I stayed one night at the Novotel, Sheffield in March, 2015. It was a Saturday night, I booked a double room for two people with Booking.com for £79.00 (room only). The advertised breakfast price on Booking.com was £13.95, which we were not prepared to pay, however, upon check-in breakfast was offered at £9.95 - if booked before midnight. We decided to go with that option. If you are using Booking.com to book a room here, go for the room only option, and pay for breakfast upon arrival. The hotel is very well situated in Sheffield city centre, a 5-7 minute uphill walk from Sheffield railway station. You can enter from the Station side via the lower ground floor, or from the Winter Gardens side on the upper ground floor. If entering on the lower ground floor there are both stairs and a lift for getting upstairs. Note on the lower ground floor there is also a fitness suite and swimming pool - it is a very small pool, and the changing rooms are tiny, so it's probably better to get changed in your room. You need to get a keycard from reception to unlock the doors to the fitness area and swimming pool. Reception is large, colourful and bright, and the reception staff were all friendly and helpful. We were told upon check-in that an event was taking place and that there may be 'some noise' until midnight. They weren't wrong, it was boom boom boom until just after midnight. We didn't let it bother us, but I can imagine it would be an annoyance to many people. I asked for a room with a view on a high floor, however my view was of student flats next door, not a nice view at all, and I was really disappointed by this. I specifically requested a good view on Booking.com (hoping for a view over the valley), but I didn't bother complaining this time, as we were heading straight out after check-in. The room was the usual high standard that Novotel offer, no complaints really, other than the ironing board and iron taking up 50% of the wardrobe, and their being no small hand washing sink in the toilet room (I find this unhygienic). We did enjoy our stay here, and I would stay again, but I would insist on a room with a better view. Valentines Weekend and a family birthday party gave me a chance to visit South Yorkshire for the weekend and squeeze in two of my favourite hobbies, one was Brighton & Hove Albion and our match at Hillsborough (0-0, enough said), the other a chance to capture the two main line steam tours through the county that weekend. First on the Saturday was the RYTC tour 'The Valentines White Rose' hauled by BOB no.34067 'Tangmere' from London Kings Cross to York and return up the ECML. We see the outward leg working away from the Babworth water stop past the site of the former Scrooby Station. Then, on the Sunday its another RYTC tour, this time 'The Tin Bath' circular tour Preston-Manchester Victoria-Sheffield-Penistone-Copy Pit-Manchester behind Black 5's no.44871 and no.45407 'The lancashire Fusilier', which we see pass through Elsecar station. At the eastern edge of the National Park the land meets the North Sea. For thousands of years rain, ice, wind and waves have carved and shaped this coastline into the scenery we see today. Here you will find sandy beaches, rocky shores, towering cliffs, steep wooded valleys or 'wykes', sheltered bays and fascinating villages. Along this coastline there are many seaside villages with higgledy piggledy cottages and narrow, winding streets clinging onto the cliffs. The villages developed because of the fishing industry. There are only a few fishermen left now but many local people make a living from hotels, cafés, shops and other services for the tourists who visit the coast. Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes are popular villages (or honey pot sites) for visitors. To qualify for the full reward, the women will have to breastfeed until their babies are six months old. Child-grooming scandals similar to Rotherham may have been missed across the country due to inspection failures by Ofsted, MPs have warned. A new report by the Communities and Local Government Committee has warned shortcomings in inspecting Rotherham Council ‘leave serious concerns that organised child sexual exploitation in other local authorities may have been missed’. It says every council in the country should now be re-inspected as soon as possible as a result. Clive Betts, chairman of the committee, said ‘Ofsted’s credibility is now on the line’. Mr Betts added he supports plans for a new inquiry into the conduct of South Yorkshire Police, particularly in light of new claims that the force ‘failed to investigate’ alleged abuse cases in Sheffield. The report found ineffective inspections by Ofsted in Rotherham ‘contributed to a failure to expose the extent of the problem and to detect Rotherham Council’s on-going and tragic inability to combat it on the ground’. MPs have also advised the Government to ask civil servant Louise Casey to do a follow-up inspection of Rotherham Council. They also welcomed the resignation of former council leader Roger Stone, saying his position had been ‘wholly untenable’ and he had ‘no alternative’ but to apologise and resign. Mr Betts said: “The perpetrators bear ultimate responsibility for the sexual exploitation of children in Rotherham but the ineffectiveness of Ofsted’s inspections contributed to a failure to expose the extent of the problem and to detect Rotherham Council’s on-going and tragic inability to combat it on the ground. “The shortcomings in Ofsted’s inspection arrangements until 2013 leave serious concerns that organised child sexual exploitation in other local authorities may have been missed. “It says its new inspection arrangements will pick up child sexual exploitation. Ofsted now needs to re-inspect all local authorities in