Laura (Scissor Sisters song)

"Laura" is a song by American glam rock band Scissor Sisters and is the lead track on their self-titled debut album (see 2004 in music). It was released as the band's first single in October 2003 in the UK, placing at #54 in the UK Singles Chart (see 2003 in British music). It was later re-issued on June 7, 2004, charting at #12 in the same chart (see 2004 in British music).

In Australia, the song was ranked #58 on Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2004.

Laura (TV series)

Laura (also known as Laura en América, Laura sin censura, Laura de todos, and Laura en acción) is a Peruvian talk show, hosted by lawyer Laura Bozzo.

The show originated as Laura en América ("Laura in America") and first aired on America TV in February 1998. Bozzo had previously done a similar program called Intimidades ("Intimacies") in 1997. Laura is known for displaying various social problems such as domestic violence, adultery, alcoholism and drug addiction.

Laura en América was the most-watched program in Peru in the late 1990s and one of the most tuned-in talk show in several Latin American countries. The talk show stopped broadcasting in 2001, after the Alberto Fujimori controversy, which involved Bozzo. In the following years, Bozzo continued to record different programs with the same format, but were only transmitted abroad for the Telemundo International chain or cable television. Bozzo had planned to return to Peruvian television through Panamericana Television in 2007, but the project was canceled due to differences between her and her producers. She then returned for a short time at the Peruvian channel ATV, with a program of the same format called Laura en acción ("Laura in action"), which was cancelled due to several complaints.

Fisher (comics)

Fisher is a Canadian comic strip, which ran daily exclusively in The Globe and Mail from 1992 to September 2012. On 8 September 2012, the last strip was published in the Globe after the paper decided to drop the comic as part of a reorganization of the page. After its cancellation it restarted as a web only comic. In May 2013 the first book collection of Fisher strips was published by Nestlings Press in Toronto. Titled "When Tom Met Alison", it details the courtship of the two leading characters in the strip.

Fisher is drawn by Philip Street and first appeared in the Globe and Mail on 24 June 1992. The strip's central character is Tom Fisher, an advertising copywriter and follows his life and friends. Other notable main characters are Fisher's wife Alison, a former art student who currently draws her father's comic strip The Snugglebunnies, Ruth, a school teacher, and Eugene, a business consultant.

Tom and Alison married in June 2002, and Ruth and Eugene followed suit in August. It was not long after that Tom and Alison moved into a home of their own, and recently they've had a baby, Paul. After the move the comic strip changed focus from the four in the household and shifted it to Alison, Tom, and their new family.

The Correlation between Relatives on the Supposition of Mendelian Inheritance

The Correlation between Relatives on the Supposition of Mendelian Inheritance is a scientific paper by Ronald Fisher which was published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1918, (volume 52, pages 399–433). In it, Fisher puts forward a genetics conceptual model that shows that continuous variation amongst phenotypic traits could be the result of Mendelian inheritance. The paper also contains the first use of the statistical term variance.

Background

Mendelian inheritance was rediscovered in 1900. However, there were differences of opinion as to the variation that natural selection acted upon. The biometric school, led by Karl Pearson followed Charles Darwin's idea that small differences were important for evolution. The Mendelian school, led by William Bateson, however thought that Gregor Mendel's work gave an evolutionary mechanism with large differences. Joan Box, Fisher's biographer and daughter states in her 1978 book, The Life of a Scientist that Fisher, then a student, had resolved this problem in 1911.

Fisher (animal)

The fisher (Martes pennanti) is a small carnivorous mammal native to North America. It is a member of the mustelid family (commonly referred to as the weasel family) and a part of the marten genus. The fisher is closely related to but larger than the American marten (Martes americana). The fisher is a forest-dwelling creature whose range covers much of the boreal forest in Canada to the northern United States. Names derived from aboriginal languages include pekan, pequam, wejack, and woolang. It is also sometimes referred to as a fisher cat, although it is not a feline.

Males and females are similar in appearance but the males are larger. Males are 90 to 120 cm (35–47 in) in length and weigh 3.5 to 6 kilograms (8–13 lb). Females measure 75 to 95 cm (30–37 in) and weigh 2 to 2.5 kg (4–6 lb). The fur of the fisher varies seasonally, being denser and glossier in the winter. During the summer, the color becomes more mottled, as the fur goes through a moulting cycle. The fisher prefers to hunt in full forest. Though an agile climber, most of its time is spent on the forest floor, where it prefers to forage around fallen trees. An omnivore, the fisher feeds on a wide variety of small animals and occasionally on fruits and mushrooms. It shows a preference for the snowshoe hare and is one of the few predators able to prey on porcupines successfully. Despite its common name, the fisher seldom eats fish.
