Aug 1997 When the Boers of South Africa set off on their great Voortrek 160 years ago into the African hinterland, they wanted to set up their own Afrikaner homeland and escape British domination. Now a group of Afrikaners, many descended from the original Voortrekkers, are setting off again, this time to northern Mozambique. They fear that their farms at home are being swallowed up or given back to the newly affluent black and coloured South Africans. Many of the Afrikaners belong to the far right who have been active in the pursuit of an Afrikaner homeland. They claim that the move to Mozambique is merely to control their destiny. Mozambique's locals are not so sure the influx of Afrikaners is a good idea. Their forests are being felled and they fear losing their land. As the Mozambiquans stamp and sing at a traditional ceremony, the white South African families hold a separate church service thanking God for a good harvest. Can the two groups live in harmony and who will really benefit from this 'Second Great Trek.'? Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

At least 10 people have been killed after a Greek fighter jet crashed into other planes at a military base in Spain, officials say. Thirteen others were also injured in the tragedy which happened during a NATO training exercise. The F-16 had just taken off when it lost power and smashed into an area where aircraft also involved in the exercise were parked. Among the dead were the jet's two pilots, according to reports. The Spanish defence ministry said firefighters were working to put out a blaze at the Los Llanos base in Albacete, 160 miles south-east of Madrid. The crash sent flames and a plume of black smoke billowing into the air and the affected area has been cordoned off. Most of the victims were not thought to be Spanish. A defence ministry statement said: "The plane, part of the tactical leadership programme (TLP) of NATO was carrying out a (training) exercise when during the take-off the plane lost power." It added the jet crashed "into the parking area for planes, crashing into various planes that were parked there". The other countries taking part in the exercise were the UK, US, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the UK, Italy and Spain. According to a US Air Force Website, TLP was formed in 1978 by NATO's Central Region air forces to advance their tactical capabilities and produce tactics, techniques and procedures that improve multi-national tactical air operations. The first TLP course was located at Fuerstenfeldbruck Air Base, Germany. It has been based at the Spanish facility since June 2009. Kev Baker Show Kev Baker has been on the front lines since 2009. South African Food | Eating Cape Town | South African cuisine | Traditional South African food Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube The cuisine of South Africa is sometimes called "rainbow cuisine", as it has had a variety of multicultural sources and stages. The cuisine can be generalised as: Cookery practiced by indigenous people of Africa such as the Sotho- and Nguni-speaking people. Cookery that emerged from several waves of colonialisation and immigration introduced during the colonial period by white European people of Dutch (since 1652), German, French, Italian, Greek and British (since 1805~1820) descent and their Indo-Asian slaves or servants - this include the cuisine of the so-called Cape Malay people, which has many characteristics of Indonesia and cooking styles from neighbouring colonial cultures such as Portuguese Mozambique. Indigenous cookery =============== In the precolonial period, indigenous cuisine was characterised by the use of a very wide range of foods including fruits, nuts, bulbs, leaves and other products gathered from wild plants and by the hunting of wild game. The introduction of domestic cattle and grain crops by Bantu speakers who arrived in the southern regions from central Africa since 10,000 BC and the spread of cattle keeping to Khoisan groups enabled products and the availability of fresh meat on demand. The pre-colonial diet consisted primarily of cooked grains, especially sorghum, fermented milk (somewhat like yogurt) and roasted or stewed meat. At some point, maize replaced sorghum as the primary grain, and there is some dispute as to whether maize, a Central American crop, arrived with European settlers or spread through Africa before white settlement via Africans returning from the Americas during the era of the slave trade. People also kept sheep and goats, and communities often organised vast hunts for the abundant game; but beef was considered the absolutely most important and high status meat. The ribs of any cattle that were slaughtered in many communities were so prized that they were offered to the chief of the village In many ways, the daily food of South African families can be traced to the indigenous foods that their ancestors ate. A typical meal in a South African family household that is Bantu-speaking is a stiff, fluffy porridge of maize meal (called "pap," and very similar to American grits) with a flavorful stewed meat gravy. Traditional rural families (and many urban ones) often