(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) UC San Diego astrophysicist Brian Keating presents cosmological observations that have revealed a mysterious universe, pointing to the startling possibility that our cosmos might be just the most insignificant speck of what is now called “the Multiverse.” New telescopes such as the BICEP based in Antarctica hint at an infinite universe with the possibility of unimaginable fecundity, yet devoid of life other than here on Earth. Keating explores what this implies about free will in an infinite universe, with infinite degrees of freedom and choices. Series: "Degrees of Freedom" [3/2015] [Humanities] [Science] [Show ID: 29100]
When no one is looking, a particle has near limitless potential: it can be nearly anywhere. But measure it, and the particle snaps to one position. How do subatomic objects shed their quantum weirdness? Experts in the field of physics, including David Z. Albert, Sean Carroll, Sheldon Goldstein, Ruediger Schack, and moderator Brian Greene, discuss the history of quantum mechanics, current theories in the field, and possibilities for the future. The holy grail of physics has been to merge each of its fundamental branches into a unified “theory of everything” that would explain the functioning and existence of the universe. The last step toward this goal is to reconcile general relativity with the principles of quantum mechanics, a quest that has thus far eluded physicists. Will physics ever be able to develop an all-encompassing theory, or should we simply acknowledge that science will always have inherent limitations as to what can be known? Should new theories be validated solely on the basis of calculations that can never be empirically tested? Can we ever truly grasp the implications of modern physics when the basic laws of nature do not always operate according to our standard paradigms? Featuring physicists Katherine Freese, Marcelo Gleiser, and Max Tegmark. Hosted by Steve Paulson. December 10, 2014 The New York Academy of Sciences

Inflationary Cosmology: Is Our Universe Part of a Multiverse? Inflationary cosmology gives a very plausible explanation for many features of our universe, including its uniformity, its mass density, and the patterns of the ripples that are observed in the cosmic microwave background. Most versions of inflation, however, imply that our universe is not unique, but is part of a possibly infinite multiverse. Guth talks about how inflation works, and why he believes that the possibility of a multiverse should be taken seriously. A lecture on the development of science of the standard model of high energy particle physics given to some of the CERN faculty for a demonstration of how this kind of complex science should be lectured to those with any level of science/physics background from laypeople to experts who want to keep up with current discoveries outside their field. Professor Brian Cox of Manchester University and contributor to the LHC's ATLAS and LHCb experiments, is one of the best public educators of physics of our time. He has a huge charisma and character to keep an audience's attention to fundamental topics in physics, keeping the sense of wonder in the content that is sometimes is sucked out while at the same time keeping the content from being too simplified. His talks are always very good and try to include as many people as possible into scientific discovery and the wonders of nature which shape our individual understanding and our civilization into new frontiers. Any of his tv series, including "Wonders of the Solar System", and his books including my favorite "The Quantum Universe: Everything That Can Happen Does Happen", co-authored by Jeff Forshaw are also must haves for any scientist young or old.

Rubbish physics as a replacement for a good game. Typical.
From the discovery of new galaxies and nearly undetectable dark energy to the quantum entanglement of particles across the universe, new findings in physics naturally elicit a sense of awe and wonder. For the founders of modern physics — from Einstein and Bohr to Heisenberg, Pauli, and Bohm — a fascination with deeper questions of meaning and ultimate reality led some of them to explore esoteric traditions and metaphysics. More recently, however, physicists have largely shunned such philosophical and spiritual associations. What can contemporary physics offer us in the quest to understand our place in the universe? Has physics in some ways become a religion unto itself that rejects the search for existential meaning? Featuring astrophysicists Adam Frank and Priyamvada Natarajan, historian of science David Kaiser, and philosopher of physics Tim Maudlin. Hosted by Steve Paulson. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the giant particle accelerator at the CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, will restart operations in 2015, at higher energies and intensities than ever before. In its first run, the LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS discovered the long-sought Higgs boson. Now, researchers are gearing up to search for new and even more exotic phenomena. Many of the possibilities involve particles that decay to the bottom quark, a rare and unusual species of quark with a distinctive appearance in particle detectors. Identifying and measuring bottom quarks in LHC collisions requires extremely high-speed silicon pixel detectors. In this lecture, SLAC's Michael Kagan describes the cutting-edge technology used to image bottom quarks and its use in the search for new types of elementary particles that might appear at very high energies. About the Speaker: Michael Kagan studied physics and mathematics at the University of Michigan, graduating in 2006. He obtained his PhD from Harvard University in 2012 for his work on measurements of the W and Z bosons with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. He joined SLAC in 2012 as a research associate. In this role, he has spent a large portion of his time at CERN helping to build a new layer of high-speed silicon pixel detectors for the ATLAS experiment. He also works on improving pattern recognition algorithms for finding b quarks in ATLAS data and using these b quarks to study Higgs bosons and search for exotic signatures of new physics.

