The Canadian Flag flying in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. I couldn't help but stop and admire it as it flew in front of its mountain backdrop.
Historically speaking, it is a newer flag, with it being officially flown for the first time on February 15, 1965. It replaced the Canadian Red Ensign, which had been used unofficially since the 1890's, and officially beginning in 1945.
Red and white had been the official colours of Canada since the 1920's and were adopted for the colours of the flag. Although the maple leaf wasn't an official symbol for the country at the time, it had traditionally been used as a Canadian symbol dating back as far as 1860. It represents the nature and environment of the country Canadians call home.

Red mixture:
6 packs red jello (Cherry, strawberry or raspberry)
2 envelopes unflavoured gelatin
6 cups boiling water
Blend together and stir until gelatin dissolved.
White layer:
1/2 cold water
**3 envelopes unflavoured gelatin ( 1/4 oz each)**
NOTE: The recipe in the video only mentions 2 packages of gelatin for this white mixture. I recommend using three as I found the white layer to be more delicate and broke easily.
1 1/2 cup boiling water
1 can sweetened condensed milk (10z or 300ml)
Combine 1/2 cup cold water with two envelopes gelatin.
Stir and allow to sit for 2 minutes.
Add 1/2 cup boiling water and stir until gelatin is dissolved.
Set aside
Combine the sweetened condensed milk with 1 cup boiling water and stir until combined. Add in the first gelatin mixture to the milk mixture and stir.
Pour 4 cups of the red mixture into the bottom of a very very lightly greased 9x13" pan.
Allow to set completely, this will take 40 minutes or so.
Now you need to cut out two strips of red jello out of the pan. The strips on the edges of the pan should be half the size as the strip in the center.
This will depend on how big your leaf cookie cutter is.
Mine had about 1.5" of red on each edge (left and right) and about 3.5 inches for the center stripe. The "empty" places between the stripes were about 4" wide. (this may or may not add up to 13" inches of length, I kind of eyeballed this when I made it).
Fill the empty spaces with the white mixture. You may or may not use it all. I used it all and it pooled over the red layers, but that is okay as the "nice" side of the flags are on the bottom anyway.
Allow to set completely in the fridge and then using greased cookie cutters, cut out three maple leaf shapes in the white portion.
The number of flags you get will depend on the size of your cookie cutters.
Remove the shape and fill the space left behind with red mixture.
Allow to set for at least an hour before slicing into flags. Gently remove and place on plates to serve.
**As far as I know this is my original creation as I have been unable to find anything like it on the interwebs.

The National Flag of Canada, also known as the Maple Leaf, and l'Unifolié (French for "the one-leafed"), is a red flag with a white square in its centre, featuring a stylized 11-pointed red maple leaf. Its adoption in 1965 marked the first time a national flag had been officially adopted in Canada to replace the Union Flag. The Canadian Red Ensign had been unofficially used since the 1890s and was approved by a 1945 Order in Council for use "wherever place or occasion may make it desirable to fly a distinctive Canadian flag".
In 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson appointed a committee to resolve the issue, sparking a serious debate about a flag change. Out of three choices, the maple leaf design by George F. G. Stanley and John Matheson based on the flag of the Royal Military College of Canada was selected. The flag made its first appearance on February 15, 1965; the date is now celebrated annually as National Flag of Canada Day.
Many different flags have been created for use by Canadian officials, government bodies, and military forces. Most of these flags contain the maple leaf motif in some fashion, either by having the Canadian flag charged in the canton, or by including maple leaves in the design. The Royal Union Flag is also an official flag in Canada, used as a symbol of Canada's membership in the Commonwealth of Nations, and of its allegiance to the Crown. The Union Flag remains a component of other Canadian flags, including the provincial flags of British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario.

The Canadian Flag flying in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. I couldn't help but stop and admire it as it flew in front of its mountain backdrop.
Historically speaking, it is a newer flag, with it being officially flown for the first time on February 15, 1965. It replaced the Canadian Red Ensign, which had been used unofficially since the 1890's, and officially beginning in 1945.
Red and white had been the official colours of Canada since the 1920's and were adopted for the colours of the flag. Although the maple leaf wasn't an official symbol for the country at the time, it had traditionally been used as a Canadian symbol dating back as far as 1860. It represents the nature and environment of the country Canadians call home.

Red mixture:
6 packs red jello (Cherry, strawberry or raspberry)
2 envelopes unflavoured gelatin
6 cups boiling water
Blend together and stir until gelatin dissolved.
White layer:
1/2 cold water
**3 envelopes unflavoured gelatin ( 1/4 oz each)**
NOTE: The recipe in the video only mentions 2 packages of gelatin for this white mixture. I recommend using three as I found the white layer to be more delicate and broke easily.
1 1/2 cup boiling water
1 can sweetened condensed milk (10z or 300ml)
Combine 1/2 cup cold water with two envelopes gelatin.
Stir and allow to sit for 2 minutes.
Add 1/2 cup boiling water and stir until gelatin is dissolved.
Set aside
Combine the sweetened condensed milk with 1 cup boiling water and stir until combined. Add in the first gelatin mixture to the milk mixture and stir.
Pour 4 cups of the red mixture into the bottom of a very very lightly greased 9x13" pan.
Allow to set completely, this will take 40 minutes or so.
Now you need to cut out two strips of red jello out of the pan. The strips on the edges of the pan should be half the size as the strip in the center.
This will depend on how big your leaf cookie cutter is.
Mine had about 1.5" of red on each edge (left and right) and about 3.5 inches for the center stripe. The "empty" places between the stripes were about 4" wide. (this may or may not add up to 13" inches of length, I kind of eyeballed this when I made it).
Fill the empty spaces with the white mixture. You may or may not use it all. I used it all and it pooled over the red layers, but that is okay as the "nice" side of the flags are on the bottom anyway.
Allow to set completely in the fridge and then using greased cookie cutters, cut out three maple leaf shapes in the white portion.
The number of flags you get will depend on the size of your cookie cutters.
Remove the shape and fill the space left behind with red mixture.
Allow to set for at least an hour before slicing into flags. Gently remove and place on plates to serve.
**As far as I know this is my original creation as I have been unable to find anything like it on the interwebs.

The Canadian Red Ensign, bearing the Union Jack and the shield of the royal arms of Canada, was lowered and then, on the stroke of noon, our new maple leaf flag was raised. The crowd sang the national anthem O Canada followed by the royal anthem God Save the Queen.
The following words, spoken on that momentous day by the Honourable Maurice Bourget, Speaker of the Senate, added further symbolic meaning to our flag: ""The flag is the symbol of the nation's unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion.""