ferment their pap for a few days — especially if it is sorghum instead of maize — which gives it a tangy flavor. The Sotho-Tswana call this fermented pap, "ting." The vegetable is often some sort of pumpkin, varieties of which are indigenous to South Africa, although now many people eat pumpkins that originated in other countries. Rice and beans are also very popular even though they are not indigenous. Another common vegetable dish, which arrived in South Africa with its many Irish immigrants, but which has been adopted by South Africans, is shredded cabbage and white potatoes cooked with butter. For many South Africans meat is the center of any meal. The Khoisan ate roasted meat, and they also dried meat for later use. The influence of their diet is reflected in the common Southern African love of barbecue (generally called in South Africa by its Afrikaans name, a "braai") and biltong (dried preserved meat). As in the past, when men kept cattle as their prized possession in the rural areas, South Africans have a preference for beef. Today, South Africans enjoy not only beef, but mutton, goat, chicken and other meats as a centerpiece of a meal. On weekends, many South African families, like white South Africans, have a "braai," and the meal usually consists of "pap and vleis," which is maize meal and grilled meat. Eating meat even has a ritual significance in both traditional and modern South African culture. For weddings, initiations, the arrival of family members after a long trip and other special occasions, families will buy a live animal and slaughter it at home, and then prepare a large meal for the community or neighborhood. Participants often say that spilling the blood of the animal on the ground pleases deceased ancestors who invisibly gather around the carcass. On holiday weekends, entrepreneurs will set up pens of live animals along the main roads of townships—mostly sheep and goats—for families to purchase, slaughter, cook and eat. Beef being the most prized meat, for weddings, affluent families often purchase a live steer for slaughter at home. Vegetarianism is generally met with puzzlement among Black South Africans, although most meals are served with vegetables such as pumpkin, beans and cabbage.

Alex Saul, Tanzania tour guide - Alex Saul, Tanzania trip leader Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa, bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south. Do in Tanzania ============ 1 - Safari While you are in Tanzania you may organize your safari to Serengeti and other National parks at an affordable price. If there's one trip that will change your perspective on life, it's an African safari. Contact some of the tour operators for Safari Details. 2 - Cultural Tours Touring Tanzania for culture is interestingly great as it encompasses more than 150+ ethnic groups. There is plenty of traditional food, cultural practices (such as hunting with bushmen, beeskeeping, traditional medicine) that one enjoys within the boundaries. You will also get to visit a number of locations that normally people would be completely unaware of. If you happen to be a person who loves to explore the world and meet new people in order to gain knowledge about different customs, a cultural tour is definitely the best type of vacation for you.The services are not expensive and can turn out to be cheaper than expected provided you get the right information on where to stay, best tour companies and just knowledge of what you want. This way, it will save you time and costs as well. 3 - There are loads of National Parks for those wanting to watch Tanzania's wildlife. You can gain entry for around $100 US and benefit from a tour (and perhaps a night's accommodation). The better parks, though packed with tourists, are found in the north of the country. Ruaha National Park is the best in the south (locals actually say this is the best park, especially if you want to see wild animals as opposed to semi-tame ones in the northern parks). Don't just be sucked into the tourist circuit in the north; the south offers great parks and towns (base yourself out of Iringa), and you will feel less of a tourist and more of a guest if you travel this way. 4 - Scuba diving in and around Pemba and Zanzibar is another good experience. 5 - You can also visit numerous historical Slave Trade sites, which could make for an interesting, if a little depressing, excursion. 6 - Beaches: Did you know that Tanzania has some of the best, most unspoiled beaches in the world? They are stunning, with their white sand, palm trees, and cool Indian Ocean water! 7 - Kayak the beautiful coastal waters with a tour operator. 8 - Tanzania has two of the best Stone Age sites in the world: Isimila Gorge (near Iringa) and the earliest known examples of human art among the rock paintings, near Kolo, north of Dodoma -- some of which are reckoned to be around 30,000 years old. 9 - Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania's main attractions. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Many visitors come to Tanzania to summit this great mountain. The main peak is estimated to be 5895m high making it a real challenge for mountaineers.

