Australia joined the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, following the September 11 attacks on the United States. Australia withdrew its forces in 2002 and re-deployed in 2005. Currently, about 1,500 Australian soldiers are stationed in Afghanistan. 11 Australian military personnel have died in Afghanistan. There have been a total of 1672 coalition military deaiths from Operation Enduring Freedom, according to icasualties website (to 1 March 2010). (Note that this website gives a slightly lower total figure for deaiths in and around Afghanistan) Australia has spent $3.6 billion or more, in Afghanistan, and has budgeted $1.2 billion to spend in 2009-2010. The cost of a new school in Afghanistan would be $US128,000. PM Kevin Rudd's approach is that the "war on terror" remains a priority of Australia's approach to security. In April 2009, MAPW wrote to the PM at a time when the government was reconsidering its stance in Afghanistan, recommending that Australian troops be withdrawn. The impacts of the war for Afghans Estimates of the number of direct civilian deaiths vary greatly, but the figure is likely to be over 20,000 (I). The New York Times reported civilian deaiths were rising by 40% compared to the previous year (Feb 2009). Recent wars in Afganistan have forced millions of Afghanis to leave their homes, with over 3.7 million displaced over the past two decades, including 1.5 million in Iran, 2 million in Pakistan and 235,000 within Afghanistan. Recent studies show local people to be increasingly sceptical regarding the outcome of the military intervention. Increasing numbers believe that security is deteriorating. Most Afghanis think that warlords have retained or increased the amount of weapons in their possession. This lack of faith is seen as due to insurgent activity, corruption within the security forces, the misuse of power by local warlords and the negative influence of neighbouring states (Care International, March 2009). Wars in Afghanistan, including the current one, have also caused major environmental destruction. A decline in safe drinking water has been reported as resulting from destruction of water infrastructure, bacterial contamination and water theft. Much of the major forests which once covered Afghanistan have been destroyed by warfare - through Taliban members illegally trading timber in Pakistan, by US bombings, and by refugees' need for firewood. Today, less than 2 per cent of the country is forested (Agence France Presse, June 2008)

Takfiri extremists Syria's insurgency killed 150 soldiers in a battle for control of an Aleppo suburb this week, including 51 who were executed after they had surrendered, according to a Syrian monitoring group that has been chronicling casualties and evidence of atrocities. The group, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which sympathizes with the opposition and reports daily tallies of combat and violence from a network of contacts on the ground in Syria, corroborated its assertion on Friday with a video posted on the Internet. The video, dated Wednesday, showed what appeared to be an execution ground, with dozens of lifeless bodies clumped against a wall pockmarked with bullet holes. The video's authenticity could not be independently confirmed, but the Syrian Observatory founder, quoted witnesses as saying 51 soldiers taken prisoner were later shot. Among the total who had surrendered, he said, "very few were taken hostage." Mr. Abdulrahman said the killers were members of the Nusra Front one of the many jihadist groups, some affiliated with Al Qaeda and populated with foreign fighters, that have entered Syria to join the insurgency battling the forces of President Bashar al-Assad in the conflict, now in its third year. Other reports have suggested that not all of the executed were soldiers but some were civilians who supposedly cooperated with the Syrian soldiers and got punished for doing so. In the graphic video posted online on wednesday shows some of the executed men not wearing any military outfits but rather standard casual clothing. This is a picture that has been circulating on facebook which reportedly shows some of the soldiers minutes before they were executed. The picture shows a Syrian soldier, the one in the middle of the last row, making the victory sign. Which caused alot of sympathy along the Syrian population. The reports from yesterday also indicate that all victims in this Syrian town were shot in the head from close range The killings took place in Khan al-Assal, the town near Aleppo that both Mr. Assad and the political opposition claim was the site of a deadly chemical weapons attack on March 19. Each side has accused the other of responsibility, but there has been no independent inquiry and no confirmation that such weapons were used. A United Nations delegation visited Damascus this week to negotiate terms for investigating the Khan al-Assal site and other locations where the opposition claims Mr. Assad's forces used chemical munitions. The outcome of the visit has not been disclosed. Russian experts have also collected samples from the site of the supposed attack in the Syrian town, These samples were examined in a certificated laboratory in Russia. According to the Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, there is "first-hand evidence" that the foreign-backed rebels have used chemical weapons in this incident near Aleppo. Boko Haram militants have reportedly invaded Mubi in Adamawa State and taken over the headquarters of the 234 battalion. The insurgents were said to have attacked the town last night causing residents and troops to flee the area. According to Sahara Reporters, the invasion began on Tuesday night in neighbouring towns before it spread into Mubi around noon on Wednesday, October 29. The 234 battalion is reportedly one of the largest in the town and soldiers guarding the facility were said to have initially resisted the attack but they were eventually overwhelmed after more Boko Haram members arrived with heavy firepower. This is the latest in attacks which have brought into question Nigeria’s purported ceasefire with the sect which was announced on October 17.

