Social workers help make a positive difference in people's lives and work with individuals, couples, families, and groups to develop the skills and resources needed to improve social functioning. They also respond to other social issues including unemployment, poverty, and abuse, offering counsel and therapy. Employed by hospitals, school boards, social service agencies, child welfare organizations, correctional facilities, and community agencies, social workers need good communication skills to deal with many different groups of people, including children, drug and alcohol abusers, and those with mental health issues.
Social workers have many responsibilities. Some of their day-to-day tasks include interviewing clients individually or in families or groups, assessing their situation and problems, determining the types of services required, providing counsel and therapy, planning assistance programs, investigating cases of child abuse or neglect, developing or advising social policy legislation, conducting social research, and providing mediation services. Strong interpersonal skills are needed in this role, as well as the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
