This is a small but versatile knot. It's so versatile, in fact, that there's more than one way to tie it. Here's the easiest.
Step 1: Loop counterclockwise
Loop the end of the rope counterclockwise around the object you are hitching to (let's say a pole) and cross it over the remaining length of rope.
Step 2: Make another loop
Make another counterclockwise loop around the pole, but this time pass the end of the rope through the loop you've just formed (between the now two strands of rope looping around the pole).
Step 3: Tighten knot
Pull at both ends to tighten the knot.

Knot tying video tutorial. Learn how to make clove hitch knot in a bight. Easy step by step instructions for tying a clove hitch knot in this guide.
The clove hitch tied on a bight is knot #1178 in the Ashley Book of Knots. (ABoK). It can be quickly tied and thrown over a post, although it is not recommended for mooring a boat because of its tendency to slip or bind.
When used in climbing tied to a carabiner the clove hitch should be part of a closed loop climbing system or tied far from the ropes end. It unsafe as a termination knot. Its tendency to slip in that instance could lead to catastrophic failure. Backed up by a strangled double overhand knot according to the professional association of climbing instructors should mitigate the slippage . A nice feature is that you can adjust rope length without untying the knot or unclipping from the carabiner. This is convenient when adjusting rope length from an anchor. When used in a crabiner the load strand or direction of pull should be next to the spine of the carabiner for optimum performance.
Is sometimes used by arborists and tree workers to tie into the saddle in a closed climbing system. This allows the easy adjustment of the bridge between the saddle and the friction hitch.

Clove hitch
The clove hitch is a type of knot. Along with the bowline and the sheet bend, it is often considered one of the most important knots and is commonly referred to as a Double Hitch. A clove hitch is two successive half-hitches around an object. It is most effectively used as a crossing knot. It can be used as a binding knot, but is not particularly secure in that role. A clove hitch made around the rope's own standing part is known as either two half-hitches or buntline hitch, depending on whether the turns of the clove hitch progress away from or towards the hitched object.
Usage
This knot is particularly useful where the length of the running end needs to be adjustable, since feeding in rope from either direction will loosen the knot to be tightened at a new position. With certain types of cord, the clove hitch can slip when loaded. In modern climbing rope, the clove hitch will slip to a point, and then stop slipping. With smaller diameter cords, after being heavily weighted it may become difficult to untie. It is also unreliable when used on a square or rectangular post, rather than round.
