Part Human part animal genetic hybrids A parahuman is a human-animal Genetic engineering hybrid or chimera hybrid. For Years Scientists have done extensive research into the mixing of genes or cells from different species, e.g. adding human (and other animal) genes to bacteria and farm animals to mass-produce insulin and spider silk proteins, and introducing human cells into mouse embryos. Para humans have been referred to as "human-animal hybrids" in a vernacular sense that also encompasses human-animal chimeras. The term parahuman is not used in scientific publications. The term is sometimes used to sensationalize research that involves mixing biological materials from humans and other species. According to Daily Mail, as of 2011, more than 150 human-animal hybrid embryos were created in British laboratories since the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008. With respect to animal-human mixing, no evidence of any entities being born has ever been recorded but new developments in crossing the species barrier may no longer limit animal-human mixtures to the domain of mythology. Indeed, procedures have recently been developed by scientists which mix human and animal biological elements to such an extent that it questions the very concept of being entirely human. For example, concern for animal-human mixtures was raised in 2001 by the UK Animal Procedures Committee which indicated in its Report on Biotechnology that though questions may exist as to the likely fate of such animal-human mixtures, there may be a deeper repugnance at the thought of their very existence. Indeed, The Regulation of New Biotechnologies and published in 2004, that the crossing of the animal-human boundary was, in some respects, quite complex and subtle but that the mixing of human and animal tissues and materials was not by itself objectionable. In other words, in the context of therapy and preventive medicine, the President's Council accepted that the transplantation of animal parts to replace defective human ones could be considered as ethical. Moreover, the Council had no overriding objection to the insertion of animal-derived genes or cells into a human body - or even into human fetuses.

But observers say the current crop of leaders will resist any change to the status quo that has for decades insulated them from criticism, particularly as they face a new generation of voters with a different vision for the future. The 91-year-old patriarch who died yesterday transformed Singapore into a high-tech industrial hub and financial centre but also entrenched a system notorious for one-party rule, the muzzling of the press and curbing of political liberties. Sharanjit Leyl presents this special 45-minute programme to mark 50 years of Singapore's independence, recorded at 2310hrs SGT on 1 Mar 2015. The following presentation is reproduced from the BBC News online website @ http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-31626174 Fifty years ago Singapore became an independent state, after leaving the short-lived Malaysian Federation. With no natural resources, just how did this tiny country go from swamp to one of the region's leading economies? On the strength of its human resources - immigrants like my grandfather. At the age of 17, with only the shirt on his back, Fauja Singh left his parents in a small Punjabi village and made the long and dusty journey on foot and by train to Kolkata (Calcutta), where he caught a ship to his new home. It was the early 1930s. He arrived in a melting pot of cultures and chaos on an island at the mouth of a river, which bustled with trade - Singapore. Once a swamp-filled jungle, when the British arrived in 1819, under the leadership of Sir Stamford Raffles, the makings of modern Singapore began. Lying at the mid-point of the shipping route between India and China, it became a thriving trading port, and with this trade came a huge influx of immigrants from all over Asia. Life was not easy for the new arrivals. Many from China worked as labourers and lived in squalid and cramped conditions. Fauja worked in jobs ranging from night watchman to milk vendor and moneylender. When he had made enough money he went home to fetch his brother, sister and young bride from Amritsar. Fauja and his wife Swaran Kaur had eight children. His eldest son Kernail excelled academically and made it to the country's most prestigious school, Raffles Institution. He went on to win scholarships at university and after graduating he joined the government of a young and newly independent nation. Fauja Singh was my grandfather, and Kernail my father. They paved the way for me to be educated and well-off. It's a story that echoes that of many Singaporeans, and also of the nation itself. Singaporeans are among the world's wealthiest populations - Ferraris and Rolls Royces are a common sight on the clean streets. It's a far cry from the island's humble beginnings, when more than a million Singaporeans lived in "squatters" - makeshift wooden houses in villages known by the Malay term "kampongs". My father and his siblings grew up on a large plot of land that sits in current-day Bukit Merah, an area in central Singapore whose name means "Red Hill". My grandfather claimed the land by planting a perimeter of banana trees which formed dense foliage and kept others out. Then he built a house so large, he would later rent out its back rooms to lodgers. But the house, like many at the time, was rudimentary. My aunt, Manjit Kaur, was born there in pre-independence Singapore. "It was a hard life. There was no water, no healthy water," she says. "We lived a simple life, our neighbours were simple. We looked after each other and we had the same goal - to survive." In 1959, Britain took the first steps toward granting independence by allowing Singapore to govern itself. The charismatic Lee Kuan Yew of the People's Action Party won a landslide victory in the first fully elected parliament. Manjit remembers the family attended a political rally, despite not speaking the language. "We didn't understand a word but I think whatever he was saying must have been quite important