Battle turning against IS, says US Gen Martin Dempsey | BREAKING NEWS - 16 NOV 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS America's top general has told US troops in Iraq that momentum is turning against Islamic State militants. Gen Martin Dempsey, on an unannounced visit, called the militants "midgets" but said the battle against them was likely to take years. The US has launched air strikes against IS and has more than 1,000 personnel in Iraq to help to train local forces. IS controls huge areas of Iraq and Syria, though Iraqi forces have claimed victory in some recent battles. The Iraqi army said earlier they had driven IS from around the country's largest oil refinery near the town of Baiji. On Friday, officials said the military had also retaken Baiji, which had been under militant control since June. The UN recently accused IS of imposing a rule of terror in some areas of Syria, characterised by public beheadings as well as widespread rape and torture of civilians. Gen Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, flew to Baghdad for talks with Iraq officials, and to check on the progress being made against IS. According to Reuters news agency, whose reporters travelled with him, he told a group of marines at the US embassy in Baghdad that US forces had helped "pull Iraq back from the precipice". He said IS militants were not a force of 10ft tall fighters, but were instead "a bunch of midgets running around with a really radical ideology". However, he stressed that IS could not be defeated by the US alone. 'Boko Haram' kills 48 Nigerian fishermen near Chad | BREAKING NEWS 23 NOV 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Islamist militants from Nigeria's Boko Haram have reportedly killed 48 people in an attack on fish sellers near the border with Chad. A fish traders' group said some victims had their throats slit whilst others were tied up and drowned in Lake Chad. The attack took place on Thursday, but the news took several days to come to light because Boko Haram has destroyed mobile phone masts in the area. It was the second major attack in two days by Boko Haram. In Thursday's attack, the traders were on their way to Chad to buy fish when militants blocked their path near the village of Doron Baga, some 180km (112 miles) north of Maiduguri in Borno state. Abubakar Gamandi, the head of the fish sellers' association, said the militants had used no guns. "The attackers killed their victims silently without the use of the gun to avoid attracting attention from the multi-national troops," he told AFP news agency. Troops from Nigeria, Chad and Niger have been deployed to the area and have a base at Doron Baga, but the military task force has had little impact, says the BBC's Will Ross in Lagos. On Wednesday, Boko Haram gunmen attacked the village of Azaya Kura, also in Borno state, killing at least 45 people. In this attack too, victims' hands were tied behind their backs and their throats were slit. The attack was apparently aimed at punishing the community after four insurgents were pointed out to soldiers and were shot dead. Kim Jong-UN North Korea leader 'Appears in Public' | BREAKING NEWS - 14 OCT 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has made his first public appearance since 3 September, the country's official news agency says. The KCNA agency said on Tuesday that Mr Kim "gave field guidance" at a newly built scientists' residential district. Rodong Sinmun daily newspaper carried several photographs of Mr Kim using a walking stick as he inspected the site. The absence of the 32-year-old leader has prompted a flurry of speculation about his health. Some have even questioned if he remains in control of the secretive communist state. Official media have cited unspecified personal "discomfort" as grounds for Mr Kim's absence from public view. On Sunday, North Korea's ambassador to London told the BBC that Mr Kim was in good health. KCNA said that Mr Kim was briefed on the Wisong Scientists Residential District "before a map showing its bird's-eye view" and that he then "overlooked it". "Looking over the exterior of the apartment houses and public buildings, decorated with diverse coloured tiles, (Mr Kim) expressed great satisfaction, saying they looked very beautiful," the agency said. It also said that Mr Kim visited the newly built Natural Energy Institute of the State Academy of Sciences. Although the news release was dated Tuesday, it did not specify on which day he made the visits. Vatican Family Review Signals Shift on Homosexuality | BREAKING NEWS - 14 OCT 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Senior clerics taking part in a review of Catholic teachings on the family have called on the Church to adopt a more positive stance on homosexuality. A preliminary report written by bishops during a Vatican synod said homosexuals had "gifts and qualities to offer". The report does not challenge the Church's long-held opposition to same-sex marriage, but some gay rights groups hailed it as a breakthrough. Conservative groups rejected the report, one labelling it a "betrayal". More than 200 bishops have been taking part in the synod since 5 October. It was convened by Pope Francis to debate abortion, contraception, homosexuality and divorce. Monday's report, issued half-way through the two-week meeting, said: "Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community. "Are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a fraternal space in our communities?" President Sisi says Jihadists threaten Egypt's existence | BREAKING NEWS 26 OCT 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi says the