It can connect you to anybody anywhere. Through a network that spans the globe, steeped in controversy when invented, it's now a lifeline, an entertainment hub and an unparalleled tool for human interaction. But privacy isn't assured. Undeniably essential to modern life, the telephone is the most important, influential, and effective communication tool ever developed. Witness this invention's unbelievably dramatic true story - one of false starts, close calls, and a bitter rivalry. The development of the telephone has changed the way we live, and how we communicate with each other. This documentary takes a look at the history of Alexander Graham Bell's remarkable innovation, offering some startling insights into how the telephone became such a commonly used object. Among the revelations are facts and figures about Bell's original design, and how he almost lost out in the race to patent his invention. Also included is a look at how the use of the telephone has developed over the years, especially in relation to the internet. All his life, Alexander Graham Bell was driven by a desire to create a machine that would make it easier for the deaf to speak and hear. Using an actual human ear from a cadaver to understand the nature of sound, Bell even enlisted a young Thomas Edison to help invent what would become the telephone. Exploring how one man's speaking device has grown into the technological web that links humankind, this thrilling program also revisits the race between Bell and rival Elisha Gray - who was building a similar design but ultimately filed the history-changing patent just two hours after Bell. Some of the historical developments of the first telephone, as well as the continuing innovations that have become the cellular phone systems that we use today. More than just history of telephone technology, this program examines a wide variety of contemporary aspects of telephone communication. There is an interesting chronology of mobile or portable phone designs as they have become increasing smaller in size, lighter in weight and equipped with more advanced features of larger memory, pictures, video, MP 3 players, and text messaging. 'Re-Cellular', one of the largest cell phone recycling facilities in the world is visited and the process by which cell phones are made ready to be used again is demonstrated. Another interesting aspect of this program are the examples of how cellular networks have developed, with computer generated models showing how cell phone towers and cellular networks function. There is also a discussion of GPS, or Global Positioning Systems, and how GPS chips function when they are inside a cell phone. Historical events surrounding the earliest forms of electromagnetic speech devices and the eventual patent by Alexander Graham Bell for the first telephone are also included. Some of the details surrounding this first patent, and the debate over what other inventors' actually contributed to the development of the first telephone is examined. The eventual creation of American Telephone & Telegraph (or AT&T;) and the advances that lead to the creation of a telephone network throughout the country and long distance phone calls in nicely presented. The development of coaxial phone lines, transatlantic telephone cables, fiber optics, and finally the creation in 1962 of AT&T;'s first Telecommunications Star Satellite, is also included. Alexander Graham Bell wanted people to answer the phone by saying "Hoy-Hoy." Thomas Edison argued for the commonly used "Hello." Edison won. In the 11th century BC, the Greeks lit hilltop bonfires to send news. Now, just three satellites are enough to link any two places in the world at the speed of light.

We apologize, but still encourage you to watch the whole thing. Just turn the volume up a bit. In the summer of 1930, nine telephone company executives from all over the United States assembled at the New Canaan, Connecticut farm belonging to Harry Bates Thayer, former president of both AT&T; and Western Electric. This film was first shown at Telephone Pioneers Annual Convention, held in Los Angeles, November, 1930. Five of the men in this film were in attendance at the convention; and in the film are eight of the nine past presidents of the Telephone Pioneers organization (the ninth, Theodore Vail, had passed away in 1920) — Pioneers was founded in 1911. Each man in turn gives a little history of how they got into the telephone business. All had deep accumulated experience from the very early days of telephony in America. In no particular order, here are the men who appear in the film: * Edward Kimball Hall, Former Vice-President of AT&T; — Hall is far better known for his work coaching college baseball and football, and developing the first football players' code of conduct. He also was at AT&T; until 1930. He's a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. * L.H. Kinnard, President of the Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania. * Harry Bates Thayer, former president of AT&T; — Thayer started at Western Electric in 1879 as a shipping clerk. In 1896 he helped negotiate the founding of Nippon Electric Company (later NEC), which had substantial investment from Western Electric. It was on his watch that Bell Labs was formed in 1925; Thayer resigned from AT&T; that same year. * William R. Abbott, Chairman of the Board, Illinois Bell Telephone Company — Abbott started in the telephone business way back in 1888, in Westchester, NY; he lived until 1950. * James T. Moran, President of Southern New England Telephone Company — Moran, a lawyer, had been involved with the phone company since 1884, but initially in a legal, not administrative capacity. Eventually he moved into the company and in 1917 became President of SNET. * J.J. Carty, former Vice-President of AT&T; — Carty oversaw the first television broadcast over the phone lines in 1927, set up novel long-distance "Telephone Banquets" in the 1910s, and, surprisingly, opposed the innovation of the dial telephone. * Ben Stalker Read, President of the Southern Bell Telephone Company — Read was also President of the Mountain States Tel. and Tel. Co., and had worked in the phone business all over the country: Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and more. He started as a messenger boy. * Albert l. Salt, former President of the Graybar Company (who does not appear on the CT farm, but was filmed separately) — The Graybar company was spun off from Western Electric in 1925, and handled their electrical appliance market, whereas Western Electric continued to work as part of the Bell System. Graybar Electric is still in business, and was named for the founders of Western Electric, Elisha Gray and Enos Barton. Note: the film says nine, the ninth here may be P.L. Thompson, public relations man, who introduces the film to the audience. Footage Courtesy of AT&T; Archives and History Center, Warren, NJ

noodls 2013-07-18Elisha ( /ɨˈlaɪʃə/;Hebrew: אֱלִישָׁע, Modern Elisha Tiberian ʼĔlîšāʻ ; "My God is salvation", Greek: Ἐλισσαῖος, Elissaîos or Ἐλισαιέ, Elisaié, Arabic: الْيَسَع Elyasaʻ) is a prophet mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and the Qur'an. His name is commonly transliterated into English as Elisha via Hebrew, Eliseus via Greek and Latin, or Alyasa via Arabic.
