Pirates of the Caribbean is a dark ride at the Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Park (Paris) theme parks. This was the last attraction which Walt Disney himself participated in designing; it opened three months after his death. It is located within the New Orleans Square portion of Disneyland, its facade evoking antebellum New Orleans, topped by a 31-star United States flag (which would indicate the 1850s). An overhead sign at the boat dock names it for the famous pirate Jean Lafitte (although his name is misspelled Laffite), who fought alongside the U.S. Army at the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. The second floor of the facade was originally designed to be a private Disney family apartment. Instead it later opened as an art-related retail/museum space called the Disney Gallery until late 2007 when it was replaced by the Disneyland Dream Suite. During the course of the indoor boat ride, guests float through an immersive, larger-than-life pirate adventure featuring gunshots, cannon blasts, burning buildings, and carousing and pillaging pirates, all accompanied by the rollicking theme song, "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" written by George Bruns and Xavier Atencio.

Mars has nitrogen, key to life: NASA

NASA's Curiosity rover has found nitrogen on the surface of Mars, a significant discovery that adds to evidence the Red Planet could once have sustained life, the space agency said. By drilling into Martian rocks, Curiosity found evidence of nitrates, compounds containing nitrogen that can be used by living organisms. The Curiosity team has already found evidence that other ingredients needed for life, such as liquid water and organic matter, once existed at the site known as Gale Crater. "Finding a biochemically accessible form of nitrogen is more support for the ancient Martian environment at Gale Crater being habitable," Jennifer Stern of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland said in a statement Tuesday. Nitrogen is essential for all known forms of life, because it's a building block of DNA and RNA. However, "there is no evidence to suggest that the fixed nitrogen molecules found by the team were created by life," NASA cautioned. "The surface of Mars is inhospitable for known forms of life." The research team suggested that instead, the nitrates are ancient and likely came from meteorite impacts, lightning and other non-biological processes. On Earth and Mars, nitrogen is found in the form of nitrogen dioxide gas -- two atoms locked together so tightly that they do not react easily with other molecules. The nitrogen atoms must be separated or "fixed" so they can participate in the chemical reactions needed for life. "On Earth, certain organisms are capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen and this process is critical for metabolic activity," NASA said. "However, smaller amounts of nitrogen are also fixed by energetic events like

BV 11-11 The Dark Side of Chocolate - Child Slavery "The Dark Side of Chocolate" directed by Miki Mistrati shows that young children are still being illegally sold to cocoa plantations in the Ivory Coast, Africa to harvest much of the cocoa crop used by Nestle, Hershey and the major chocolate producers of the world. In 2001, these large chocolate producers signed the Cocoa Protocol which promised to work for the eradication of child labor by 2008. The Church of the Brethren Annual Conference in 2008 passed a resolution against slavery in the 21st century. That action was the 10th time that the Church of the Brethren had passed anti-slavery resolutions:. Nine other resolutions were passed from 1782 - 1857, prior to the US civil war to end slavery. The 2008 resolution made a commitment to educating ourselves and others about modern day slavery. --

World’s largest asteroid impact zone found in central Australia
World’s largest asteroid impact zone found in central Australia
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:35
  • Updated: 24 Mar 2015
Every now and then, the universe rises to make clear the enormity of its size — and our relative place in it. One such moment was in February 2013, when an asteroid exploded over the Russian city of Urals, inflicting panic, broken windows and injuries upon more than 1000 people. People were stunned by what happened, but one asteroid expert named Andrew Glikson was watching from Australia, thinking it could have been much worse. If only people realised what asteroids once did to this planet. The evidence of those days, he said, is embedded beneath Australia's crust near the East Warburton Basin in the centre of the country. In those same weeks, he had found an asteroid crater at least 178 kilometres in diameter. He was amazed by its size and what it could mean. "This is a new discovery," Glikson, of the Australian National University, told Agence France-Presse at the time. "And what really was amazing was the size of the terrain that has been shocked. It's now a minimum of 200 kilometres, this makes it about the third biggest anywhere in the world." Glikson and others believe the impact was felt across the world, changing life's course and spewing a blanket of ash into the atmosphere that blanketed out the sun. "It's likely to be part of a particular cluster that was linked with a mass extinction at that time," he told the Conversation. But even then, questions lingered. Did the asteroid split before it hit the Earth? Was its impact actually wider than those 200 kilometres? Could it really have been much bigger? Now nearly two years later, he thinks he has his answer, which he has published in a fresh issue of the geology journal Tectonophysics. "They appear to be two large structures, with each of them approximately 200 kilometres" in diameter, he told the ABC. "So together, jointly they would form a 400 kilometre structure which is the biggest we know of anywhere in the world. The consequences are that it could have caused a large mass extinction event at that time, but we still don't know the age of this asteroid impact and we are still working on it." The asteroid broke apart right before impact, Glikson contended, splitting into two halves, each of which was at least six miles across. "It would have been curtains for many life species on the planet at the time," he said in a statement.

In our news wrap Tuesday, President Obama declared the Israeli-Palestinian peace process all but over, in the wake of pre-election comments by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he appeared to rule out endorsing a Palestinian state. Also, forces loyal to Yemen’s pro-American president fought to turn back advancing Shiite rebels, who seized two key towns before being forced to withdraw.

The evidence of those days, he said, is embedded beneath Australia\'s crust near the East Warburton Basin in the centre of the country. In those same weeks, he had found an asteroid crater at least 178 kilometres in diameter. He was amazed by its size and what it could mean. \

Scores killed in suicide attacks on Yemen mosques
Al Jazeera 24 Mar 2015, Up until a week ago, there was a slim margin of hope that Yemen might somehow avoid civil war, and that there was a political solution to the ongoing power struggle between President Abd-Rabbou Mansour Hadi, its democratically elected leader, and the Houthi rebels.
