who had no english, and thus M's exchanges with the old lady were limited to courteous gestures.
It was Massine's habit to invite dancers from the Royal Ballet School, of which he was a patron, and one of these had already caught his eye. I think he was fearful that Rudy Cartier, who was 8/9 years younger would get there first. The supreme irony was that she was already sleeping with me, which he must have known, but didn't seem to mind at all. Strange how the mind works.

Massine was his own worst enemy in a uniquely Russian way - as his career showed! Anyway I came home with some reasonable footage -- but that was where my education in the facts of life really began.

(I was blinded by the success of my supporter Chris Nupen, an ex-BBC producer, the first person to succeed as an independent tx2 his relationships with Dupré/Barenboim & John Williams.) And the brutal truth was you either had a deal with the BBC or LWT Aquarius - or you didnt have a film. There was no C4.
At the BBCtv I was stuffed by John Drummond, then i/c Music programming, who I came to realise was only interested in buying my film in order to cannibalise it into an unfinished Massine film of his own. And as soon as I offered it to Aquarius, Humphrey Burton responded in his inimitable way that he had already(!) had the idea of a Massine film & so didn't want mine. I knew his project would come to nothing because Massine became impossible the moment he scented money. I won his trust simply because, I think, he could see that I had none.
This was as much film as I managed to edit. At the end of this sequence it should have cut to footage of Massine dancing El Amor Brujo (from the film Spanish Holiday by Powell /Pressburger) but without funding we could go no further.
Some time later I presented the negative to the National Film Archive, where it remains.
When we were there filming, age 24, I had a premonition that I wouldnt manage to finish the film, but would return to Li Galli when I was Massine's age (78) to round off the film in the context of the story of my life. Which gives me another 15 years!
There was a sequel to the story I told in pt1. La femme in question did go to NY with Massine. Slightly bizarrely she asked me to go too. But I couldnt, producing the film had cleaned me out, and at that stage I believed I could sell it. I had the support of Chris Nupen & had not yet had my face rubbed in the grim facts of life in that era of the tv duopoly.

Léonide Massine
Leonid Fyodorovich Myasin (Russian: Леони́д Фёдорович Мя́син), better known in the West by the French transliteration as Léonide Massine (9 August [O.S. 28 July] 1896 – 15 March 1979), was a Russian choreographer and ballet dancer. Massine created the world's first symphonic ballet, Les Présages, and many others in the same vein. Besides his "symphonic ballets," Massine choreographed many other popular works during his long career, some of which were serious and dramatic, and others lighthearted and romantic. He created some of his most famous roles in his own comic works, among them the Can-Can Dancer in La Boutique fantasque (1919), the Hussar in Le Beau Danube (1924), and, perhaps best known of all, the Peruvian in Gaîté Parisienne (1938).

Léonide Massine was born in Moscow and was a ballet student at the Imperial Theater School in that city.

From 1915 to 1921 he was the principal choreographer of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.

This is a rough cut of an unfinished doc I produced in 1971 featuring the famous Ballets Russes choreographer. I met Massine in 1970 when I asked him to be a patron of my attempt to mount a production of Erik Satie's surrealist ballet Relache (whose Entr'acte, a film by Rene Clair, I had accompanied at the NFT as a silent film pianist). He invited me to his island in the Gulf of Salerno that summer. And after a couple of shots Massine (if you spot where hes furious you'll guess the shooting sequence) wouldnt allow Rudy anywhere near the filming. Which was pretty awkward on a small island. I had planned to do sound but had to direct it all as well. There was a cherchez la femme element to this - as Massine, then 78 had 2 children of 4 & 6 with his german secretary. Normally she was kept in Wiesbaden, but was allowed to come to Li Galli for the summer. She & Massine could only converse in english. Her mother came too, who had no english, and thus M's exchanges with the old lady were limited to courteous gestures. It was Massine's habit to invite dancers from the Royal Ballet School, of which he was a patron, and one of these had already caught his eye. I think he was fearful that Rudy Cartier, who was 8/9 years younger would get there first. Massine was his own worst enemy in a uniquely Russian way - as his career showed! Anyway I came home with some reasonable footage -- but that was where my education in the facts of life really began.
In 1971 there was NO independent market for arts film. (I was blinded by the success of my supporter Chris Nupen, an ex-BBC producer, the first person to succeed as an independent tx2 his relationships with Dupré/Barenboim & John Williams.) And the brutal truth was you either had a deal with the BBC or LWT Aquarius - or you didnt have a film. There was no C4.
At the BBCtv I was stuffed by John Drummond, then i/c Music programming, who I came to realise was only interested in buying my film in order to cannibalise it into an unfinished Massine film of his own. And as soon as I offered it to Aquarius, Humphrey Burton responded in his inimitable way that he had already(!) had the idea of a Massine film & so didn't want mine. I knew his project would come to nothing because Massine became impossible the moment he scented money. I won his trust simply because, I think, he could see that I had none.
This was as much film as I managed to edit. At the end of this sequence it should have cut to footage of Massine dancing El Amor Brujo (from the film Spanish Holiday by Powell /Pressburger) but without funding we could go no further.
Some time later I presented the negative to the National Film Archive, where it remains.
When we were there filming, age 24, I had a premonition that I wouldnt manage to finish the film, but would return to Li Galli when I was Massine's age (78) to round off the film in the context of the story of my life. Which gives me another 15 years!
There was a sequel to the story I told in pt1. La femme in question did go to NY with Massine. Slightly bizarrely she asked me to go too. But I couldnt, producing the film had cleaned me out, and at that stage I believed I could sell it. I had the support of Chris Nupen & had not yet had my face rubbed in the grim facts of life in that era of the tv duopoly.

