A dwarf planet, as defined by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), is a celestial body in direct orbit of the Sun that is massive enough that its shape is controlled by gravitational forces rather than mechanical forces (and thus an ellipsoid in shape), but has not cleared its neighboring region of other objects. More explicitly, it is a planetary-mass object—having sufficient mass to overcome its compressive strength and achieve hydrostatic equilibrium—but not a satellite.
The term dwarf planet was adopted in 2006 as part of a three-way categorization of bodies orbiting the Sun, brought about by an increase in discoveries of trans-Neptunian objects that rivaled Pluto in size, and finally precipitated by the discovery of an even more massive object, Eris. This classification states that bodies large enough to have cleared the neighbourhood of their orbit are defined as planets, while those that are not massive enough to be rounded by their own gravity are defined as small Solar System bodies. Dwarf planets come in between. The exclusion of dwarf planets from the roster of planets by the IAU has been both praised and criticized; it was said to be the "right decision" by Mike Brown, who discovered Eris and the other new dwarf planets accepted by the IAU, but has been rejected by Alan Stern, who had coined the term dwarf planet in 1990.

First classified a planet, then an asteroid and then a "dwarf planet" with some traits of a moon—the more scientists learn about Ceres, the weirder it becomes.
And new observations of the sphere of rock and ice circling our Sun between Mars and Jupiter have added to the mystery, researchers said Monday.
Astrophysicists have been looking to a $473-million (446-million-euro) mission to test theories that Ceres is a water-rich planetary "embryo"—a relic from the birth of the Solar System some 4.5 billion years ago.
But an early batch of data from NASA's Dawn probe, unveiled at a conference of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), may have made the Ceres riddle even greater.
In orbit around Ceres since March 6 after a seven-and-a-half-year trek, Dawn peered at two bright spots on its surface deemed to be telltales of its chemical and physical ID.
But instead of explaining the spots, analysis found the two seemed to "behave distinctly differently," said Federico Tosi, who works on Dawn's Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIR).
While Spot 1 is colder than its immediate surroundings, Spot 5 is not.
One picture, as seen by the human eye, shows Ceres as a "dark and brownish" ball with both white spots clearly visible.
But in thermal images, Spot 1 becomes a dark spot on a reddish ball, indicating it was cooler than the rest of the surface,.
The "biggest surprise" was that Spot 5 simply disappeared on the thermal image.
"
For sure, we have bright spots on the surface of Ceres which, at least from a thermal perspective, seem to behave in different ways." say scientists from the Max Planck Institute.

The white spot on Ceres in a series of new photos taken on Jan. 13 by NASA's Dawn spacecraft, which is rapidly approaching the round dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. What is a Trans-Neptunian Object (TNO) Plutoid?...
Any object orbiting the sun beyond Neptune are called 'Trans-Neptunian Objects'. When it's a Dwarf Planet orbiting beyond Neptune, it's then called a 'Plutoid'. I will be making a video about this in the future.
I didn't find alot of interesting facts about Dysnomia, however here is a few links to websites with facts about Eris's moon, Dysnomia:

In this double length first episode we look at the exciting deep space missions due to reach their goals in 2015, and get in depth re: NASA's Dawn mission to the dwarf planet Ceres!
NASA's Spacecraft Dawn entered Ceres' orbit on March 6th, reaching its goal in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter after over 7 years in space! Dawn is the first to orbit a dwarf planet, and the first to orbit more than one extraterrestrial body (enabled by it's high specific impulse ion propulsion engine(s)). It will gradually move to lower orbits, equivalent to the ISS over Earth! Dawn is on the dark side of Ceres right now, but it returns to the light and its main science mission gets going in April.
We've already seen some very exciting photos from the Dawn misson on its approach to Ceres, with some mysterious bright spots appearing. In this photo-illustrated video, biochemist Dr Jon waves his arms around in an excitable manner, while he talks about the various theories as to what those bright spots might be, and covers the possibility of life on (or rather "in"*) Ceres, and what connection that might have with the Chicxulub meteor that killed the dinosaurs on Earth! (clue: "reverse panspermia")
(* ...a quick back of the envelope calculation, I reckon under Ceres gravity (about 1/36th of Earth) the pressure from the weight of ice would reach the 611Pa (0.089psi) needed to maintain the triple point of water (i.e. some liquid) at around about 9feet deep under the ice - assuming lots of things e.g. that Ceres generates sufficient internal heat to reach 0.01'C at that depth... )

And new observations of the sphere of rock and ice circling our Sun between Mars and Jupiter have added to the mystery, researchers said Monday. Astrophysicists have been looking to a $473-million (446-million-euro) mission to test theories that Ceres is a water-rich planetary "embryo"—a relic from the birth of the Solar System some 4.5 billion years ago. But an early batch of data from NASA's Dawn probe, unveiled at a conference of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), may have made the Ceres riddle even greater. In orbit around Ceres since March 6 after a seven-and-a-half-year trek, Dawn peered at two bright spots on its surface deemed to be telltales of its chemical and physical ID. But instead of explaining the spots, analysis found the two seemed to "behave distinctly differently," said Federico Tosi, who works on Dawn's Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIR). While Spot 1 is colder than its immediate surroundings, Spot 5 is not. One picture, as seen by the human eye, shows Ceres as a "dark and brownish" ball with both white spots clearly visible. But in thermal images, Spot 1 becomes a dark spot on a reddish ball, indicating it was cooler than the rest of the surface,. The "biggest surprise" was that Spot 5 simply disappeared on the thermal image. New Horizons was launched in 2006, back when Pluto was still considered the ninth planet instead of a dwarf planet, as it was designated later that year ... Images taken with New Horizons' LORRI (Long Range Reconnaissance Imager) camera were stitched together to make a movie of the dwarf planet and its largest moon, Charon, orbiting around each other (see image above)....

The US space agency probe is en route to the dwarf planet and is set to make a close flyby on 14 July ... It is travelling so fast that it will not actually be able to get into orbit around Pluto when it arrives, and will have to grab as much data as possible as it barrels past the 2,300km-wide dwarf and its moons. The rendezvous will complete the reconnaissance of the "classical nine" planets of our Solar System....