because everyone was paying attention. They clapped every time he would say something. When they clapped, we clapped," she says. This was a revelation to me - I had no idea my grandfather had had any interest in politics. In August 1963, Singapore joined the Federation of Malaysia. It was made up of four countries and territories - Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore. Manjit remembers celebrating the union at school. "We started learning a song called something like Let's Get Together, Sing a Happy Song, Malaysia Forever." But it wasn't forever. The members of the federation disagreed on fundamental issues like who should control the finances of Singapore. Racial tensions led to riots between Singaporean Chinese and Malay groups. In 1965, Singapore was forced to leave the Malaysian Federation. Manjit remembers seeing the prime minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, cry during an interview. "We'd go to our neighbours' house and watch TV and we saw him crying and we didn't know why." It was a traumatic beginning to independence. Many believed Singapore could not survive on its own. But with huge hopes for the future, Singapore began to build the infrastructure that would transform the city. Founding father and former prime minister of Singapore who transformed country into one of world's richest nations dies aged 91 He was admired for the transition but feared for his authoritarian methods But he was criticised for his iron grip on power. Under him freedom of speech was tightly restricted and political opponents were targeted by the courts. He was on life support after being admitted to hospital for pneumonia Lee transformed the country from a port city into a global finance centre He was admired for the transition but feared for his authoritarian methods President Barack Obama called him 'one of the legendary figures of Asia' Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew dies at age 91 (Reuters) Lee Kuan Yew, the towering figure in post-colonial Asia who oversaw Singapore's transformation to a global city in just over a generation, is dead at age 91 Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first prime minister and a towering figure in post-colonial Asia, is dead at age 91. He passed peacefully at a Singapore hospital in the early morning hours of Monday local time, according to the current Prime Minister's Facebook page. Lee Kuan Yew was widely credited as the architect behind the rapid rise of this tiny Southeast Asian city-state. A Cambridge-educated lawyer, he transformed Singapore from a British tropical outpost into an affluent, global city in just over a generation. Fifty years after it's formation, Singapore is one of Asia's most livable and corruption-free countries. But Lee also had little patience for opposition views and the Singapore he helped create has been criticized for heavy-handed government with little tolerance for dissent. (BBC) Lee Kuan Yew, the statesman who transformed Singapore from a small port city into a wealthy global hub, has died at the age of 91. The city-state's prime minister for 31 years, he was widely respected as the architect of Singapore's prosperity. But he was criticised for his iron grip on power. Under him freedom of speech was tightly restricted and political opponents were targeted by the courts. A state funeral will be held on 29 March, after a week of mourning. Mr Lee oversaw Singapore's independence from Britain and separation from Malaysia. The announcement of his death came in the early hours of Monday. "The prime minister is deeply grieved to announce the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the founding prime minister of Singapore," the office of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Mr Lee's son, said in a statement. Mr Lee died peacefully at Singapore General Hospital at 03:18 local time on Monday (19:18 GMT on Sunday), it said. He had been in hospital for several weeks with severe pneumonia. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he was "deeply saddened" by Mr Lee's death and offered his condolences to the people of Singapore. 'Incalculable contributions' A charismatic and unapologetic figure, Mr Lee co-founded the People's Action Party (PAP), which has governed Singapore since 1959, and was its first prime minister. The PAP said in a statement on Facebook: "While we mourn the passing of one of the greatest leaders of our party, we celebrate his incalculable contributions to Singapore and its people." Singapore's President Tony Tan has written an open letter of condolence in which he describes Mr Lee as "the architect of our modern republic". line At the scene: Tessa Wong, BBC News The news broke early in Singapore, but it was an announcement many had expected. Mr Lee had been in hospital for more than a month and his condition worsened last week, prompting a deluge of concern both online and at public areas set up for people to pay tribute. As the nation woke up, a few people began arriving at the hospital, including a retiree and a family of four who wanted to pay their respects before their children went to school. Television and radio immediately began playing pre-recorded packages on Mr Lee's life. Mr Lee's son, PM Lee Hsien Loong, said he was "deeply grieved". In the days leading to his father's death, he had been a frequent visitor at the hospital. On Friday he shared a photo of himself as a baby smiling and held aloft by his father on social media. "So many happy memories over a lifetime," he wrote. Mr Lee, a Cambridge-educated lawyer, led Singapore through merger with, and then separation from, Malaysia - something that he described as a "moment of anguish". Speaking at a press conference after the split in 1965, he pledged to build a meritocratic, multi-racial nation. But tiny Singapore - with no natural resources - needed a new economic model. "We knew that if we were just like our neighbours, we would die," Mr Lee told the New York Times in 2007. "Because we've got nothing to offer against what they have to offer. So we had to produce something which is different and better than what they have."

