The points of the compass are points on a compass, specifically on the compass rose, marking divisions of the four cardinal directions: North, South, East, West. The number of points may be only the 4 cardinal points, or the 8 principal points adding the intercardinal (or ordinal) directions northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW). In meteorological usage further intermediate points are added to give the sixteen points of a wind compass. Finally, at the most complete in European tradition, are found the full thirty-two points of the mariner's compass. In ancient China 24 points of the compass were used. The mariner's practice of boxing the compass is the action of naming all thirty-two points of the compass in order clockwise. The names of intermediate points are formed by the initials of the cardinal directions and their intermediate ordinal directions, and are very handy to refer to a heading (or course or azimuth) in a general or colloquial fashion, without having to resort to computing or recalling degrees. For most applications, the minor points have been superseded by degrees measured clockwise from North. This video is targeted to blind users. A live recording of Matt Bryden reading his opening poems 'Small Change' and 'Boxing Day Shoot' from his collection Boxing the Compass at the Templar Poetry launch at the Keats House, Hampstead. This collection is available in the Poetry Bookshop for £8.99 PURCHASE HERE: http://templarpoetry.com/collections/new-titles/products/boxing-the-compass-by-matt-bryden More info: You can never escape yourself. Taking in childhood, teaching, Eastern Europe, relationships, illness and death, the narrator of Boxing the Compass ends up where he began, but with an altered perspective. As the nautical term of the title -- which refers to a wind blowing from all 36 points of the compass in quick succession -- implies figuratively, travel can lead you to change your mind and change it back. Born and raised in Beckenham, Matt Bryden is an EFL teacher whose work has taken him to Tuscany, the Czech Republic and Poland. His pamphlet Night Porter was a winner of the Templar Pamphlet and Collection award 2010. His work is widely published in the UK, while his translations of the work of Taiwanese poet Ami have appeared in Modern Poetry in Translation and (in collaboration with Ingrid Fan) The Desire to Sing after Sunset. He has an MA in Creative and Life Writing from Goldsmiths College. Boxing the Compass was launched at a packed event on Friday 29th November at Keats House, Hampstead alongside The Invention of Fireworks by Beatrice Garland.

Boxing the compass is the action of naming all thirty-two clockwise points of the compass in order. Such names are formed by the initials of the cardinal directions and their intermediate ordinal directions, and are very handy to refer to a heading (or course or azimuth) in a general or colloquial fashion, without having to resort to computing or recalling degrees. For most applications, the minor points have been superseded by degrees measured clockwise from North.
The names of the 32-wind compass rose follow these rules:
- The cardinal directions are North (N), East (E), South (S), West (W), at 90° angles on the compass rose.
- The ordinal directions are Northeast (NE), Southeast (SE), Southwest (SW) and Northwest (NW), formed by bisecting the angle of the cardinal winds. The name is merely a combination of the cardinals it bisects.
- The eight principal winds (or main winds) are the cardinals and ordinals considered thogether, that is N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW. Each principal wind is 45° from its neighbor. The principal winds form the basic eight-wind compass rose.
Break the chain of command,
Hate the voice in your heart,
Are these the choices holding you back?
Walls will crush you,
The voices that put you straight in the ground,
These are the demons that show you your worth
What you are worth!
Stop watching, watching the stars,
Truth of the nightmare that hides here in the dark,
Further away, harder to see
This compass will guide you, will lead you
Straight, straight through your thoughts
The cure to your illness,
Waits in the dirt with what you’re worth,
With what you’re worth
Stand, behind the eyes of the true hate, judging!
See, the hatred that runs through your face,
Wear you thin!
You give me some answers!
You give me, what I’m owed, what I’m worth,
Now!
Break, the chain of command,
Hate the voice in your heart,
Here’s what it gives you, it’s all you’re worth
It’s all you’re worth
i am wondering
i don´t see a pretty hall
they speak but were not paragons
well, i hold their map
but the legend i can´t read
what the hell they mean indeed?
i don´t know
i don´t know where to go
so don´t wake me
i don´t know where to hide
when the wolves are out
and the ravens watch the world
i am into it i know
but by the next blink i could cry
why do i not seal it?
or did i?
i cross the fingers and learn to fall
i don´t wanna carry all the weight (alone)
if i could just glue your hands on mine
to hold a compass
that would guide me through the night
and if you wanna make it
if you wanna break out
i would turn the world
we gonna stay here ´till the end of time
don´t wanna fall down like a raindrop after all
i cross the fingers and learn to fall
i don´t wanna carry all the weight (alone)
if i could just glue your hands on mine
to hold a compass
that would guide me through the night
and if you wanna make it
if you wanna break out
i would turn the world
we gonna stay here ´till the end of time
don´t wanna fall down like a raindrop after all
so can you give me shelter?
i don´t wanna wake up and see that all is gone
we wanna stay here ´till the end of dawn
Running from the dark
Dry in a dustbowl
I was captivated by a dazzling glance
Almost like a sudden blast
You rose from the gutter
To illuminate the night
You taught me how to turn invisible
How to blend in with the scene
Everything's alive and conscious
(Conscious, conscious)
Listen to the sheer breathing
The image of all that's pure
Hide beyond the obvious
It's the reflections of the real laws
You taught me how to turn invisible
How to blend in with the scene
To maintain balance we must go unnoticed
(Unnoticed)
Never alter the atmosphere
[Chorus:]
Feel the shine inside the core
Emotions come back to live
Let's resurrect intuition
Once burnt out
Sharp your limited perception
Try to feel the things
That you can't see
The precious gift you are
A compass in the dark
Syntonized we can never get lost
[Chorus:]
Feel the shine inside the core
Emotions come back to live
Let's resurrect intuition
Once burnt out
Total disconnection from the natural world
Never will we reach full growth
You gave me the drop that shakes
Every feeling inside
[Solo]
[Chorus:]
Feel the shine inside the core
Emotions come back to live
Let's resurrect intuition
Once burnt out