"Three more people have died from drinking contaminated beer, bringing the number of fatalities to 72, as the number hospitalized fell by more than 150, health authorities in Mozambique said on Tuesday. About 35 victims are now hospitalized, down from 196, according Paula Bernardo, director of health, women and social welfare in the northeastern Tete province. At least seven people are still in critical condition in hospitals in the Chitima district, Bernardo told Radio Mozambique. Dozens of people fell ill in Chitima and in the neighboring Songo district after drinking traditional beer, known as Pombe, at a funeral over the weekend. The beer, brewed from millet or corn flour, is believed to have been poisoned with crocodile bile, according to district health officials." With more than half of the population illiterate and its people speaking more than 40 local languages, Mozambique faces colossal challenges in disseminating health information to its population. As the country rolls out new national health campaigns, communication experts are becoming savvier about how they reach Mozambicans. Fourteen-year-old Fernando emerges from the mobile male circumcision unit in Xinavane, casually pulling his shirt collar up to his ears, giving his approving friends a confident nod. It is a swift procedure, which could help reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV in Mozambique. But male circumcision is a hard sell. Posters dot the mobile unit where nurses carry out around 50 male circumcisions a day. They carry messages such as “I was fearful but I made the right decision," and “Get circumcised and use a condom.” Boys waiting in line say they learned about the benefits of circumcision from teachers, or their mothers took them after hearing about it from their friends and traditional community leaders. And community leaders are key in getting out health messages says Patrick Devos, a communications expert who works with non-profit groups and the Mozambican Health Ministry. “We believe that for real behavioral change, communication has to happen in a community dialogue. We found in formative research that ‘I feel clean,’ ‘I feel healthy, more attractive’ - these kind of things are appealing to younger men… It is about going out, talking to people, having all these focus group discussions. We then try to tailor our messages around things that might appeal to them," said Devos. Posters and illustrated flip-charts explaining male circumcision, HIV and malaria are devised and pre-tested in coalition with communities to create effective messaging based on language and imagery they understand. In a country where a storytelling tradition is strong, video and audio testimonies have proved to be extremely powerful in facilitating debate and triggering social change, says Devos. “These days, the reach of television has really grown dramatically but still radio is extremely powerful especially if you can translate your spots into local languages," he said. Community radio is pivotal in conveying health messages in a country where the Internet is accessed by only 5 percent of the population and more than half the population is illiterate. About 50 percent of Mozambicans have access to a television set but more than 90 percent have access to radio. A community radio station in Xai Xai, over 200 kilometers from the capital, reaches roughly 3,500 people in a 70-kilometer radius. Here they recruit volunteers as radio presenters due to limited resources. Program coordinator Teresa Zita says radio dramas with health messages and lengthy debates where people can send a text message or speak to a health expert are part of their regular programming. “We organize different types of debates. For example, next week we will be talking about the Ebola virus and we invite medical practitioners to come and talk about the issue. People call and ask how do you know for example that you have cervical cancer and other types of question. The medical practitioners, sometimes they even leave booklets with information so we can keep on informing the listeners," said Zita. Across town in Xai-Xai, women look amusedly at the teams of people suited up in beige overalls with a matching hood tasked with going door-to-door as part of an initiative led by the Center for Disease Control and the government. The initiative involves spraying insecticide on the interior walls of homes to kill and deter mosquitoes, and cut down on malaria. The strange suits give credence to the information teams, who have been chosen from the communities to disseminate information about residual spraying, while familiarizing people with what the technicians will look like when they come to spray homes. Although it is arduous and time-consuming, many health projects are finding that the door-to-door approach ensures that those beyond the reach of traditional media receive vital, life-saving information.

Anyone who has ever visited Denmark will know that bicycles are one thing the country is certainly not lacking. The sprawling Novo Nordisk sites across Denmark are no exception, where Novo Nordisk-branded bikes help employees get around between buildings throughout the day. In 2009, Novo Nordisk was approached by Danish bicycle leasing firm Baisikeli with an idea for an innovative partnership. Novo Nordisk would lease bikes for employee use over a two-and-a-half-year period, after which they would be sent to Africa. Here they would be refitted at local bike shops to fit local transportation needs and then sold. Read more: http://bit.ly/1BIr8Yv © 2015 | 3BL Media/Novo Nordisk | All Rights Reserved

The inSCALE project in Mozambique is part of a multi-country study that includes Uganda and is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project is working to increase coverage of integrated community case management (iCCM) through community health workers (CHWs) trained to adequately treat children under five years for diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria. The goal of the project is to develop scalable innovations based on research which will have a positive impact on CHW motivation, performance and retention in order to increase the quality and coverage of iCCM. This will eventually lead to an increase in the number of children receiving appropriate treatment in their communities or being referred to health facilities. Findings from a large piece of formative research, including literature reviews, stakeholder analyses and other research activities, were used to identify possible innovations. The feasibility and acceptability of these options were then analysed by key national stakeholders. Based on their recommendations, the inSCALE APE CommCare mobile phone application was developed by Malaria Consortium in partnership with the Inhambane Provincial Health Directorate, Dimagi, University College London and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The film shows community health worker Halima in Inharrime District, Mozambique using the inSCALE APE CommCare mobile phone application. Halima says of the application ‘My work has greatly improved since I started using the phone. I can communicate with my supervisor to ask questions and I have clear information on how to treat patients’.

