I am sure this is the first time that a Head of School has done this. A great crowd turned up--over 100 people including many first year students. "V" always has some insight you wont hear anywhere else. JD asks about the price of gold and silver. Why are so many banks setting aside funds for the currency exchange probes? What is going on with BRICS, MINT and the NEXT 11? Who is really behind them and what is the motivation? We ask "V" to look into his crystal ball, follow the trends and tell us what America might look like in 6- 12 months. And The Guerrilla Economist usually has some breaking news or inside information that leaves our jaw on the floor. In many ways terrorism works just like a business, and a costly one - the organization needs arms, supplies, and each recruit needs to be fed and equipped; it all costs money. But where do terrorists get their money? How are the atrocities financed? Is jihad even possible when you have no-one to back it with a hefty sum? And can a terror group become independent? We ask these questions to economist and expert of the terrorist financial world, Loretta Napoleoni. Australia’s economy continues to be helped by low interest rates and the falling exchange rate, while construction, retail sales and building approvals display mercurial performance. Though housing prices continue to climb, there is no immediate threat of a bubble. While China’s economic growth continues to slow, it continues as a positive for Australia’s exports and capital expenditure, even though reliance on China is very much a double-edged sword. . The US economy has moved into a “box seat” position almost by attrition, which is reflected in homebuyers’ confidence and the housing market in general. In Europe, the negative effects of deflation continue to be felt, however, the UK has managed to buck this trend. Overall, there is a growing need for expansionary fiscal policy in Europe. In this Q & A interview, BT Financial Group’s chief economist Chris Caton highlights challenges to the Australia’s economy, along with international changes and trends that signal a subdued, but by no means dire, global economic landscape.
