The primary role of compliance managers are to make sure that the organization they work for is in full compliance with any regulations or laws that apply to the type of business he or she works for. They often work in heavily regulated industries such as healthcare, financial services, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

There are many reasons as to why their role is important; non-compliance can lead to a loss customer and investor confidence in the company's ability to run properly, or it may even lead to financial penalties.

Primarily, there are two types of regulations that compliance managers are responsible for ensuring that the company is in compliance with: general regulations that could apply to virtually any type of business, and regulations that are specific to particular sectors such as the media, financial services, or manufacturing.

Examples of general regulations include of employment legislation, data protection, consumer protection and health and safety; whereas a regulation specific to the media industry could include of film copyright regulations.

Responsibilities & Skills

To ensure compliance, managers create policies and procedures for all business operations where regulations are applicable. Moreover, they are responsible for distributing the information both to employees and other managers.

When it comes to enforcing the policies and procedures, compliance managers must perform reviews and audits in order to ensure that employees are abiding by the policies. With all of the responsibilities, it is critical for compliance managers to have these required skills:

- Able to effectively enforce company policies, values and procedures.
- Capable of developing various compliance organizational strategies by contributing recommendations, analysis and other relevant information.
- Knowledgeable about and able to implement compliance financial strategies by anticipating requirements and trends.