country is facing a threat to its existence from jihadists after the military suffered the biggest loss of life in decades in attacks in Sinai. At least 31 soldiers were killed in two attacks on Friday, the deadliest a bomb blast near the town of El-Arish. A three-month state of emergency has been declared in parts of the Sinai Peninsula and Egypt's Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip was closed. There will be three days of mourning. In a live TV address, Mr Sisi said a huge plot was being waged against Egypt "by external forces". "This is meant to break up Egypt and the Egyptians .... Egypt is fighting a war of existence." No group has said it carried out the attacks, which came as the army continued an offensive against jihadists in northern Sinai. The area has become increasingly lawless since President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011. Militants have stepped up attacks since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was ousted by the army last year amid massive opposition protests. In the deadliest attack, 28 soldiers were killed and a similar number injured in a suicide bomb blast at a checkpoint near El-Arish, the main town in the north of the restive peninsula. Three more soldiers died in a separate shooting at a checkpoint in the town itself. Protesters Clash with Police at Hong Kong Legislature | BREAKING NEWS - 19 NOV 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Clashes have taken place between Hong Kong police and a small group of protesters who tried to break into parliament early on Wednesday. Protesters used metal barricades to break down a side door at the Legislative Council building (Legco). The incident happened hours after bailiffs and police peacefully cleared a section of the main protest camp. Protesters calling for full democracy have occupied three key sites in Hong Kong for nearly eight weeks. The BBC's John Sudworth in Hong Kong said that this latest incident was a reminder that the overwhelmingly peaceful protests can still turn ugly Dozens of young protesters, some wearing masks, tried smashing in the door shortly after 01:00. Some reportedly managed to enter the building. Riot police warned protesters to stay back, using red flags, and later used pepper spray to push them back. There were repeated attempts by protesters to enter the building throughout the night, but they appeared to retreat by daylight. Boko Haram Denies Ceasefire claim by Nigeria's Government | BREAKING NEWS 01 NOV 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ABCNewsChannel0 Boko Haram has denied claims by Nigeria's government that it has agreed to a ceasefire and will release more than 200 abducted schoolgirls. The group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, said the girls had converted to Islam and been married off since being taken. Nigeria's army announced a ceasefire with the militants on 17 October, saying the girls would soon be freed. But violence has continued since news of the alleged truce, including a fatal bomb blast on Friday. Boko Haram has been fighting an insurgency since 2009, with some 2,000 civilians reportedly killed this year. 'We will not negotiate' In a video released on Friday, Abubakar Shekau said: "We have not made ceasefire with anyone. We did not negotiate with anyone. It's a lie. "We will not negotiate. What is our business with negotiation? Allah said we should not." Shekau also claimed that the militants were holding a German national, thought to be a teacher, who was kidnapped by gunmen in July. There was no indication of when or where the group's latest video was shot. The BBC's Tomi Oladipo in Lagos says the video will come as a huge embarrassment for the Nigerian government after it said it had secured a ceasefire with Boko Haram. Mysterious US Spaceplane returns to Earth | BREAKING NEWS - 18 OCT 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS A US plane on a top-secret, two-year mission to space has returned to Earth and landed in California. The aircraft, resembling a miniature space shuttle and known as the Orbital Test Vehicle or X-37B, spent 674 days in orbit around the planet. It touched down at Vandenberg Air Force Base on Friday morning. The purpose of the plane remains unclear - a theory that it was taking a look at China's space lab has recently been downplayed by experts. Air Force officials have only told US media the aircraft performs "risk reduction, experimentation and concept-of-operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies". It is the third mission for the programme, started in 1999 and currently run by the Air Force's Rapid Capabilities Office. The first plane flew in April 2010 and returned after eight months. The second launched in March 2011 and remained in space for 15 months. The current aircraft - built by Boeing - utilises solar panels for power in orbit, measures over 29ft (9m) long, has a wingspan of nearly 15ft and a weight of 11,000lbs (4,989 kg). A fourth X-37B mission is said to currently be slated for launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in 2015. Ferguson Riots Ruling Sparks Night of Violence | BREAKING NEWS 26 NOV 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS The US town of Ferguson has seen rioting and looting after a jury decided not to bring charges over the killing of a black teenager. Michael Brown was shot by a white police officer, Darren Wilson, on 9 August, sparking protests. A police chief said the latest violence in the suburb of St Louis, Missouri, was "probably much worse" than on any night since the teenager's death. St Louis County police chief Jon Belmar said rioters had fired 150 shots. Many in the African-American community had called for Mr Wilson to be charged with murder, but after three months of deliberation a Missouri grand jury - of nine white and three black members - made no recommendation of charges. President Barack Obama joined the teenager's family on Monday in appealing for calm, urging Americans to accept the decision was "the grand jury's to make''. The BBC's Aleem Maqbool reported seeing more vandalism and looting after Monday's ruling than on any night in August. 