England at the earliest opportunity to ensure councils have identified and are tackling child sexual exploitation in their communities.” The report found Ofsted inspectors ‘failed to get under the skin of what was happening at Rotherham Council’, with officials not questioned enough and inspections up to 2012 being ‘too short and narrowly focused’. The committee also ruled that it was right for Government-appointed commissioners to take charge of Rotherham Council last month as ‘there was no reasonable prospect of Rotherham itself putting its own house in order’, given the culture of denial uncovered by the Louise Casey inquiry. As part of the process of returning Rotherham to democratic control, the committee has recommended the Government ask Ms Casey to undertake a further inspection to establish whether children’s services at Rotherham have improved. Mr Betts added: “The shocking news that South Yorkshire Police may have known that hundreds of girls were at risk of ongoing sexual abuse in Sheffield but failed to investigate many allegations broke after the Committee agreed the report last week. “In the Committee’s evidence session with Louise Casey, I asked about the position of the police. She said that the police have to step up and accept the same level of responsibility as the local authority. I fully agree. “I am therefore pleased that in response to my suggestion on March 13, Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, announced a full ‘Casey-like’ county-wide inspection of South Yorkshire Police to get to an accepted understanding about the past and whether things have changed. “I hope this will be the first step to restoring public confidence that the police can tackle child sexual exploitation.” The committee’s report also said examinations of the conduct of both present and former Rotherham Council workers in relation to their handling of child abuse cases now needs to be completed by the commissioners, as well as local authorities that now employ senior officers who used to work in the town.

noodls 2015-04-02Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːkʃə/) is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been increasingly undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration, such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire. The county's name is commonly abbreviated as Yorks.
Within the borders of the historic county of Yorkshire are areas which are widely considered to be among the greenest in England, due to the vast stretches of unspoiled countryside in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors and to the open aspect of some of the major cities. Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed God's Own County. The emblem of Yorkshire is the white rose of the English royal House of York, and the most commonly used flag representative of Yorkshire is the White Rose on a dark blue background, which after years of use, was recognised by the Flag Institute on 29 July 2008.Yorkshire Day, held on 1 August, is a celebration of the general culture of Yorkshire, ranging from its history to its own dialect.
South Yorkshire is a metropolitan county in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England. It has a population of 1.29 million. It consists of four metropolitan boroughs: Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and City of Sheffield. South Yorkshire was created on 1 April 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972.
Lying on the east side of the Pennines, South Yorkshire is landlocked, and borders Derbyshire (to the south-west), West Yorkshire (to the northwest), North Yorkshire (to the north), the East Riding of Yorkshire (to the northeast), Lincolnshire (to the east) and Nottinghamshire (to the southeast). The Sheffield Urban Area is the ninth most populous conurbation in the UK, and dominates the western half of South Yorkshire with over half of the county's population living within it.
South Yorkshire County Council was abolished in 1986, and so its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) are now effectively unitary authority areas; however, the metropolitan county, which is some 1,552 square kilometres (599 sq mi), continues to exist in law and as a geographic frame of reference. As a ceremonial county, South Yorkshire has a Lord Lieutenant and a High Sheriff.
Manic Street Preachers are a Welsh alternative rock band formed in 1986 consisting of James Dean Bradfield (lead vocals, lead guitar), Nicky Wire (bass, lyrics), and Sean Moore (drums, percussion). The band is part of the Cardiff music scene and were at their most prominent during the 1990s. They are colloquially known as "The Manics" or simply "Manics". Manic Street Preachers were originally a quartet but primary lyricist and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards vanished on 1 February 1995.
In 1992, the Manics released their debut album, Generation Terrorists. Their combination of androgynous glam punk imagery and critical social lyrics about "culture, alienation, boredom, and despair" soon gained them a loyal following and cult status. The band's later albums retained a leftist politicisation and intellectual lyrical style while adopting a broader alternative rock sound.
Following Edwards' disappearance, Bradfield, Moore, and Wire persisted with Manic Street Preachers and went on to gain critical and commercial success, becoming one of Britain's premier rock bands. Altogether, they have garnered eight Top 10 albums, fifteen Top 10 singles, and have reached number one three times with their 1998 This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours album, the 1998 "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next" single, and the 2000 "The Masses Against the Classes" single.