Published on oct 03, 2014 Turkey joining fight against ISIS | BREAKING NEWS - 03 OCTOBER 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headline SUBSCRIBE: - https://www.youtube.com/user/BBCWorldNews1000 Turkey's lawmakers voted Thursday to authorize military force against the Islamic State terror group in Syria and Iraq, opening the door to cooperation with a U.S.-led coalition going after ISIS as its fighters laid siege to towns just south of the Turkish border. The Turkish Parliament voted 298-98 to not only to let the country's military leave its borders to go after ISIS and other terror groups, but also allow foreign troops to launch operations from Turkey. The authorization takes effect Saturday. It is a big shift for Turkey, a NATO member, which until now offered only tacit support to a U.S.-led coalition of about 40 nations going after ISIS in Iraq and Syria in various capacities. The mood of Turkey's leaders changed in recent days, with ISIS on the nation's doorstep and tens of thousands fleeing across its border. The Prime Minister asked Parliament to consider military action this week, submitting a motion declaring that Turkey was seriously threatened by the chaos in Syria and Iraq, where ISIS has captured land and is trying to establish an Islamic caliphate. For months, ISIS has been advancing, capturing portions of northern and eastern Syria and western and northern Iraq for what it says is its new Islamic state, or caliphate. The fighting has only intensified in the region in recent days, with ISIS advancing and nearly surrounding the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobani, known in Arabic as Ayn al-Arab, just a few miles from the border with Turkey. If ISIS takes Kobani, it will control a complete swath of land from its self-declared capital of Raqqa on the Euphrates River to the Turkish border, more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) away. Abdi said he was waiting at the border at Mursitpinar with approximately 3,000 people waiting to cross into Turkey. Saroat Saeed, a university student, said he had made it across the border after waiting with what he said were the last civilians to leave Kobani. Only fighters trying to defend the city now remain, he said, but it is surrounded by ISIS and they face a dire situation. Enjoy this new economy class experience onboard Air France's Boeing 777-300ER. This particular aircraft features the new first, business, premium economy and economy class product. Verdict: Seat: The seat was comfortable with generous legroom. Entertainment: The IFE was impressive and the touchscreen was responsive. Service: The cabin crew were professional and were prompt to requests. Meal: The dinner service was a letdown. The portion was too small but I guess that's what you get for a short flight. The lemon cake wasn't to my liking either. Overall: It was an enjoyable experience on this short flight with Air France. SINGAPORE: Business leaders Channel NewsAsia spoke with cheered the revised growth forecast of between 2.5 and 3.5 per cent for Singapore's economy this year. Some were surprised that a two-per cent growth was registered in the first half of the year, given the weak nature of external economies. But they also said the positive news does not mean companies should rest on their laurels. Singapore's tourism and services sectors may have helped the economy grow by two per cent in the first half of 2013. That was the sense of many business leaders, upon receiving news that the country's economy is doing better than expected. But the sense of optimism was not shared by all. Thomas Chua, president of Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: "From our dialogue session with the many trade associations' leaders, their feedback is not very optimistic, because of labour shortage, because of the rental that drives the business costs." While business leaders cheer a more positive growth forecast for Singapore, they said there are certain companies that need help, especially the smaller ones. Government help is available for small and medium enterprises, but some businesses said more can be done to keep firms informed of such help. At the same time, they said the onus is on them to be creative and raise productivity, even if times are tough for the smaller players. Teo Siong Seng, managing director of Pacific International