OK. How do I not try something made with hop OIL? O. I. L. Holy mother this is an intense hop experience!! It's hard to get any multi sweetness out of this brew. It burns away in the hop astringency of the finish. Hop lovers, this beer was made for you. 6.2% ABV. Label says 60 IBUs which, to me, means hop bitterness doesn't drive IBUs. If that's the case, what does "International Bittering Units" mean? It's a measurement of alpha acids in beer - which get there from the addition of hops. A more subjective scale, but rating beer on its perceived bitterness is the European Bitterness Units (EBU) which might better guide buyers on beers they would enjoy. Salvatore A. LoCascio, Composer Kolbeinn Tumason, Author PLEASE NOTE: I do not speak Icelandic and am well aware I suck at the language, horribly. I tried to follow IPA but....yeah. English Translation (taken from Wikipedia) Hear, smith of the heavens, what the poet asks. May softly come unto me thy mercy. So I call on thee, for thou hast created me. I am thy slave, thou art my Lord. God, I call on thee to heal me. Remember me, mild one,[1] Most we need thee. Drive out, O king of suns, generous and great, human every sorrow from the city of the heart. Watch over me, mild one, Most we need thee, truly every moment in the world of men. send us, son of the virgin, good causes, all aid is from thee, in my heart. Historically, Iceland's approach to theology is quirky when compared to continental Europe. Iceland was one of the last countries to covert to Christianity, adopting it as an “official” religion around the 11th century. Before this, like most Scandinavian cultures, Iceland worshiped the Norse Gods. Because of their comparatively young conversion to Christianity, Icelandic Theology often incorporated elements of their previous beliefs, creating a unique, quirky interperation of Theology somewhat akin to practices found in Central America. Heyr, Himnasmiður is the title of a hymn by Icelandic author Kolbeinn Tumason. The text was written sometime during the late 12th century and is frequently associated with funerals. Given the small amount of people who speak Icelandic, paired with the small size of Iceland, the Icelandic language has evolved slower than other European languages. Icelanders are capable of understanding original Norse Myths as they were originally documented. This text, as old as it seems to an English speaker, is still easily understood. The text gives subtle nods to Iceland's norse tradition, using terms like “Heavensmith” to describe God or “the whole ground” to refer to the realm of men. Because of this emotional property, the work incorporates chant, generally shies away from tertian chords (a development in music much later than the date of this poem) and plays with the emotional context behind smaller intervals (a technique explored and perfected during the development of chant.) The score is for sale and available at my website: www.salvatorelocascio.com

THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC - FULL AudioBook | GreatestAudioBooks.com - Joan of Arc (French: Jeanne d'Arc, IPA: [c. 1412 – 30 May 1431), nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans" (French: La Pucelle d'Orléans), is considered a heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. She was born to Jacques d'Arc and Isabelle, a peasant family, at Domrémy in north-east France. Joan said she received visions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine instructing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent Joan to the siege of Orléans as part of a relief mission. She gained prominence after the siege was lifted in only nine days. Several additional swift victories led to Charles VII's coronation at Reims. This long-awaited event boosted French morale and paved the way for the final French victory. On 23 May 1430 she was captured at Compiègne by the Burgundian faction which was allied with the English. She was later handed over to the English, and then put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais Pierre Cauchon on a variety of charges. After Cauchon declared her guilty she was burned at the stake on 30 May 1431, dying at about nineteen years of age. Twenty-five years after her execution, an inquisitorial court authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, debunked the charges against her, pronounced her innocent, and declared her a martyr. Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920. She is one of the nine secondary patron saints of France, along with St. Denis, St. Martin of Tours, St. Louis, St. Michael, St. Remi, St. Petronilla, St. Radegund and St. Thérèse of Lisieux. In English, it is often shortened to M.O. The expression is often used in police work when discussing a crime and addressing the methods employed by the perpetrators. It is also used in criminal profiling,[2] where it can help in finding clues to the offender's psychology.[3] It largely consists of examining the actions used by the individual(s) to execute the crime, prevent its detection and/or facilitate escape.[1] A suspect's modus operandi can assist in his identification, apprehension, or repression, and can also be used to determine links between crimes.[4] In business, modus operandi is used to describe a firm's preferred means of doing business and interacting with other firms. mo·di operandi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modus_operandi http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/modus%20operandi
