In which John Green teaches you about European Imperialism in the 19th century. European powers started to create colonial empires way back in the 16th century, but businesses really took off in the 19th century, especially in Asia and Africa. During the 1800s, European powers carved out spheres of influence in China, India, and pretty much all of Africa. While all of the major (and some minor) powers in Europe participated in this new imperialism, England was by far the most dominant, once able to claim that the "sun never set on the British Empire." Also, they went to war for the right to continue to sell opium to the people of China. Twice. John will teach you how these empires managed to leverage the advances of the Industrial Revolution to build vast, wealth-generating empires. As it turns out, improved medicine, steam engines, and better guns were crucial in the 19th century conquests. Also, the willingness to exploit and abuse the people and resources of so-called "primitive" nations was very helpful in the whole enterprise. Joshua Blakeney interviewed writer and philosopher Eugène Montsalvat on February 26, 2015. Blakeney was prompted to contact Eugène after stumbling across his thought-provoking article "The Necessity of Anti-Colonialism" on the website of Counter-Currents Publishing. One of the attractive features of most members of the New Right is their toleration for conflicting viewpoints within their movement. This is something that is increasingly foreign to the increasingly censorious Left who have assumed the role of enforcers of political correctness on behalf of those in power. As a relatively new student of New Right thought, it struck Blakeney that one of the chief issues upon which there exists a plurality of viewpoints is Empire. Should European people be proud or ashamed of their Empires of yesteryear? To what extent did the European Empires differ from the globally dominant Zio-American Empire of today? These questions are addressed by Eugène in his masterful prose. Citing thinkers such as Julius Evola, Friedrich Nietzsche and Jean Thiriart he contends that "European colonialism began when the soul of Europe died." Blakeney and Montsalvat discussed a variety of issues in the show, including: - The roots of Euro-American Imperialism - The legacy of post-Enlightenment Liberalism for European peoples - Muslim-Christian/White-Arab-Persian alliances as the antidote to the Zionist "War on Terror" - The problem of not situating domestic White-Muslim interactions within a geopolitical framework - The problem of failing to acknowledge the existence of false-flag terrorism when discussing White-Muslim relations - The Ukrainian "revolution" as top-down social change - Ernst Niekisch and National Bolshevism - The thought of Francis Parker Yockey, Jean Thiriart and Julius Evola and its implications for understanding the Muslim World Eugène's blog can be viewed here: https://niekischtranslationproject.wordpress.com His articles can be viewed here: http://www.counter-currents.com/author/emontsalvat/ Learn more about Joshua Blakeney's new book here: http://nonalignedmedia.com/2015/02/japan-bites-back-joshua-blakeney-new-2015-book-non-aligned-media/

