There are the almshouses built in 1852 by the Metropolitan Beer and Wine Trade Society, whose “yellow-brick gothic front of some character” and “oddly angled chimneys” were for Pevsner Nunhead Green’s only redeeming feature. The new building – brick, gabled – has something in common with all of these ... A pattern of herringbone bricks borrowed from the pub, but blown up in scale and realised in bas-relief, enliven one wall....

If only the jailbirds of a century ago could see unit 12 at 28 Seaverns Ave. now. The condo-conversion in Jamaica Plain — which still retains its black metal jail door — is handsome luxury compared to its old days as a police station. Built in the late 1800s, the red brick Gothic-revival-style building retains much of its 19th century architecture ... Exposed brick occupies much of the walls and oak wood the bottom floor ... ....
