The United States transported five Yemeni detainees from Guantanamo on Wednesday. Four of the men were sent to Oman, while the fifth was sent to Estonia. The five men were cleared for release five years ago but could not be sent back to Yemen because of the fear that they would join Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks in Paris this month. Al Khadr Abdallah Muhammad al-Yafi, Fadhel Hussein Saleh Hentif, Abd Al-Rahman Abdullah Au Shabati and Mohammed Ahmed Salam, each held in Guantanamo for almost 13 years, were transferred to Oman. Ahmed, an Iraqi doctor, runs a makeshift clinic with his father, Jasim, out of their own home in bombed out Baghdad. The victims of war pour in, suffering everything from diphtheria to gunshot wounds. Ahmed's father does not charge for his services, knowing that his patients cannot afford treatment anyways. When supplies start to run low, however, Ahmed begins to question his father's incurable idealism. Oman, a dear friend of Ahmed, is hit by a roadside bomb and the clinic barely has the requisite medicine to keep him alive. Ahmed confronts his father about the worsening situation and when Jasim refuses to charge patients money, he resolves to take action himself. Both men's lives are changed forever when a wounded journalist is dragged into their clinic while they are already operating on a compatriot. The clock is ticking and Ahmed must weigh the lives of his countrymen against this journalist- a foreigner, but willing to pay. Can Ahmed sacrifice one of his own in the hope of saving hundreds more?

The United States transported five Yemeni detainees from Guantanamo on Wednesday. Four of the men were sent to Oman, while the fifth was sent to Estonia. The five men were cleared for release five years ago but could not be sent back to Yemen because of the fear that they would join Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks in Paris this month. Al Khadr Abdallah Muhammad al-Yafi, Fadhel Hussein Saleh Hentif, Abd Al-Rahman Abdullah Au Shabati and Mohammed Ahmed Salam, each held in Guantanamo for almost 13 years, were transferred to Oman. Akmed Abdul Qadei, captured by Pakistani authorities in 2002 when he was 17, was transferred to Estonia. Oman, despite its proximity to Yemen, is considered stable and has so far avoided the emergence of violence linked to militant Islamic fundamentalism that plagues its neighbors. Separated from Yemen by a large desert, Oman has been a U.S. ally for years. U.S. officials said the released detainees will have an easier time integrating into Omani society than a European one. The men’s release has been hotly disputed in Congress as several Republican senators remain opposed to the sudden influx of releases from Guantanamo. Thirty-three prisoners have been transferred in the past year alone. Several of the senators, including John McCain, proposed a moratorium on Obama’s ability to release prisoners from Guantanamo for the remainder of his term. Following the men’s release this week, the number of prisoners in Guantanamo is down to 122, a tremendous decrease from the 680 prisoners the complex held a decade ago. The disclosure cast doubt over whether a final deal to resolve the nuclear question is achievable by the deadline of November 24. Both America and Iran are preparing for a final round of talks in Vienna. John Kerry, the US secretary of state, will meet his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, in Oman tomorrow to settle the confrontation. Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama has written directly to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But the latest report from IAEA inspectors suggested Iran has broken earlier promises. In 2011, the IAEA disclosed information purporting to show that Iran's scientists had researched 11 separate technologies relevant to nuclear weapons. Iran admitted doing so in respect of two technologies, namely high explosive detonators and neutron transport calculations, but said these experiments had been carried out for civilian purposes. In May, Iran agreed to "exchange information" with the IAEA about this activity by August 25. But the IAEA disclosed yesterday that "Iran has not provided any explanations that enable the agency to clarify the two outstanding practical measures". Muscat, Feb 18 (ANI): Union Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj lauded Indian community in Oman for boosting the economy of oil-rich Gulf nation. She was addressing the Indian diaspora in Muscat. Swaraj arrived in Oman on Tuesday for holding bilateral talks with the nation's leadership. She is on two-day official visit at the invitation of the Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, and will discuss the entire gamut of bilateral relations, regional and international issues of mutual interest. Swaraj also thanked the NRIs (non-resident Indians) for taking part in large number in the diaspora event in India's western state of Gujarat in January. During her visit Swaraj will hold extensive talks with her Omani counterpart Abdullah on Wednesday (February 18). The two are also likely to discuss Modi's possible visit to Oman later this year.

