Sea ice acts as an air conditioner for the planet, reflecting energy from the Sun. On September 17, the Arctic sea ice reached its minimum extent for 2014. At 1.94 million square miles (5.02 million square kilometers), it’s the sixth lowest extent of the satellite record. With warmer temperatures and thinner, less resilient ice, the Arctic sea ice is on a downward trend.

KEGS Presents: The Arctic Sea – where are we headed? (2015-01-13)
The shrinking Arctic sea ice cover is often taken as one of the most prominent indicators of recent climate change, and its early, complete disappearance seems almost inevitable in the public debate, spawning speculations about the opening of northern shipping routes and resource exploration, as well as about the extinction of polar bears and the collapse of Arctic food-webs. However, little is actually understood about the recent rapid sea ice changes in the Arctic, and climate models continue to predict sea ice changes with little skill.
This presentation by Christian Haas, professor and Canada Research Chair in Arctic Sea Ice Geophysics at York University, provides a status of observed sea ice changes in the Arctic and Antarctic. Professor Haas discusses some of the uncertainties related to changes of the sea ice mass balance. It focuses on results of geophysics and remote sensing research with regard to Arctic sea ice, particularly results from airborne and snowmobile-based ice thickness surveying. These use the geophysical method of frequency-domain electromagnetic induction sounding and are ideally suited for mapping different sea ice conditions characterized by distinct layers with different conductivities.
Results show large regional sea ice variability in the Canadian Arctic which represent different environmental conditions and prevents easy, general predictions of future ice conditions.
Recorded at the Canadian Exploration Geophysical Society (KEGS) on Jan 13, 2015.

Seven Surprising Results from the Reduction of Arctic Sea Ice Cover | David Barber | TEDxUManitoba
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. It is now well known that sea ice in the Arctic has changed in both extent and thickness over the past several decades. In fact the change in sea ice is seen as one of the key global climate variables confirming model estimates of global scale warming of our planet through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) process. Extensive investigations at the leading edge of Arctic System Science have recently uncovered a number of surprises, many somewhat counterintuitive, each having significant consequences in the Arctic and through teleconnections to the rest of our planet. In this talk I will review the rate and magnitude of change in sea ice, put this into the context of our understanding of the ‘natural variability’ in sea ice over the past several thousand years. I will then review seven surprising impacts of this change: 1) increasing coverage of young ice significantly changes atmospheric chemistry; 2) more snow both preserves and destroys ice; 3) Polar bear habitat can actually improve in some areas while deteriorating in others; 4) match-mismatch timing in the marine ecosystem increases vulnerability; 5) uncertainty as to whether the Arctic ocean will increase or decrease in overall productivity is a key unknown; 6) evidence that ice hazards are actually increasing while the world marshals to increase development of Arctic resources; and 7) evidence that our recent cold winters are actually linked to our warming Arctic.
Dr. Barber obtained his Bachelors and Masters from the University of Manitoba, and his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. He was appointed to a faculty position at the University of Manitoba in 1993 and received a Canada Research Chair in Arctic System Science in 2002. He is currently Associate Dean (Research), CHR Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources. Dr. Barber has extensive experience in the examination of the Arctic marine environment as a ‘system’, and the effect climate change has on this system. Dr. Barber has published over 200 articles in the peer-reviewed literature pertaining to sea ice, climate change and physical-biological coupling in the Arctic marine system. He led the largest International Polar Year project in the world, known as the Circumpolar Flaw Lead system study. He is recognized internationally through scientific leadership in large network programs such as NOW, CASES, ArcticNet, and the Canadian Research Icebreaker (Amundsen), as an invited member of several Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council national committees, international committees and invitations to national and international science meetings. Dr. Barber was instrumental in a national competition to bring a Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) to the University of Manitoba in the field of Arctic Geomicrobiology and Climate Change. As a member of the Centre for Earth Observation Science he leads a polar marine science group of over 100 people

The perennial ice is the portion of the sea ice floating on the surface of the ocean that survives the summer. This ice that spans multiple years represents the thickest component of the sea ice cover.
This visualization shows the perennial Arctic sea ice from 1979 to 2014. A graph overlay shows the area's size measured in million square kilometers for each year.

