Dialect – Knightstone Island: Action Fraud spot corruption in North Somerset Council Julian Parry from Weston Super Mare drops byagain this week to recount the various tales of corruption in North Somerset Council… the Tropicana and Knightstone Island as well as waste management feature heavily. Certain individual council officers may have profited from the sale of a lease on Knightstone Island for the princely sum of £1.00 a year when it was worth around a cool £8 million. http://dialectradio.wordpress.com/2014/11/25/dialect-knightstone-island-action-fraud-spot-corruption-in-north-somerset-council/

This week I’m in Wells, in Somerset, not to be mistaken with Wells in Somerset. Toby's channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/tobydolier?sub_confirmation=1 You may think that this picturesque location is a town but it’s not a town, it's a city and that’s because it has a cathedral. In fact it’s the smallest city in the UK. Wells Cathedral is actually relatively new, it was built in 2009. The architect, Mrs Maureen Tucker gave the finished building it’s “aged” look by dabbing the brick work with tea bags. Many have accused Well’s residents of being xenophobic and intolerant of other cultures which is why it may surprise you that Wells was the first place in the UK to regular produce curry. The first one they brought out in England was the vegetable bhuna, other dishes followed in subsequent years. No visit to Wells would be complete without a visit to Bakwell Manor, the former home of the late Mr Kipling. Guest to the manor house often report seeing the ghost of the famous baker who, in life, was exceedingly good at making cakes. __________ Music: http://audiojungle.net/item/spanish-rhythmic-guitar/151349 / http://audiojungle.net/item/spanish-summer-dance/2421901 Stock video: http://videohive.net/item/indian-curry-vegetables-with-couscous/4765614

Singapore Visitor Center, opposite Somerset MRT station, Singapore. This place provides free Wi-Fi for tourists!! This is a brand new Singapore Visitor Center, opened 17 Feb 2015. Housed in a Peranakan building, right opposite Somerset MRT station. I check out the Visitor center and the friendly tourism ambassador shows me how she can make good recommendations for the tourist, using the new interactive computer system, and even print out a coloured map and itinerary for the tourist. This is really cool! Opening Hours: 9:30AM to 10:30PM The following write up is taken from the Singapore Tourism Board Press release dated 16 Feb 2015. Singapore Visitor Centre Relocates to orchardgateway@emerald A one-stop touch-point catering and customising to visitor needs Singapore, 16 February 2015 – The Singapore Visitor Centre (SVC) will have a new home at 216 Orchard Road; situated next to orchardgateway@emerald, from 17 February. Set in a two-storey conserved Peranakan shophouse in the heritage-rich Emerald Hill area, the centre is designed with the visitor experience in mind, from the spatial layout to the range of services available. The SVC will provide more services, including the sale of arts and entertainment tickets, on top of existing tours, accommodation and attractions booking options. It will also house a retail space that offers locally-designed souvenirs - curated based on what one can "Eat", "See", "Hear" and "Learn" in Singapore. Visitors can bring home a variety of souvenirs that take inspiration from traditional local food such as kueh tutu to Singapore's distinctive HDB flats. A key feature of the new Centre is the use of technology to help visitors explore more of Singapore. Besides two large screens that display a variety of places of interest and events in Singapore, there are four interactive information kiosks that allow visitors to first browse and select places to explore, before putting them together in a digital itinerary. This personalised itinerary can then be printed immediately and/or emailed to the visitors' smartphones. Complimentary WiFi will also be available for visitors to stay connected within the SVC, enhancing the overall visitor experience. STB Director, Visitor Experience & Capability Development, Ms Choo Huei Miin said, "The new Singapore Visitor Centre aims to be a one-stop service and information touch-point that adds to visitors' overall experience in Singapore. We hope that, through the effective use of technology coupled with personalised and warm assistance provided by our Customer Service Officers, visitors will have a better understanding of what Singapore can offer and be inspired to explore and uncover our many hidden gems." While the first level of the centre is devoted to key visitor services, the second level is an event space that will be open in the second quarter of the year. There will be temporary exhibitions and interactive installations that will present different facets of Singapore, adding layers to deliver a compelling Singapore story. The new SVC will replace the current one located at the junction of Cairnhill Road and Orchard Road, which will cease operations on 17 February. Visitors can also approach SVC@ION Orchard and Chinatown Visitor Centre @ Kreta Ayer Square. For more information on locations and operating hours, please visit the YourSingapore website at: www.yoursingapore.com/about-singapore/traveller-information/tourism-centre.html.

noodls 2015-03-20The ceremonial and non-metropolitan county of Somerset (i/ˈsʌmərsɛt/ or /ˈsʌmərsɨt/) in South West England borders Bristol and Gloucestershire to the north, Wiltshire to the east, Dorset to the south-east, and Devon to the south-west. It is partly bounded to the north and west by the Bristol Channel and the estuary of the River Severn. Its traditional northern border is the River Avon, but the administrative boundary has crept southwards with the creation and expansion of the City of Bristol, and latterly the county of Avon and its successor unitary authorities to the north. Somerset's county town, Taunton, is in the south.
Somerset is a rural county of rolling hills such as the Blackdown Hills, Mendip Hills, Quantock Hills and Exmoor National Park, and large flat expanses of land including the Somerset Levels. There is evidence of human occupation from Palaeolithic times, and of subsequent settlement in the Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods. The county played a significant part in the consolidation of power and rise of King Alfred the Great, and later in the English Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion.
North Somerset is a unitary authority in England. Its area covers part of the ceremonial county of Somerset but it is administered independently of the non-metropolitan county. Its administrative headquarters is in the town hall in Weston-super-Mare.
North Somerset borders the local government areas of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, Mendip and Sedgemoor. North Somerset contains the parliamentary constituencies of Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset.
Between 1 April 1974 and 31 March 1996, it was the Woodspring district of the county of Avon (named after Woodspring Priory, an isolated mediaeval church near the coast just north east of Weston-super-Mare). The district of Woodspring was formed from the municipal boroughs of Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Portishead urban districts, Long Ashton Rural District, and part of Axbridge Rural District.
Though the government proposed that the new unitary area be known as "North West Somerset" from 1 April 1996, the council voted instead to adopt the name "North Somerset" and so the name "North West Somerset" was never widely used. There remained some legal doubt as to whether the council had validly changed the name to "North Somerset", but in 2005 the council passed a resolution to put the matter beyond doubt.
