Attempting to summarize SPEAKING DIRECTLY, the first feature by the defiantly independent American auteur Jon Jost, is a bit of a feat. Like nearly all his subsequent films, it was produced on a pauper's ransom, in this case a meager $2500 loan from Jost's wealthy ex-lover. Yet, having been produced shortly after Jost's release from prison for draft resistance, the culmination of two-plus years worth of ideas on cinema and society explode off the screen as though they were conceived in a pressure cooker. Its collage of kitsch Americana, socio-political essays, home movies, and interpersonal interviews opens itself to a myriad of interpretations. Self-described as a "State of the Nation address, from the perspective of someone other than the President", it also serves as exploration into the complexities communication, an audit of one's own existence, and can even be seen as a precursor to the sort of reporting by way of personal experience popularized today in outlets like NPR's THIS AMERICAN LIFE. However you choose to read Jost's impressive and complicated debut, one thing is for certain, as critic Jonathan Rosenbaum noted, you can think of no other film quite like it.
Preceded by Owen Land's NEW IMPROVED INSTITUTIONAL QUALITY: IN THE ENVIRONMENT OF LIQUIDS AND NASALS, A PARASITIC VOWEL SOMETIMES DEVELOPS (1976, USA, 16mm, 10min), in which a routine psychological test becomes, well...anything but routine.

Jon Jost
Jon Jost (born 16 May 1943 in Chicago) is an American independent filmmaker.
Born in Chicago to a military family, he grew up in Georgia, Kansas, Japan, Italy, Germany and Virginia. He began making films in January 1963 after being expelled from college. In 1965 he was imprisoned by US authorities for 2 years 3 months for refusal to cooperate with the Selective Service system. On his release he became engaged in anti-war activities, working for the draft resistance, Chicago Mobilization, and helped found the Chicago branch of what became Newsreel, the New Left Film production and distribution group.

Attempting to summarize SPEAKING DIRECTLY, the first feature by the defiantly independent American auteur Jon Jost, is a bit of a feat. Like nearly all his subsequent films, it was produced on a pauper's ransom, in this case a meager $2500 loan from Jost's wealthy ex-lover. Yet, having been produced shortly after Jost's release from prison for draft resistance, the culmination of two-plus years worth of ideas on cinema and society explode off the screen as though they were conceived in a pressure cooker. Its collage of kitsch Americana, socio-political essays, home movies, and interpersonal interviews opens itself to a myriad of interpretations. Self-described as a "State of the Nation address, from the perspective of someone other than the President", it also serves as exploration into the complexities communication, an audit of one's own existence, and can even be seen as a precursor to the sort of reporting by way of personal experience popularized today in outlets like NPR's THIS AMERICAN LIFE. However you choose to read Jost's impressive and complicated debut, one thing is for certain, as critic Jonathan Rosenbaum noted, you can think of no other film quite like it.

Jon Jost, the Director of Strength and Conditioning at Florida State University and 2010 NSCA S&C; Coach of the Year started his road to FSU in 1987 at the University of Nebraska where he spent 7 years. He served as both a student assistant and a full-time assistant working for a well-recognized pioneer of the Strength and Conditioning profession, Boyd Epley; whom he considers a great mentor. At Nebraska, Jost earned his bachelors degree in exercise science with an emphasis in strength and conditioning in 1990, and his masters in Education Administration with an emphasis in post-secondary athletic administration in 1994.
In 1994, Coach Jost was hired as the first Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Holy Cross, where from the ground up, he developed and successfully implemented a comprehensive program, servicing all 23 athletic department teams.
In 1996, Jost accepted the opportunity to become the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for Southern Methodist University. At SMU, he was responsible for the development and the hands on administering of individualized programs for over 350 athletes and 18 teams. While at SMU he planned and designed a brand new 10,000 Square Ft. Strength and Conditioning Center.

Attempting to summarize SPEAKING DIRECTLY, the first feature by the defiantly independent American auteur Jon Jost, is a bit of a feat. Like nearly all his subsequent films, it was produced on a pauper's ransom, in this case a meager $2500 loan from Jost's wealthy ex-lover. Yet, having been produced shortly after Jost's release from prison for draft resistance, the culmination of two-plus years worth of ideas on cinema and society explode off the screen as though they were conceived in a pressure cooker. Its collage of kitsch Americana, socio-political essays, home movies, and interpersonal interviews opens itself to a myriad of interpretations. Self-described as a "State of the Nation address, from the perspective of someone other than the President", it also serves as exploration into the complexities communication, an audit of one's own existence, and can even be seen as a precursor to the sort of reporting by way of personal experience popularized today in outlets like NPR's THIS AMERICAN LIFE. However you choose to read Jost's impressive and complicated debut, one thing is for certain, as critic Jonathan Rosenbaum noted, you can think of no other film quite like it.

Attempting to summarize SPEAKING DIRECTLY, the first feature by the defiantly independent American auteur Jon Jost, is a bit of a feat. Like nearly all his subsequent films, it was produced on a pauper's ransom, in this case a meager $2500 loan from Jost's wealthy ex-lover. Yet, having been produced shortly after Jost's release from prison for draft resistance, the culmination of two-plus years worth of ideas on cinema and society explode off the screen as though they were conceived in a pressure cooker. Its collage of kitsch Americana, socio-political essays, home movies, and interpersonal interviews opens itself to a myriad of interpretations. Self-described as a "State of the Nation address, from the perspective of someone other than the President", it also serves as exploration into the complexities communication, an audit of one's own existence, and can even be seen as a precursor to the sort of reporting by way of personal experience popularized today in outlets like NPR's THIS AMERICAN LIFE. However you choose to read Jost's impressive and complicated debut, one thing is for certain, as critic Jonathan Rosenbaum noted, you can think of no other film quite like it.

Jon Jost, the Director of Strength and Conditioning at Florida State University and 2010 NSCA S&C; Coach of the Year started his road to FSU in 1987 at the University of Nebraska where he spent 7 years. He served as both a student assistant and a full-time assistant working for a well-recognized pioneer of the Strength and Conditioning profession, Boyd Epley; whom he considers a great mentor. At Nebraska, Jost earned his bachelors degree in exercise science with an emphasis in strength and conditioning in 1990, and his masters in Education Administration with an emphasis in post-secondary athletic administration in 1994.
In 1994, Coach Jost was hired as the first Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Holy Cross, where from the ground up, he developed and successfully implemented a comprehensive program, servicing all 23 athletic department teams.
In 1996, Jost accepted the opportunity to become the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for Southern Methodist University. At SMU, he was responsible for the development and the hands on administering of individualized programs for over 350 athletes and 18 teams. While at SMU he planned and designed a brand new 10,000 Square Ft. Strength and Conditioning Center.

But amongst Jon Snow’s departure for a mission beyond the Wall with a motley crew of supporting characters and Tyrion Lannister’s attempt to arrange a summit between Queen Daenerys and Queen Cersei, we saw intriguing developments in several of the series’ long-running subplots ... it went great! The dragon seemed to rather like Jon ... If Jon is indeed a Targaryen, Drogon’s friendliness toward him in this episode makes a whole lot of sense....