Nature's Great Events Ep 1 - The Great Melt / Arctic Summer
The opening episode shows how different species respond to the annual summer thaw of sea ice in the Arctic. The extent of the melt has been increasing in recent times, and this could be disastrous for polar bears. A mother emerges from her winter den with cubs, and leads them on to the sea ice to hunt. As the ice breaks up, the bears have difficulty walking and resort to swimming between floes. For others, it's a race to breed in the short summer season. When guillemots arrive at their nesting cliffs, the rocks are still cloaked in ice. A few short weeks later, the young launch themselves on their maiden flights, but those that crash before t

US gives Shell approval to recommence Arctic drilling
US data estimates that the country’s Arctic seas contain 22 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 26 trillion cubic metres of natural gas. When oil and gas giant, Shell, last tried its hand at Arctic drilling, in 2012, it was forced to abandon its operations after an oil rig ran aground.
Now, however, the US government has given Shell approval to begin drilling again.
Environmental groups such as the Natural Resources Defence Council believe that drilling in the Arctic is more dangerous than in the Mexican Gulf, because the technology doesn't exist to clean up a spill under ice and in such cold waters.

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama's administration on Monday approved petroleum giant Shell's request to drill for oil and gas in the Arctic under certain conditions, despite opposition from environmental groups.
The decision by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management granted Shell the right to explore the Chukchi Sea as long as the Anglo-Dutch firm gets the correct permits from the agencies that regulate the environment and marine mammal health.
"We have taken a thoughtful approach to carefully considering potential exploration in the Chukchi Sea," BOEM director Abigail Ross Hopper said.

Weathercasters: 2015 Arctic Sea Ice Maximum Annual Extent Is Lowest On Record (3/18/2015)
LEAD: Scientists say the 2015 Arctic sea ice maximum annual extent is lowest on record.
1. Observations from the NASA–supported National Snow and Ice Data Center indicate the winter sea ice has peaked at 5.6 million square miles, less than twice the size of the U.S.
2. The main player inhibiting growth are the warm winds from the south that compact the ice northward and also bring warm air that melts the ice.
3. The end of the winter ice growth season came two weeks earlier compared to the 1981 to 2010 average date.

A few short weeks later, the young launch themselves on their maiden flights, but those that crash before they reach open water present an easy meal for an Arctic fox mother and her cubs. Aerial footage shows the arrival of belugas and narwhals at the edge of the sea ice. The narwhals navigate their way along leads, but can become trapped if the ice ahead is still unbroken. In the height of summer, large parts of the Arctic Ocean are virtually ice-free, leaving some polar bears stranded on the few remaining icebergs. Those that reach dry land must wait for the winter ice to return before they can start hunting again. As the bears congregate, fights break out between the males.
Nature's Great Events Diaries follows the camera team's attempts to locate narwhals in "Quest for Ice Whales".

Prof Dame Julia Slingo on whether melting Arctic sea ice is influencing extreme weather
Prof Dame Julia Slingo has been the chief scientist at the Met Office since February 2009. Before joining the Met Office she was the director of climate research in NERC's National Centre for Atmospheric Science at the University of Reading.
In an interview with Carbon Brief, she gives her thoughts on Arctic amplification - the especially intense warming being experienced by the Arctic, which is is heating up at least twice as fast as the globe as a whole.

more at http://outdoor-gear.quickfound.net/
"This training film presents the viewer with a scenario in which a squadron of fighter planes took off for flight over arctic territory, and one of the pilots was forced down by engine trouble. The viewer learns how the pilot selected a landing spot, used a parachute for clothing and shelter, obtained food and firewood, and attempted to aid in his own rescue - all in snow and sub-zero temperature." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic
The Arctic (/ˈɑrktɪk/ or /ˈɑrtɪk/) is a polar region located at the northernmost part of the Earth. The Arctic consists of the Arctic Ocean and parts of Alaska (United States), Canada, Finland, Greenland (Denmark), Iceland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden. The Arctic region consists of a vast ocean with a seasonally varying ice cover, surrounded by treeless permafrost. The area can be defined as north of the Arctic Circle (66° 33'N), the approximate limit of the midnight sun and the polar night. Alternatively, it can be defined as the region where the average temperature for the warmest month (July) is below 10 °C (50 °F); the northernmost tree line roughly follows the isotherm at the boundary of this region.
Socially and politically, the Arctic region includes the northern territories of the eight Arctic states, although by natural science definitions much of this territory is considered subarctic. The Arctic region is a unique area among Earth's ecosystems. The cultures in the region and the Arctic indigenous peoples have adapted to its cold and extreme conditions. In recent years the extent of the sea ice has declined. Life in the Arctic includes organisms living in the ice, zooplankton and phytoplankton, fish and marine mammals, birds, land animals, plants and human societies...
The Arctic's climate is characterized by cold winters and cool summers. Precipitation mostly comes in the form of snow. The Arctic's annual precipitation is low, with most of the area receiving less than 50 cm (20 in). High winds often stir up snow, creating the illusion of continuous snowfall. Average winter temperatures can be as low as −40 °C (−40 °F), and the coldest recorded temperature is approximately −68 °C (−90 °F). Coastal Arctic climates are moderated by oceanic influences, having generally warmer temperatures and heavier snowfalls than the colder and drier interior areas. The Arctic is affected by current global warming, leading to Arctic sea ice shrinkage and Arctic methane release.
Due to the poleward migration of the planet's isotherms (about 35 mi (56 km) per decade during the past 30 years as a consequence of global warming), the Arctic region (as defined by tree line and temperature) is currently shrinking. Perhaps the most spectacular result of Arctic shrinkage is sea ice loss. There is a large variance in predictions of Arctic sea ice loss, with models showing near-complete to complete loss in September from 2040 to some time well beyond 2100. About half of the analyzed models show near-complete to complete sea ice loss in September by the year 2100...