The first three-quarters of this video represent an interview with Ruth Page by Ken Nordine, a voice-over and recording artist based in Chicago, IL. The interview was recorded for television in Chicago in 1957. The name of the program is unknown. The final sixteen minutes of this video are a copy of a 1938 performance of "Frankie and Johnny," a ballet choreographed by Ruth Page and Bentley Stone. It is a one-act ballet (divided into seven dances), based on the popular 1899 American ballad about Frankie, a prostitute in 1890s Chicago, and her pimp Johnny. The final sixteen minutes of this video are a copy of a 1938 performance of "Frankie and Johnny," a ballet choreographed by Ruth Page and Bentley Stone. It is a one-act ballet (divided into seven dances), based on the popular 1899 American ballad about Frankie, a prostitute in 1890s Chicago, and her pimp Johnny. Page and Stone choreographed it in 1938 for the Works Project Administration Federal Dance Project, with music by Jerome Moross, libretto by Michael Blandford & Jerome Moross, and scenery and costumes by Paul Du Pont. The ballet was premiered at Chicago's Great Northern Theatre on June 19, 1938, performed by Page and Stone as the "Federal Ballet;" it ran for an unprecedented six weeks. The copy in this video appears to represent a dress rehearsal from around that time, originally recorded on 16mm film.

Rossiniana, P. 148, is a 1925 orchestral suite by Ottorino Respighi, based on four piano pieces by Gioachino Rossini.
Respighi had written the ballet La Boutique fantasque for Léonide Massine in 1919, basing it on short piano pieces from Rossini's collection Péchés de vieillesse (Sins of Old Age). In 1925, he returned to Rossini's music, but not as a ballet, simply as concert music. He again used Sins of Old Age, specifically Quelques riens (Various nothings) from Volume XII, and applied what he called a trascrizione libera (free transcription) to them. [...] The scoring is brilliant, but also dark and evocative. Although not written for ballet, Rossiniana is eminently suitable for use in ballet.

After a mixed critical reception for its original run and a short London tour, the ballet was not performed again until the 1920s, when a version choreographed by Léonide Massine replaced Nijinsky's original. Massine's was the forerunner of many innovative productions directed by the world's leading ballet-masters, which gained the work worldwide acceptance. In the 1980s, Nijinsky's original choreography, long believed lost, was reconstructed by the Joffrey Ballet in Los Angeles.
Stravinsky's score contains many novel features for its time, including experiments in tonality, metre, rhythm, stress and dissonance. Analysts have noted in the score a significant grounding in Russian folk music, a relationship Stravinsky tended to deny. El sombrero de tres picos es un ballet del compositor español Manuel de Falla y coreografía de Léonide Massine basado en la novela homónima del escritor decimonónico Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. Se estrenó el 22 de julio de 1919 en el Alhambra Theatre de Londres bajo la batuta de Ernest Ansermet y decorados y figurines de Pablo Picasso.
En la historia de la danza teatral del siglo XX, El sombrero de tres picos de Pedro Antonio de Alarcón puede reclamar un lugar tan significativo como el de la Petrushka de Ígor Stravinski[cita requerida]. Ambas obras fueron producidas por el gran empresario Serguéi Diáguilev y representadas por sus Ballets Rusos. Las dos rompen con las primitivas tradiciones temáticas que poblaban el género de princesas, apariciones y cisnes. Pero todavía más importante, quizás, es su visión de la burguesía con una cierta simpatía. En este sentido, en El sombrero de tres picos se reflejan las actitudes y aspiraciones de la Andalucía rural.
Tras su estreno en Londres, la obra tuvo un rotundo éxito, elogiándose la acertada síntesis de música, baile, drama y decorado.
Una primera versión de la obra, llamada El corregidor y la molinera, fue representada en 1917 en el Teatro Eslava de Madrid en forma de pantomima en dos partes. Más tarde, Diáguilev conoció a Falla y lo convenció de la necesidad de retocar la obra con la intención de dotarla de mayor estructura teatral; el autor modificó su obra para adaptarla al género de la danza, eliminando gran parte de los elementos descriptivos (incluso irónicos) y expandiendo las partes bailables.
El ballet está basado en un cuento folclórico que comparte el espíritu de Beaumarchais, su brío y su profundo respeto por los recursos y el espíritu del segundo estrato de la sociedad.
Tras el estreno del ballet, Falla compuso dos suites orquestales con el mismo título, la n.º 1 y la n.º 2, que se suelen representar más que el propio ballet. En ellas, retiró algunos fragmentos vocales y de transición que contenía la obra original.