Lines, said: "Regular dialogue is important for the government to understand their plight, and at the same time for them to heed to the government's call for improvement and also innovation." Some experts said the relatively poor growth in the manufacturing sector did not dent Singapore's potential for doing well too much, thus far. Song Seng Wun, economist at CIMB, said: "The bottom line here is we had a slow start to the economy, the economy picked up pace in the second quarter itself on manufacturing recovery, and that perhaps could be sustained into the second half." Observers noted that if the momentum for growth can carry on, Singapore can look forward to a better-than-expected year in 2014. www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/business-leaders-cheer/769660.html

We were on our way home after a holiday in Europe. We had spent the night (actually only about 6 hours) at the Dubai Airport Hotel. The day before, we flew from Rome to Dubai. Today, after a short but refreshing sleep, we will be flying back to Singapore via Colombo. Why via Colombo? Well, Emirates operates a daily flight to Singapore via Colombo. What is the experience going to be like? You can watch the video to find out but here are some details. The aircraft today was a Boeing 777-300ER. This was our first B-777 on Emirates as all the earlier flights were on their A380s. Our seats were right at the rear, where the plane fuselage narrowed and the seats were in a 2-4-2 configuration. The flight time from Dubai to Colombo was just under 4 hours. Smooth flight with good food and service on board. Breakfast was served on this leg. I chose the Chicken Curry option and it came with Roti Pol, or a thicker form of Roti Prata (plain). It tasted very good. See 4:40. I watched the scenery as we landed into Colombo. Thick vegetation. See 6:00 Temperature on the ground was 30 deg C. I have never been to Colombo but that place has a long history too, due to its strategic location at the cross roads of trade routes between East and West. When the plane landed, we were informed by the cabin crew that passengers heading to Singapore could not get off the plane. This was a strict rule with no exceptions. I noticed that about half the plane alighted, which means half of us from Dubai had our final destination as Singapore. See 9:30 for passengers disembarking. The transit on the ground was approximately 1hr 30 minutes. Wow, we were going to be stuck on the plane for 90 minutes. Oh well, let's make the best of it. The good thing was that the In Flight Entertainment system was turned on all the way. Many passengers continued to watch movies but I was certainly getting restless. Ground crew came on board to clear the rubbish and prepare the cabin for the next flight. It was interesting to have a half-full plane watching the ground crew work. See 10:10. As I was seated near the rear of the plane, I heard a lot of activity going on, so I went behind to take a look. See 10:30. The rear aircraft door was opened and a catering truck had pulled up to the plane. That made sense. The plane was taking on fresh supplies for the next flight as well as older trolleys were taken off. Since I had nothing better to do, I watched the ground crew do their work. Shortly after, there was an announcement that cabin crew was to begin identifying cabin buggage. See 11:40. Huh? Oh, the idea was to positively ID all overhead cabin baggage to make sure that all remaining baggage on board belonged to passengers that were still on board. That made sense, from a security perspective. This was done very efficiently. A short while after, the plane began boarding new passengers. The flight was full. Every seat was taken. Emirates certainly has good business. The doors closed and we were on our way again, this time to Singapore. Flight time was 3 hours and 30 minutes. Again, it was a very smooth flight. The lunch served was very good too! I had some chicken with fried rice. See 15:46. My kid had spaghetti plus lots of stuff to eat like Kit Kat. Overall, it was a good flight. The cabin crew had to work doubly hard and I didn't envy them. They were still cheerful and professional throughout. We landed in Singapore on time. Overall, the time from Dubai to Singapore took 9 hour 30 minutes, compared to about 7 hours if you flew direct and non-stop (Singapore to Dubai).

