ITALY BIGGEST RISK TO EURO ZONE ECONOMY - AXA Economic growth in Italy, the euro zone's third-biggest economy, has been forecast by the European Commission to be even slower over the next two years than in France. AXA Chief Economist and Head of Research Eric Chaney says Italy is now the main economic risk in the euro zone. SHOWS: LONDON, ENGLAND, UK (NOVEMBER 4, 2014) (REUTERS - ACCESS ALL) 1. AXA, CHIEF ECONOMIST AND HEAD OF RESEARCH, ERIC CHANEY, SAYING: JOURNALIST ASKING ERIC CHANEY: "Let's get your take first on the producer prices. Little bit, they did shrink, little bit better than expected. They're up on the month. What's your outlook generally for the zone?" CHANEY: "Well I think the euro area is on the verge of deflation and that prices are more likely to decline than to rise and that growth is close to a standstill. And this is the same story, it is very hard to see how growth could recover any time in the euro area for all the reasons." JOURNALIST: "I know we're waiting for some report cards from the EU, the projections. Germany expecting I think it could do a better report. Do you fear the recent raft of poor data in Germany will continue or do you think we're going to see that powerhouse creeping back in?" CHANEY: "No, I think September industry production will surprise on the upside in Germany just as August IP surprised on the downside. I really think that you need to go through the volatility of this kind of data. You need to trust the business surveys, look at the IFO survey, look at the INSEE survey and you get the real picture of the economy, and this picture is not beautiful at all. It is something like zero growth, not significantly negative, but stagnation, and I'm afraid that it is going to continue." JOURNALIST: "Who else are you particularly worried about in the euro zone?" CHANEY: "I think the main economic risk in the euro zone is Italy. Italy has been in recession for more than three years which means that debt is rising and we have just learned, we have suspicions that the banki...

Italian consumer group Federconsumatori has revealed in a study that the country’s looming financial crisis has enormously affected this year's Christmas spending. The organization warns that Italians have cut 2014 Christmas spending by over six percent compared to last year, by saving money especially on clothing, footwear, travel and even home furnishings. About 12 million consumers in Italy have opted to buy inexpensive presents for family and friends at the street markets rather than at high-priced stores. Christmas spending in Italy has dropped by as much as roughly 45 percent in comparison to years before the outbreak of the global economic crisis in 2007. Seven years ago Italians spent around 18 billion euros on food, presents, leisure activities and during the Christmas period itself. According to Federconsumatori this December they spent less than 10 billion euros. Since the beginning of the economic crisis in 2007, there has been a dramatic drop in Italian families’ household wealth. The lingering economic crisis has spread a deep sense of vulnerability among Italian households and efforts by the successive governments have failed to restore confidence in the country's economic future. Italy has a diversified industrial economy with high gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and developed infrastructure. According to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the CIA World Factbook, in 2010 Italy was the seventh-largest economy in the world and the fourth-largest in Europe in terms of nominal GDP, and the tenth-largest economy in the world and fifth-largest in Europe in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) GDP. Italy is member of the Group of Eight (G8) industrialized nations, the European Union and the OECD.
The Unification of Italy in 1861-70 broke down the feudal land system that had survived in the South since Middle Ages, especially where land had been the inalienable property of aristocrats, religious bodies, or the king. The redistribution of land did not necessarily lead to small farmers in the South winding up with land of their own or land they could work and profit from. Many remained landless, and plots grew smaller and smaller and thus more and more unproductive as land was subdivided among heirs.
Italy i/ˈɪtəli/ (Italian: Italia [iˈtaːlja]), officially the Italian Republic or the Republic of Italy (Italian: Repubblica italiana), is a unitary parliamentary republic in south-central Europe. To the north, it borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia along the Alps. To the south, it consists of the entirety of the Italian Peninsula, Sicily, Sardinia–the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea–and many other smaller islands. The independent states of San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within Italy, while Campione d'Italia is an Italian exclave in Switzerland. The territory of Italy covers some 301,338 km2 (116,347 sq mi) and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 60.6 million inhabitants, it is the fifth most populous country in Europe, and the 23rd most populous in the world.
Rome, the capital of Italy, was for centuries a political and religious centre of Western civilisation as the capital of the Roman Empire and site of the Holy See. After the decline of the Roman Empire, Italy endured numerous invasions by foreign peoples, from Germanic tribes such as the Lombards and Ostrogoths, to the Byzantines and later, the Normans, among others. Centuries later, Italy became the birthplace of Maritime republics and the Renaissance, an immensely fruitful intellectual movement that would prove to be integral in shaping the subsequent course of European thought.