Maputo, Mozambique Tourism - Maputo, Mozambique Vacation Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube Maputo has been the capital of Mozambique since 1898. The city was previously called Lourenço Marques until the country's independence in 1975. It is the largest city in Mozambique and the country's most important harbour. It is situated at the mouth of the Santo River in the extreme south, 90 km from the border with South Africa. In comparison with other sub-Saharan African cities, the urban area feels small and concentrated, with wide avenues and old trees. People are generally out and about in the streets, walking, driving and getting on with life. The vibe is healthy and active, with little begging and lots of street vendors and markets. There is no heavy presence of police during the day. There are few tourists to be seen and at times the atmosphere is as much South American as African. Buildings range from old colonial palaces to new high-rise constructions, but the dominant architecture consists of Stalinist-looking concrete-walled boxes, generally with badly eroded paint and rusty security bars. Fortunately, these tend to fade into the background, and there are enough buildings with old charm and lush enough gardens (cycads, coleus, flamboyant, jacaranda, bouganvillea, etc.) to give a pleasing if shabby feel. Especially outstanding buildings which shouldn't be missed are the Pancho Guedes creations: Guadiesque, surreal and difficult to find. The city provides a range of accommodation, from many-star hotels (e.g. Polana, Cardoso, Southern Sun) to comfortable backpackers' hostels (Base and Fatima's) and reasonable options in between (Mozaic Guest House). See in Maputo, Mozambique ==================== 1 - The Railway Station on Praca dos Trabalhadores is sometimes mistaken to be the work by Gustave Eiffel. However, the building is an imposing structure and well-worth a visit, especially at Friday or Saturday nights where live music often is played. 2 - The National Art Museum has a small but good collection of Mozambican art, including several large canvases by the world-renowned Malangatana. 3 - The Jardim Tunduru is a very pretty (albeit small) botanical garden. 4 - The Museum of the Revolution chronicles Mozambique's fight for indepedence from Portuguese colonialism(Closed in 2008 and by the looks of it will not re-open soon) 5 - The Mercado Central in the Baixa district has fresh fish, crabs, calamari, fruits and vegetables, and many household staples. Safe, lively and recommended, especially if cooking for yourself. 6 - Walk up Avenida Julius Nyerere. Start from the Hotel Cardoso or Natural History Museum along R Mutemba to Nyerere then left (north) to the Polana Hotel. Boutiques, restaurants, curio vendors, video stores, etc. to be seen in the relatively upscale Polana neighborhood. 7 - Casa do Ferro Avenida Samora Marcel, is a building designed by Gustave Eiffel, architect of Paris' Eiffel Tower. It is also known as the "Iron House" or "Steel House" because of its all-metal structure. Originally intended as the Governor's home, it turned out to be too hot to live in under Maputo's tropical conditions, and is now a museum. 8 - Museu de História Natural, Praca Travessia de Zambezi (close to Cardoso Hotel). Enjoyable little museum. Lots of stuffed animals, birds and reptiles with full-size models of elephants. Interesting collection of wooden carvings, including a selection of traditional and very uncomfortable looking wooden pillows. Mtn 50. Do in Maputo, Mozambique ==================== 1 - Visit some beautiful beaches, such as Catembe and Ponta d'Ouro. It is very jovial in these atmospheres and are generally safe, but beware of pickpocketing and avoid bringing valuables with you on a beach stroll. Ponta D'Ouro and Ponta Malongane have some beautiful scuba-diving spots, with either campsites or chalets right on the beach. 2 - Take in a wedding. Beautiful tribal singing and women ululating. Civil ceremonies next door to Avenida Hotel. Several weddings on Saturday morning.