Fay Dowker speaks at a Perimeter Institute Public Lecture on November 2, 2011. Black holes are hot! This discovery made by Stephen Hawking ties together gravity, spacetime, quantum matter, and thermal systems into the beautiful and exciting science of "Black Hole Thermodynamics". Its beauty lies in the powerful way it speaks of the unity of physics. The excitement arises because it tells us that there is something lacking in our understanding of spacetime and, at the same time, gives us a major clue as to what the missing ingredient should be. Theoretical physicists at Perimeter Institute and elsewhere are pioneering a proposal, known as Causal Set Theory, for the structure held by these most fundamental atoms of spacetime. In this talk, Professor Dowker describes black hole thermodynamics and argue that it is telling us that spacetime itself is granular or "atomic" at very tiny scales. More Perimeter Public Lectures can be found at: http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/en/Outreach/Public_Lectures/View_Past_Public_Lectures/

What is Field (physics)? A documentary report all about Field (physics) for the blind and visually impaired or for homework/assignment. A field is a physical quantity that has a value for each point in space and time. For example, in a weather forecast, the wind velocity is described by assigning a vector to each point on a map. Each vector represents the speed and direction of the movement of air at that point. ABC News 2015-03-25Physics (from Ancient Greek: φύσις physis "nature") is a natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion through spacetime, along with related concepts such as energy and force. More broadly, it is the general analysis of nature, conducted in order to understand how the universe behaves.
Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines, perhaps the oldest through its inclusion of astronomy. Over the last two millennia, physics was a part of natural philosophy along with chemistry, certain branches of mathematics, and biology, but during the Scientific Revolution in the 16th century, the natural sciences emerged as unique research programs in their own right. Physics intersects with many interdisciplinary areas of research, such as biophysics and quantum chemistry, and the boundaries of physics are not rigidly defined. New ideas in physics often explain the fundamental mechanisms of other sciences, while opening new avenues of research in areas such as mathematics and philosophy.
Michio Kaku (加来 道雄, Kaku Michio?, born January 24, 1947) is an American theoretical physicist, the Henry Semat Professor of Theoretical Physics in the City College of New York of City University of New York, a co-founder of string field theory, a futurist, and a "communicator" and "popularizer" of science. He has written several books about physics and related topics; he has made frequent appearances on radio, television, and film; and he writes extensive online blogs and articles. He has written two New York Times best sellers, Physics of the Impossible (2008) and Physics of the Future (2011). He has hosted several TV specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery Channel, and the Science Channel.
Kaku was born in San Jose, California to Japanese immigrant parents. His grandfather came to the United States to take part in the clean-up operation after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake[citation needed]. His father was born in California but was educated in Japan and spoke little English. Both his parents were put in the Tule Lake War Relocation Center, where they met and where his two brothers were born.
Head in the clouds, feet on the ground,
Earth falling out beneath me, fire in the sky
Singing my brow, it's nowhere safe.
Take me where I'm weightless
Up there in outer space.
From up here, everything below is peaceful.
I'm sincere, when I say I truly miss home.
Physics is a bitch cause I'm up now,
But eventually I gotta come down.
Gimmie one good reason
not to reach those heights again.
Gimmie one good reason
Cause I'm finally nearing the end.
So will you be there,
Whenever I do come down
Will you be there?
A moment's peace, a sigh of relief
Not but what-ifs and maybes unanswered,
While on my feet.
So pick me up, take me to far reaches
While astronomers eyes are shut.
Cause I'm here, I'm shaking in the distance.
No fear, blanked out of existence
Physics is a bitch, the higher I get
The faster and farther I plummet.
Gimmie one good reason
Not to reach those heights again.
Gimmie one good reason
Cause I'm finally nearing the end.
Make me believe I shouldn't risk it all again.
Gimmie one good reason
Cause I'm finally over the edge.
So will you be there,
Whenever I do come down
Will you be there?
Head in the clouds,
Feet on the ground.
Earth falling out,
Never come down...
Gimmie one good reason
Not to reach those heights again.
Gimmie one good reason
Cause I'm finally nearing the end.
Make me believe I shouldn't risk it all again.
Gimmie one good reason
Cause I'm finally over the edge.
So will you be there,
Whenever I do come down
Will you be there?
You rock and ruin
Your odds were thin