'Torn apart' Authorities said more than 80 people were arrested amid chaos in several areas of St Louis overnight. Sixty-one of those arrests were in Ferguson, with charges including burglary and trespassing. The fabric of the community, Mr Belmar, had been "torn apart" in Ferguson, which is a predominantly black community patrolled by a mainly white police force. Sri Lanka Landslide Rescue Effort is Intensified | BREAKING NEWS 30 OCT 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Rescue workers in Sri Lanka have intensified their search for survivors of a tea plantation landslide in the centre of the country which is feared to have buried more than 100 people. Five excavators normally used to dig trenches joined the search effort at first light on Thursday, military sources told the AFP news agency. Officials have already warned there is little chance of finding survivors. It is not certain how many people are trapped in the debris. The deadly mudslide hit the Meeriyabedda tea plantation near the town of Haldummulla, about 200 km (120 miles) east of the capital Colombo, on Wednesday morning. Ministers told the Daily Mirror newspaper in Colombo that 150 people were trapped in the debris. The Island newspaper reported that as many as 250 people were buried alive. However Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera told AFP after visiting the site on Wednesday that the total was closer to about 100 people. He said that most of those who were classified as missing were subsequently discovered to be at work or in school. Correspondents say that compiling a definitive figure has been made harder because an office where village records were maintained was destroyed in the landslide. Mr Amaraweera said that the area surrounding the tea plantation had also been made unstable by the recent heavy monsoon rains and that the recovery operation would have to proceed "cautiously". Ebola Outbreak Liberia President lifts State of Emergency | BREAKING NEWS 14 NOV 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has lifted the state of emergency imposed to control an Ebola outbreak that has ravaged the country. She said the move did not mean "the fight is over", although numbers of new infections were no longer increasing. The confirmed death toll from the virus is now 5,160 people, almost all of them from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Meanwhile, clinical trials to find an effective treatment for Ebola are due to start in West Africa next month. The medical charity Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF), which has been helping lead the fight against the virus, says three of its treatment centres will host three separate research projects. 'New hotspots' In nationwide address, President Johnson Sirleaf said that night curfews would be reduced and weekly markets could take place across Liberia. She added that preparations were being made for the re-opening of schools. The state of emergency imposed in August had allowed the local authorities to curb movement in the worst-hit areas of the country, including the capital Monrovia. The lifting of the emergency comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) said "there is some evidence that case incidence is no longer increasing nationally in Guinea and Liberia". However, some reports suggest that new fresh hotspots have emerged in Liberia, the Associated Press reports. 39,000 year Old Mammoth goes on Display in Russia | BREAKING NEWS 03 NOV 2013 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS It may be nearly 40,000 years old but the carcass of a young woolly mammoth is in good shape and proudly on display in the Russian capital Moscow. The mammoth was found in 2010 in the Russian region of Yakutia. Thus, scientists called the carcass Yuka. The mammoth was between six and nine years old when it died. Yuka's preserved body shows signs that humans hunted for mammoths during the Ice Age, according to researcher Albert Protopopov. While Protopopov told the Associated Press that Yuka was 38,000 years old, other researchers place the mammoth's age at 39,000. Yuka was found in brilliant condition in permafrost, which allowed scientists the rare opportunity to study the well-preserved brain of the woolly mammoth. Reaching up to 13 feet in height, mammoths lived in Russia, northern China, Europe and most of North America before being driven to extinction around 10,000 years ago. Some researchers have deciphered some of woolly mammoth's genetic code and believe they could clone them if they found some living cells. However, Protopopov said. "It is not possible to find living cells as they don't survive after tens of thousands years." Before arriving in Moscow on Tuesday, the baby mammoth had toured Japan and Taiwan. It is on display at an exhibition of the Russian Geographic Union. Back in May, a 42,000 year old baby mammoth was displayed for the first time in Western Europe. The Natural History Museum hosted the carcass of Lubya, described as the most complete preserved mammoth in the world. 