http://democracynow.org - Video has surfaced showing militants from the Islamic State destroying ancient artifacts at a museum in the Iraqi city of Mosul. Men are seen toppling statues and using sledgehammers and drills to destroy the artifacts. The Guardian reports one of the statues destroyed was a winged-bull Assyrian protective deity that dates back to the 9th century B.C. The Islamic State has also reportedly destroyed the Mosul public library, which housed more than 8,000 rare books and manuscripts. On Thursday, UNESCO, the cultural arm of the United Nations, called for the U.N. Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on protecting Iraq's cultural heritage. "I condemn this as a deliberate attack against Iraq's millennial history and culture, and as an inflammatory incitement to violence and hatred," said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova. We speak to Zainab Bahrani, professor of Near Eastern and East Mediterranean art and archeology at Columbia University. She has worked extensively in Iraq, including periods as senior adviser to Iraq's Ministry of Culture and a UNESCO consultant. Now the big questions around the connection between Islam and terror. Last month President Obama came under fire for referring to violent extremism. Without any mention of Islam. And now a provocative new book is taking that growing controversy. Head on. I yon. Kirstie Alley has become one of islam's most prominent critics panning for controversial books in ten years. Born into a Muslim family in Somalia who raised in Kenya she fled Africa at 22 after being subjected to female genital mutilation. And narrowly escaping an arranged marriage it was later in 2002. That she broke from Islam becoming an atheist and beginning to speak out against the faith. Demanding better treatment of women in charging too many Muslims were in the grip of Jihad. All of that violence. You come along the deposit from the conventional insulin that kind of rhetoric landed her CLE and al-Qaeda is most wanted list. But that hasn't silenced her her new book heretic calls for reforms to the fate she left behind. But many Muslims say that change is already happening from an all Omar is one of them. A prominent author and activist and regarded as one of the world's most influential voices on Islamic culture. She's devoted her career to promoting tolerance and peace from with in her face. And I'm joined now by ion Hurst C Alley and an all Omar. Welcome. I don't I want to start with you. On your argument is that it's foolish to insist as our leaders habitually do you write that the violent acts of radical islamists can be divorced from the religious ideals that inspire them Islam. It Islam is not a religion of peace. Islam under phones today is not happy agent off peace and in the book I make. A distinction between let's say three sets of Muslims and they itemize them Medina Muslims America Muslims and the dissidents who wants to can farm. And then mid dean of Muslims those Muslims who apply. Anything and everything that the Prophet Mohammed did. Often he emigrated to Medina and they apply the Quran literally so it's groups like ices the Taliban etc. But there's a huge group of Muslims I think they're the largest number. Cool I call Obama met come Muslims who he's slugging and taxes only that his foot of peaceful parts of their religion. And then that those who want to hear from the heat and the funny so the tactics. And it's it's extremely important today. Put the Medina was eons to news we want the dissidents to convince them that come was in such large contingent of people. To reform their religion from within church you really be the ports for that. I think that Everett auto not a believer anymore all of us who are born into Islam. The minute we sides to connect its highs of the agent from within when illegal tactics up plus states with condemned to death and I think. Change is not going to come from the clerics change is going to come from the heck ticks that's why I'm speaking up. You are trying to make changes as well you believe there should be some reform now is is she the right spokesperson for this I think that approach I think the authenticity of the message is very important I think the challenges if you've been on record attacking Islam or trying to marginalize those who have a voice believing in peaceful Islam. And it's very hard for you to be able to call Warner reform of Islam. I think it's happening I would actually argue that the very creation of Islam from day one.
