And here is my all time favorite mystery guest appearance (though I'm severely biased as a huge fan of George and Gracie). So absolutely charming, and especially a treat since Gracie made very few appearances on TV outside of their own show. Description.
This is a particularly interesting episode, in part for the truly wonderful MG segment with George Burns where he gets FOUR FULL MINUTES afterwards to be funny. It was a rarity for mystery guests to stick around at all after the game was over, but the amount of time George gets here may be unparalleled. The other reason this show is unique is that Mr. Daly is acting very, very strange throughout the entire program. I won't offer my particular speculation on the cause of this behavior, but I think anyone who knows the show well would agree that this is not the usual John Charles Daly we're seeing here! MYSTERY GUEST: George Burns PANEL: Arlene Francis, Martin Gabel, Dorothy Kilgallen, Bennett Cerf Yet another episode I would not have been able to post without epaddon contributing it. Many, many thanks again. ---------------------- If you're on Facebook, don't miss our WML group-- it's truly a wonderful group of folks.
This is an unusual 60 minute special starring George Burns from Jun 7, 1960, in full color. Guest stars include Jack Benny, Bobby Darrin, Betty Grable, Polly Bergen, and the Hermes Pan Dancers. Unfortunately, I can't find *any* information for this show online-- it's not even listed on the imdb. I don't even remember where I got the date for the show from, and I can't verify it at this point.

It's ten minutes before airtime and Gracie Allen is nowhere to be found. George Burns talks Jack into dressing in drag and passing himself off as Gracie. Makeup man Frank Nelson quickly works on Jack and Don Wilson contributes one of his girdles. The Sportsmen also crowd into the dressing room to do the Lucky commercial to the tune of "Black Ball Ferry Line". A fetching Jack performs with George in one of their standard stand-up routines. Easily-confused Gracie finally arrives, doesn't realize George's partner was Jack, and thinks her husband's been fooling around with another woman--namely Tallulah Bankhead. Benny decides he's pretty good looking as a woman

George Burns (January 20, 1896 – March 9, 1996), born Naftaly Birnbaum, was an American comedian, actor, and writer.
He was one of the few entertainers whose career successfully spanned vaudeville, film, radio, and television. His arched eyebrow and cigar smoke punctuation became familiar trademarks for over three quarters of a century. Beginning at the age of 79, Burns' career was resurrected as an amiable, beloved and unusually active old comedian, continuing to work until shortly before his death, in 1996, at the age of 100.
Naftaly (late called Nathan) Birnbaum was the ninth of 12 children born to Louis and Dorah (nèe Bluth) Birnbaum, Jewish immigrants who had come to the United States from Romania. Burns was an active member of the First Roumanian-American congregation. His father was a substitute cantor at the local synagogue but usually worked as a coat presser. During the influenza epidemic of 1903, Lippe Birnbaum contracted the flu and died at the age of 47. Nattie (as he was then called) went to work to help support the family, shining shoes, running errands, and selling newspapers.
Bob Hope, KBE, KCSG, KSS (born Leslie Townes Hope; May 29, 1903 – July 27, 2003) was an English-born American comedian and actor who appeared in vaudeville, on Broadway, and in radio, television and movies. He was also noted for his work with the US Armed Forces and his numerous USO shows entertaining American military personnel. Throughout his long career, he was honored for his humanitarian work. In 1996, the U.S. Congress honored Bob Hope by declaring him the "first and only honorary veteran of the U.S. armed forces." Bob Hope appeared in or hosted 199 known USO shows.
Hope was born in Eltham, London, England, the fifth of seven sons. His English father, William Henry Hope, was a stonemason from Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, and his Welsh mother, Avis Townes, was a light opera singer from Barry who later worked as a cleaning woman. She married William Hope in April 1891 and the couple set up home at 12 Greenwood Street in the town, then moved to Whitehall and St George in Bristol, before eventually moving to Cleveland, Ohio in 1908. The family emigrated to the United States aboard the SS Philadelphia, and passed inspection at Ellis Island on March 30, 1908. Hope became a U.S. citizen in 1920 at the age of 17. In a 1942 legal document, Hope's legal name is given as Lester Townes Hope. His name on the Social Security Index is also listed as Lester T. Hope. His name as registered at birth was Leslie Towns [sic] Hope.
Donald Jay "Don" Rickles (born May 8, 1926) is an American stand-up comedian and actor. A frequent guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Rickles has acted in comedic and dramatic roles, but is best known as an insult comic.
Rickles was born in the New York City borough of Queens to Max Rickles, who had emigrated in 1902 with his parents Joseph and Frances Rickles from Kaunas, Lithuania (then in the Russian Empire), and Etta (Feldman) Rickles, born in New York to immigrant parents from the Austrian Empire. His family was Jewish and spoke Yiddish at home. Rickles grew up in the Jackson Heights area.
After graduating from Newtown High School, Rickles enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II on the USS Cyrene as a seaman first class. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Two years later, he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and then played bit parts on television. Frustrated by a lack of acting work, Rickles began doing stand-up comedy. He became known as an insult comedian by responding to his hecklers. The audience enjoyed these insults more than his prepared material, and he incorporated them into his act. When he began his career in the early 1950s he started calling ill-mannered members of the audience a "hockey puck". His style was similar to an older insult comic, "Mr. Warmth" Jack E. Leonard, though Rickles denies that Leonard influenced his style.