Oman’s 73-year-old monarch, Sultan Qaboos bin Said has been out of sight for more than three months receiving medical treatment in Germany. Some analysts fear a looming succession crisis could destabilize one of the Middle East’s most peaceful countries. Other analysts say Oman’s unsustainable economy is more worrying than the immediate future of its monarchy. During the recent Muslim holiday, this video prayer for Sultan Qaboos was posted by someone on Twitter. “God give him good heath and extend his age,” said the woman in the video. A few days earlier the same user tweeted: “I miss you Papa #Qaboos.” Succession crisis Gulf State Analytics co-founder Giorgio Cafiero said the sultan’s fans are not the only ones concerned for his health. After decades of peace and prosperity, some Omanis and their neighbors are worried, if the sultan's health fails, a succession crisis could potentially throw the country into chaos. “He left for Germany three months ago on July 10 and he has not returned to Oman. Obviously, the longer he is gone, the more suspicions will be stoked that his health conditions are very serious,” said Cafiero. The Omani government says Sultan Qaboos is “in good health and continuing to follow the medical treatment he has been prescribed” but if this ceases to be true, no one knows who will be in charge, said Cafiero. “While it is possible that the succession process will happen smoothly, there are grave political risks that are on the minds of many people in Oman right now,” said Cafiero. If the royal family can’t agree on a successor who is viewed as legitimate by the economic elite, the military and the general public, Oman will be at risk of a prolonged power struggle, he said. And the instability that would ensue would not just affect Oman, he added. "The sultan has long had a hand in regional politics in the Arabian Peninsula and worldwide." “One of the key pillars of Oman’s foreign policy under Sultan Qaboos has been basically ‘be a friend of almost everyone.’ In the region, and also everyone in the world,” said Cafiero. Peacekeeper role These ‘friendships’ include rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran, he said, and Oman also is a key peacekeeper between Iran and the West. Omani foreign policy is not likely to make a large shift under a new leader, but a political crisis could shake the country’s ability to maintain this delicate balance. Additionally, said Andreas Krieg, an assistant professor from King's College London who also advises the Qatari Armed Forces, Gulf Cooperation Council countries, known as ‘the GCC,’ are worried about regionally security. “The concern is mostly, again, from Saudi Arabia and other players within the GCC who fear that there could be an instability within Oman, politically and domestically which could create another center of instability on the Arabian Peninsula,” said Krieg. Of particular concern to GCC countries is that Omani waters share the Strait of Hormuz with Iran. The strait is one of the world’s most strategic waterways with 20 percent of global petroleum products passing through it. Possible plan Krieg said it is not time to panic, though, since it is believed the sultan has named an unknown successor in the event his family cannot come to a consensus. “Generally [the sultan] himself is very widely respected. Even among those who are critical of his social and economic policies, they still respect him as a monarch, and I think they would respect any one he chooses to be his successor,” said Krieg. The state of the sultan’s health is “just speculation,” Krieg also cautioned, saying the real danger for Oman's future is economic instability. Whoever is in charge, he said, now has an uphill battle to develop a sustainable economy that can create jobs for its rapidly growing population amid diminishing oil returns. Simply put, Krieg said the sultan’s government has raised the standard of living by hiring large numbers of civil servants in Oman, and now the money is running out.