Extremism is not restricted to Muslims but is equally prevalent today among Jews, Christians, Hindus, and Secularists. Among Muslims and others, extremism is a peripheral, albeit perilous phenomenon. Within all groups, it is represented by different camps. It takes on different forms of expression, diverse responses, and is neither internally nor externally monolithic. Nevertheless, some generalizations are possible regarding the phenomenon in today's globalised world.Muslim extremists and their Jewish, Christian, Hindu, and Secular counterparts have several features in common. They identify strongly with charismatic leaders, are communalistic, and thrive on a strong "we-feeling" based around their leadership. Their worldviews are black-and-white and sharply dichotomous; they foster unquestioned allegiance to the group and antipathy toward the Other. "Globalised" religious extremists are generally anti-intellectual and anti-theological in a traditional sense. They are averse to the "higher" tradition of their faith, although they justify their innovations through selective retrieval from tradition and atypical interpretations of revelatory texts. The personal religiosity of religious extremists is primarily individualistic and experiential; it roots itself in a sectarian sense of solidarity with the group and the "we-versus-them-feeling" that it inspires. Today's extremists adopt an idealistic (ahistorical) picture of the past and apocalyptic vision of the future, which lies at the base of their social and political strategies. They have a sharp sense of immediate crisis engendered by the modern world, yet utilize its most advanced technologies—generally with great sophistication—to execute their ends."Islamic Extremism in the Context of Globalism" concludes with a search for solutions. All the three essential elements of extremism—grievances, ideology, and social psychology—must be effectively addressed. It is a grave mistake, however, to regard globalized religion as we know it as something unique to our age. Similar developments have happened before in the history of world religions when powerful political and economic realities—as in the Roman Empire—amalgamated vastly diverse ethnic and religious groups in a unified world system. Such precedents provide insight for the future. One of these is that the religious and secular extremisms we face today must be treated as essentially default positions in the absence of satisfactory alternatives. As Muslims, we are required to restate Islam's Middle Way as embodied in mainstream Islamic culture and civilization over the centuries. Our vision of the Middle Way must be authentic, articulate, and fully relevant to the pluralistic realities of the global age. But abstract formulations of worldviews are never effective in the abstract; they need human faces that embody them in the eyes of the people like the movements of Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela. Merely giving directions to the Middle Way is not enough; our communities must cultivate and bring to the forefront a generation of charismatic men and women who embody that path and are role models for others. This presentation is brought to you by The Radical Middle Way25th November 2006, Birmingham Central Mosque, BirminghamSpeaker : Dr. Umar Faruq AbdAllah[radicalmiddleway.co.uk/events.php?id=2&art=113]

Mughal India developed a strong and stable economy, leading to commercial expansion and greater patronage of culture. Akbar himself was a patron of art and culture. He was fond of literature, and created a library of over 24,000 volumes written in Sanskrit, Hindustani, Persian, Greek, Latin, Arabic and Kashmiri, staffed by many scholars, translators, artists, calligraphers, scribes, bookbinders and readers. Holy men of many faiths, poets, architects and artisans adorned his court from all over the world for study and discussion. Akbar's courts at Delhi, Agra, and Fatehpur Sikri became centers of the arts, letters, and learning. Perso-Islamic culture began to merge and blend with indigenous Indian elements, and a distinct Indo-Persian culture emerged characterised by Mughal style arts, painting, and architecture. Disillusioned with orthodox Islam and perhaps hoping to bring about religious unity within his empire, Akbar promulgated Din-i-Ilahi, a syncretic creed derived from Islam, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, and Christianity. A simple, monotheistic cult, tolerant in outlook, it centered on Akbar as a prophet, for which he drew the ire of the ulema and orthodox Muslims
Video excerpt of Dr. Nalliah being interviewed on Australian television about the political party he started called Rise Up Australia (RUA) Party - Multiculturalism is discussed for the evil weapon that it is; to silence the voice of God and His Word from being the light for a nation - Multiculturalism is a tool used by fundamental Muslims to force the host nation not to discriminate against Islam and to accept Sharia law - Europe has gone into decline since they instituted multiculturalism because of Muslim threats of discrimination law suits for the disallowance of their culture - Admitting the Islamic culture means allowing Shariah law, four wives, 12 year old brides and female mutilation - France has over 700 Shariah law zones Where a white person cannot enter without being beaten - Great Britain has more than 80 Shariah courts and allows Muslim men to collect welfare payments for four wives and their children - The western birth rate is below the level needed to sustain native culture, while Islamic culture birthrate is exploding - Estimates predict Europe as being Islamic in about 30 years - Dr. Nalliah and RUA are advising the Australian government to stop using the term multiculturalism and begin to use multiethnic instead. The current Prime Minister followed that advice - Nazism and communism are man-made ideologies whereas Islam claims that Allah commands Muslims to dominate the world - Several verses from the Qu'ran are displayed showing that Muslims must make war on unbelievers - Dr. Nalliah shares his testimony of the Lord using him to raise a Buddhist girl from the dead and then leading 60 Buddhists to Jesus as their Savior after casting out the demon of death from the resurrected girl.