2014 Sept 30 @ Ngee Ann City ABOUT TEOCHEW FESTIVAL 2014 The Teochew Festival is organised in conjunction with the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan’s grand 85th anniversary celebrations in Singapore. The tagline for this festival broadly translates as ‘We are One Teochew Family’ and the logo is an artistic rendition of a distinctive Teochew snack – the ‘png kueh’ or rice cake. Eight ‘png kueh’ are strategically interlinked in a circle to symbolise harmony, community, union and family ties. The Teochew Festival would be the first time that the Huay Kuan has organised a festival showcasing Teochew culture on such a large scale. The Huay Kuan hopes to give the public a vivid representation of Teochews through enlightening glimpses into their daily lives, and to a larger extent also highlight an important aspect of Singaporean Chinese culture. Please [Subscribe] to be notified of new uploads. When it comes to street food Asia is without a doubt the leader in terms of top notch delectable and inexpensive bite sized delights. Prior to teaching English in South Korea, having grown up in Canada, I really didn't know what street food was all about. Over the past decade, having focused most of my time living and traveling in Asia, I've become such a huge fan of street food that I feel as though I'm being robbed whenever I visit a country or city where I'm unable to get it. When you think of street food in Asia numerous countries pop into mind. The standouts in my opinion are Korean street food, Chinese street food, Thai street food, Malaysian street food, Vietnamese street food and Taiwanese street food. The following is a travel and food guide to the best street food to be found in Asia: 1) Thai Street Food Where can you find Thai street. In a word - everywhere! Street food in Thailand is as much a part of daily life as songthaews and Buddhist monks. In this video we showcase the Saturday Night Market in Chiang Mai, Thailand where we sample numerous street food delights including twist potatoes, blueberry cheesecake ice cream, pan-fried dumplings, sausage and banana pancakes with chocolate. 2) Korean Street Food I've said it before but it is worth repeating again: "There is no place on earth that offers better street food that South Korea." Called 'pojangmacha' some of my favorites include tteokbokki and hotteok. If you're in Seoul consider checking out Insadong and Namdaemun for a diverse selection of delectable delights. 3) Macanese Street Food Friends had told us about the legendary street food in Macua. Fortunately for us we had an opportunity to try it ourselves. Some of the top highlights included egg tarts, pork chop bun, almond cakes, soy milk and Taiwanese pearl milk bubble tea. 4) Chinese Street Food Our favorite city to eat street, while traveling in China, was the night market in Yangshuo. We started off with satay, a smoky and spicy meat and then moved on to Chinese banana pancakes. Compared to other countries where I've tried banana pancakes this one compared favorably. 5) Malaysian Street Food I've visited many night markets in Asia and the Jonker Street Night Market, located in Malacca, Malaysia, is one of my all time favorites. On a hot and humid evening we had a chance to cool down with some delicious Cendol - a shaved iced dish with coconut milk, cane syrup, jellies and beans along with some refreshing sugarcane juice. 6) Singapore Street Food Singapore is by far the most expensive country in Southeast Asia to visit. Accommodation is expensive. Eating at restaurants costs a small fortune. The solution? Hawker Centres. These open air food stall complexes serve up wonderful delights from cuisine all over Asia and especially SE Asia. We were lucky enough to sample Hainanese chicken rice, butter chicken, butter naan, satay and dim sum. 7) Khmer Street Food Have you ever tried insects before? Prior to traveling in SE Asia I had yet to experience eating an insect. While in Cambodia I had the chance to devour some deep-fried crickets. Surprisingly, they were delicious - tasting similar to a potato chip. 8) More Malaysian Cuisine While wandering around in Melaka we cooled down with Cendol - this time with ice cream while munching on deep-fried banana. 9) More Thailand Cuisine Here we show you the infamous Thai banana pancake, also known as banana roti, as made from scratch Thai style. While living nearby Chiang Mai Gate we came here often to this stall for a sweet treat and for some dessert. Coming in at only 30 Baht (1 USD) it's the kind of treat where you can have more than one. 10) Thai Cuisine once again One of our favorite outdoor stalls in Chiang Mai served yellow noodles with dumplings. The wanton like dumplings were a real treat. Coming in at just over a dollar we ate here often to save money. This is our street food guide to Asia. Did you enjoy it? What are some of our favorite street foods from Asia or around the world? This is part of our Travel in Asia series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Asian culture, Asian arts, Asian foods, Asian religion and Asian people. The Edible Art Movement invited 500 guests on a sensory journey through Singapore: Throughout history, depictions of food have been used by artists as a portal into place, culture and moment; charting the intangible experiences of a land. EAM's artists and poets collaborated with Chef Matthew Mok to distill food into a sumptuous symbol, expressing the essence of Singapore on the banquet table. Through the water and across the soil, over exotic contours and into nostalgic nooks; we curated an ephemeral adventure in this conceptual collaboration between food and art. The National Institute of Education, Singapore is one of the leading teacher preparation institutions in the world. Travel video about destination Singapore. Singapore is a city of gardens and the heart of South East Asia. Its history began in 1819 with Thomas Stamford Raffles, a young official who worked for the British East India Company. Raffles estimated that the natural harbor was perfect for trading ships, so he bought the land from the Sultan of Johor and founded a trading settlement. As a free port, Singapore attracted trading ships from all over the world and today, 4 million people live here on an area that covers 640 square kilometres. In June each year, there is an exciting boat race in Marina Bay known as the Dragon Boat Race, that features magnificently painted dragon boats with hand-carved heads and tails accompanied by the sound of frenetic drumbeats. Dating back to colonial times, British influence is omnipresent, whether the Cricket Club or the Parliament, traditional English spirit rules despite Singapore's Independence. The World Famous Raffles Hotel is situated in the Colonial District near the Singapore River. In the hotel's Ashanti Bar, it was customary to throw expired peanut shells directly onto the floor and at the same time, reverently sip a Singapore Sling, the national drink. The Singapore Zoo is one of the finest in the world in which the animals can roam freely, their territory being surrounded by a landscaped ditch. Approximately 2,800 animals live in the spacious enclosures and even those from the world's coldest regions can be observed both below and above water, thanks to cleverly designed viewing areas. A complete mix of ethnic cultures, there's Chinatown, Little India and the Arab Street Quarter in which there are mosques, women wear burqas and there is all the hustle and bustle of a bazaar. Singapore is an exotic city of skyscrapers, a cultural melting pot and the exciting gateway to South East Asia!