Five extinct languages spoken, including Ubykh, Old English, Proto-Germanic, Proto-Indo-European, and Proto-Nostratic. Some more information on the languages (from Wikipedia): Ubykh, tʷaxəbza in the Ubykh language, is an extinct Northwest Caucasian language that died with its last native speaker, Tevfik Esenç, in 1992. It has the largest consonant inventory among attested non-click languages, with 84 phonemic consonants (but only two phonemic vowels). Old English, Ænglisc in Old English, is the direct ancestor of the modern English language, although very different due to its lack of Romance influence from the Normans, and because of this is much closer to Icelandic or German. It was spoken from the mid fifth to mid twelfth centuries. Proto-Germanic is the unattested common ancestor of all the Germanic languages and is a descendant language of Proto-Indo-European, likely spoken in present-day Denmark, and southern Scandinavia about three thousand years ago.. However, certain inscriptions found may be of the early Proto-Norse or late Proto-Germanic periods. Proto-Indo-European is the unattested, yet highly supported common ancestor of all Indo-European languages, including Hellenic (including Greek), Italic (including Latin and the Romance languages), Germanic, Celtic, Slavic, and the Indo-Iranian languages. There are about 439 Indo-European languages, with almost three billion native speakers, by far the most of any widely recognized language family. The most accepted hypothesis places it spoken in the Pontic steppe, about six thousand years ago, although estimates vary greatly. Proto-Nostratic is a controversial common ancestor of Afro-Asiatic, Kartvelian, Dravidian, Eurasiatic (including Uralic, Indo-European, and Altaic), sometimes including Elamite, Sumerian, Nivkh, Yukaghir, Chukotko-Chamkatkan, and Eskimo-Aleut languages. It is believed to be spoken in the Fertile Crescent around 12,000 years ago. Texts Used: Ubykh: from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubykh_language#Samples_of_Ubykh Old English: The Lord's Prayer, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Lord%27s_Prayer_in_English Proto-Germanic: Schleicher's Fable, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proto-Germanic_language#Schleicher.27s_PIE_fable_rendered_into_Proto-Germanic Proto-Indo-European: Schleicher's Fable, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schleicher%27s_fable (Byrd's translation) Proto-Nostratic: from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nostratic_languages#Sample_text Information on the phonetics of the languages come from their respective Wikipedia pages. Stuff used: Recorded on an iPhone 4s, audio edited in Logic Pro 9, pictures made in Gimp, video made in iMovie. **DISCLAIMER** All of these languages are extinct. As such, all pronunciations are completely approximate, especially that of PIE and Proto-Nostratic. I'm not very good at the voiced aspirated (breathy-voiced) PIE stops either, and am unsure about stress patterns, and Old English vowel reduction. Also, I am not perfect. I made quite a few mistakes - see if you can spot them! Hopefully my American English accent didn't get in the way to much. Anyways, thanks for watching! Maybe in the future I'll do another... I'd like to do Latin, Ancient Greek, maybe Old Chinese. I'd need some good texts with IPA pronunciations though. If you want, suggest a language in the comments! I can't imagine how anyone could speak fluent Ubykh. They must have very tough uvulas... (Luckily the Ubykh text didn't use qˁʼ)

I (Karina) interview Joan of Arc (Maria) with bloopers (:
In her new book, acclaimed historian and BBC broadcaster Helen Castor, author of She-Wolves, brings us afresh a gripping life of Joan of Arc. Instead of the icon, she gives us a living, breathing young woman; a roaring girl fighting the English, and taking sides in a bloody civil war that was tearing fifteenth century France apart. In this interview she describes how she came to write the book, and what it was like to de-mythologise the great icon. The book is a portrait of a 19-year-old peasant who hears voices from God; a teenager transformed into a warrior leading an army to victory, in an age that believed women should not fight. And it is also the story behind the myth we all know, a myth which began to take hold at her trial: that of the Maid of Orleans, the saviour of France, a young woman burned at the stake as a heretic, a woman who five hundred years later would be declared a saint. Joan and her world are brought vividly to life in this refreshing new take on the medieval world.

Music under permission of I.M.M. Musicworks Beautiful and unforgettable version of AUM MANI PADME HUM sung by Imee Ooi, singer and composer born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which has released more than 40 albums. Excerpt from Wikipedia "Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ[1] (Sanskrit: ॐ मणिपद्मे हूं, IPA: [õːː məɳipəd̪meː ɦũː]) is the six-syllabled Sanskrit mantra particularly associated with the four-armed Shadakshari form of Avalokiteshvara (Tibetan Chenrezig, Chinese Guanyin), the bodhisattva of compassion. Mani means "jewel" or "bead" and Padma means "the lotus flower", the Buddhist Sacred Flower. It is commonly carved onto rocks or written on paper which is inserted into prayer wheels. When an individual spins the wheel, it is said that the effect is the same as reciting the mantra as many times as it is duplicated within the wheel. The first known description of the mantra appears in the Karandavyuha Sutra (Chinese: 佛說大乘莊嚴寶王經 (Taisho Tripitaka 1050);[3] English: Buddha speaks Mahayana Sublime Treasure King Sutra), which is part of certain Mahayana canons such as the Tibetan. In this sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha states, "This is the most beneficial mantra. Even I made this aspiration to all the million Buddhas and subsequently received this teaching from Buddha Amitabha."[4] The middle part of the mantra, maṇipadme, is often interpreted as "jewel in the lotus," Sanskrit maṇí "jewel, gem, cintamani" and the locative of padma "lotus", but according to Donald Lopez it is much more likely that maṇipadme is in fact a vocative, not a locative, addressing a bodhisattva called maṇipadma, "Jewel-Lotus"- an alternate epithet of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.