Red Kite (bird of prey) caught from above by DJI Phantom 2 quadcopter drone

This Red Kite (bird of prey) flew into view below me as I hovered with the GoPro looking down. I tried to follow it for a fairly unusual shot of a large bird of prey from directly above. Filmed near Wittenham Clumps in South Oxfordshire from a DJI Phantom 2 with Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal. Preview image is not to scale! :) My "On the Kitchen Table" videos are mainly aimed at newcomers to multirotors, quadcopters, drones and UAVs, particularly to the DJI product range, and the Phantom line in particular. I have how to's, product reviews, tips, tricks, hints and information for beginners and those in the early stages of the hobby. I film it "on the kitchen table" to show people that, like me, you don't need a workshop and an array of specialist equipment and years of experience to get started and progress with flying these amazing aircraft and enjoying making great aerial videos and stills. Rural lifestyle was established long ago to meet demands of human life. Since the way of life has gradually changed for human, rural lifestyle has evolved as well. With the development of civilization we have started to become more accustomed with urban lifestyle. With time, thanks to modern technology, various infrastructures (e.g. roads, buildings etc.) have emerged throughout our cities. A number of birds have disappeared due to Insufficiency of trees, caused by urbanization. But few species of birds are still surviving by altering their habits (e.g. feeding, breeding etc.) to get adapted to changed urban environment. These birds have grown intimacy with city dwelling human. Sparrow, Starling, Kite, Crow, Owl, Dove, Sunbird, Parakeet, Tailorbird etc. are remarkable among those birds. Since our large cities are highly populated, increased amount of wastes can be seen there. As a result, scavenger birds have easily adapted to our urban environments. Crows are the most advanced among such birds. They can be seen in every city. Their population is richer than other birds. Though Crows are not that popular among common people, they are useful for urban ecosystem. Few species of Starling can be seen in urban areas. Common Myna and Asian Pied Starling are mentionable among those. Asian Pied Starlings are the most available among Starlings. Because they depend on waste more than other Starlings. They collect food from waste in flock. Common Myna also fearlessly roam in urban areas. Black Kites can also be seen in urban areas. They are well-known as scavenger. Since they have very keen eyesight, they forage for feeding by flying high. Hundreds of them flock together to feed on wastes. Brahminy Kites are also available in urban areas. Being a scavenger bird they have also become accustomed with urban life. Sparrows are a common urban bird. They can also be seen in crowded areas. They roam in buildings, small bushes and trees. They can be seen roam as couple or in small flocks. Sometimes hundreds of them can be seen together. They build nest in buildings. Spotted Dove is also an urban bird. They can be seen roosting on urban electric wires. They are gray-brown colored bird. They have black & white spots on their neck. Rock Pigeon is well-known for religious reason. Hundreds of them can be seen roaming together in urban shrines and temples. They also build nest in buildings with straws. Among nocturnal birds Barn Owl & Spotted Owlet can be seen in various cities. In breeding season they build nest on the roof of buildings. Though they remain silent during daytime, they become active at dusk. Common Tailorbirds can be seen sometimes in urban areas. These little birds look wonderful. They roam restlessly from branches to branches. Mechanized cities become melodious with their calls. Since they are insectivorous, small urban plants are their habitat. Despite being forest bird, Rose-ringed Parakeet can also be seen in urban areas. It’s a gorgeous bird. They mainly live in small flock but can also be seen as couple. Melodious bird Sunbird can also be seen in urban areas. Presence of these birds make urban plants colorful. These birds feed on flower honey and, in chorus, help in pollination. A number of water bodies are still surviving in our urban areas. These water bodies contain some water throughout the year. As a result, some aquatic birds (e.g. Heron) roam in those water bodies. Wagtails can be seen in around those water bodies and sometimes in house yards. Most of the time they walk shaking their tail. These urban birds are keeping cities green by helping in pollination. Some of them are maintaining environmental balance by feeding on insects. Scavenger birds are keeping cities clean. Above all, these birds are inseparable part of urban areas. But their population is falling due to food shortage, destruction of urban trees etc. So we must ensure their safe habitat by protecting existing trees and planting new trees. Ensuring food and habitat will help them to maintain healthy lifestyle. Only then our healthy and prosperous urban life will be ensured.