Peter Dobbie presents this BBC World breaking news story, recorded at 0600hrs SGT on 23 Mar 2015. Lee Kuan Yew, the statesman who transformed Singapore from a small port city into a wealthy global hub, has died at the age of 91. The announcement was made "with deep sorrow" by the press secretary of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Mr Lee's son. The following news article is reproduced from the BBC News online website @ http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-32012346 Another later edition of the BBC World's continuing live coverage, recorded at 0700hrs SGT on 23 Mar 2015 is available @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b5LjWRFmHY&feature;=youtu.be Check out also "2015 - BBC World Special - A Richer World: Singapore at 50 - From Swamps to Skyscrapers - 1/3/15" @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShHakZOV2Tc&feature;=gp-n-o&google;_comment_id=z13fxh2o5mi4u3qt023uz3pyvprhshqpv04 Mr Lee served as the city-state's prime minister for 31 years, and continued to work in government until 2011. Highly respected as the architect of Singapore's prosperity, Mr Lee was also criticised for his iron grip on power. Under him freedom of speech was tightly restricted and political opponents were targeted by the courts. "The prime minister is deeply grieved to announce the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the founding prime minister of Singapore," his office said in a statement. Mr Lee died peacefully at Singapore General Hospital at 03:18 local time on Monday (19:18 GMT on Sunday), it said. He had been in hospital for several weeks with severe pneumonia. Over the weekend, people left tributes and messages of goodwill at the hospital as his condition deteriorated. Meanwhile Goh Chok Tong, a former prime minister, said: "He was my leader, mentor, inspiration, the man I looked up to most." Mr Lee, a Cambridge-educated lawyer, led Singapore through merger with, and then separation from, Malaysia - something that he described as a "moment of anguish". So we had to produce something which is different and better than what they have." Tight controls Mr Lee set about creating a highly-educated work force fluent in English, and reached out to foreign investors to turn Singapore into a manufacturing hub. The city-state grew wealthy and later developed into a major financial centre. But building a nation came with tight controls - and one of Mr Lee's legacies was a clampdown on the press. These restrictions remain today. In 2014, Singapore stood at 150 in the Reports Without Borders World Press Freedom Index, below countries like Russia, Myanmar and Zimbabwe. Dissent - and political opponents - were ruthlessly quashed. Today, Mr Lee's PAP remains firmly in control. There are currently six opposition lawmakers in parliament. Other measures, such as corporal punishment, a ban on chewing gum and the government's foray into matchmaking for Singapore's brightest - to create smarter babies - led to perceptions of excessive state interference. But Mr Lee remained unmoved. "Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in him. Or give it up," he told a rally in 1980. "I've spent a whole lifetime building this and as long as I'm in charge, nobody is going to knock it down."