[5] It is preceded by the oṃ syllable and followed by the hūṃ syllable, both interjections without linguistic meaning. Another suggested translation is thus: Om purifies bliss and pride (realm of the gods); Ma purifies jealousy and need for entertainment (realm of the jealous gods); Ni purifies passion and desire (human realm); Pad purifies ignorance and prejudice (animal realm); Me purifies greed and possessiveness (realm of the hungry ghosts); Hum purifies aggression and hatred (hell realm). Pavel Palazhchenko or Palazchenko (Russian: Па́вел Русла́нович Пала́жченко, born 17 March 1949) is a high-level Soviet conference interpreter who was the chief English interpreter for Mikhail Gorbachev and Soviet foreign minister Eduard Shevardnadze from 1985 and 1991. Palazhchenko was born on 17 March 1949 in Monino, Moscow Oblast, Russia. He graduated from the Maurice Thorez Moscow Institute of Foreign Languages (Moscow State Linguistic University) in 1972. As one of the leading interpreters of his time, Palazhchenko participated in all US-Soviet summit talks leading to the end of the Cold War. He is the author of a personal and political memoir, My Years with Gorbachev and Shevardnadze: The Memoir of a Soviet Interpreter. Palazhchenko also wrote the Moi Nesistematichesky Slovar or My Unsystematic Dictionary which was published in Russia by R. Valent publications in May 2002. The 300-page Russian-English dictionary provides information, insight and cultural observation on the linguistic twists and turns that lie between the English and Russian languages; and was a sequel to Palazhchenko’s other work: the English-Russian dictionary published in 1999. The 1999 English-Russian dictionary dealt with trends in the political, diplomatic and journalistic usage in the English language.[4][5] Palazhchenko loves his trade. In his book, My Unsystematic Dictionary, Palazhchenko writes: This very occupation, to imbibe the air of a foreign (and your own) language, to rake through the throng of words and, having found the right one, feel its texture, its size and then grope for the threads connecting the two languages, has always been my favorite thing to do… – from “Book Tackles Those Hard Words”, The Moscow Times, June 3, 2002.[4] In 2005, the third book of this series, Unsystematic Dictionary-2005 was published. After becoming a long-time associate and aide to Mikhail Gorbachev for several years, Palazhchenko eventually became the head of the International Department of the International Non-governmental Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies (or The Gorbachev Foundation), where he also functioned as an analyst, spokesperson, interpreter and translator. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavel_Palazhchenko Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (Russian: Михаи́л Серге́евич Горбачёв, tr. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachyov; IPA: [mʲɪxɐˈil sʲɪrˈɡʲejɪvʲɪt͡ɕ ɡərbɐˈt͡ɕɵf] ( listen); born 2 March 1931) is a former Soviet statesman. He was the eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union, having served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, and as the country's head of state from 1988 until its dissolution in 1991 (titled as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1988 to 1989, as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 1989 to 1990, and as President of the Soviet Union from 1990 to 1991). He was the only general secretary in the history of the Soviet Union to have been born after the October Revolution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Gorbachev Eduard Shevardnadze (Georgian: ედუარდ შევარდნაძე, Georgian pronunciation: [ɛduard ʃɛvardnad͡zɛ]; Russian: Эдуа́рд Амвро́сиевич Шевардна́дзе, tr. Eduard Amvrosiyevich Shevardnadze; 25 January 1928 – 7 July 2014) was a Georgian politician and diplomat. He served as First Secretary of the Georgian Communist Party (GPC), the de facto leader of Soviet Georgia from 1972 to 1985 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991. Shevardnadze was responsible for many key decisions in Soviet foreign policy during the Gorbachev Era. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he was President of Georgia (or in equivalent posts) from 1992 to 2003. He was forced to retire in 2003 as a consequence of the bloodless Rose Revolution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_Shevardnadze

Penn Live 2015-04-08Joan of Arc, nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans" (French: Jeanne d'Arc,IPA: [ʒan daʁk]; ca. 1412 – 30 May 1431), is a folk heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. A peasant girl born in what is now eastern France who claimed divine guidance, she led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War, which paved the way for the coronation of Charles VII of France. She was captured by the Burgundians, transferred to the English in exchange for money, put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais Pierre Cauchon for charges of "insubordination and heterodoxy," and was burned at the stake for heresy when she was only 19 years old.
Twenty-five years after her execution, an inquisitorial court authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, pronounced her innocent, and declared her a martyr. Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920. She is – along with St. Denis, St. Martin of Tours, St. Louis IX, and St. Theresa of Lisieux – one of the patron saints of France. Joan said that she had visions from God that instructed her to recover her homeland from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent her to the siege of Orléans as part of a relief mission. She gained prominence when she overcame the dismissive attitude of veteran commanders and lifted the siege in only nine days. Several additional swift victories led to Charles VII's coronation at Reims and settled the disputed succession to the throne.