Watch locals standing around the auction floor bid for fish of all colours, shapes and sizes, while fishermen young and old land the night's catches on the huge beach outside, running up the sand with filled crates and fish threaded on lines. Bimmah Sinkhole ------------------------- This enormous sinkhole is mesmerising, its wonderful geological shape and still green-blue waters (a result of salt and fresh water mixing together) creating a picture of beauty. It's worth the long climb down (and back up again) to dip your toes in the water and to get a closer view of the 40m-wide (130ft) basin. Empty Quarter ------------------------- The largest desert in the Arabian Peninsula, north of Salalah, is the place to enjoy an exhilarating 4-wheel drive off-road experience, exploring territory that had not been crossed until just 80 years ago. Grand Mosque, Muscat ------------------------- Be wowed by gold, crystals, Italian white marble, a 10-tonne crystal chandelier lit by 1,122 bulbs and a 21-tonne carpet woven in one piece by 600 Iranian women. The women's room is much smaller than the men's. It took six years to build the mosque, whose huge gold dome and tall minarets dominate the skyline. Ras Al Jinz ---------------- Ras Al Jinz, near Sur, is the only place to spot protected turtles. More than 50,000 females make their way slowly up the beach every night to lay their eggs, before slipping back to the sea before dawn. July to October is the peak time for turtle watching. Rustaq Fort ------------- The sheer beauty of this mighty fort comes into view as you approach. It has been beautifully restored and is a maze of corridors, stairways, prettily-carved archways and fascinating rooms including the sultan's guest room, winter room, prison and women's and girls' rooms adorned with pretty bracelets, teapots and delightfully painted ceramics. Wadi Sahtan ------------------ Explore the beautiful ravine of Wadi Sahtan in the Rustaq region on a 4-wheel drive guided jeep tour. Pass by small ancient villages, beautiful, still green pools, 14 million date palms, and craggy cliffs, stopping off for a picnic lunch beneath the towering peaks. Best of all, enjoy the thrill of splashing at speed through small rivers along the way. Al Mughsayl blowholes ------------------------- These blowholes provide an amazing natural water display. During the monsoon, when sea levels rise and currents become more active, water surges though rock cavities, resulting in a superb display of gushing water. Al-Hoota Cave -------------------- You will encounter some of the country's limestone wonders at this cave, reached by Oman's only train It extends for 5km (3 miles) underground and the cave lake contains several species of blind fish. Bahla Fort ------------- This is one of the most impressive fortified settlements of its kind in the world and one of Oman's many World Heritage sites. Like several of its listed sites, it is not yet open to visitors. Before you leave, buy a souvenir pot from local Bahla potters but don't rub it - Bahla is famous for genies! Beach picnic --------------- Spend a day the Omani way with a picnic and the company of friends on the beautiful beaches of Yitti, Seifa or Quiryat or in the lush oleander-flowering wadis of Dayqah, Shab and Tiwi. Forts and castles ------------------------- Scale the battlements of one of Oman's many forts and castles in the old capital cities of Nakhal or Rustaq, and examine why honey wasn't always sweet for unwanted guests at the imposing Al-Hazm, Nizwa or Jibreen Forts. Muscat ----------- To get a true feel for Oman's whitewashed capital, follow the Muttrah Corniche from the lively fish market, past the balconied buildings of the Muttrah Souk and old Muscat to the Sultan's Palace, which shelters beneath the 16th-century Portuguese forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani. Nizwa -------- Renowned for its early-morning livestock market, winding alleyways and silver handicrafts, Nizwa was the country's capital during the sixth and seventh centuries. Buy copper and handicrafts from artisans at the souk.

It is the best-known wadi of the Sharqiyah region. Its stream maintains a constant flow of water throughout the year. Large pools of water and boulders are scattered along the course of the wadi. As a geographical area, Wadi Bani Khalid covers a large swathe of low land and mountains. Caves form some of the interesting features of this wadi. These include Kahf Maqal which is one of the Sultanate's underground chambers. However, reaching this cave takes a lot of effort and visitors should be prepared for the adventure. Springs of water are also common in this wadi. The springs of Ain Hamouda, Ain al Sarooj and Ain Dawwa, among others, are a blessing to the eye as one ventures along the wadis. The village of Badaa is a well-known tourist stop in the valley. The wadi is approx. 270KM from Muscat. Up until the 1970’s the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula was only accessible by various caravan routes but today it boasts an abundance of mysterious desert towns and splendid palaces.The white city of Sohar is the historic harbour of the Islamic world and the ‘Gateway To China’. It is still guarded by the white Sohar Fort, a mighty four-storey structure that dates back to the 14th century. The Hajar Mountains extend for almost six hundred kilometres from the Musandam Peninsula in the north to its eastern sections. They are also known as the Oman Mountains and divide the coast from the inland. Oman covers around three hundred thousand square kilometres and is one of the most sparsely settled countries in the world with only one and a half million inhabitants. Nizwa, the religious center of the Omans, has a moving past that manifests itself in the city’s defensive fortress. Until the 12th century it was the capital of the Desert State of Oman. Even today this oasis city and trading metropolis has lost none of its former importance. Al-Hamra is the name of a three hundred year old oasis village that dates back to the reign of Imam Saif Bin Sultan. At the end of the 17th century members of the Abriyin Tribe settled here the descendants of whom still live in the Jebal-Akhdar Mountains. Al-Hamra means ‘The Red One’, an Arabic name that is also to be found in the word ‘Alhambra’, in Spain’s Granada. The Sultanate Of Oman is a treasure trove of rarities. Its twelve thousand year old history is visible throughout the entire country and the beauty of the mysterious Arabian Peninsula is a truly captivating experience.

