An unusual and controversial perspective on the Ulster Scots language and culture in a one hour documentary film, directed by an Irish language activist. Deaglán Ó Mocháin's film, The Hamely Tongue -- Cultúr Ceilte (Hidden Culture) on TG4 on Wednesday 20th January at 9.30pm, argues for a more nuanced perspective on Ulster Scots than the normal broad swipes at the language that prevail in the media or on web forums. When the term 'Ulster Scots' is mentioned the default position is often humour -- that this is a Ballymena accent, 'Oor Willie' or 'the Broons' of Glasgow, and a series of made up words; or anger -- that this is a pretence, a vehicle to counter Irish, a financial scam, the language of the DUP. Ó Mocháin's film argues for a more nuanced perspective on Ulster Scots by excavating an exciting and radical history -- the history of 1798 in the north, and the flowering of intellectual development associated with the enlightenment and the French and American revolutions. At the core of this film is respect for the choices that people make in terms of their identity, an issue that is at the heart of modern day Irish language activism. One of the subjects of the film, musician and ethnomusicologist Gordon Ramsey, articulates this position in an interview where he says: "Ulster Scots identity can be viewed as an alternative to Irishness, but it can also be viewed as a particular way of being Irish, and for some Loyalists, Ulster Scots identity offers a way to be Irish on their own terms without having to accept any of the baggage of Nationalism that has sometimes been associated with Irishness" Ulster Scots was, controversially, given language status, by the European Bureau of Lesser Used Languages, a respected body that operates to support and promote lesser used languages throughout Europe. They place Ulster Scots, and Irish, and dozens of other languages on a register of threatened voices. Ulster Scots was, again somewhat controversially, formally recognised as deserving of special support within the Belfast Agreement in 1998. This Agreement was widely endorsed in an All Ireland referendum in the summer of 1998. The film, Cultúr Ceilte, follows narrator, Seimí MacAindreasa, a native Irish speaker from Belfast, on a journey through modern day Ulster Scots. Some of the people he meets are long standing activists, and have been preserving and promoting the language for years -- recording older members of their community, translating the bible, encouraging people to take an interest in traditional music. Others are new to the concept, and are slowly working through their relationship to the language and culture. MacAindreasa talks to historians and academics about James Orr, one of the 'weaver poets', as John Hewitt described them -- working class intellectuals who wrote in Scots and who were often of a radical nature. Orr was a United Irishman, a section leader under the command of Henry Joy McCracken, and was forced into a period of exile after the Battle of Antrim in 1798. His work is viewed as being on a par with that master of Scots verse, Robbie Burns. MacAindreasa also goes on to meet the modern day Orr -- James Fenton, a retired schoolmaster and the author of 'The Hamely Tongue' - a compilation of Ulster Scots words and phrases gathered over thirty years. This is widely viewed as an exemplary piece of work, recording the core aspects of a language in rapid decline. James also writes poetry in his mother tongue, and three of these are featured throughout the programme. Director, Ó Mocháin's perspective is that people have the right to define themselves in a manner of their own choosing, and should be supported in those choices. Ulster Scots may be a language in decline, but to those who express an interest in multi-culturalism, and who support the preservation of minority cultures, he believes that this should act as a motivating factor to ensure that Ulster Scots is properly supported and nurtured. The first act in this supporting and nurturing has to be a greater understanding and awareness of the multi-faceted nature of modern Ulster Scots. The Hamely Tongue - Cultúr Ceilte is a Soilsiú Films production for TG4, made with the support of The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (Sound & Vision), Foras na Gaeilge and The Ulster-Scots Agency.

Well lads I wrote a song for the town of BOYLE and it's called THE MAN WHO CAME IN FROM THE DARK. It's based on the story of John Reilly, the traveller from around Boyle who was the keeper of a treasure trove of ancient ballads he had learned from his parents around the campfires of the West of Ireland. Scholars and Song Collectors came to Boyle to record him and learn his songs, including a young Christy Moore who went on make famous versions of John's songs such as THE WELL BELOW THE VALLEY, THE RAGGLE TAGGLE GYPSY, and LORD BAKER. The song is rockin! It's going down a bomb lads and is also the title track of my new album! We had a fabulous time in Wynne's Bar in Boyle and this first program in the new SPILLANE AN FÁNAÍ series goes to air on TG4 TUESDAY OCTOBER 21st at 10pm repeated Oct 23rd at 9pm. DON'T MISS IT! Red Empire |Deliver Me | Róisín TG4 Following the release of their well-received third EP, ‘The Truth Of You’, Red Empire have just finished their debut album, 'INHALE'. Previously chosen as the nationwide UTV Radio Group's 'Select Irish Artist of the Month', which garnered much national attention back in March 2014, the follow-up EP will not disappoint. In addition to this the band were chosen as 98FM's 'Home Grown Heroes' and DCFM's 'Tune of the week' and were earmarked for success on RTÉ Radio 1's ‘John Murray Show' and Today FM's 'The Mix-Up'. The forthcoming album, which is set for a mid-2015 release date, has captured the band’s trademark well-crafted melodic sound. It has also received the endorsement of numerous music industry heavyweights such as John Hartmann (ex-manager of The Eagles and Sonny and Cher). ‘The Truth of You’ contains the song of the same name and two additional tracks. TG4,1984 Mexican plane makes crash landing,Mexico Ireland, Mallow Race Course Irish Examiner: 1984 Captain Ruben Ocana’s Gulfstream II made an unexpected landing on Mallow Racecourse, Ray Ryan recalls THE ground was still damp from a slight overnight frost when Captain Ruben Ocana stepped out of the Gulfstream II executive jet he had landed a short time earlier on the five furlong straight at Mallow Racecourse. “I will be out of here once the ground dries out,” he told me, but, of course, that was not the way it worked out. He and his crew were stranded in the town for 39 days as a runway was laid to get the 15-seat luxury jet airborne again. As the days and weeks passed, I got to know Captain Ocana well. We talked about aviation and military history and shared stories about the cultural differences of his native Mexico and Ireland. It was a friendship that continued to the day he died. He was well versed in the Irish men who fought for Mexico in the 1846-1848 war against America and how their “Batallón de San Patricio” (St Patrick’s Battalion) was still revered in his country. I still have the rough sketches he drew in my shorthand notebook showing some of their battle terrain. Captain Ocana even saw the humour of being stranded in Mallow and he captured it in some of the delightful cartoons he drew for this newspaper group. One shows him standing in a room wearing a belted rain coat, holding a closed umbrella dripping with water and looking at a weather forecast wall-chart depicting more wet weather heading towards Ireland. The artist’s bubble that he placed above his head in the cartoon showed an image of his luxury £8m jet floating down the Blackwater River in one of Mallow’s famous floods. Captain Ocana and his crew brought a spark of brightness to the community.. Crowds flocked to the racecourse to see the aircraft and wonder how it was going to become airborne again. That glow continued long after the adventure was over. Among the visitors was Monsignor James Horan, who was at the time trying to build a runway in Knock to facilitate passenger aircraft. He visited Mallow Racecourse thinking he would see a gravel path from which Captain Ocana’s plane had taken off. Instead he found a lovely airstrip. The irony was not lost on the dynamic priest with the beaming smile and Russian-style hat. Mallow, he said, had the better idea — get the jet in first and then build the runway. Captain Ocana, who later returned to Mallow with his wife and family, never lost touch. He regularly corresponded with the friends he had made there. He spent his retirement in Mexico painting with water colours, playing music, reading, singing, writing and thinking of Mallow every day. He even painted a passport that stated: “Ruben Ocana – Citizen of Ireland.” Shortly before he died, aged 81, in 2009, he again recalled for me all the nice memories he had brought back with him from Ireland, especially Mallow, and expressed a wish to return. Sadly, it was not to be. However, his daughter Marianna, a teacher, honoured her father’s wish in 2010 and came to the town where she was accorded a civic reception by mayor Willie O’Regan and the town council. She visited the racecourse, where her father landed the jet, met many of his old friends and was made presentations. She thanked the people of Mallow in his name and that of her family for the kindness they had shown to him. “During his last days at the hospital, he asked me about you,” she told the townspeople. “My father had never come to Ireland before his emergency landing in 1983, but he had great references about Irish people. He knew you were kind and friendly, and here, he confirmed it.” A safe landing and a warm welcome Gerard Callanan witnessed the plane landing, at 8:15am, and welcomed the occupants. The unusual events that followed inspired a movie, The Runway, in 2010. The 15-seater luxury jet had flown the Atlantic from Newark, New Jersey and was headed for Munich, in Germany. Its crew was carrying four businessmen. Strong winds added an hour to its flight time, cutting into its fuel reserves. After a couple of missed approaches to Shannon Airport in Co Clare, which was under heavy fog, the twin-engine jet was diverted to Cork Airport. The captain of the plane, Mexican Ruben Ocaña, knew he did not have fuel to make it as far as Cork Airport, so he was redirected to Mallow racecourse. When he landed, he had only three minutes of fuel left. It was 8.15am. Gerard Callanan, who owns a service station in Mallow, witnessed the landing. “I was opening up the garage at the time,” he says. http://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/features/humaninterest/surprise-jet-arrival-left-lasting-legacy-in-town-228622.html http://youtu.be/z-D49MvvjT4

Ní chluinim fuaim lachan ná gé ann, N á iolar ag éamh cois cuain, Ná fiú na mbeacha chun saothair, 'Thugadh mil agus céir don slua. Níl ceol binn milis na n-éan ann, Le hamharc an lae 'dul uainn, Ná an chuaichín i mbarra na gcraobh ann, A chuireadh an saol chun suain. Tá ceo ag titim ar chraobh ann, N ach nglanann le gréin ná lá, Tá smúit a' titim ón spéir ann, Is a chuid uisce go léir a' trá. Níl coill, níl cuileann, níl caor ann, Ach clocha 'gus maol chlochán, Páirc ná foraoise gan craobh ann, Is d'imigh an géim chun fáin! Áitím ar Mhuire is ar Íosa, Go dtaga sí arís chugainn slán, Go mbeidh rincí fada 'gabháil timpeall, Ceol fidilí (veidhlín) is tinte cnámh, Go dtógfar an baile seo ár sinsear, Cill Chais breá, arís go hard, Is go brách nó go dtiocfaidh an díle N ach bhfeicfear é 'rís ar lár. Anois mar bharr ar gach míghreann, Chuaigh prionsa na nGael thar sáil' , Anonn le hainnir na míne, 'Fuair gradam sa Fhrainc 's sa Spáinn, Anois tá a cuallacht á caoineadh, 'D'fhaigheadh airgead buí agus bán, Is í nach dtógfadh seilbh na ndaoine, Is í cara na bhfíor bhochtán. Now what will we do for timber, with the last of the woods laid low? There's no talk of Cill Chais or its household and its bell will be struck no more. That dwelling where lived the good lady most honoured and joyous of women--- earls made their way over wave there and the sweet Mass once was said. Ducks' voices nor geese do I hear there, nor the eagle's cry over the bay, nor even the bees at their labour bringing honey and wax to us all. No birdsong there, sweet and delightful, as we watch the sun go down, nor cuckoo on top of the branches settling the world to rest. A mist on the boughs is descending neither daylight nor sun can clear A stain from the sky is descending and the waters receding away. No hazel nor holly nor berry but boulders and bare stone heaps, not a branch in our neighbourly haggard, and the game all scattered and gone. Then a climax to all of our misery: the prince of the Gael is abroad oversea with that maiden of mildness who found honour in France and Spain. Her company now must lament her, who would give yellow money and white--- she who'd never take land from the people but was friend to the truly poor. I call upon Mary and Jesus to send her safe home again: dances we'll have in long circles and bone-fires and violin music; that Cill Chais, the townland of our fathers, will rise handsome on high once more and till doom or the Deluge returns we'll see it no more laid low. *** Subscribe! tóg sintús le do thoil ! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=TGcoa !! Céard iad na cruthanna éagsúla seo? What are these shapes? Pocoyo is trying to guess the shapes of different objects. As Gaeilge, in Irish, Beochan, animation, réamhscoil, pre-school, naíonra, kindergarten, foghlaim, learn, paiste, paistí, children, cartún, cartoon, clár beochana Faoin naíonán óg a mbíonn éadach gorm i gcónaí air é Pocoyo. Cá mbeadh Pocoyo gan a chairde Elly, an eilifint bhándearg, Pato an lacha bhuí, Loula an madra, (Éan Suain) Sleep Bird agus go leor eile. Pocoyo, the curious toddler dressed all in blue, joins Pato the yellow duck, Elly the pink elephant, Loula the dog, Sleepy Bird and many others in learning new things and having fun. http://www.pocoyo.com/ Oifigiúil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocoyo Pocoyo is a Spanish pre-school animated television series. Two series have been produced, between 2005-2007,each consisting of 52 seven-minute episodes. I t is about Pocoyo, a 3-year-old boy, interacting with his friends Pato (a duck), Elly (an elephant) and Loula (a dog). Viewers are encouraged to recognise situations that Pocoyo is in, and things that are going on with or around him. The narrator usually speaks explicitly to the viewers and to the characters as well. Each character has its own distinctive dance and also a specific sound (usually from a musical instrument), and most episodes end with the characters dancing. Many episodes also involve parties. In 2006, Pocoyo was awarded the Cristal Award for the "Best TV Production" at the 30th Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Pocoyo's name was provided by David Cantolla, one of the creators, after his three-year-old daughter used it in her nightly prayers saying "Eres niño poco yo" ("You're a child little me") instead of "Eres niñocomo yo ("You're a child like me"). "Pocoyó" could roughly be translated to English as "little me", "not much me" or "a little bit me", though a made-up construction. Main characters : Pocoyo is the eponymous main character of the series. He is a young boy full of curiosity who loves to play games and discover new things. He is very acrobatic and moves at a quick speed. He is always shown wearing blue clothes and a hat. He is three years old; his "birthday" is October 14. His best friends are Pato, Elly, and Loula. He has a vehicle called the Vamoosh which he can use to travel under the water, in the air or through space. Although he is very friendly and sweet and almost always in a good mood, Pocoyo is also highly self-centered, distracted by the simplest things, easily frustrated, frequently jealous of his friends, and disobedient, but tries his hardest to fight his flaws and learn morals. The Narrator speaks over the entire show, and often communicates directly with the characters. Pocoyo has a good relationship with him, and is always to delighted to see (hear) him. The narrator is also at times physically involved in the events of the episodes, making him more of an heard-but-not-seen character rather than a strict narrator. Pato is a yellow duck who wears nothing but a small green hat. He has a fondness for gardening, and is often seeing watering plants and flowerbeds. Pato means duck in Spanish, Portuguese, Filipino, Tok Pisin and Papiamento. He is a favourite amongst the young children due to his enjoyable dancing and the fact that his beak turns 360 degrees. Although friendly, Pato is the most fussy and impatient character (indicated by his beak that bends in an angle when disappointed or shocked); on occasion he completely loses his temper, jumping up and down and quacking furiously with his beak spinning rapidly. He is used as a jackhammer or missile and can become a helicopter. Elly is a pink elephant who always wears a blue back-pack. She loves making biscuits and tea, and she also has a doll that she loves very much, her birthday is May 4. Despite her size, she is graceful and gentle, capable of ballet dancing. She is, however, very bossy and generally does things her way. She usually rides around on her pink scooter. Loula is Pocoyo's orange-yellow pet puppy and companion. She is also strictly a dog as she walks on all four of her legs. She sometimes hops as she is walking. Sleepy Bird is a teal-coloured bird. She does little but sleep, and usually flies with her eyes closed. She can be active from time to time, but more often is found asleep or snoozing to her content. Stockhouse 2015-03-16TG4 (Irish: TG Ceathair or TG a Ceathair; pronounced [tiː dʒiː kʲahəɾʲ]) is a public service broadcaster for Irish-language speakers. The channel has been on-air since 31 October 1996 throughout Ireland via analogue and since April 2005 via SKY.
TG4 was formerly known as Teilifís na Gaeilge or TnaG, before a rebranding campaign in 1999. TG4 was the third national station to be launched in Ireland; after RTÉ One in 1961 (as Teilifís Éireann) and RTÉ Two in 1978, and followed by TV3 in 1998. The channel has 800,000 viewers who tune into the channel each day to view a broad programming policy. It has a share of 3% of the national television market. The daily Irish-language programme schedule is its core service: seven hours of programming in Irish supported by a wide range of material in other languages such as English and French.
In 1969, Lelia Doolan, Jack Dowling and Bob Quinn published Sit down and Be Counted, a book describing their campaign for a separate Irish-language television service. Bob Quinn is a maverick film director who produced many documentaries and fiction films through the Irish language on limited budgets, including the first Irish-language feature film Poitín starring Niall Tóibín, Cyril Cusack and Donal McCann.
I know you want it
You wanna hit it
But you can't have it
Oops, can't touch it
Maybe a kiss on these lips
Holding hands it aint nothing
Nasty is what you call me
We get close but you can't handle it
Cuz I'm not maybe what your looking
Cuz I'm not the average kind of girl
I might let you touch me
I might let you hold me
I might even let you kiss me
But you can not take my virginity
I might let you tease me
I might let you squeeze me
I might even let you kiss me
But you can not take my virginity
Can't imagine what it feels like
My friends say it's alright
But then they go and do it all night
But I prefer the merry life
Patience is what you gotta have
That's what it takes to be my man
I'm not like that bad if you like me
Keep it with you then maybe
I might let you touch me
I might let you hold me