This landmark documentary film by Paul Elston tells the incredible story of how it was the British who gave the Japanese the knowhow to take out Pearl Harbor and capture Singapore in the World War 2. For 19 years before the fall of Singapore in 1942 to the Japanese, British officers were spying for Japan. Worse still, the Japanese had infiltrated the very heart of the British establishment - through a mole who was a peer of the realm known to Churchill himself. This is a very rare documentary on the fall of Singapore in WW2 by BBC Two broadcasted in Northern Ireland only. http://youtu.be/TMPIAGkcOyk Love In Singapore is a 2009 Malayalam movie by Rafi Mecartin which had Mammootty in the lead role. Story: The movie stars Mammootty as Machu, an orphan who became rich by selling scrap. The prime location for the film is in a large hall at a bottle recycling factory in Kochi. Machu starts off rather humbly but soon gets rich. Now his scrap business has branches all over India. Machu, who is uneducated, keeps a low profile and prefers to hang out with his two friends, Shukkoor (Salim Kumar) and Narayanan (Bijukuttan). His life changes when Andrews Perreira (Nedumudi Venu), an Anglo Indian investor cheats machu into investing all his wealth into Perreira's investment company. Perreira acts as if he tried to commit suicide to give his investment fraud a lively touch. The innocent investors, including Machu, believe this and forgive Perreira, believing it wasn't his fault. The movie takes a wild turn when Machu meets Perreira's daughter, Diana, and wishes to marry her. But Perreira betrays Machu again by interchanging his daughter with his neighbour's daughter, an old friend of Machu's. On the wedding day, all falls apart as Machu and his friends goes to confront Perreira for his crimes, but Perreira with his daughter had already escaped to Singapore. Then the movie goes into utter humour as Machu and his sidekick (Jayasurya) tries to locate Perreira and Diana in Singapore. Tamil and Telugu actor Navneet Kaur is the heroine. She plays the role of Perreira’s daughter, Diana. "The character comes from a rich family and has lived in Singapore. So we decided to go for someone who looks cosmopolitan," says the director duo[1] regarding their choice. Apart from Kochi, the other locations for Love in Singapore are at Karaikudi and Singapore. Once in a long while in the history of a people, there comes a moment of great change. We begin a new chapter in the history of Singapore. The future is what we make of it. This is not a game of cards. This is your life and mine. I am not here to play somebody else's game. I have a few million people's lives to account for. What guided me were reason and reality. You know the Singaporean. He is a hard-working, industrious, rugged individual. Or we would not have made the grade. If I have to choose one word to explain why Singapore succeeded, it is ‘confidence’. The world keeps changing and so must we. ONCE IN A LONG WHILE IN THE HISTORY OF A PEOPLE, THERE COMES A MOMENT OF GREAT CHANGE. Tonight is such a moment in our lives … WE BEGIN A NEW CHAPTER IN THE HISTORY OF SINGAPORE. The powers of the people through their elected government is limited to our internal affairs. It is not what we really want. It is but a step forward towards merger and Merdeka. THE FUTURE IS WHAT WE MAKE OF IT. We owe it to ourselves to give of our best to build the foundations of a harmonious and integrated nation, peaceful, prosperous and vigilant, a haven of tolerance, harmony and progress in the stormy seas of Southeast Asia. I am nobody's stooge. I AM NOT HERE TO PLAY SOMEBODY ELSE'S GAME. I HAVE A FEW MILLION PEOPLE'S LIVES TO ACCOUNT FOR. And Singapore will survive, will trade with the whole world, and will remain non-Communist. IF I HAVE TO CHOOSE ONE WORD TO EXPLAIN WHY SINGAPORE SUCCEEDED, IT IS 'CONFIDENCE'. I am often accused of interfering in the private lives of citizens. Yes, if I did not, had I not done that, we wouldn't be here today. YOU KNOW THE SINGAPOREAN. HE IS A HARD-WORKING, INDUSTRIOUS, RUGGED INDIVIDUAL. OR WE WOULD NOT HAVE MADE THE GRADE. Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in him. Or give it up. THIS IS NOT A GAME OF CARDS. THIS IS YOUR LIFE AND MINE.I’ve spent a whole lifetime building this and as long as I’m in charge, nobody is going to knock it down. If there was one formula for success, it was that we were constantly studying how to make things work, or how to make them work better. I was never a prisoner of any theory. WHAT GUIDED ME WERE REASON AND REALITY. Singapore has climbed from the Third World to the First. But the work is never finished. THE WORLD KEEPS CHANGING AND SO MUST WE.

Former Control Yuan President Frederick Chien, who joined President Ma Ying-jeou in attending the wake of Singapore founder Lee Kuan Yew, says Ma was treated with the utmost respect. Chien took issue with opposition lawmakers who criticized Ma for conducting the trip in a secretive manner designed to avoid upsetting China. Chien became upset when discussing criticism over the secretive nature of Ma’s Singapore trip. He said the arrangements were based on an understanding between Taiwan and Singapore. Frederick ChienFormer Control Yuan PresidentWithin 32 hours of Mr. Lee’s death, our plane departed for Singapore. Once the trip was completed, it could be revealed. But an announcement beforehand would anger China and cause problems for Singapore.Chien said Singapore showed the utmost respect from the moment the plane arrived.Frederick ChienFormer Control Yuan PresidentWhen we got out of the car, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was waiting to greet us at the door. He was very courteous. His hospitality showed the importance he places on our relationship.Chien said the group met other government officials. Besides giving Ma a chance to pay respects to an old friend, Chien believes the trip benefited Taiwan-Singapore relations.

