Bakers make cakes, pastries and other savoury foods, using a wide range of ingredients. Bakers complete the full process of baking, from mixing dough by hand or by machine, to checking and unloading ovens, to ensuring bread is baked and cooled down in time for your customers to consume (usually the first batch is baked in the morning in time for breakfast). Pastries and cakes will also need to be glazed and iced for your customers. Bakers also deal with customers, suppliers or wholesalers to order more ingredients to send produce to other bakeries, cafes or restaurants.
To succeed as a baker, you will need to relish practical work, be a creative thinker, have excellent hand-eye coordination and have physical stamina. Above all, as a professional baker, you will need to possess high personal presentation and hygiene standards (nobody wants to buy food from someone who looks and smells like Oscar the Grouch!).
Aside from the obvious task of baking break and following recipes, bakers will be required to lift trays from ovens and wholesale-size ingredient packs off floors or benches to counters etc. Bakers often work late nights or early mornings some even start at three in the morning! Bakers need to ensure that equipment meets proper health and safety standards, and that raw ingredients also meet proper health standards.