Nestled between South Africa and Tanzania, on the southeastern coast of Africa lies the tropical paradise of Mozambique. The 2 500 km. long coastline with white palm lined beaches, pristine crystal clear waters, lagoons and spectacular coral reefs, is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the African continent. This magnificent coastline with its secluded unspoiled beaches is scattered with stunning resorts that blend in with the natural beauty of the region. For the adventurous this paradise, with its all year round summer climate, offers many activities, especially fishing, diving, snorkeling and sailing as well as peace and tranquility for those who just want to laze around on white tropical beaches and enjoy life. Magnificent sunrises, calm lukewarm waters of the Indian Ocean, excellent cuisine and friendly people await those who want to discover this tropical paradise called Mozambique. http://www.africaadventures.co.za/ or http://www.africaafrica.co.za/

At least 48 people have been killed and around 23,000 forced from their homes by heavy flooding in Malawi, the country's leader said on Tuesday. President Peter Mutharika has declared a third of the country a disaster zone and urgently appealed for foreign aid. Reports from neighbouring Mozambique said a group of 25 schoolchildren were swept away by floodwater on Monday. Heavy regional rain began last month and forecasters say they expect it to continue over the coming days. Mr Mutharika said his government alone did not have the money to cope. Homes and crops in Malawi were destroyed by the rising torrents while roads and railways have also been cut off. One government official said many victims died when villages were flooded in Mangoche district, an area in the south about 100km (60 miles) south of Blantyre, the commercial capital. "People have fled into schools and churches on higher ground, others are in the open because there is not enough space,'' said Grey Mkwanda, a district planning officer, speaking to the Associated Press news agency. "Then many dead bodies from several neighborhoods were brought in, which aroused our attention."Authorities are still trying to figure out what contaminated the batch of Phombe that has poisoned so many people in the village of Chitima. Samples taken from a 210-liter (56 gallon) drum of the brew have been sent to a national laboratory for tests, Radio Mozambique reported. Most of the bodies have been buried in a cemetery in Chitima after a mass led by a bishop, the radio station said.A mass funeral was carried out because the morgue of the local hospital was too small to accommodate all the bodies and the situation was being made worse by the intense heat in the region, the report said.Provincial officials have descended on the village and the national health minister was reported to be heading there with a group of doctors to bolster the medical teams already on the ground."We are receiving support from all corners," said Bernado, listing coffins and medicine among the key aid coming from authorities and non-governmental groups. Mozambique 2015: Short introduction to an incredibly talented artist and friend who despite his economic situation, young age, and distance from bigger cities has learned how to use art as a coping mechanism and a way of life. His need to have an income to buy materials for painting, combined with his desire to help others made him decide to get into Physical Therapy School. His plan is to combine both his passion for art and his compassion for others and practice both. Original Music from May Mbira Directed/Editted by: Gabriela U. noodls 2015-03-20Mozambique, officially the Republic of Mozambique (Portuguese: Moçambique or República de Moçambique, pronounced: [ʁɛˈpublikɐ di musɐ̃ˈbiki]), is a country in southeastern Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest. The capital city is Maputo, formerly known as Lourenço Marques.
Between the 1st and 5th centuries AD, Bantu-speaking peoples migrated from farther north and west. Swahili, and later also Arab, commercial ports existed along the coasts until the arrival of Europeans. The area was explored by Vasco da Gama in 1498 and colonized by Portugal in 1505. Mozambique became independent in 1975, and became the People's Republic of Mozambique shortly thereafter. It was the scene of an intense civil war lasting from 1977 to 1992.
Mozambique is endowed with rich and extensive natural resources. The country's economy is based largely on agriculture, but with industry, mainly food and beverages, chemical manufacturing, aluminium and petroleum production, is growing fast. The country's tourism sector is also growing. South Africa is Mozambique's main trading partner and source of foreign direct investment. Portugal, Spain, and Belgium are also among the country's most important partners. Since 2001 Mozambique is one of the world's top ten for annual average GDP growth. However, Mozambique still has one of the lowest GDP per capita, one of the worst human development index and one of the highest inequality in the world, as well as having the world's lowest life expectancy.
I like to spend some time in Mozambique
The sunny sky is aqua blue
And all the couples dancing cheek to cheek
It's very nice to stay a week or two
And fall in love just me and you.
There's a lot of pretty girls in Mozambique
And plenty time for good romance
And everybody likes to stop and speak
To give the special one you seek a chance
Or maybe say hello with just a glance.
Lying next to her by the ocean
Reaching out and touching her hand
Whispering your secret emotion
Magic in a magical land.
And when it's time for leaving Mozambique
To say goodbye to sand and sea
You turn around to take a final peek
And you see why it's so unique to be
Among the lovely people living free
(Winwood/Capaldi)