Colonial living is a vital issue for birds. Fellowship is common in various species of birds. They inherit this trait from nature. This innate behavior is mainly for their survival. This sense of fellowship begets the notion of colonial living in birds. The norm of colonial living varies depending on birds’ species. Within such lifestyle they enjoy their life and protect themselves as group. Migration, feeding and breeding are mainly the reasons behind birds’ colonial way of life. A fine sense of fellowship can be seen in many of our resident bird species. This is mainly due to feeding habit. Fellowship grow in them depending on the type of their diet. Frugivorous birds usually roam in flock together. This group includes various species of Green-Pigeon and Parakeet. Hundreds of these birds fly together in flock. They feed on fruits in flock from the same tree. Insectivorous or seed eaters form different flocks. But sometimes frugivorous and insectivorous birds flock together to forage for feeding. Vulture, Kite, Common Myna etc. scavenger birds are also seen to be in flock for feeding. They may roam alone or as couple but while feeding they form a large flock. Weaver, Openbill, Egret, Cormorant etc. birds live in flock during breeding time. Weavers are well-known for their fantastic nest building capacity. Flock of Weavers build their own separate houses for breeding purpose. Bee-eaters also form flock for breeding. Their breeding system is bit different. Numerous Bee-eaters build their nest in earth hole for breeding. Birds like: Egret, Cormorant and Openbill flock together to build their nests in a particular area, which is generally termed as colony. Same species and sometimes different species of birds can be seen to build nests in the same colony. In some colonies, hundreds or thousands of birds build their nests. Every year, in winter, thousands of migratory birds come in our country. Presence of Godwit, Curlew, Plover, Gull, Tern etc. birds make nature colorful. These birds migrate to Bangladesh to avoid excessive cold. Flocks of these birds migrate together. They move in flock to deal with various natural difficulties. Most of our migratory birds come here from Siberia. To make this long flight easy flock of these birds fly in a V formation. This way they accelerate each-other’s speed by syncing their flapping. This helps to minimize their energy use and to fly longer time. After long flight they take shelter in our wetlands. Most of these migratory birds make their place in our Haors and Coastal areas. They make the surroundings vibrant with their color. They roam in flocks of various size. Thousands of birds can be seen foraging for feeding in a single flock. The whole ecosystem becomes sonorous with their sweet calls. They nicely maintain fellowship within themselves. If terrified, flock of them flies away from one place to another. They feed throughout winter and then return to their home in flock. Sometimes birds live in flock also to maintain their body temperature. Birds’ colonial life is mainly for their survival. But various manmade causes are hampering their colonial life. Their usual lifestyle is being hampered due to lack of food. Breeding system is being disturbed the most. As a result, the number of colonial birds is gradually decreasing. Some species are now at the brink of extinction. If it continues this way, other depending organisms will also become endangered. The complete ecosystem will become unstable. We can acquire versatile knowledge from the lifestyle of these colonial birds. But before that, these birds need to be conserved. Public awareness can help them survive in our nature.

From "Sarvodaya Sevabhavi Samstha" animal welfare organization at Queens Road, Bengaluru The loose kite strings which are entangled in trees after kite festival causes problems to birds.The legs or wings of the birds that roost, nest or fly past get entangled, leaving them hanging upside down and often dying a slow miserable death. This Black Kite got entangled in such string and was hanging with its one wing tied and desperately trying to break free. The team from Sarvodaya http://www.sarvodayavets.org/ was able to rescue the bird from the tree top and heavy traffic below. As there was no idea since how many days the Kite was hanging on the tree, after observations by our Sarvodaya's vet the kite was completely dehydrated and malnutritioned and we had given proper treatment/observation for 48 hours and shifted to BBMP'S forest cell for further treatment as our shelter is not equipped for wildlife care. Thank you for any support for our lifesaving activities! From Wikipedia: The black kite (Milvus migrans) is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors. It is thought to be the world's most abundant species of Accipitridae, although some populations have experienced dramatic declines or fluctuations.[2] Current global population estimates run up to 6 million individuals.[3] Unlike others of the group, black kites are opportunistic hunters and are more likely to scavenge. They spend a lot of time soaring and gliding in thermals in search of food. Their angled wing and distinctive forked tail make them easy to identify.

The black-winged kite (Elanus caeruleus) is a small diurnal bird of prey in the family Accipitridae best known for its habit of hovering over open grasslands in the manner of the much smaller kestrels. This Eurasian and African species was sometimes combined with the Australian black-shouldered kite (Elanus axillaris) and the white-tailed kite (Elanus leucurus) of North and South America which together form a superspecies. This kite is distinctive, with long-wings, white, grey and black plumage and owl like forward-facing eyes with red irises. Although mainly seen on the plains, they are sometimes seen on grassy slopes of hills in the higher elevation regions of Asia. They are not migratory, but make short-distance movements in response to weather. This long-winged raptor is predominantly grey or white with black shoulder patches, wing tips and eye stripe. The long falcon-like wings extend beyond the tail when the bird is perched. In flight, the short and square tail is visible and it is not forked as in the typical kites of the genus Milvus. When perched, often on roadside wires, it often adjusts its wings and jerks its tail up and down as if to balance itself. The sexes are alike in plumage.[2] Their large forward-facing eyes and velvety plumage are characters that are shared with owls and the genus itself has been considered as a basal group within the Accipitridae. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-winged_kite