39000 Year-Old Baby Mammoth Goes on Display in Moscow 39000 Year Old Mammoth goes on Display in Russia Yuka the 39000 Year Old Woolly Mammoth Goes on Display The 39,000-year-old baby mammoth on display in Moscow 39,000-Year-Old Baby Mammoth on Display in the Russian Extremely rare 39000-year-old baby mammoth goes on Display TAGS: abc news, news24, cnn news, nbc news, breaking news, daily news, latest news, bbcnews, new, world news, egypt, news 24, israel news, local news, news today, channel 7 news, current events, india news, cnn live, news headlines, newspaper, business news, live news, sports news, reuters news, the news, today news, egypt news, sport news, uk news, headline news, news paper, star news, todays news, cnn breaking news, cnn international, cnnnews, japan news, fox news live, international news, libya news, top news, cnn news live, news live, world news today, yeshiva world news, cnn headline news, japan today, latest news india, world news now, yeshiva world news, cnn headline news, japan today, latest news india, world news now, canada news, news update, online news, abc world news, breaking news english, financial news, it news, nation news, news articles, news online, recent news, reddit world news, india news today, latest world news, canadian news, dutch news, political news, education news, interesting news, latest news headlines, news headlines today, world news headlines, worldnews, bahrain news, live news stream, market news, news of the day, news world, top news today, cnn latest news, italian news, latest breaking news, latest news in india, news for today, news websites, todays news headlines, british news, government news, japanese news, new news, news international, news updates, world football news, world news daily, world news tonight, world newspapers, zambia news, budget news, caribbean news, cnn news today, current events in the world, england news, europe news, latest news in kenya, live news online, news around the world, news week, short news, streaming news, weekly world news, world boxing news, breaking world news, european news, internet news, libia news, news japan, news latest, nhk world news, sweden news, the latest news, world breaking news
East Coast Storm Threatens Thanksgiving Travel | BREAKING NEWS 27 NOV 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS A winter storm along the East Coast on Wednesday brought with it a mix of rain, sleet and snow, slowing traffic, grounding planes and forcing scores of people to change their Thanksgiving plans. In New York City, 4 inches of snow is expected. But in the suburbs to the north and west of the city, as much as 10 inches of snow could fall before the evening is over. By midday, more than 1,000 flights were grounded across the East Coast and some 5,000 flights were delayed. With many people heeding calls to get out of town early, security lines started backing up well before the worst of the weather had descended on the region. On Twitter, it did not take long for frustrated commuters to post enough photos to form a collage of airport misery. The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued a winter storm watch for an area where more than 20 million people live in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, leading thousands of families to reconsider their travel plans to avoid being stuck on snarled roadways or stranded at congested airports. For some people, the potential for inclement weather simply meant little more than getting to Zabar's earlier than planned. Others, however, have not been so lucky, enduring hours on the phone to change a flight, spending some extra money to take the train rather than the bus, or taking off early from work to get on the road. The main focus for many people planning to travel for Thanksgiving is the so-called rain-snow line. Unlike the Mason-Dixon or the Maginot Line, this border has not been set and cannot be fortified. The divide between snow and rain falls along the Interstate 95 corridor, and on northern stretches of the roadway, the rain has already turned to snow, making for a rough ride for anyone leaving late in the day. India Stampede Patna Crush 'Leaves 32 Dead' | BREAKING NEWS For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS At least 32 people have died in a stampede at a Hindu religious festival in Bihar in northern India, officials say. Many of those killed in the incident in the state capital of Patna were women and children, Bihar chief secretary Anjani Kumar Singh told the BBC. He said 24 others were taken to the state hospital with injuries. The stampede broke out in Patna's Gandhi Maidan, as celebrations for the festival of Dussehra were being held. It is not yet clear what caused the incident, with reports suggesting it occurred in a narrow road as crowds dispersed from the outdoor venue. Eyewitnesses quoted by India's NDTV say the stampede started after word spread through the crowd that an electrical wire had snapped off and fallen down. Local journalist Niraj Sahay, who was at the scene, says an eyewitness told him that only one of the exits was opened for people to leave. The stampede started when some wires fell on the crowd, which people thought were electricity wires, he tells BBC Hindi. Hindu festivals in India are notorious for deadly stampedes, with large crowds often gathering in confined spaces. Rocket Bicycle sets 207mph Speed Record | BREAKING NEWS 12 NOV 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS A cyclist has ridden a rocket-equipped push bicycle into the record books by attaining speeds of 207mph (333km/h) at a racetrack in France. It took Francois Gissy 4.8 seconds to accelerate to his top speed at the Circuit Paul Ricard