The broader history of the Roman Empire is the period after the Roman Republic. It extends through 16 centuries and includes several stages in the evolution of the Roman state. It encompasses the period of the ancient Roman Empire, the period in which it was divided into western and eastern halves, and the history of the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire that continued through the Middle Ages and to the beginning of the Modern Era.

The rise and fall of Rome from its founding as a city to the fall of Constantinople.
It only takes one person to make a difference and fewer than four years to wreak carnal havoc on the Roman Empire. Through Caligula: 1400 Days of Terror, this documentary explores the orgies, incest and murderous acts of the 28-year-old reigning lunatic's life. "Caligula" (Latin: Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus;) was the popular nickname of Gaius (31 August 12 AD -- 22 January 41 AD), Roman emperor from 37 AD to 41 AD. Caligula was a member of the house of rulers conventionally known as the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Caligula's father Germanicus, the nephew and adopted son of Emperor Tiberius, was a very successful general and one of Rome's most beloved public figures. The young Gaius earned the nickname Caligula (meaning "little soldier's boot", the diminutive form of caliga, hob-nailed military boot) from his father's soldiers while accompanying him during his campaigns in Germania. When Germanicus died at Antioch in 19 AD, his wife Agrippina the Elder returned to Rome with her six children where she became entangled in an increasingly bitter feud with Tiberius. This conflict eventually led to the destruction of her family, with Caligula as the sole male survivor. Unscathed by the deadly intrigues, Caligula accepted the invitation to join the emperor on the island of Capri in 31 AD, where Tiberius himself had withdrawn five years earlier. With the death of Tiberius in 37 AD, Caligula succeeded his great uncle and adoptive grandfather. There are few surviving sources on Caligula's reign, although he is described as a noble and moderate ruler during the first six months of his rule. After this, the sources focus upon his cruelty, sadism, extravagance, and intense sexual perversity, presenting him as an insane tyrant. While the reliability of these sources has increasingly been called into question, it is known that during his brief reign, Caligula worked to increase the unconstrained personal power of the emperor (as opposed to countervailing powers within the principate). He directed much of his attention to ambitious construction projects and notoriously luxurious dwellings for himself. However, he initiated the construction of two new aqueducts in Rome: the Aqua Claudia and the Anio Novus. During his reign, the Empire annexed the Kingdom of Mauretania and made it into a province. In early 41 AD, Caligula became the first Roman emperor to be assassinated, the result of a conspiracy involving officers of the Praetorian Guard, as well as members of the Roman Senate and of the imperial court. The conspirators' attempt to use the opportunity to restore the Roman Republic was thwarted: on the same day the Praetorian Guard declared Caligula's uncle Claudius emperor in his place.

this is a story about the mad emperor Nero who almost destroyed his own empire . At first Nero focused much of his attention on diplomacy, trade, and enhancing the cultural life of the Empire. He ordered theaters built and promoted athletic games. During his reign, the redoubtable general Corbulo conducted a successful war and negotiated peace with the Parthian Empire. His general Suetonius Paulinus crushed a revolt in Britain and also annexed the Bosporan Kingdom to the Empire, beginning the First Roman--Jewish War. In 64, most of Rome was destroyed in the Great Fire of Rome, which many Romans believed Nero himself had started in order to clear land for his planned palatial complex, the Domus Aurea. In 68, the rebellion of Vindex in Gaul and later the acclamation of Galba in Hispania drove Nero from the throne. Facing assassination, he committed suicide on 9 June 68 (the first Roman emperor to do so). His death ended the Julio-Claudian Dynasty, sparking a brief period of civil wars known as the Year of the Four Emperors. Nero's rule is often associated with tyranny and extravagance. He is known for many executions, including those of his mother and the probable murder by poison of his stepbrother, Britannicus. He is infamously known as the Emperor who "fiddled while Rome burned" (although this is now considered an inaccurate rumor) and as an early persecutor of Christians. He was known for having captured Christians burned in his garden at night for a source of light. This view is based on the writings of Tacitus, Suetonius, and Cassius Dio, the main surviving sources for Nero's reign. Few surviving sources paint Nero in a favorable light. Some sources, though, including some mentioned above, portray him as an emperor who was popular with the common Roman people, especially in the East.