Elisha was a prophet of the Northern Kingdom of Israel who was active during the reign of Joram, Jehu, Jehoahaz, and Jehoash (Joash).
Elisha was the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah; he became the attendant and disciple of Elijah (1 Kings 19:16–19), and after Elijah was taken up into the whirlwind, he was accepted as the leader of the sons of the prophets, and became noted in Israel. He possessed, according to his own request, "a double portion" of Elijah's spirit (2 Kings 2:9); and for sixty years (892–832 BC) held the office of "prophet in Israel" (2 Kings 5:8).
His name first occurs in the command given to Elijah to anoint him as his successor (1 Kings 19:16). After learning, in the cave on Mount Horeb, that Elisha, the son of Shaphat, had been selected by God as his successor in the prophetic office, Elijah set out to make known the Divine will. On his way from Sinai to Damascus, Elijah found Elisha "one of them that were ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen". Elisha delayed only long enough to kill the yoke of oxen, whose flesh he boiled with the very wood of his plough. He went over to him, threw his mantle over Elisha's shoulders, and at once adopted him as a son, investing him with the prophetic office. Elisha accepted this call about four years before the death of Israel's King Ahab. For the next seven or eight years Elisha became Elijah's close attendant until Elijah was taken up into heaven. During all these years we hear nothing of Elisha except in connection with the closing scenes of Elijah's life.
Elisha Gray (August 2, 1835 – January 21, 1901) was an American electrical engineer who co-founded the Western Electric Manufacturing Company. Gray is best known for his development of a telephone prototype in 1876 in Highland Park, Illinois and is considered by some writers to be the true inventor of the variable resistance telephone, despite losing out to Alexander Graham Bell for the telephone patent.
Gray is also considered to be the father of the modern music synthesizer, and was granted over 70 patents for his inventions.
Born into a Quaker family in Barnesville, Ohio, Gray was brought up on a farm. He spent several years at Oberlin College where he experimented with electrical devices. Although Gray was not a graduate of Oberlin College, he taught electricity and science at Oberlin and built laboratory equipment for Oberlin science departments.
In 1862 while at Oberlin, Gray met and married Delia Minerva Shepard.
In 1865 Gray invented a self-adjusting telegraph relay that automatically adapted to varying insulation of the telegraph line.
Elisha Ann Cuthbert (born November 30, 1982)[citation needed] is a Canadian film and television actress. Cuthbert is the former co-host of the Canadian children's television series Popular Mechanics for Kids. In 1998, she had her first film role in Airspeed. She followed this in 2003 with a role in Old School. Her most prominent role is as Kim Bauer in the American action-thriller television series 24. Since 2011, she has been starring as Alex Kerkovich on the ABC comedy series Happy Endings.
Cuthbert was born in Calgary, Alberta, daughter of Patricia, a homemaker, and Kevin, an automotive design engineer. She has two younger siblings, Jonathan and Lee-Ann. She grew up in Greenfield Park, near Montreal, Quebec. In 2000, she graduated from Centennial Regional High School and moved to Los Angeles at 17 to act.[citation needed]
When she was 9, Cuthbert started modeling children's clothing and also became a foot model. She made her first televised appearance as an extra in the horror-themed series for children, Are You Afraid of the Dark?; she later became a regular on the show.[citation needed] Cuthbert co-hosted Popular Mechanics for Kids, filmed in Montreal. Her reporting captured the attention of Hillary Clinton, who invited her to the White House.
