Eugenio Bito-Onon is mayor of a seemingly innocuous islet municipality, home to just 150 residents. South China Seas territorial disputes: China building massive island at Fiery Cross Reef

Satellite images obtained by a defense publication show that China is building an island large enough to house an airstrip in the disputed Spratly Islands. As shown by satellite images published by IHS Jane’s, China is reclaiming land at Fiery Cross Reef. The reclaimed island will be at least 3,000 metres long and between 200 and 300 metres wide. A People’s Liberation Army garrison has been built on the reef’s southwestern edge. It is not connected to the island yet, but analysts believe China will likely join it up with the island later. The island will be able to accommodate an apron and a runway. Once completed, the construction will give more leverage to China, as it is the only claimant that doesn’t have access to an airfield. China has been building islands, including at Johnson South Reef, Cuateron Reef, and Gaven Reefs, in the disputed area. But the construction at Fiery Cross Reef is by far the largest. http://www.undergroundworldnews.com The appearance of these new islands has happened suddenly and is a dramatic new move in a longstanding territorial struggle in the South China Sea. At the beginning of this year, the Chinese presence in the Spratly Islands consisted of a handful of outposts, a collection of concrete blockhouses perched atop coral atolls. Now it is building substantial new islands on five different reefs. We are the first Western journalists to have seen some of this construction with our own eyes and to have documented it on camera. On one of these new islands, perhaps Johnson South Reef, China seems to be preparing to build an air base with a concrete runway long enough for fighter jets to take off and land. Plans published on the website of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation are thought to show the proposed design. China’s island building is aimed at addressing a serious deficit. Other countries that claim large chunks of the South China Sea - Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia - all control real islands. But China came very late to this party and missed out on all the good real estate. Beijing only took control of Johnson South Reef in 1988 after a bloody battle with Vietnam that left 70 Vietnamese sailors dead. Hanoi has never forgiven Beijing. Since then China has shied away from direct military confrontation. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is like something from an exotic fantasy. The splendour of the mosque of Sultan Omar Ali Saiffudin is a captivating sight. This Islamic landmark is also a symbol of great wealth and was built in 1958 and was named after the father of the present sultan. Snow white Italian Carrara marble was used as building material, with granite from Shanghai. It commemorates the founder of modern Brunei. On a classic longboat powered by outboard motor, we travel on the Brunei River and are soon surrounded by mangrove brush. Tropical thunderstorms and monsoon rain create dense vegetation and the ensuing humidity produces lush flora. At the junction of two muddy-grey waterways of the Brunei River is an historic location, Kampung Ayer, a water village. Each building and adjoining pathway is built on posts yet there is both an electricity and drinking water supply. Plants decorate the terraces, and TV aerials are everywhere and it has a population of around thirty thousand. Brunei is a land that has almost lost its history while moving into modern times. It is a country that has grown amazingly wealthy since its gas has hissed and its oil has spluttered from deep below the ground. Liquid gold - Allah be praised!

It borders Afghanistan, Pakistan (through the disputed territory of Kashmir), India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam to the south; Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to the west; Russia and Mongolia to the north and North Korea to the east. This number of neighbouring states is equalled only by China's vast neighbour to the north, Russia. This article only covers mainland China. Especially near the coastal areas, if you run out of things to see in one city, the next one is usually just a short train ride away. Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover or someone who just wants to relax on a nice beach, China has it all from the majestic Forbidden City in Beijing, to the breathtaking scenery of Jiuzhaigou. Even if you live in China for many years, you'll find that there's always something new to discover in another part of the country. Perhaps unsurprising due to its sheer size and long history, China has the third largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, after Italy and Spain. Karst Scenery ============= The gumdrop mountains and steeply sloping forested hills with bizarre rock formations favored by traditional Chinese artists are not creative fantasy. In fact, much of southern and southwestern China is covered in strangely eroded rock formations known as Karst. Karst is type of limestone formation named after an area in Slovenia. As limestone layers erode, the denser rock or pockets of different stone resist erosion forming peaks. Caves hollow out beneath the mountains which can collapse forming sinkholes and channels leading to underground rivers. At its most unusual Karst erodes to form mazes of pinnacles, arches and passageways. The most famous example can be found in the Stone Forest (石林 Shílín) near Kunming in Yunnan. Some of the most famous tourist areas in China feature spectacular karst landscapes — Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi, and much of central and western Guizhou province. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. South Korea Travel Video Guide: South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea is a country in East Asia. South Korea occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea to the north, China across the sea to the west and Japan a short ferry ride to the southeast. Archeological finds of prehistoric toolmaking on the Korean Peninsula date back to 70,000 BC, and the first pottery is found around 8000 BC. Comb-pattern pottery culture peaked around 3500-2000 BC. Legend has it that Korea began with the founding of Gojoseon (also called Ancient Chosun) by the legendary Dangun in 2333 BC. Archeological and contemporaneous written records of Gojoseon as a kingdom date back to around 7th-4th century BC. Gojoseon was eventually defeated by the Chinese Han Dynasty and its territories were governed by four Chinese commanderies. The political chaos following the fall of the Han Dynasty in China allowed native tribes to regain control of Korea and led to the emergence of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, namely Goguryeo, Silla and Baekje. Despite repeated attempts by China, namely the Sui Dynasty and later the Tang Dynasty, to conquer the Korean Peninsula, northern-based Goguryeo managed to repel them. Eventually, Goguryeo fell to a Silla-Tang alliance, which had earlier defeated Baekje. This unified Korea under the Silla dynasty. Even though Tang later invaded, Silla forces managed to drive them out, thus maintaining Korea's independence. Unified Silla was replaced by the Goryeo (also called Koryo) dynasty, from which the modern name "Korea" derives. One highlight of the Goryeo dynasty was that in 1234 the world's first metal movable type was invented by a Korean named Choe Yun-ui (200 years before Gutenberg's printing press). Goryeo was replaced by the Joseon (also called Chosun) dynasty, after a coup by one of its generals. The Joseon dynasty ruled Korea from 1392 to 1910, being one of the longest actively ruling dynasties in world history. It was during the early part of the Joseon dynasty that Korean technological inventions such as the world's first water clock, ironclad ship, and other innovations took place. During the rule of King Sejong the Great, the world's first rain gauge was invented and the Korean alphabet known as hangul was created. China military navy force 055 Destroyer Keeps patrolling over East China Sea territorial dispute

China commissioned its latest guided missile destroyer, the Jinan 052C, the semi-official China Military Online reported. The Jinan was commissioned at a naval port in eastern China. From there, the vessel will join the East China Sea Fleet of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Part of a new generation of guided missile destroyers, the Jinan will help the PLAN to expand its ability to operate in the open ocean away from China's coasts. This could allow China to further press its territorial ambitions throughout the Pacific and the South China Sea, and to use its navy as a counterweight to US influence in the region. "The guided missile destroyer Ji'nan (hull number 152), is equipped with multiple sets of home-made new-type weapons," China Military Online reports. "It is able to attack surface warships and submarines independently or in coordination with other strength of the PLAN. The ship also possesses strong capabilities of conducting long-distance early-warning and detecting as well as regional air-defense operation." Currently, the Jinan is designed to accompany China's sole aircraft carrier, the Liaoning in order to effectively protect the 30-year-old, Soviet-built vessel, according to the Taiwan-based Want China Times. The Jinan is envisioned as being the last line of defense for the Liaoning. The carrier's deployment is a landmark for China's military, even though the vessel has been beset with technical difficulties. China has invested heavily in developing its navy as part of a larger modernization of its military. Along with the 052 model of warship, China is also developing the Type 055 Cruiser, which could function as a multipurpose warship. Although smaller than an American Zumwalt-class destroyer, the ship is estimated to be able to carry 128 vertical launch cells for cruise missile deployment. Additionally, China is on the cusp of achieving a fully capable submarine fleet. China already has one of the largest attack sub fleets in the world, with a mixture of diesel and nuclear-powered vessels. A 30-minute (37 kilometers) drive from Kuching brings us to a Malaysian village built on stilts over the river: Kampung Bako. Analysts say Beijing is now focused on developing "floating airfields" following the 'Pivot to Asia' docrine of the US and the simmering disputes in South China Sea. China may add up to three more aircraft carriers to its arsenal as a deterrent to the accumulation of forces in the Asia-Pacific under the US’ “Pivot to Asia” doctrine. The People’s Daily, China’s official newspaper is quoting Cao Weidong, a military specialist as saying that “China pursues a defensive national defence policy and four aircraft carriers are appropriate.” So far, China only has Liaoning, as its sole aircraft carrier. The Soviet-era warship, called Varyag earlier, was purchased from Ukraine, and commissioned in 2012. The Chinese have so far refrained from officially declaring the exact number of aircraft carriers that they wish to induct in their arsenal. However, during a briefing in August 2013, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Yang