German chieftain Ballomar 180 AD... Gaius Julius Sohaemus, also known as Sohaemus of Armenia and Sohaemo (Armenian: Սոհեմոս, Greek: Γάϊος Ἰούλιος Σόαιμος, Sohaemus is Arabic for little dagger, flourished 2nd century) was an Emesene Prince and Aristocrat from Syria who served as a Roman Client King of Armenia. Sohaemus was a prominent person in the Roman Empire in the 2nd century from the Syrian Roman Client Emesene Dynasty. He was a monarch of Assyrian, Greek, Armenian, Medes, Berber and Roman ancestry. The novelist of the 2nd century, his contemporary Iamblichus claims Sohaemus has his fellow-countryman. Iamblichus calls Sohaemus as an Arsacid and Achaemenid, in his lineage and was a descendant of the Median Princess Iotapa, who was once betrothed to the Ptolemaic Prince Alexander Helios. Little is known on Sohaemus’ family and early life prior to becoming King of Armenia. Before becoming King, Sohaemus had been a Roman Senator and served as a Consul in Rome at an unknown date. In the year 144, Sohaemus succeeded Vologases I as King of Armenia. The circumstances leading to his appointment to the Armenian throne is unknown. Sohaemus was a contemporary to the rule of the Roman emperors: Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus and Commodus of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. In the first reign, he ruled from the years from 144 until 161. Not much is known of about his first reign. The novelist Iamblichus living in Armenia at the time of his rule describes his reign as ‘in succession to his ancestors’. This statement can also refer to his former ancestor Sohaemus of Emesa who lived in the 1st century. In 161 Vologases IV of Parthia, son of the legitimate King Mithridates IV of Parthia, dispatched his troops to seize Armenia and eradicated the Roman legions stationed in the country under the legatus Gaius Severianus. Encouraged by the Spahbod Osroes, Parthian troops marched further West into Roman Syria. After Armenia was seized by the Parthians, Sohaemus became a former ruling monarch living in political exile, possibly living in Rome. Sohaemus was well known in Rome and there were rumors in some quarters that he was not the right man in the right place. On Roman terms, Parthia had made peace with Rome, Sohaemus was installed as King of Armenia by Lucius Verus in either 163 or 164. The ceremony for Sohaemus in becoming Armenian King for the second time, may have took place in Antioch or Ephesus. In 164, Latin coinage were struck in Armenia with the inscription L. Verus. Aug. Armeniacus and on the reverse Rex Armen(ii)s datus. The time of his second reign is unknown. Sohaemus reigned from 163 perhaps up to 186. Sometime during his reign, Sohaemus was expelled by elements favorable to Parthia. Sohaemus was expelled because a man called Tiridates stirred up trouble in Armenia who had murdered the King of the Osroenes and had thrust his sword in the face of Publius Martius Verus, the Roman Governor of Cappadocia when he rebuked for it. Tiridates only punishment for his crimes was to be exiled to Roman Britain, by Marcus Aurelius. As a result of Sohaemus’ second expulsion from Armenia; Roman forces went to war with Parthian soldiers. Parthia retook most of their lost territory in 166, as Sohaemus from his expulsion retreated to Syria. After Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus and the Parthian rulers intervened in the conflict, the son of Vologases IV of Parthia, Vologases II assumed the Armenian throne in 186. It has been suggested that the Garni Temple in Armenia, may have been the tomb probably belonging to Sohaemus, based on the construction date as the temple was probably built in 175. The Emesene prince, Julius Alexander may have been the possible son of Sohaemus. Sohaemus is played by Omar Sharif in the 1964 film The Fall of the Roman Empire

Total War Attila: Eastern Roman Empire #16 - Sassanids Can Die!
The Hun's attack with their huge caverlry advantage, we will survive the onslaught or will this mark the beginning of the end for the Eastern Roman Empire?
Isis is a goddess from the polytheistic pantheon of Egypt. She was first worshiped in Ancient Egyptian religion, and later her worship spread throughout the Roman empire and the greater Greco-Roman world. Isis is still widely worshiped by many pagans today in diverse religious contexts; including a number of distinct pagan religions, the modern Goddess movement, and interfaith organizations such as the Fellowship of Isis. Isis was worshipped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the patroness of nature and magic. She was the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans and the downtrodden, but she also listened to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats and rulers.[2] Isis is often depicted as the mother of Horus, the falcon-headed deity associated with king and kingship although in some traditions Horus's mother was Hathor. Isis is also known as protector of the dead and goddess of children. Almeno 13 i connazionali rimasti feriti.

