Showcase and Conference Jury Revealed

With the call for proposals currently open, once again, we have invited seven representatives of the global music community to join the WOMEX Jury, otherwise known as the famous seven Samurai, to go through all of your beautiful proposals. As always five Samurai will put together this year's showcase festival line-up and two Samurai will select the conference programme. The Jury members each bring unparalleled experience to the table along with diverse perspectives into new developments and trends in all facets of music.

The five showcase Samurai for 2015 are (in alphabetical order):

Submit Your Showcase, Conference or Film Proposal Now!

It's time! The call for showcase, conference and film proposals for WOMEX 15 has officially opened. Exceptional musical acts, speakers, mentors, networkers, DJs and music filmmakers are called upon to submit their programme ideas by Friday, 10 April 2015. Whether applicants are interested in performing as an artist or musical group; discussing key topics and trends related to the industry; or wish to present their music film to an engaged audience of music professionals, we encourage people from all sectors and all corners of the earth to take part.

Based on delegate feedback, we have developed a new method of submitting proposals for WOMEX 15, using a tailor-made proposal system created in collaboration with the independent company Brumedje, located on the Cabo Verdean islands:... More...

WOMEX 14 Re:mixes Released

After a successful first edition of WOMEX 13 remixes was released last year, the Global Club Music Network (GCMN) and WOMEX once again teamed up to develop the WOMEX 14 Re:mixes by GCMN, featuring songs from eight WOMEX 14 showcase artists that have been reworked by members of the GCMN.

Porto Musical Gets Underway in Recife, Brazil

05-02-2015: Porto Musical kicked off yesterday in Recife, Brazil! The event was ushered in last night with three showcase performances from Brazilian artists – Juliano Holanda; Félix Robatto; and DJ Dolores – at Praça do Arsenal.

Running until Saturday, 07 February, the Porto Musical programme is full to the brim with a trade fair as well as conferences, workshops, speed meetings and round-table mentoring sessions tackling everything from audio streaming to promoting Brazilian music and analysing the creative economy while artists from Brazil, the UK, Peru, Argentina and more will take to the stage as part of the showcase programme.

Watch Mario Lucio's Award Acceptance Speech

In light of recent world events, it helps to remind ourselves that our community is working for a good cause, and to remember the many musical initiatives with which all of us are trying to promote tolerance, diversity and peace. Rarely has anyone put this into words more convincingly than Mário Lúcio Sousa (Cabo Verde) did in his acceptance speech in Santiago de Compostela last year, receiving the WOMEX Award for Professional Excellence.

Rest in peace Julien Weiss

It is with deep sadness that we commemorate Julien Jâlal Eddine Weiss, who has left us earlier this year. Julien, french and swiss musician, and qânun virtuoso (oriental zyther) created Al-Kindi Ensemble in 1983. Al Kindi have been selected as a WOMEX showcase in 2013 but were not able to come due to visa regulations and the Syrian war.

WOMEX Roadshow Heads to NYC

At WOMEX, it's important to us that we know exactly what's happening in the music industry all over the world. On that note, the WOMEX Roadshow is already on the move for 2015, and the first stop is chilly New York!