Yujun observed that while the Liaoning is China's first aircraft carrier, it certainly won't be the last. Mr. Cao pointed out that aircraft carriers are typically required for training, maintenance and duty. “If China has four aircraft carriers, with two in the South China Sea and two in northern China, they can better accomplish their missions,” he observed. Regarding the size of the carrier, which largely determines it aerial punch, he recommended that China should build 60000-80000 tonne ships. A typical 60,000 tonne ship can board 30-40 fighter jets, nearly half of the 70-80 planes that can board the 100,000 tonne aircraft carriers of the United States, in order to exercise “sea control”. In comparison, India’s aircraft carrier, Vikramaditya has a displacement of around 40,000 tonnes. Latecomer A relative latecomer, China established its first carrier-based air force only in May 2013. However, analysts say that Beijing now appears focused on developing these “floating airfields” with urgency following the US Pivot to Asia and the simmering disputes in the South China Sea. Nearly 3, 60,000 personnel are deployed in the Asia-Pacific theatre under the U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM), fuelling China’s anxieties. Besides, PACOM has positioned 200 ships, which include five aircraft carrier strike groups, in ocean-space, which has China and North Korea as their prime concern. As the numbers game is debated, the Global Times, affiliated to the Communist Party of China, is reporting that the construction of China's second aircraft carrier maybe imminent. The official micro blog of the Changzhou city government in east China's Jiangsu province has posted that Jiangsu Shangshang Cable Group, a local company, has won a tender to supply cabling for "China's second aircraft carrier." The daily points out that Jiangsu Shangshang Cable Group was a supplier for the Liaoning, the carrier commissioned in September 2012. The Liaoning apparently has faced problems with its propulsion system, but Canada’s Kanwa Defence review is reporting that China is now developing R0110 heavy gas turbines, for use in China’s indigenous aircraft carrier. However, there is an on-going debate in China whether the home-grown carrier should be powered by a nuclear or a gas turbine engine.

The U.S. Defense Department said Friday it would “welcome” future air patrols by Japan over the South China Sea, where China is involved in territorial disputes with some Southeast Asian countries. But the U.S. State Department did not appear to be in step with the Pentagon in encouraging Japanese involvement in such operations, which would create a potential diplomatic issue all but certain to provoke China. The two departments were commenting on a recent report that a senior U.S. naval officer favored air patrols by the Maritime Self-Defense Force over the waters. Such an operation by the MSDF “in the South China Sea makes sense in the future,” Adm. Robert Thomas, top commander of the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet, was quoted as saying in a recent interview with Reuters. The 7th fleet operates from the western Pacific to the Indian Ocean and is based in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon’s press secretary, told reporters Friday, “We would agree with Adm. Thomas that those kinds of patrols and activity is welcome and will help contribute to stability in the region.” “There’s no reason for China or any other nation to look at it any differently,” Kirby said. But State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki stopped short of endorsing the reported remark. “We’re not aware of any plans or proposals for Japan to patrol the South China Sea,” Psaki told a press briefing. “I believe they were comments made” by a Defense Department official. The United States welcomes “a more active role for Japan in ensuring stability and security in Asia” Psaki said, adding, “But we’re not aware of plans or proposals for new patrols.” She said, “It sounds like reports aren’t accurate.” China has already expressed displeasure at the admiral’s reported remarks. Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said Friday that countries outside the region should “refrain from sowing discord among other countries and creating tensions.” Ties between Japan and China have been strained due mainly to disputes over the Japan-administered Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, called Diaoyu in China and Tiaoyutai in Taiwan, which also claims them. The isles are uninhabited but believed to be located in areas rich in fishing and energy resources. The U.S. government has repeatedly asked Tokyo and Beijing to settle the issue through dialogue. Some also argue that it could erode the credibility of the NPT, a cornerstone of global nuclear disarmament efforts.India has yet to formally apply to join the NSG and would need the support of all member states in order to be successful.Diplomats have said China was among the doubtful countries. Its reservations may be influenced by its close ties to Pakistan, India's rival, which has also tested atomic bombs and is also outside the NPT, analysts say.Separately, Hua criticized both Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for statements calling for "freedom of navigation and overflight throughout the region, especially in the South China Sea"."We hope that external countries can play a constructive role on the South China Sea issue, jointly safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea and work together to maintain a fine situation in the South China Sea and not to stir up trouble," she said.