Fox News 2015-04-03Singapore (i/ˈsɪŋəpɔər/ SI-ngə-pohr), officially the Republic of Singapore, is a Southeast Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator. An island country made up of 63 islands, it is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. Singapore is highly urbanised but almost half of the country is covered by greenery. More land is being created for development through land reclamation.
At my place and I was on the phone
But it's you that I'll always call my home
In a world where the sun don't always shine
I can see tropicana in your eyes
When you're gone, my loneliness is real
Got your love to remind me how to feel
In my head I can see a long goodbye
You kiss my lips as I try to fix your tie
And I
I'm watching daytime TV
Just wishing you were with me
I'm counting hours and day
Gotta stop believing what the movies say
Dark streets only suffocate me
Now you're off to Singapore
Heartaches - God, it nearly breaks me
Ciao, I'm waiting for your call
Dark streets only suffocate me
Now you're off to Singapore
Heartaches - God, it nearly breaks me
Ciao, I'm waiting for your call
Please means more
I'll see you knocking at the door
Got it right in my place
Cos dreams means five
And I'll be rocking on the floor
Can't you see it in my face?
Please means more
I'll see you knocking at the door
Got it right in my place
Cos dreams means five
And I'll be rocking on the floor
Can't you see it in my face?
And some nights,
When we're sat on the phone
And kind of broken
Never ever thought
I'd let you go again
Thats the way I feel
Your all the love I need
Dark streets only suffocate me
Now you're off to Singapore
Heartaches - God, it nearly breaks me
Ciao, I'm waiting for your call
Dark streets only suffocate me
Now you're off to Singapore
Heartaches - God, it nearly breaks me
Stroke 1 `cos he sprayed a car they say give him the cane
Sovereignity always goes too far and causes too much pain
Stroke 4 live from Singapore they beat him till he`s raw
Stroke 4 live from Singapore don`t do it no more
Stroke 2 `cos his hair`s too long like Jesus nailed to wood
It`s obvious that is wrong and it does no good
Stroke 4 live from Singapore they beat him till he`s raw
Stroke 4 live from Singapore don`t do it no more
Stroke 3 `cos he chewed some gum and left it on the ground
This struck me as really dumb there`s still some brutes around
Stroke 4 live from Singapore they beat him till he`s raw
Stroke 4 live from Singapore don`t do it no more
Think of the other nine hundred ninety nine
I`m sorry it had to happen but there will come a time
For the other nine hundred ninety nine
Stroke 4 live from Singapore they beat him till he`s raw
Stroke 4 live from Singapore don`t do it no more
Stroke 4 live from Singapore they beat him till he`s raw
Stroke 4 live from Singapore don`t do it no more
Stroke 4 live from Singapore they beat him till he`s raw
Stroke 4 live from Singapore don`t do it no more
Stroke 4 live from Singapore they beat him till he`s raw
Stroke 4 live from Singapore don`t do it no more
Stroke 4 live from Singapore they left him with a scar
We sail tonight for Singapore
We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
Took off to the land of Nod
Drank with all the Chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I danced along a colored wind
Dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me
We sail tonight for Singapore
Don't fall asleep while you're ashore
Cross your heart and hope to die
When you hear the children cry
Let marrow bone and cleaver choose
While making feet for children shoes
Through the alley
Back from Hell
When you hear that steeple bell
You must say goodbye to me
Wipe him down with gasoline
Till his arms are hard and mean
From now on boys this iron boat's your home
So heave away boys
We sail tonight for Singapore
Take your blankets from the floor
Wash your mouth out by the door
The whole town is made of iron ore
Every witness turns to steam
They all become Italian dreams
Fill your pockets up with earth
Get yourself a dollar's worth
Away boys, away boys, heave away
The captain is a one-armed dwarf
He's throwing dice along the wharf
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King
So take this ring
We sail tonight for Singapore
We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
Took off to the land of Nod
Drank with all the Chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I danced along a colored wind
Dangled from a rope of sand