With El Dorado we get the option to create custom nations, thus creating your own fun scenarios. In this one I have decided to create a Italian Roman Empire and we are going to go for a potential world conquest because I think that could be fun. Again, if you feel like I should remake the nation I probably will, and I will also start working on Naguar and Sweden again and will probably have a longer summary episode once I catch up there. Ukraine Bible Prophecy When Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon had a dream of a great metallic image, he was so troubled that he threatened to have all of his magicians dissected if they were unable to reveal his dream and its interpretation. The prophet Daniel, however, revealed that the dream signified "what shall be in the latter days" (Dan 2v28).Hello this is Nick Barnes, with this week's Bible in the News.Daniel explained that the interpretation ran chronologically from the Babylonian head of gold, through Medo-Persian breast and arms, Greek belly and thighs, Roman legs, and on to the feet and toes, in whose days "shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever." (Dan 2v44)The legs of iron, to which the feet were attached, signified the Eastern and Western Roman Empires, whose stamp is clearly seen in modern Europe. And the characteristics, of these two divergent powers, is developed in Daniel chapters 7 & 8. Daniel 7 shows four beasts, again chronologically representing the four great empires of Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome. Out of the fourth, and most terrible beast (the Roman Empire), grows a horn who makes "war with the saints, and prevailed against them; Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom." (Dan 7:21-22)This horn symbolised a political power, with a religious aspect (the eyes and mouth), which developed in the west. It was forged by a Germanic king (Charlemagne) of a Germanic Tribe (the Franks) and its seat was in a German city (Aachen). Yet it became known as the Holy Roman Empire and its king was entitled Roman Emperor and was styled Kaiser, or Caesar. And this horn power continues beyond Charlemagne's First Reich, through Bismarck's Second Reich and Hitler's Third Reich, right down to today, where we see a resurgent Germany, again increasingly dominating Western Europe. And Western Europe shows its Latin ancestry, in its Roman "Christian" religion, its Latin alphabet, its history of Latin based education, and its many languages derived from Latin. This Latin aspect is signified by the fact that the horn grew out of the Roman beast. However, if we want to learn how Russia fits into this story, we need to go to Daniel 8. Here Gabriel explicitly identifies the Medo-Persian Empire and the Greek Empire as the ram and goat respectively, in v20-21. Greek dominion will be established by a first and great king, we are told, and then be broken into four, lesser powers (v22), seen as four horns (v8). To this point, the symbology and interpretation almost exactly parallels Daniel 7's bear and leopard. However, when we look for the Roman Empire, in Dan 8, we find no equivalent beast to represent it. Instead we find only a little horn growing out of one of the goat's four horns, which we are told is "a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences" who stands up "in the latter time of their [the four horns'] kingdom". This horn, from a horn, from the goat, might initially seem unsatisfying and maybe inappropriate, as a symbol for the mighty Roman Dominion. However, it is not an omission, but is instead the key to understanding the chapter properly. We are told that this little horn "waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land" (v9), but no mention is made of westerly expansion. This is the clue which explains the riddle. The little horn is not the Roman Empire per se; it is the Roman Empire as it develops in the East. That is why Rome, in Dan 8, is symbolised as a power emerging from the Greek goat. The Roman Empire in the East, and later the Eastern Roman (or Byzantine) Empire developed a Greek character. Its language (as we know from the New Testament) was Greek, its education and its philosophy was Greek, its religion was Greek, and its alphabet was Greek -- and down to today, Eastern Europe bears this mark, with Greek influenced languages and an alphabet derived from the Greek. So while Dan 7 shows us how, in the latter days, the Roman Empire would develop a Latin aspect in the West, Dan 8 shows us how the Roman Empire would develop a Greek aspect in the East. And as the little horn of Dan 7 is to "prevail... until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom" (Dan 7v21-22), so the little horn of Dan 8 is to "stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand" (Dan 8v25).
Bible in the News In about 584BC, Nebuchadnezzar II, the king of the Babylonian Empire, had a strange dream, recorded in Daniel ch2. He saw a metallic image, whose golden head, we are informed, represented his own great kingdom (v38). The silver breast and arms, and the brazen belly and thighs represented the empires that would follow on (v39). These are named explicitly, in Dan 8v20, 21, as the Medo-Persian and the Greek empires, respectively. But what Daniel was particularly interested in, was the 4th kingdom (Dan 7v19); a power as strong and as durable as iron, whose influence permeates the kingdom of men to our day. This fourth kingdom was, of course, the Roman Empire. It was as "strong as iron" v40 tells us. And the Roman Empire's division in 395AD was signified, in the dream, by the two iron legs of the image. In history, the one leg was the Eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire. This empire, was ruled from its capital city, Constantinople (today called Istanbul), until it was overrun by the Ottoman Turks in 1453. However, that was not the end, for Ivan III of Russia married Sophia Paleologue, the niece of the last Byzantine emperor. Under the laws of inheritance, followed by most European monarchies of the time, Ivan could claim that he and his offspring were heirs of the fallen Empire. In consequence, his court was transformed with grand Byzantine ceremonies and meticulous court etiquette and Ivan took the title of Czar (ie Caesar). Thus Moscow became the third Rome, and continued the Greeko-Roman traditions (seen in its architecture, education, culture and religion) down to modern times. The other leg was the Western Roman Empire. Its imperial form continued only until the 5th Century, when the barbarian chieftains gradually took over from within. However, a new "Roman" Empire was established by Charlemagne, king of the Franks in 800AD. His empire, later known as the Holy Roman Empire, was ruled by Kaisers (Caesars) until 1806, when overthrown by Napoleon Bonaparte. This First Reich, was followed by Bismarck's Second Reich (1870-1918) and Hitler's Third Reich (1933-1945). However, after the Roman legs come the feet and toes. We read in Dan 2v4141 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken [brittle].Now firstly, we should not ignore the fact that the feet and toes have iron in them. The iron in the legs represented the strength of the Roman Empire, as we were told in v40, and the Roman power is still present in the feet and toes. In fact, modern Europe is the leftovers of the Roman Empire. Its very division, into eastern and western portions, each showing the distinct characteristics (in religion, culture, architecture and even character set) demonstrates its Roman inheritance. And across the continent of Europe, and clearly excluding the UK, the ruling elite is still a club packed with devout Catholics. However in the "latter days", another substance is introduced. The feet and toes, of the metallic image, have clay mixed with the iron of Rome. And the significance of this is indicated in v43, where we read43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men:The verse interprets, for us, "iron mixed with miry clay" as meaning "they" (the Roman power) will mingle with "the seed of men". So it is clearly explained that the clay represents the power of "the seed of men". The word translated men is enosh. When this is contrasted with alternative Old Testament words, such as adam and ish, it suggests the common sort of man. So we have the power of the common man represented in this clay power. And in fact, the declining value of the elements of the image, represent the declining status of the authority in each kingdom. Nebuchadnezzar, the head of Gold, was sole and absolute ruler, where as the Medo-Persian king was bound by his own laws as Dan 6v12-16 makes abundantly clear. Both Greek and Roman rulers were further subjugated to the will of senates and other bodies. But in modern democracy, the power of each individual is so low, that it is like miry clay; the power is very common and of almost zero value. And this democratising philosophy, first manifest (in modern times) in the French Revolution, has spread its influence across Europe, until even the Caesar's of Russia were overthrown in the Russian Revolution of 1917. And while the Papacy stood resolutely against it for many more years, the ascension of John XXIII in 1958, with his historic Second Vatican Council, finally brought humanism, socialism and ecumenism into the Church of Rome.

The Guardian 2015-04-06The Roman Empire (Latin: IMPERIVM ROMANVM) was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization, characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean.
The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator (44 BC), the Battle of Actium (2 September 31 BC), and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus (16 January 27 BC).
Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but the Empire reached its greatest extent under Emperor Trajan: during his reign (98 to 117 AD) the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km2 of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world.
Gaius Julius Caesar (Classical Latin: [ˈɡaː.i.ʊs ˈjuː.lɪ.ʊs ˈkaj.sar], July 100 BC – 15 March 44 BC) was a Roman general and statesman and a distinguished writer of Latin prose. He played a critical role in the gradual transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire.
In 60 BC, Caesar, Crassus and Pompey formed a political alliance that was to dominate Roman politics for several years. Their attempts to amass power through populist tactics were opposed by the conservative elite within the Roman Senate[citation needed], among them Cato the Younger with the frequent support of Cicero. Caesar's conquest of Gaul, completed by 51 BC, extended Rome's territory to the English Channel and the Rhine. Caesar became the first Roman general to cross both when he built a bridge across the Rhine and conducted the first invasion of Britain.
These achievements granted him unmatched military power and threatened to eclipse Pompey's standing. The balance of power was further upset by the death of Crassus in 53 BC. Political realignments in Rome finally led to a standoff between Caesar and Pompey, the latter having taken up the cause of the Senate. Ordered by the Senate to stand trial in Rome for various charges, Caesar marched on Rome with one legion—legio XIII—from Gaul to Italy, crossing the Rubicon in 49 BC. This sparked a civil war from which he emerged as the unrivaled leader of the Roman world.