racetrack, near Marseille. The Frenchman believes he can achieve 250mph on his next run on the vehicle. However, he must first raise additional funds. "It's extremely intense, that's why it's a real feat," he told the BBC following Sunday's ride. "The bicycle is extremely lightweight, there's no aerodynamic covering and the force of the drag is extreme - maybe 200kg [440lb] of force on my body. "At the moment [of riding] it's very scary - there's no pleasure like you would get from a motorcycle. "But when you stop, you think - yes, that was amazing. The rocket-propelled bicycle, named Kamikaze 5, was designed by Mr Gissy's Swiss friend Arnold Neracher, and has been used in a series of ever-faster speed challenges organised by the two men since 2011. The current model uses concentrated hydrogen peroxide as fuel and silver as a catalyst. This generates heat and water, which is expelled as steam through a rocket nozzle, providing the bike with thrust This provides a safer alternative to normal rocket engines, which typically burn together two different chemicals. "On the bicycle it's just on and off, everything or nothing," Mr Gissy added. "It's a technical challenge, not just speed for speed's sake." Burkina Faso Leaders Agree Power Transition Plan | BREAKING NEWS 06 NOV 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Burkina Faso's political parties have agreed that the country's political transition should last a year, followed by elections in November 2015. But the crisis talks in the capital Ouagadougou ended without a deal on who would head a transitional government. The military has been in charge since President Blaise Compaore was forced to quit last week amid mass protests. The African Union (AU) on Monday gave the military two weeks to hand power to a civilian ruler or face sanctions. Lt Col Isaac Zida - the interim leader backed by the army - later promised to comply with the deadline. He was previously second in command of the presidential guard. 'Chaos' Wednesday's crisis talks in Ouagadougou were also attended by civil society groups and tribal chiefs, according to a statement issued after the meeting. The presidents of Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal mediated the talks. The statement added that all parties in the negotiations wanted an "eminent civilian personality" to head the transition, without providing further details. At one stage, the meeting descended into chaos as opposition politicians stormed out. "We do not want to talk with the old governing party. They represent Blaise Compaore," Rose-Marie Compaore, parliamentary leader of the main opposition group, was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency. But the opposition was later persuaded to return to the negotiating table. Rosetta mission Comet landing gets green light | BREAKING NEWS - 16 OCT 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS The decision to try to land a robot on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 12 November has been confirmed. Last month, planners on Europe's Rosetta mission announced a preference for a touch-down location on the head of the icy, rubber-duck-shaped object. A detailed follow-up analysis, informed by new high-resolution pictures, has found no reason to rescind the choice. The Rosetta probe will eject the Philae robot shortly after 08:30 GMT on the day of landing. The shove will be imparted at a distance of about 20km from the surface of 67P. The descent to the 4km-wide comet is expected to take about seven hours. Success or failure will be known roughly 30 minutes after that. This additional period is the length of time a radio signal takes to travel 509 million km - the separation between 67P and Earth in mid-November. Final confirmation of the touchdown sequence and location was given by the Lander Operations Readiness Review, which met at the European Space Agency's mission control in Darmstadt, Germany, on Tuesday. "Now that we know where we are definitely aiming for, we are an important step closer to carrying out this exciting - but high-risk - operation," said Fred Jansen, Esa's Rosetta mission manager, in a statement. "However, there are still a number of key milestones to complete before we can give the final 'go' for landing." So here is my presentation on the Zambian Economy in preparation for our Human Services Zambia trip. I realize that I may switch through the screens a little too quickly (I had more to say than I thought I would!) so please feel free to pause if you need time to read something. I also suggest you briefly take a look at the terms "Global North" and the "Global South" if you are unfamiliar with them. Reviewing them may help with discussion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_North (yes ... this is an informal Wiki link) And here is the presentation!!

In this Episode of Today with Zamtel we explored the culture and historical sites of one of #Zambia 's major border post towns in Muchinga Province, Nakonde. A town that lies on the border with #Tanzania , mostly seen as a thin rugged road that is always overcrowded with human traffic flocking between #Zambia and #Tanzania , however in this documentary we explore some interesting historical sites such as mass graves for German soldiers who were killed by British fighters during World War I, the burial site for the Ngoni King Zwangendaba, one of the Oldest slave Trade Routes-Stevenson Road and talk to chieftainess Nawaitwika who shares the History of the Namwanga People of Zambia. This Documentary was produced a year ago but I hope you enjoy watching and hopefully learn something from it. Remember to share it!!!!
