Linlithgow (/lɪnˈlɪθɡoʊ/; Scottish Gaelic: Gleann Iucha, Scots: Lithgae) is a royal burgh in West Lothian, Scotland. It is West Lothian's county town, reflected in the county's alternate name of Linlithgowshire. An ancient town, it lies south of its two most prominent landmarks: Linlithgow Palace and Linlithgow Loch, and north of the Union Canal.
Linlithgow's patron saint is Saint Michael and its motto is St. Michael is kinde to straingers. A statue of the saint holding the burgh coat of arms stands on the high street.
Linlithgow is located in the north-east of West Lothian, close to the border with Stirlingshire. It lies 20 miles (30 km) west of Edinburgh along the main railway route to Glasgow. Before the construction of the M8 & M9 motorways and the opening of the Forth Road Bridge, the town lay on the main road from Edinburgh to Stirling, Perth and Inverness while the canal system linked the burgh to Edinburgh and Glasgow. The nearby village of Blackness once served as the burgh's port. Linlithgow is overlooked by its local hill, Cockleroi.

Both men have their eyes on the lovely Flora, who resides with her aunt, the iconoclastic and well-traveled Miss Susan Emily Gilcrist. By chance, living close to the camp is Jacques's grandfather and brother, whom Jacques believes died years before. Jacques decides to escape, find his relatives, and win the hand of Flora; Major Chevening and an unforeseen enemy stand in his way. Can Miss Gilcrist contrive to make everything work out?

The chief historic attraction of Linlithgow is the remains of Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of James V and Mary, Queen of Scots, and probably Scotland's finest surviving late medieval secular building. The present Palace was started (on an older site) in 1424 by James I of Scotland. It was burnt in 1746, and, whilst unroofed, it is still largely complete in terms of its apartments (though very few of the original furnishings survived). It's such a shame this historic building has been left to end up in such a sad state. Built in 1889. Unfortunately some of it has been demolished due to being "dangerous" and it also has fire damage, and only a small amount remains of what it once was. I've tried my best to film every bit of detail left I could find to give you an idea of what it looked like. Information: Originally called the Jubilee Hall, the building was erected as a new town hall through public subscription. It displays a curious mix of Scots baronial and Germanic styling. The building's corbelled turrets and pinnacles were removed in 1937, when it was converted into the Ritz Cinema by Alexander Cattenach. The battlements, machiolations, niches, rope-mouldings and round-headed entranceway survive however.

Although derelict for many years, there's new hope for the building as the Linlithgow Building Trust has been created to transform the building from an eyesore into an asset for the town centre. Here's hoping this project goes ahead and the building once again becomes an asset to Linlithgow. Music courtesy of last.fm an...

Scotland travel: The stones still stand 600+ years after they were built, but all the wooden beams for the roof and all the furnishings were lost in a fire. Still, such spectacular architecture continues to stand, coming from a time when leeches were considered advanced medicine. Makes you wonder which of our current architecture will stand that test of time. Linlithgow palace is about an hour drive from where we stayed at Dalhousie Castle, and about two hours from Culzean Castle. Real People having Real Fun!
