Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, England, about 2 miles (3 km) west of Amesbury and 8 miles (13 km) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. It is in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.[1] Archaeologists believe it was built anywhere from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. Radiocarbon dating in 2008 suggested that the first stones were raised between 2400 and 2200 BC,[2] whilst another theory suggests that bluestones may have been raised at the site as early as 3000 BC.[3][4][5] More info visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonehenge Stonehenge stonehenge tours stonehenge history Stonehenge Wiltshire England Visit stonehenge documentary Stonehenge Travel Stonehenge Travel Video Guide Get more funny baby 168: Subscribe me: https:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCikDgZyuiy_ZNFfz3_qi_NQ Like me: https://www.facebook.com/funnybaby168 Follow me: https://twitter.com/leavphanith

Travel video about destination Avebury Stone Circle in England. In England, close to the village of Silbury Hill in the county of Wiltshire, a 5,000 year old monument rises from the ground. It is a hill that is almost 40m high and is Europe's largest artificial prehistoric earthwork, built around 2, 800 B.C. The grass covered limestone hill was created for ritual ceremonies and its rocks originated from a huge stone circle that dates back to a Megalithic culture that encompassed the village of Avebury in which ancient rituals were performed right up to the time of Christianity. The White Horses Of Wiltshire are located on several sites in the English county. They are large, white contours of horses that can be seen from far away in the undulating countryside. The 100m long horses consist of limestone and their origin dates back to the 11th century or perhaps even earlier as they are very similar to images found in Stone Age drawings. Scientists believe that the builders of Stonehenge, which is only some 25 km distant, were the same that also constructed Avebury, the so-called ‘Beaker People’.

BBC News 2015-03-19Wiltshire ( /ˈwɪltʃər/ or /ˈwɪltʃɪər/, formerly /ˈwɪlʃər/; or the County of Wilts) is a ceremonial county in South West England. It is landlocked and borders the counties of Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. It contains the unitary authority of Swindon and covers 3,485 km2 (1,346 square miles). The ancient county town was Wilton, but since 1930 Wiltshire County Council and its successor Wiltshire Council (from 2009) have been based at Trowbridge.
Wiltshire is characterised by its high downland and wide valleys. Salisbury Plain is famous as the location of the Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles and other ancient landmarks and as the main training area in the UK of the British Army. The city of Salisbury is notable for its mediaeval cathedral. Important country houses open to the public include Longleat, near Warminster, and the National Trust's Stourhead, near Mere.
The county, in the 9th century written as Wiltunscir, later Wiltonshire, is named after the former county town of Wilton, itself named after the river Wylye, one of eight rivers which drain the county.
Wiltshire Council is the unitary authority for most of the county of Wiltshire, in the West of England, the successor authority to Wiltshire County Council (1889–2009) and to four districts—Kennet, North Wiltshire, Salisbury, and West Wiltshire—all of which had been created in 1973 and were abolished in 2009.
The ceremonial county of Wiltshire consists of two unitary authority areas, Wiltshire and Swindon, governed respectively by Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council. Before April 2009, Wiltshire was administered as a non-metropolitan county by Wiltshire County Council, with four districts, Kennet, North Wiltshire, Salisbury, and West Wiltshire. Swindon, in the north of the county, had been a separate unitary authority since 1997, and on 5 December 2007 the British Government announced that the rest of Wiltshire would move to unitary status. This was later put into effect by a statutory instrument as part of the 2009 structural changes to local government in England. To date, this has been one of the most successful Unitary initiatives in the UK, achieved on time and under budget, and gaining a glowing report from the DCLG.