African Safaris and travel 2015 - Botswana, Zimbabwe & Zambia - Africa trip 2015 Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube Africa has 54 sovereign countries—the most on any continent—and is the second largest continent in terms of both land area and population. Africa is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, by the Red Sea to the northeast, and by the Indian Ocean to the southeast. Africa is a vast continent spanning over 8,000km (5,000 mi) north to south and 7,500km (4,800 mi) east to west (not including islands) and contains a wide array of peoples, skin colours, religions, and cultures. Africa contains the world's longest river—the 6,650km long (4,100 mi) Nile River running from Burundi to Egypt—while the Congo River in the DRC is the second largest in terms of discharge as well as the deepest with a depth of over 230m (750 ft) in some spots. Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro is the world's tallest free-standing mountain at 5,890m (19,340 ft). Djibouti's Lake Assal is the second lowest point on Earth, the saltiest lake outside Antarctica, and one of the hottest places on Earth. While the first activity most people associate with Africa is safaris, there are endless possibilities for adventure. You can purchase crafts in markets, venture into the Sahara with a Tuareg caravan, visit pygmy villages, hike through jungle to watch gorillas, relax on tropical islands in the Indian Ocean, snack on exotic treats, travel down a river in a dugout "pirogue", travel across savannah on a colonial-era railway, and much more. Africa is a very diverse continent, with each country, or even each part of a country having its own unique culture. While it is common for people in the West to refer to Africa as if it was a single country, one should remember the sheer size of the continent, and that Africa is not one country but 54 different countries, meaning that it is impossible to make generalisations of Africa as a whole. Tragically misunderstood by many people as a land of poverty, corruption, war and famine, and simply as a land of suffering—a misconception only bolstered by the media and the numerous NGOs on the continent—Africa today is a vast continent with many bustling metropolises, friendly people, and amazingly diverse and beautiful landscapes. While there are some places resembling the stereotypical Africa of war, famine, and poverty, most of the continent is peaceful, well-fed, and of working class . See ========= Flora & Fauna ========== Many visitors are attracted by the African flora and fauna and several countries benefit from Safari tourism to African National Parks. Natural Wonders Africa is home to many famous natural wonders, from the Nile River, the world's longest river, to Victoria Falls. The continent is home to two of the world's four volcanoes with permanent lava lakes—the dramatic Mount Nyiragongo which rises hundreds of metres above Goma, DRC and Erta Ale in Ethiopia's stark Danakil Depression (the others are Mt.Erebus in Antarctica & Kilauea in Hawaii). Both volcanoes can be climbed by the adventurous tourist to stand at the rim gazing in awe at the bubbling lava below, an especially incredible sight at night! Landscapes ============ Historical civilizations While the continent's diverse and unique wildlife is often all that is mentioned in regards to African travel, as home to the oldest civilizations on the planet, Africa has equally impressive cultures and history. The most famous civilization on the continent, and arguably in the world, is that of ancient Egypt. From the southern city of Abu Simbel to Luxor and all the way north to Alexandria and Cairo, including the Pyramids of Giza, the only surviving of the original Seven Wonders of the World and the most iconic symbols of this ancient kingdom. Sites from the Nubian-Kushite Kingdom that broke away from Egypt can be found in Sudan, such as Gebel Barkal and many other pyramids in Meroe. Ethiopia offers many ruins from the ancient Axumite Kingdom where the Queen of Sheba ruled. The obelisks and Dungur ruins in Axum were built prior to the kingdom's conversion to Christianity, while many other great monuments, such as the Ezana Stone and the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, where the Arc of the Covenant is said to be stored, were built after the conversion as religious sites. Other famous Christian structures built later by the kingdom's successor, the Abyssinian Empire, especially during the 12th and 13th centuries, can also be found in Lalibela.

Travel video about destination Victoria Falls. Located in the south of the African continent and located on the Zambia/Zimbabwe border, the Victoria Falls are one of the world's most amazing and impressive wonders of nature.Between February and March when the Zambesi is at its strongest, an average of more than five hundred million litres of water shoot over edge of the waterfall every minute. Indeed, the dimensions of the Victoria Falls beats all records: at an average height of ninety seven metres, the Victoria Falls are around one and a half times as long and also twice as high as the world famous Niagara Falls in North America.Dense tropical rain forests now cover the former basins of earlier waterfalls and have thus created vegetation that would not normally thrive in the surrounding area. According British explorer, David Livingstone, the waterfalls were such an incredible sightthat even passing angels would have been awestruck and amazed by their outstanding beauty. Even a century and a half after they were first discovered the majestic Victoria Falls are still one of the greatest natural spectacles in the world.
We see the sights of Livingstone, see the sunset along the Zambezi, take a helicopter ride over the Falls, and feed some inquisitive monkeys at our hotel, th...