The nearest Coast Guard station with equipment to respond to a spill is more than 1,600km away.
For its part, Shell has said, “this time will be different”, and that it will be subjecting itself to more rigorous safety standards.

"As we move forward, any offshore exploratory activities will continue to be subject to rigorous safety standards."
Environmental groups oppose drilling in the Arctic due to the vulnerability of animals that are already struggling with the melting sea ice and the risk that an oil spill would pose to the region.

This most recent 6.5M (now downgraded to a 6.2M) earthquake in the north Arctic -- east of Greenland --- Mid-Atlantic ridge --- Norwegian sea..... shows the movement picking up in pace.
Italy, Bulgaria, and south of Australia --- all areas we don't see too much earthquake activity..... plus add in the swarming of earthquakes NORTH of coast of Honsu (Hokkaido)... and add in the earthquake activity in South/Central America ---- we are on a heightened earthquake alert yet once again.
This seems to happen in cycles every month or so recently.... so be prepared for additional 6.0M to 8.0M earthquakes in the near future (two weeks or less around the ring of fire areas prone already ---- Japan, Baja, Oaxaca Mexico, off the coast of Oregeon... along the edge of the north American craton ---- too many areas to name almost.
Point being, we should all have a plan to be prepared in the eventuality of an earthquake occurring... even east coast USA and midwest USA --- as well as central south Europe still.

The Critical Omega-3:Omega-6 Balance
Unfortunately, many diets include unhealthy levels of Omega-6's which are traditionally derived from fried foods, vegetable oils, fake butter products, grain-fed animal fat and other modern convenience and processed foods. In addition, many diets are low in fish and Omega-3 consumption, which creates an unhealthy ratio of Omega-6: Omega-3 as high as 30:1! The key to getting back to a healthy ratio of DHA:EPA is increasing Omega-3 consumption and reducing Omega-6 intake.

TAG: The past decades have seen a downward trend in Arctic sea ice during the winter and summer, although, the trend is decreasing faster for the summer melt.

NASA| Arctic sea ice reaches 2014 minimum extent

Ghost Ship - The mystery of the MV Arctic Sea
Ghost Ship - The mystery of the MV Arctic Sea
Dateline video journalist Nick Lazaredes has an international tale of intrigue that's worthy of a spy novel...with links pointing right back to the Kremlin.
It concerns a nondescript Maltese cargo vessel called the MV Arctic Sea, which was reportedly hijacked off Sweden and later disappeared.
But if it was really carrying nothing more than a load of Finnish timber, why was the Russian Navy sent to find it?
Could Israeli forces have intercepted it, concerned that weapons on board were being taken from Russia to the Middle East to be used against them?
And how did it end up off Cape Verde in West Africa, when it should have been heading for Algeria?
Award winning Video journalist, Nick Lazaredes attempts to uncover the answers to this modern maritime mystery.

Mary Shelley's http://frangkestein.blogspot.com/ Frankenstein is a 1994 American horror film. The story begins in the year 1794. Captain Walton is leading a daring, but troubled, expedition to reach the North Pole, even as his crew is threatening to mutiny. While their ship is trapped in the ice of the Arctic Sea, Walton and his crew discover a man traveling across the Arctic on his own. In the distance, a loud moaning can be heard. When the man sees how obsessed Walton is with reaching the North Pole, he asks, "Do you share my madness?" The man then reveals that his name is Victor Frankenstein and begins his tale.t.

Nature's Great Events Ep 1 - The Great Melt / Arctic Summer

In an interview with Carbon Brief, she gives her thoughts on Arctic amplification - the especially intense warming being experienced by the Arctic, which is is heating up at least twice as fast as the globe as a whole.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic
