That way, anyone on the network that wants to, can listen on that multicast address and therefore start receiving the video packets. I use UDP to stream the video because it's as if UDP was made for video streaming! And because losing a few (thousand) packets is fine for streams of video. Benefits of using this method: Everyone subscribed to the stream will stay synced with the streaming server, exceptions are that clients can define their own caching time, and therefore be playing the video stream after other clients. Clients can quietly listen for a stream, and when it comes immediately start playing it. Flaws of using this method: Really freaking annoying to use over the internet, you can't use multicast over the internet so you have to use unicast, meaning you have to directly stream to a specific address, and that address has no choice but to receive your packets, even if it isn't interested. And you have to open the UDP port in any nat routers in the way. Audio is so very close to being perfectly in sync it's not even funny, but i can usually hear the sub-millisecond delay. Solution: Mute all but one........ Also, there is probably a bug in VLC that when the UDP stream is cut off (stopped...) vlc just keeps repeating any sound in its buffer and the video just freezes at the last frame it got.
