William Holden (April 17, 1918 – November 12, 1981) was an American actor. Holden won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1954 and the Emmy Award for Best Actor in 1974. One of the most popular and well known movie stars of all time, Holden was one of the biggest box office draws of the 1950s, he was named one of the "Top 10 Stars of the Year" six times (1954–1958, 1961) and appeared on the American Film Institute's AFI's 100 Years…100 Stars list as number 25. He starred in some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films of all time, including such blockbusters as Sunset Boulevard, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Wild Bunch, The Towering Inferno, and Network.
Holden was born William Franklin Beedle, Jr. in O'Fallon, Illinois, the son of Mary Blanche (née Ball), a schoolteacher, and William Franklin Beedle, Sr., an industrial chemist. He had two younger brothers, Robert and Richard. Holden's paternal great-grandmother, Rebecca Westfield, was born in England in 1817, while some of his mother's ancestors settled in Virginia's Lancaster County after emigrating from England in the 17th century. Growing up, Holden was raised in the Methodist church, and while some sources cite him as a Congregationalist, Holden identified himself as a Methodist throughout his life. His family moved to South Pasadena when he was three.

Audrey Hepburn: [after receiving an Academy Award] I would like to thank my mother, who taught me to stand up straight, sit erect, use discipline with wine and sweets, and only smoke six cigarettes a day.
Truman Capote: [Watching Audrey continually fail to eat the breakfast pastry - in front of Tiffany and Co] See why I didn't want Hepburn for this? She can't eat. Marilyn Monroe is who I wanted. Marilyn Monroe knows how to eat.
Plot
Emory works in advertising, and is beginning to crack-up. His latest idea is honesty, e.g. "Volvos, Yes they are boxy, but they're safe". This doesn't go down too well with the boss, so Emory is sent to a psychiatric hospital to 'recover'. Meanwhile, back at the office, Emory's work is accidentally sent to the printers. His ads are a huge success. But now Emory has fallen for Kathy (another patient) and so doesn't want to leave.

A comedy about truth in advertising.
[Reading a magazine ad]::Drucker: "Paramount Pictures presents 'The Freak.' This movie won't just scare you, it will fuck you up for life." I want to know how the fuck the word "fuck" gets in the New York fucking Times!
Stephen: We can't level, you crazy bastard, we're in advertising!
Robles: Porsche. It's a little too small to get laid IN, but you get laid the minute you get out!
Kathy: You may think phone service stinks since deregulation, but don't mess with us, because we're all you've got. In fact, if we fold, you'll have no damn phones. AT&T; - we're tired of taking your crap!
[Drucker is being interviewed on Larry King's TV program]::Charles Drucker: Total honesty in advertising began as a vision I had when I was a young ad man in Milwaukee...::Emory Leeson: I don't believe that jerk!::Saabs: I like Larry King!::Emory Leeson: I'm talking about Drucker! He took all the credit!
Charles Drucker: Harris. Say something honest, no holds barred. GO!::Harris: I like... small boys.::Charles Drucker: About the product, you fucking idiot!
Kathy: Pretty girls are breaking everybody's back.::Emory Leeson: But you're pretty. I mean, really pretty.::Kathy: Yes, but I don't have the problems normally associated with prettiness... because, when I was a child, I looked like Ed McMahon.
Kathy: Who here wants to be an ad-man?::[several hands go up]::Emory Leeson: Who here wants to be a fire engine?::[everyone raises their hands, with several standing and commenting things like "Ooh, I do!" and "Me! Pick me!"]
George: [character can't say anything except variations on "Hello"] Hello. How the hell are ya?
Kathy: Hold me. Please hold me.::Emory Leeson: I am holding you.::Kathy: I know, but it's a woman thing. I have to say it.
Plot
Dozens of star and character-actor cameos and a message about the Variety Club (show-business charity) are woven into a framework about two hopeful young ladies who come to Hollywood, exchange identities, and cause comic confusion (with slapstick interludes) throughout the Paramount studio.