Quotes: "I am thankful that both the President and First Lady are still alive but brutally mutilated. I condemn, however, the use of so-called "peacekeeping" forces made up of UN and French forces in the attacks on Abidjan and the presidential palace. It is these forces that have caused countless deaths in this densely populated city of four million people." - - - - - - - "I called for a cease fire and no one responded. This was eight days ago." "I again called for an immediate cease-fire, and no one responded." "And I call on UN, French and Ouattara forces to halt immediately "death squads" roving around the streets of Abidjan "disappearing" supporters of President Gbagbo." "This killing must stop now!" - - - - - - "This is not about the Gbagbos or Cote d'Ivoire, but about the modern day return to French Colonial Imperialism. And this time with the help of the United Nations." - - - - - - - - "President Museveni of Uganda who said yesterday, prior to the capture of the Gbagbos that: 'I have not been happy with the way the UN and International Community, especially the French have responded to the events of the post election Ivory Coast. I desired that it would have been ideal for a thorough Investigation into the alleged election rigging and it be done by a credible and independent body under the African Union leadership and guidance instead of violently forcing Laurent Gbagbo out of power without a hearing. I am not pleased with the way International Community can sanction a situation of blood bath in the domestic affairs of African Countries. I would prefer a peaceful intervention by an African Union committee that would investigate into the matter, give the parties a fair hearing and come out with a workable recommendation that can promote peace and stability in the region. The recommendation would include the possibility of a peaceful and conciliatory settlement towards a power-sharing deal as was done in the case of Kenya and Zimbabwe. At this point, I believe he would be happy to have a team of capable African leaders chosen under the auspices of African Union to work on a peaceful end to the conflict in Ivory Coast. I believe the Africa Union must be given the opportunity to handle the matter in-house. I am of course not pleased with the way the UN and the International Community has directly thrown their weight in support of Alassane Outtara and now recognizing him as president.'" - - - - - - "I have warned the UN and the French on this floor four times in the past week that they would have blood on their hands if they continued supporting the rebel forces of Alassane Ouattara and continued the bombing the capital of Cote d'Ivoire, Abidjan, and did not agree to an immediate cease-fire." - - - - - - - - "I also suggest that the United States step in to help and examine the possibility seeking a place of exile for the Gbagbos outside of Cote d'Ivoire. The U.S. has performed such a role before when in 1986, under the Reagan Administration, Haiti's "Baby Doc" Duvalier was sent into exile in France. This could be an important step towards beginning a process of reconciliation that the people of Cote d'Ivoire so dearly deserve." - - - - - - "Cote d'Ivoire has had a hard enough time trying to break free of the yoke of French colonialism. From the days of President Houphouet-Boigny in 1960 through Bedie in 2000 when Gbagbo was democratically elected. This shadow of colonialism must be lifted not only from Cote d'Ivoire but from all of Africa."

In one of the few anthropological works focusing on a contemporary Middle Eastern city, Colonial Jerusalem explores a vibrant urban center at the core of the decades-long Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This book shows how colonialism, far from being simply a fixture of the past as is often suggested, remains a crucial component of Palestinian and Israeli realities today. Thomas Abowd deftly illuminates everyday life under Israel’s long military occupation as it is defined by processes and conditions of "apartness" and separation as Palestinians are increasingly regulated and controlled.

The Times of India 2015-03-26Colonialism is the establishment, maintenance, acquisition and expansion of colonies in one territory by people from another territory. It is a process whereby the metropole claims sovereignty over the colony, and the social structure, government, and economics of the colony are changed by colonizers from the metropole. Colonialism is a set of unequal relationships between the metropole and the colony and between the colonists and the indigenous population.
The colonial period was the era from the 1550s to, arguably, the 1990s when several European powers (Spain, Portugal, Britain, and France especially) established colonies in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. At first the countries followed mercantilist policies designed to strengthen the home economy at the expense of rivals, so the colonies were usually allowed to trade only with the mother country. By the mid-19th century, however, the powerful British Empire gave up mercantilism and trade restrictions and introduced the principle of free trade, with few restrictions or tariffs.
Milton Friedman (July 31, 1912 – November 16, 2006) was an American economist, statistician, and author who taught at the University of Chicago for more than three decades. He was a recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, and is known for his research on consumption analysis, monetary history and theory, and the complexity of stabilization policy. As a leader of the Chicago school of economics, he influenced the research agenda of the economics profession. A survey of economists ranked Friedman as the second most popular economist of the twentieth century behind John Maynard Keynes, and The Economist described him as "the most influential economist of the second half of the 20th century…possibly of all of it."
Friedman's challenges to what he later called "naive Keynesian" (as opposed to New Keynesian) theory began with his 1950s reinterpretation of the consumption function, and he became the main advocate opposing activist Keynesian government policies. In the late 1960s he described his own approach (along with all of mainstream economics) as using "Keynesian language and apparatus" yet rejecting its "initial" conclusions. During the 1960s he promoted an alternative macroeconomic policy known as "monetarism". He theorized there existed a "natural" rate of unemployment, and argued that governments could increase employment above this rate (e.g., by increasing aggregate demand) only at the risk of causing inflation to accelerate. He argued that the Phillips curve was not stable and predicted what would come to be known as stagflation. Friedman argued that, given the existence of the Federal Reserve, a constant small expansion of the money supply was the only wise policy.