Nizwa is about 140 km (1.5 hours) from Muscat. The population is estimated at around 700,000 people including the two areas of Burkat Al Mooz and Al Jabel Al Akhdar. Nizwa is one of the oldest cities in Oman and it was once a center of trade, religion, education and art. Its Jama (grand mosque) was formerly a center for Islamic learning. Nizwa acquired its importance because it has been an important meeting point at the base of the Western Hajar Mountains. Set amid a verdant spread of date palms, it is strategically located at the crossroads of routes linking the interior with Muscat and the lower reaches of Dhofar thus serving as the link for a large part of the country. Today, Nizwa is a diverse prosperous place with numerous agricultural, historical and recreational aspects. Nizwa is a center for date growing and is the market place for the area. Attractions Nizwa, Oman ============== The main tourist attractions in the city are Nizwa Fort, the traditional Souq and Falaj Daris. In the 1990s, the Jama, the fort and the souq which sit next to each other in the centre were renovated using the same traditional materials. In 1993 Nizwa won the award of 'Organisation of Arab Cities'. Nizwa Fort ====== Nizwa fort was built in the 1668 AD by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'rubi. It is Oman's most visited national monument. The fort was the administrative seat of authority for the presiding Imams and Walis in times of peace and conflict. The main bulk of the fort took about 12 years to complete and was built above an underground stream. The fort is a reminder of the town's significance through turbulent periods in Oman's long history. It was a formidable stronghold against raiding forces that desired Nizwa's abundant natural wealth and its strategic location at the crossroads of vital routes. Nizwa Souq ============ The city, famous for its handicrafts and agricultural products, has an expansive souq with an array of products. It is one of the most important in the country besides Muttrah. The souq bustles with vendors selling everything from meat, fish, fruits and vegetables to spices, dates, gold and silverware. Nizwa is renowned for its silver jewelry which is considered to be the best in the country. Its people are masters in Khanjar making (curved dagger), recognised for its distinctive style and patterns. They also make copper ware, coffee pots, swords, leather goods and pottery. Falaj Daris =========== Falaj Daris (a World Heritage Site) is the largest falaj in Oman and is the life maintainer of Nizwa. It provides the surrounding countryside with much needed water for the plantations. Al Ghantuq and Dhoot are two other important falajs in Nizwa. Farming is widely practiced and the town's immense palm farms stretches for eight kilometers along the course of two wadis (Kalbouh and Al Abiadh). i/oʊˈmɑːn/ oh-MAAN; Arabic: عمان ʻUmān), officially called the Sultanate of Oman (Arabic: سلطنة عُمان Salṭanat ʻUmān), is an Arab state in southwest Asia on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea on the southeast and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast. The Madha and Musandam enclaves are surrounded by the UAE on their land borders, with the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman forming Musandam's coastal boundaries.
For a period, Oman was a moderate regional power, formerly having a sultanate extending across the Strait of Hormuz to Iran, and modern day Pakistan, and far south to Zanzibar on the coat of south-east Africa. Over time, as its power declined, the sultanate came under heavy influence from the United Kingdom, though Oman was never formally part of the British Empire, or a British protectorate. The Omani royal family claim that Oman has been ruled by the Al Said dynasty since 1744, although without substantial proof. Oman has long-standing military and political ties with the United Kingdom and the United States, although it maintains an independent foreign policy.