Fawlty Towers Video Tour - Livingstone Zambia www.bucketthis.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/bucketthis I stayed at a hostel named after one of my favourite British comedies, Fawlty Towers. I was drawn by the name, but stayed based on the amazing reviews and location. This is probably the nicest hostel I’ve ever stayed in. I feel like I’m lying by calling it a hostel. It’s more of a motel, but without the sleazy euphemism? Er..assumptions made by using the word motel. There is lush green space, a swanky pool and bar area and free pancakes at 3pm! Who’s at their hostel at 3pm though? ;0 Well me my first day there, so I can review the pancakes. They were excellent! There are 24 rooms in this joint, ranging from deluxe private rooms to dorm style rooms. I decided to spoil myself after my camping stint in Botswana and got a private room. Its easier to edit video in the wee hours when you’re alone. I did get a tour of the facility and the dorm rooms and pretty darn nice. The location is central and I believe the closest hostel to the falls. Though you’ll still need to cab to the falls, unless you’re dumb like me and enjoy long walks on country roads with baboons and elephants. The rooms range from $15/night for a dorm room to $75/night for a twin deluxe ensuite. Word on the street is that you can camp there too, but I saw nary a camper. You probably want to book this sucker is advance because it is well known and could sell out fast. Thanks! Matt Fudge www.bucketthis.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/bucketthis

Africa is a continent blessed in natural resources. Given the continents' painful past, this can either be viewed as more of a curse than a blessing. Celebrating 50 years of independence and 14 years since the re-privatization of its mines, Zambia is an economy looking to gain traction on its own resource growth trajectory. CNBC Africa's Gugulethu Mfuphi sits down with leaders in the country's mining fraternity as they give their insights into the future of mining in Zambia; these include Nathan Chishimba, director of Barrick Lumwana Mine, Jackson Sikamo, president of Zambia Chamber of Mines and Mathias Mpande, economist & lecturer at the University of Zambia.

All Africa 2015-04-11Zambia ( /ˈzæmbiə/), officially the Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. The neighbouring countries are the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the north-east, Malawi to the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia to the south, and Angola to the west. The capital city is Lusaka, located in the south-central part of the country. The population is concentrated mainly around Lusaka in the south and the Copperbelt Province to the northwest.
Originally inhabited by Khoisan peoples, the region which comprises modern Zambia was colonised during the Bantu expansion of the thirteenth century. After visits by European explorers in the eighteenth century, Zambia became the British colony of Northern Rhodesia towards the end of the nineteenth century. For most of the colonial period, the country was governed by an administration appointed from London with the advice of the British South Africa Company.
On 24 October 1964, the country declared independence from the United Kingdom and then-prime minister Kenneth Kaunda became the inaugural president. Kaunda's socialist United National Independence Party (UNIP) maintained power from the 1964 until 1991. From 1972 to 1991 Zambia was a single-party state with the UNIP as the sole-legal political party, with the goal of uniting the nation under the banner of 'One Zambia, One Nation'. Kaunda was succeeded by Frederick Chiluba of the social-democratic Movement for Multi-Party Democracy in 1991, during which the country saw a rise in social-economic growth and increased decentralisation of government.
Hey Zambia where you hide?
I could find you if i tried
Here i go, Here i come.
Playing this game so much fun
Playing ghosts in the dark
Country houses far apart
See your grandad smoking pipe,
Hear the birds cry in the night.
See my Emily, calling out to me,
Waving to me from the past.
Merrily we play, Merrilly we play
Vague recollections that last.
Oooh Zambia
Making castles in the sand
See the big ship far from land.
Watch them go, watch them come.
Eating ice cream in the sun.
Hey girl what you do tonight?
Ask your mummy if alright
That your coming out with me,
We'll make love behind the tree.
See my Emily, calling out to me,
Waving to me from the past.
Merrily we play, Merrilly we play
It starts with a twitch and
works its way up to a smile
as the woman from the
magazine introduces you.
There's a long line of fools
just waiting to be told what to do
as the man of the cloth is
zipping up his fly.
The Reverend comes forth
and he takes your hand
and he blesses you
and you notice he
wears a rolex made of gold.
It's cold in the Highlands of Zambia
It's warm in the Hot Springs of Alaska
Backed into the corner,
suffocating in the scent
you swore you're never
wind up here again.
Your eyes are upon her,
as she's handing you
the telephone,
and you tell the wife
"I'll be working late tonight."
Lights go down.
As your eyes roll back
you think to yourself that
It's cold in the Highlands of Zambia
It's warm in the Hot Springs of Alaska
It's cold in the Highlands of Zambia
It's dark at the other side of my smile
It starts with a twitch that you
can't quite work into a smile
As the woman from the
magazine can't recall your name.
The reverend's out cold
and the fools have
started throwing things
then the lights come up and you realize
it's people like these
that make me think that
It's cold in the Highlands of Zambia
It's warm in the Hot Springs of Alaska
It's cold in the Highlands of Zambia
It's dark at the other side of my smile
It's cold in the Highlands of Zambia
It's dark at the other side