Irene Schneider(Göttingen): Irene Schneider: The Islamic legal culture as a "religious validity culture"? - the Iranian discourse about international law Validity cultures: A new concept? (Chair: Joachim Savelsberg) In the context of the conference: The normative complex: Legal cultures, validity cultures and normativities 9. & 10. April 2014 | Conference Room 2 in the Rohmühle | Rheinwerkallee 2 | 53227 Bonn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Irene Schneider (Göttingen): ... Further information will follow soon. ... Since March 2014, Irene Schneider is fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities "Law as Culture". Joachim Savelsberg (Minneapolis/Bonn): Sociologist. Professor at the Department of Sociology of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities "Law as Culture" Werner Gephart (Bonn): Legal scholar, sociologist and artist. Professor of Sociology at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University Bonn, founder and director of the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities "Law as Culture", editor of the volume "Recht" of the Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe (MWG I/22-3) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conference: The normative complex: Legal cultures, validity cultures and normativities It is no exaggeration to speak of the rediscovery of the normative dimension of social life. Although for Talcott Parsons, the normative solution of the order problem should at least offer some orientation in the confusing field of social theory, numerous approaches taken by social and cultural sciences did not dwell on this discourse. Likewise, newer culture-theoretical access points also take scant notice of the world of law and normativity. Meanwhile, a need to deal with the basic question of the normative world anew and in novel ways is growing within the traditional disciplines dealing with questions pertaining to the normative-legal shaping of the world, i.e. jurisprudence, legal philosophy, legal theory, and also legal history. The reason that calls for heightened attention to be paid to the "realm of the normative", as Foucault called it, is apparent: Normative weight is shifting from the nation state to transnational spaces of law and validity. Simply put, the reason can be found in processes of globalization. The simultaneous increase in personal orders of validity rekindles culturally shaped minority laws and thereby heightens the potential that encounters of legal cultures do not only end in dialog, but also in conflict. The issue of familiarizing oneself with the world of norms of the other is then not simply a question of moral recognition but a precondition for intercultural communication through the medium of law. Cognitive competencies over legal-cultural idiosyncrasies and differences are therefore not only a matter of import for specialists or for legal training, but also for economic or political actors and further also for successful daily behavior. ... - TBC - more on: http://www.recht-als-kultur.de/en/activities/conferences-and-workshops.2/conference-the-normative-complex-legal-cultures-validity-cultures-and-normativities.107/ ______________________________________________________ www.law-as-culture.com - www.recht-als-kultur.de
Growing condemnation of Islamic State Nimrud destruction (BBC, March 7, 2015) http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-31777696 "There is growing international condemnation of Islamic State for what's feared to be the destruction of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud, one of the world's most important historical sites. According to officials in Iraq, the militants are looting the area before bulldozing the numerous shrines and statues dating back three thousand years. The head of the UN's cultural agency condemned the "systematic" destruction in Iraq as a "war crime" Serena Chaudhry reports." Nimrud: Outcry as IS bulldozers attack ancient Iraq site (BBC, March 6, 2015) http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-31760656 "Archaeologists and officials have expressed outrage about the bulldozing of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud by Islamic State militants in Iraq. IS began demolishing the site, which was founded in the 13th Century BC, on Thursday, according to Iraqi officials. The head of the UN's cultural agency condemned the "systematic" destruction in Iraq as a "war crime". IS, which controls large areas of Iraq and Syria, says shrines and statues are "false idols" that have to be smashed. "They are erasing our history," said Iraqi archaeologist Lamia al-Gailani." Some of the world's most precious cultural treasures, including ancient sites in the cradle of civilization, are in areas controlled by the group and at the mercy of extremists bent on wiping out all non-Islamic culture and history. The rampage, targeting priceless cultural artifacts often spanning thousands of years, has sparked global outrage and accusations of war crimes. The militants are also believed to be selling ancient artifacts on the black market in order to finance their bloody campaign across the region.
